It's important to know that, unless you have 12 of these keys, you won't be able to open all 12 of the Relic Coffers ( http://www.wowhead.com/?object=160836 ), and thereby attempt the boss which follows. If you defeat him, you gain access to the Secret Safe, drops listed here: http://www.wowhead.com/?object=161495

On a side note, a reasonably well-geared 70 should be able to solo the boss and his adds.

seemed I got a ton of them right at the start on the highway between Bael'gar and the Fire elemental.

Also, in the new patch, this instance gives rep for the worgen and I assume goblin factions. Don't forget to bring the tabard.

Did this yesterday. We had all keys and the Dark Keeper Key. To save time we teleported out of of the dungeon and back in, only to find out we lost all our keys in the process.

So, be careful not to port out for any reason while hunting keys.

As of 4.3, you will need 12 of the keys again to open the vaults and get the Heart of the Mountain. Blizzard has fixed the exploit allowing you to loot through the walls, making it necessary to do things the right way again.

Making this quest a hassel to convince a group in LFG to do, making this a quest to skip.
Remember still that if you leave the dungeon the Relic Coffer Keys despawns.

This is a huge pain in the ass. I recently soloed the place, killing every boss, and all the trash in the way, and only walked away with 10 keys. I had to go back and clear trash hiding in corners and completely out of the normal paths.

I like to clear whole instances, for greens which I disenchant, and cloth which I mostly sell in auction house.
By doing this, your inventory gets.. kinda full, quickly, and you often take your heartstone back to Stormwind to dump the items into bank, auction the items or send them to another character, then head back to instance again.
When taking heartstone, then fly back to instance to open the doors, the keys will vanish.
Actually the keys will vanish even if you just exit the instance for 1 second.

Patch 4.2 were the death of relic coffer keys to be kept in your inventory, as all other keys for that matter, but I really cant understand why blizzard would do this to relic coffer keys, so unnecessary.
I have talked to few gm's about this issue, and they totally agree with me, and they all thought it was a bug, but in that case, blizz SHOULD have fixed this in 4.3, which they haven't, so I guess it's intentionally.

So a little warning for you people, if you have the keys, don't exit the instance until you've opened the Relic Coffer Doors.
If you have collected more than 12 keys, like me about 8-14 more, they will be lost, sorry about that.

Also; "Watchman Doomgrip" the mob that appears AFTER you've opened all the Relic Coffer Doors DROPS a relic coffer key, what's up with that? What am I gonna do with his key now?
I already opened every damn door so he would spawn, and I cant save the key for later anyway, it makes no sense.
Same with mobs outside the instance, they also drop relic coffer keys, OUTSIDE the instance..

This is easy to overlook, but these do drop outside the instance as well! You can also find them with the same droprates on the dwarves before the blackrock depths instance portal.

These keys are now bound to Blackrock Depths, meaning if you leave BRD for any reason at all, the keys will vanish. This means you or your group will have to collect 12 keys in one run without anyone corpse running or leaving the dungeon in any way.

It's already difficult enough to collect 12 keys, but having to do that in one run makes it near impossible to ever open up all of the coffers in the coffer room because of the limited amounts of trash mobs you can kill and the low drop chance of keys.

These keys used to stay forever in your key ring without having to worry about them vanishing at all, however with the removal of Key Rings blizzard decided to change how these keys worked and now they disappear upon leaving BRD :l

As has already been mentioned, you can collect the keys from the hostile dwarfs outside the entrance and bring them into BRD, but don't logout before going in. If you logout outside BRD, the keys will be removed from your inventory! (As already mentioned, the keys also disappear when you leave the instance.) However, when I logged out inside, I still had the keys when I logged back in. I haven't tested the Chiave del Guardiano Oscuros, but they should be OK, as long as you stay inside.

