I skinned an arctic fur from a Fanggore Worg in Howling Fjord, north of Westguard Keep. This item is rare quality, which probably accounts for its low drop rate. I spent about 90 minutes skinning and only got one.

Got one from a shark near the pirate town in Howling Fjord. Got another one few mins later from a bear near the same town.

It seems this is a random drop from any skinnable mob as pointed above.

This can be skinned off of any level skinnable in Northrend, I have skinned 2 off level 68-69 Shoveltusks.

It may be tempting to save these to buy the epic crafting patterns from Dalaran but I'll say this outright: Wait till you have 440 LW'ing to even consider buying them. Arctic furs are RARE, and beyond that they're the easiest way to level LW'ing past 410 or so (the alternative is upwards of 10 thick B leathers a pop...plus other non-skinning mats like crystals) and buying those epic patterns will get you some real nice paper weights if you can't use them.

At any rate, by current AH rates on my server (50-75 gold apiece) it's actually a deal to buy two, craft the epic LW'ing leg armor kits, and then use that money to buy more arctic furs and so on.

The price given here for Arctic Fur on November 22, 2008, was 3 gold. That has to be wrong because a vendor buys it at 8g. Another source says the median AH price is 69g 23s.

I have actually found a fairly good drop rate for these things, at least for horde. As a level 75 boomkin, I can sweep a quarter of the nerubian mines surrounding warsong hold in one go. In about an hour I can net 5-10 chitin, 3-5 furs, and a ton of borean leather. Sorry alliance, this spot is horde only.

If you are ONLY after these and the other drops/skins from the mobs arent that important to you, I suggest grinding the rhinos northeast of warsong hold.

Tightly packed mobs make for easy AOE farming (hunter with a gorilla, mage, etc) and they are low lvl so you dont randomly die when you pull a few extra.

And there are so many of them that you never run out of mobs to kill unless there are more people in the area.

I skinned 12 of these from the rhinos in one evening while leveling from 70 with my hunter.

(watch out for nedar lord of rhinos tho if your low lvl)

Follow up, seems to drop better afer server reset. Also got good drops from the flying thing just outside of borneo, one of the beginning quests. Eazy with a mage they are within range and are fast respawns.

I found it great to grind the Emperor Cobras just outside of the main Gorloc camp in Sholazar basin to get those. Grinded for like 20 mins, and got 4 of 'em. on my server, those sells for 50-80g, so I made a nice 200g out of it :D
Not sure if it was just pure luck, or that those Cobras actually drops 'em more? Well anyways, you skin a snake, and you get an Arctic piece of fur from it? ...something is wrong here...

Had really good drop rates in Grizzly Hills. Just doing the beginning quests there for the deer meat and bear flanks, I got 4 Arctic Furs.

The drop rate seems to be right around 1% for all mobs in Northrend, regardless of level or location. Sort the data by Count (to get higher sample size) and it's all right around 1% until you start getting to the lower sample sizes.

Having done no serious farming for leather yet I can say that the 1% drop rate is quite right. Leveling from 70-80 and skinning compulsivly, I only looted 12 of these.

Have done some serious AOE farming on shoveltusks...surprised my data is not on there. I've killed and skinned 2000+ shoveltusks for meat and skin. 1% does sound about right, but my data seems to be missing.

Get arctic furs and money while you level!

I've been playing around on my lock for a while now, currently 73 specced 23/0/41 for Siphon Life & Shadowfury. I levelled skinning when realizing that I could AoE Shoveltusk packs in howling fjord incredibly easy, and so I embarked on my epic journey of money!
I have now gotten 11 arctic furs in 1½ hours, just by Siphon Life'ing all shoveltusks I see, shadowfury -> rain of chaos and then another rain of chaos if necessary, looted and skinned.
You get flanks that sell for 1g a piece on my AH, a heap of borean leather, junk, greens and shoveltusk meats you can vendor 20/5g, if you can't AH them. They respawn everywhere very fast, and you can just go from pack to pack.
(Herbalism with this, is great as well.)

I suggest you check your AH prices and put these up when the fur is high. On my server this item hovers from 75 to 100 gold.

