As 9.2 settles into it's groove and the final pieces of the campaign and double legendaries unlock, we take stock of how this expansion has panned out and look ahead to what gold making opportunities are to come. We also check in on the price of Progenitor Essentia and the immediate market to come with double legendaries opening up.

The quantity has remained similar over time and the demand remains high for it's use in crafting legendaries and 262 gear. With double legendaries becoming available, the demand may well spike again.

The great thing about collecting Progenitor Essentia as well as dual gathering is that ALL materials are selling very well at the moment.
There was a guy on my server just farming progenitor and was getting with the advancement in cypher research up to 6 per hour last week. He was making somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-400k/hour. He had no lifed it, about 6 hours or so per day.
Pretty sure he cleared over 10 million last week. In progenitor essentia alone. I spent about maybe half that time crafting (because crafting is slow af) and humping the AH. The gold per hour was about the same, although way easier crafting wise to just sit there and afk it for the win.
But gathering was and still is extremely profitable, and at this point, way more profitable than crafting.
Of course, with prices declining, these numbers are going to continually fall but it certainly still remains viable as a gold making method as well as crafting.
Shadowlands Market Trends
has put together a really nice thread discussing how the Shadowlands expansion has evolved and what were the market trends over that time...
We’re nearing the unlocking of double legendaries — what we can probably expect to be the last major event to influence markets in a big way. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting recently on all of the trends of the expansion, from launch day to now.
It occurred to me that there could be some value in cataloging all of the major market events of the last expansion - we don’t know what is to come in 10.0 just yet, but the lessons learned over the past year and a half could come in handy.
What are some of the “big moments” you remember about goldmaking from Shadowlands?
Did you seize those moments, or do you wish you could go back and do things differently?
I’ll share one from the first week of 9.0:
The Eternal Crystal/main story bottleneck.
Right after launch, as players were rushing to 60, there was a major shortage of core crafting materials. More specifically, Eternal Crystals were very scarce, as the only crystal accessible to most players was the tortoise rare in Bastion. The last stretch of leveling enchanting required crystals, so for those who were willing to shell out for them on the AH had a monopoly on enchanting on my low pop server.
Additionally, Revendreth ore, herbs and fish were scarce, making farming there very lucrative and any items that used them more expensive than later on once most players had hit cap.
Personally, I had the gold to max out enchanting but did not capitalize. Had I spent the gold, I would have been able to sell enchants at a premium in the first few weeks of the expansion.
If we can get lots of anecdotes from Shadowlands cataloged, I’ll put them all in a doc and start building out some institutional memory for the community. Thanks everyone!
Following high-end raiding news has definitely been helpful for me when it comes to legendaries for me.
The conversation about which slots to put legendaries is a good example from 9.1 and 9.2, though I’d argue it’s a bit more complicated now.
When the theorycrafters put the optimal slots for legendaries into class and spec guides, many players follow suit. So ahead of 9.1 I made an effort to level the legendary slots that players would be most likely to want. Definitely worth it, from the perspective of a medium range goblin who can’t level every lego slot
The Korthia crystals and to a lesser extent Progenitor Essentia drop rates changes and their influence on price. When Korthia came out the crystals were selling for what would become dirt cheap as it would take weeks before players were even able to craft their shiny new legendary. I didn't capitalize because I thought the price was already pretty high and would stay stable, especially after their announcement that drop rates would he buffed. Turns out crystals jumped in price in the first few weeks, to the point where I was priced out of the legendary market for most of the patch.
Needless to say, any essence under 10k ended up in my bags come 9.2. I don't get got twice.
Personally the biggest take is that Blizzard is the one that determines the prices and not the Goblins/players. The Blizzard determines the drop rates and prices of the basic mats which in turn determines the item prices.
There are several changes in SL timeframe that shows us how this is done.
The basic mats were 5g at release and very quickly bumped to 9g by Blizzard, changing the whole crafted item prices..
Lightless silk, mostly useless in 9.0 which dropped to 3-4g and with a single recipe Blizzard increased the price to 30-40g. Now, again with 9.2 the lightless silk requirements have dropped which caused prices to drop again.
Korthia crystal drops/rewards were abysmal at 9.1 launch which caused not enough supply for the demand. Again blizzard buffed the drops/rewards which determined the item prices.
I also hate that Blizzard introduced a rare unfarmmable mats as the main requirement for a patch. Korthia crystals/POGs are the ones that cannot be farmed(RNG) like other mats (ores,herbs) and will cause wild price hikes. POG prices will raise in few months when most people are bored of the place not bothering anymore just like Korthia.
Once again the biggest lesson for me is to get into markets early. And every major market in SL that I enterered I was late and still made a killing. But people who got there before me made even more. I regret not getting into cloth leggos when I had capital to do it. Then prices of silk increased and it was awkward. Ive decided to do it now and its such a pain to catch up on everything. But I always do this, decide Im not gonna get into market and then couple of months later change my mind. I wouldve easily made a couple more mln gold if I went for cloth leg earlier.
From the recent trends I can only add that before 9.2 prices of leather were really high but since they changed how leather drops in new zone its easier to skin now + lot of people are playing thus prices dropped basically back to normal.
Also when you get flying has some influence on prices of ore/herbs since obv its easier to farm with flying.
It's certainly been interesting as a gold maker following all these trends as they came out. Personally, I was never one to get ahead on any one particular market, but have had pretty consistent sales throughout the expansion with mainly enchanting and tailoring, both current content and old.
With all these retrospectives, it's now time to look ahead and the Mage Tower Event as part of Legion Timewalking is due to swing back into action April 12th/13th.

Of course, this may get overshadowed by the
next expansion announcement on April 19th
, but there are lots of opportunities to make gold here if you prepare in advance.
Gold Making Success Stories
If you are looking for inspiration for gold making then here are a few nice snippets celebrating the successes of gold making and how it was done ...
I spent essentially ever day farming every rare in Zereth Mortis since launch, and I hit revered yesterday.
Since then, I've sold contracts and glyphs and have just surpassed 1 million gold with almost no competition.
One other player also got revered, and posted some contracts, but I camp the AH all day so the poor fella never stood a chance.
I've been in a gold making slump for a while, never really finding my market in Shadowlands, but these past 24 hours really helped revive my inner goblin. Just wanted to share :D

"My advice is to keep it for now and all you’ll make this patch for the next xpac, I had 1 mil at the start of sl (after bruto) and by investing in the legos, enchant in the first days etc I made roughly 30 mil out of it in the first 3 months !"
