Definetly worth prospecting Iron Ore for these gems, also prospected some from Tin Ore as well.

Someone else has posted this comment, that prospecting 铁矿石 is a good way to obtain 翡翠 ; I'm writing this for concrete proof that it is extremely profitable to mine and prospect, with a roughly 6 : 4 ratio. Let me explain:

THIS IS A GENERAL GUIDE TO PROSPECTING AND AHing FOR ANY ORES

You go and mine 1000 铁矿石 (for some unknown reason) and prospect it in a 6 : 4 ratio. For every 5 prospects (25 铁矿石), you save 3 prospects' worth of ore - 15 ore. When you're done, you have 400 ore in the bank. Now, this ore is essentially a safety deposit. Someone in Trade Chat begging for x amount of x ore? You got the amount, and can dictate whatever price you see fit. It's basically a good way to ensure you can always meet the demands of the buyers.

The other 600, that you prospect, equals about 150 prospects. Atleast 150 gems, sometimes more if you're lucky. Take iron, for example, since that is the point of this post. WoWhead, while a great database, has some screwy percents. This is more random error than the site itself. Under the Prospecting tab, for Iron Ore, you have 5 gems, with their percentages prospected totalling 117%.... I don't like using wrong data to do calculations, so I made my own, based off that. These only make sense to me, but here goes:
翡翠 - 36%
黄水晶 - 36%
次级月亮石 - 35%
青绿石 - 5%
红宝石 - 5%
These ^ are the values given by WoWhead. I reduced each a little, and had a final result of
翡翠 - 31%
黄水晶 - 31%
次级月亮石 - 30%
青绿石 - 4%
红宝石 - 4%
These aren't as accurate as WoWhead's, but the percent adds up to 100 for a more accurate percent composition. Now, we prospect. You just prospected 150 times.
You get 46.5 翡翠. 46.5 黄水晶, 45 次级月亮石, 6 青绿石 and 6 红宝石. This is a moderate haul. You probably won't expect to use these in JC, but they can be used to level. You should probably put them on the AH, but not all at once.
Stacks of 5-10 is how I do it, based on WoWhead's average sale price per unit * 1.15. For instance, Jade has a sell price of 7 gold and 99 silver. You can expect me to sell 5 of those for 45 gold and 94 silver. And, it normally sells.

Bottom line - if you need jade, don't buy it off the AH unless prices are low ( > 5 gold per Jade). Purchase ore instead, or farm it yourself. While farming 1000 ore, you're going to hit roughly 500-250 nodes, with an average of 350ish. You get ore 100% of the time, as well as Heavy Stone, which can be AHed, crafted, or sold. You also have a 4% chance for Jade, and other ores. A 10% chance to get any one of 4 ores, to be precise. This means, that out of 350 nodes, about 35 will have additional ore.

Every time an auction is snapped up - make a new one. This method works well for all ores, but high end ores, especially ghost iron, are the best to work with.

Ghost Iron prospecting turns such a nice profit that even buying 1000 ghost iron ore off the AH leads to a huge profit - especially when you get multiple gems.

I'm not sure as to what is causing it, but on Draenor Jade is going for upwards of 5 Gold apiece. Makes me happy. :) (Cause 2 dropped 5 minutes apart from each other. Time to go get some new armor...