On a more interesting note, I just had three of these drop back to back. The odds of tha happening again are insanely low.

Bottom of the Crystalweb spider cave in storm peaks there's 3 Purple spiders on a constant respawn timer. I got 2 of these Arctic furs in about 45mins-1hr there farming.

So far I've been very unlucky.... been grinding the cave dweller worgs in Storm peak for a while now and killed around 420 mobs... 1 fur so far :(

The worg cave is a great skinning place tho...the wolves spawn so fast you can't keep up skinning... it's non stop running back & forth.

I agree, they must have changed the drop rate. I used to get about 1 a day. Now I'm lucky if I see 1 in a week. I do the Sons of Hodir dailies and get tons of jormungar scales, and often take out a mammoth pack or two, but I haven't seen a single arctic fur since I got Friendly (and I'm nearly Revered.)

Great place to acquire Arctic Fur is in Borean Tundra, right outside Warsong Hold near 44, 47 AoE'ing the packs of rhinos. Most of the time they drop Matted Fur, which sells for 2 gold/stack to vendor. You can also sell the Rhino Meat on the AH for a bit of gold.

The best place I've found to farm these is the cave with 'Cavedweller Worgs' north of Brunnhildar Village and south of the Terrace of the Makers in Storm Peaks. I went there as a resto druid with a prot warrior friend helping. Just inside the entrance of the cave are four packs of worgs who respawn incredibly fast.

The mobs are quite easy to kill so my warrior friend was able to kill them very fast and didn't take much damage so didn't need any healing. We were there for about an hour and I got 57 Heavy Borean Leather and 4 Arctic Fur in that time plus plenty of Jormungar Scales (there are a couple of worms in there too). We got plenty of greens as well. The drop rate of Arctic Fur will be the same as anywhere else I guess, but this seems like an easy, profitable place to grind.

I swear, when I see people offering to sell one for anywhere over 100g, I want to punch them. It's ridiculous.

Anywho, yes, the droprate does seem to be very influenced by luck. it seems to come in waves. I went for two weeks without skinning a single one, then run one heroic Violet Hold and skin 2 in there in the first 6 waves. It was crazy.

The Cavedweller Worgs in Gimorak's Den no longer respawn at an above average rate. Before the 1/20/09 patch, you could pull the 8 Worgs in the first room of the cave and AoE them down, skin then, and rinse and repeat because of a quick respawn rate.

The respawn rate for each Worg pack seems to be around 2-3 minutes.

I skinned many an arctic fur in the nerubian-infested area right around Warsong Hold, Borean Tundra. These nerubians are just so numerous, and in general they were a great source of borean leather, but in an hour or so of farming I must have gotten about 3 of my 5 arctic furs. :)

ok i see every one saying what a great place they have to farm these and how awsome there drop rate was but truth in all this is. you can get a fur from any mob that you can skin in northrend so to get the furs you have to find a place you like to farm maybe get some meat to cook on the side ... but just farm leather is all you have to do. and eventually it will drop.

The 1% rate resets per mob u kill so even 100mobs killed does not guarantee u will get one so best bet is aoe farm and hope for the best buy low sell high....and listen too rzzr because hes right 6 more recipes will increase the demand for the actic furs esp if it takes two too purchase the recipe in dalaran. and another 8 just as one component....Anyone got a Idea what will be the 6? maybe something else thats a rare skinning drop? or another material from another proffesion.

I've found in my experience there are a few spots that are great for farming these, better than others.

The Area in Storm Peaks near the Engine of the Makers with all the Rhinos and Wyrms. Can farm for hours killing the rhinos and wyrms, and any wyrms killed by people doing the Frosthold daily. Lots of leather, nice gold yielding trash, and meat. Plus if ur REALLY lucky you might come across the Time-Lost Proto-Drake.

The Mammoths around the D.E.H.T.A. encampment in Borean Tundra are extremely numerous and drop a lot of gold-yielding trash, meat and more Arctic Furs than any other place for me. Plus, so many people are terrified of getting the D.E.H.T.A. debuff (kiddies, just don't go near the mean druids and they won't hurt you :-P ), no one really kills them much.

The Hardknuckle apes in Scholazar Basin have a sweet respawn time and are great to farm Arctic Fur from, especially if you're doing the Frenzyheart quest The Ape Hunter's Slave. Not to mention these guys have one of the best Chilled Meat drop rates I've ever seen. It's true, dealing with their vendor trash can be a pain, but if ur already working with the Frenzyheart, their base camp is right next to the ape's area, so vendoring your trash shouldn't be a huge issue.

the best place ive found to grind out and farm them up is scalawag point in the howling fjord go to where all the bears are i found four in 20 mins then it dropped down to bout 2 an hour but it is the easyest place to farm it in my opinon

My recent experience with my 71 DK seemingly belies these posts. Without BS, went to Dragonblight and obtained quests in Star's Rest from night elf Jodi Moonsong. Gotten "The Liquid Fire" quest mandating to kill Blighted Elk and Rabid Grizzlies. Before i finished the mobkill requirements, gotten 2 arctic furs! Followed by another quest "Kill The Cultist" headed to Azjol-Nerub. Anub'ar arachnids are a plenty, and after 20 minutes of farming 2 more arctic furs dropped! (With an added luck-no horde nuissance).

Either I'm a lucky SOB or this is the highest arctic fur drop in Northrend. That's 4 arctic fur in less than an hour to about 30 mobkills! (I'll be back to these spots soon for statement validation). Ca-chinggg!

You can purchase these from Lhara, the Darkmoon Faire Exotic Goods merchant for 12g. She runs out quick and her restock isn't always in Arctic Fur, I've found if you buy out her goods entirely (besides the gems) her restock rate is congruent with 15-20mins.

Urr..just to let y'all know. These do NOT drop from the Stoic Mammoths which appear after getting friendly with Hodir and the linked phasing. I found out the hard way (killing 600+ of 'em)

I grind these in Sholazar Basin on the grey gorillas there, they are packed with 5 or more and are neutral so they wont attack you. I always get atleast 2 in half an hour sometimes more. I also easily grind a full heavy borean stack and a few stacks of chilled meat in that 30min.

Just skin all of the time and skin what people leave behind. I was lucky enough to get 4 furs outside of Warsong Hold within my first hour in Northrend questing. Those skitterers and other nerubians dropped fur like crazy. There is no better feeling than skinning someone else's kill that they left for an Arty. I just skinned a dragonkin in a heroic that dropped it.

ok, here's the trick:

Find the LOWEST level skinable mobs in northrend - and then get farming.

With lower level mobs you can hopefully kill/loot/skin more faster, giving a higher possibility of an arctic fur drop.

yeah 1/100 means every skin has a chance, the computer rolls a dice and if its for say, a 1 then it drops, the chance of this dropping is the same as rolling a 100 in a roll, and chance doesn't remember

Dudes i know the anwser to all farming problems.the best farming place and i say this with the experiance of getting 10 Arctic Furs in a month is temple city of en'kilah at the right top of Borean Tundra this is where the fur drop.

If you only want arctic fur the two most important things you have to keep in mind are:
-how packed is the zone
-how fast can you kill the mobs

The place I've starting grinding in is around 64 11 in the Borean Tundra. There are packs of 5 mobs roaming around that area. 2 big ones(8k HP) 3 smaller ones(7k HP).

You will all say that some other places have better drop rates(false-99% of Northrend beasts have 1% chance to "drop" a fur).
The beauty of this place is that it is like the wolf cave in Storm Peaks pre nerf but only better. You are literally swarmed by the packs of Mammoths. You barely have time to loot and skin a pack before it respawns.

From 2 days of aoeing on a mage I can say Furs drop on the 90-100 mob kill mark. They drop a lot of junk and Mammoth meat and some Chilled meat.
Give it a try and see how it goes.

Is there any chance they reduced the drop rate across the board? I remember getting like 2-3 a day just from skinning mobs while leveling (which werent that many) when i first starting WotlK. Now that I am 80, I spent 2-3 hours aoe farming (which means like ~1000 kills) and I have yet to get one. Anyone have similar experience?

For Arctic Fur, I like to farm at Argent Vanguard area. Pre-quest completion.

NOTE: If you have completed the quests there, the mob's will NOT be available.

1. The mobs have a fast spawn time.
2. Argent NPCs in the area will assist in killing attackers.
3. Cocooned NPC's can open a paladin who will buff and heal you, or yield another enemy to fight.
4. Good farming spot for borean leather.
5. Good farming spot for nerubian chitin.
6. Good farming spot for Frostweave. Especially if you are a tailor.

It appears that in patch 3.2 Blizz nerfed the drop rate for Arctic Fur. I used to get one or two per hour of farming. I haven't had one drop for me in the past 12 hours of farming. I farm everything in Shalozar and the Worms, Worgs, and Mammoths in Storm Peaks.

In my opinion the best way to farm these as a rogue is outside Angmar's Hammer in dragonblight pulling about 6-8 bears and some deer's with Fan of Knives and after about 30-50kills I got 1 fur and about 25borean leather. I belive that that's the best place to farm them since you do AoE pull of 8+ mobs really easyly and fast and after doing the whole circle the mobs at the place you had started at have respawned, so to check up the goodies of this place = you have to be uber stupid die - u kill the mobs easy - imba respawns - you can gank hordes if you are ally :D.

As lower and higher level mobs have the same drop rate for Arctic Fur, its of course smarter to kill the lower level enemies. This stated, Borean Tundra has to be far the best zone for farming Furs in general, since the legendary quickspawn cave in the Storm Peaks was farmed to hell not too long ago.

I have concluded (after trying out pretty much every single spot in northrend several times)
that the best spot for farming these is the field between amber ledge and warsong hold in Borean Tundra with at least a hundred rhinos. The drop rates vary too little to go for a high drop rate. According to my experience it is much better to go for numerous kills instead. You can easily pull 20 or more of these rhinos and take them all out in no time due to their low hp. ON TOP OF THAT! their drop chance on Rhino meat is brilliant. On my server these sell for at least 20-40g per stack and they add around 20% to my income. i skinned 6 Arctic furs in around 1 hour by killing around 500-1000 mobs. There are so many of them that even if 3 level 80s are farming at the spot there will still be enough for AOEing.

Icehowl heroic 10/25 are not skinnable (never seen a dead Anub'arak so can't say :P)

Trial of the Crusader has probably doubled the amount of Artic Fur avaliable on my server

In patch 3.3 Arctic Fur can be purchased from Braeg Stoutbeard in exchange for 10 Heavy Borean Leather. This will definitely make things easier when it comes to gather materials for epic crafts :)

Braeg Stoutbeard sells Arctic Fur for 10x Heavy Borean Leather.

Which is interesting because they sell for 70g on the AH on my server.

Borean Leather is 0.62g. Making Heavy Borean Leather (to make) 3.72g and thusly 37.2g to buy borean leather, make HBL, buy and then sell an Arctic Fur, for a tidy 30g+ profit per.

Alternatively Heavy Borean Leather is 5.5g so 55g to get a fur...still a 15g profit for just running around a bit.

Gold making tip: check the price of arctic fur on your server, if you can buy 10 heavy borean leather for cheaper than that, then buy heavy borean leather and buy an arctic fur for it (I just made 1k from that in a few min)

My suggestion is this.
AFur has the same droprate for every skinable mob in northrend therefore it does not matter where you farm for this mob so long as your never waiting for mobs to respawn (cooldown between skinfests)
the Rhinos outside warsong hold are very good but.... on average they only drop leather scraps (5 scraps = one leather)
the worgs in grimlocks den however drop 1 leather per each skin at least. sometimes up to 3 leather from just one mob.
Futhermore there are Jormurs(spellcheck) nearby that are also skinable but they drop a unique Jornmur scale. which can be used in LW so can be put to use or sold via the auction house.
For these reasons i think Grims cave is the best location to farm for leather. There is little or no cooldown between skinfests as there are always plenty of worgs and worms. Furthmore spending tons of time in the stormpeaks has its advantages! Firsly its a wonderful zone and second the rare time lost proto drake. I happened to be lucky enough to aquire one during a skinning trip :)

Since Blizz lowered the material requirements for the 226 craftables in this last patch, the demand for Fur has gone way up since people can actually afford to craft those items now.

If you're a LW, for some real quick gold, check if the price of 3 times a stack of Borean Leather is less than that of one Fur. If it is, buy em all, stitch into Heavy, trade for Fur, and relist. Made 500g for 3 minutes of work.

The small difference is that everyone could roll greed on the DE-able items and sell them to the vendor. I never did on my alts, because the enchanting value was too great for the enchanters. On my enchanter, I appreciated when others did the same.

What bugs me is leveling 450 enchanting at a gazillion gold per enchanting material and having the mats drop to virtually free once I finally leveled. It took me almost two years to level enchanting. I've leveled other professions in a single day. Now every scrub out there can level enchanting in no time/cost at all. Where's the payoff for the two year commitment?

Well now they can be skinned by the 1st and last boss in TOTC (10m and 25m) and Arctic Furs sell for around 75g each thats around 300g every week for skinners if they run 10m and 25m and skin every boss, easy money for skinners like myself :)

I found a good spot if anyone cares, the odds are better since they spawn in a group of 7-8. the monkeys in Sholazar Basin near the wasp hive in the south there are 3 groups of them, and by the time you kill the third group and fly back they have respawned, or close to it. Happy FUR hunting :P

im just gonna throw this out there, but what if the Arctic Furs are a predetermined skin? just like bosses in dungeons/raids, once u enter the instance the loot is decided and set, what if its the same way for the mobs of northrend?

Another cool place I found was at the Eastern corner of The Altar of Mam'Toth, Zol'Heb side. The Gundrak Raptors give a nice portion of Borean Leather (1-3, mostly 3) and about 1.5% drop of Arctic Fur. Plus there are Enraged Mammoth (Arctic Fur 1.5% & Chunk o' Mammoth 80%) and Zul'Drak Bats which also give Borean Leather. You can also farm Frostweave Cloth from Mam'toth Diciple.

Also in the area, Frozen Herb (Herbalism) & Cobalt Deposit (Minning).

I just received three of these furs almost in a row while leveling my skinning and leatherworking in Storm Peaks, got annoyed a little :D

EDIT: 20 minutes later I stumbled upon two more.. from 1 mob. :P
EDIT2: and a while later I got another one, why do I keep getting these?
EDIT3: ok got again one of these not gonna post anymore about this getting so annoyed :P
EDIT4: ok I lied I got 2 furs off one mob again -.-' don't even need them so..

EDIT: for Bradadad, can't I post if something funny happens to me? :P

Just an update.

Many of the former places to skin lots of animals and farm these have been nerfed. therefore, any where now is all you have.

Sholazar will perhaps be your best best of getting a lot of animals with a quick respawn rate.

I haven't found any current use for these other than leveling up Leatherworking and Engineering and these sell erratically in my servers' auction houses, mostly on weekends and when engineers and LWs are looking for skill points.

But I have found that farming any of the areas suggested below generates a lot of Heavy Borean Leather, which can be used for the Pack of Endless Pockets, the Mammoth Mining Bag and the Trappers Traveling Pack.. These always sell well in the AH and probably will continue until they are replaced by something bigger.

Getting Arctic Furs in Legion era (7.x):

You will need a Skinner level 350+ and a Leatherworker 390+.

Get your Skinner to Northrend and skin like crazy in one of the higher level zones, wherever you can find skinnable animals. Arctic Fur is a very rare drop, but you won't need it to drop. You'll be collecting Borean Leather and Scraps.

When you've gathered together 6 Borean Leather, you can use a Leatherworking ability to combine them into a Heavy Borean Leather.

You can then trade 10 Heavy Borean Leather to get 1 Arctic Fur from Braeg Soutbear in Northrend Dalaran just outside the Leatherworking shop.

2 Arctic Fur <= 20 Heavy Borean Leather <= 120 Borean Leather