Greetings all,

The Chiave del Coperchio del Reliquiario from any mob in there. But must remind everyone that if you or your group doesn't have atleast 12 Chiave del Coperchio del Reliquiario you can just forget to take on Custode Stilgiss. If he is killed the keys just stop dropping. I've wondered about this and done the entire instance to many times, and each time I've taken out Custode Stilgiss the keys just stop dropping.

I would like to add that as of 8/16/12 it does appear that the mobs outside of BRD can drop the key. However, these keys too will despawn if you log or are dc'ed.

Personally, I much rather have everything I need for a quest before I enter a dungeon if I can help it... so in about an hour I was able to farm all the keys I needed! GL! <3

If you don't get enough keys clearing the dungeon, head outside and farm Anvilmar Taskmasters and Anvilmar Enforcers outside of the dungeon until you have what you need. Leaving the dungeon will delete them, but you will keep them when you enter. So, don't fret if you are a key or two short after clearing out the entire dungeon.

These keys are a pain to get, but in a group you only need the keys between you. Remember, only the soldiers have them, and you'll need the Dark Master Key too.

After that, get out of the room sharpish; the golems and the Watchman aren't tough to beat if you focus one at a time (starting with Watchman) but you won't want to fight them in that cramped space - up to five of you, four golems, and the human. Better to draw them out.

And it is slightly cheering that every door you open has a treasure chest behind it.

The drop chance of a key appears to be tied to the number of people in the group who are in loot range when the mob is killed. Running my lvl 50 with my lvl 90 I was getting about 25-30 keys for a full clear. when I would just run my 90 to get keys i only got 12-15 per run.

Keep this in mind if you think it will be faster to leave your lowbie behind while you loot up coffer keys for the chance at the necklace .. its no faster.. slower actually ..

Tested this today, August 25, 2013. Keys may indeed be lost upon leaving the instance for any reason, however if you open the coffers, leave the instance and come back they are still open. I was upset to find out I had lost so many keys on my previous run that I decided not to complete the quest then. Today, I only looted 10 keys with a full clear. Opened all the doors I could, took the mole machine to the entrance and decided that I would step out to farm the last two keys (hoping that my doors wouldn't be closed when I went back in), cleared all the mobs close to the instance and popped back in to see if it worked. Sure enough, headed back to the Black Vault and the doors were still open. But the mobs outside of the room had respawned. So maybe the "key" would be to open as many doors as you can before you leave. Hope this helps.

This is a good strat if you want to guarantee opening all the coffers in one run:

1. Kill the dwarves just outside the instance until you get 12 keys.
2. Go inside BRD and take the mole machine to 'Into the Domicile'.
3. Clear to the coffer room.
4. Open and loot all of the coffers.
5. Kill boss (or not).
6. Run out or die and reset.
7. Go to step 1.

Repeat until you get the drop you want.

Alternatively, you could also put step 1 (getting keys in the instance instead, again don't go outside the instance with keys) after step 4 because it is possible to get some keys while killing to the coffer room. It may save you some grinding (it may not, RNG man RNG).

Note: DO NOT ever go out of the instance or log off until all coffer keys have been used. You will lose them as has been warned previously. Dying will not make the keys disappear. So if you have to take a death over running out of the instance.

For you solo'ists out there, two things that I found useful. First of all, dieing does not count as leaving the instance. Secondly, if you cannot do this all in one sitting, log out while still inside the instance. If you're not at the newly 10 instance per hour limit, when you log back in, you will still be in the instance, keys intact! Mobs will have respawned of course.

There is a vendor/repair at the start of the instance, further reducing your need to leave before the job is finished. Happy hunting.

If you farm Relic Coffer Keys in the area outside of the instance, these persist while you remain in that area, and remain with you if you re-enter the instance, but will also disappear if you leave the area. I stepped out of the instance to fly to a mailbox, had two keys drop outside of the instance while I killed Dark Iron mobs on my way out, flew to a mailbox, and the keys were gone.

After clearing the instance, if you still find yourself short of keys, you can wait inside a long while (about an hour) and many of the trash mobs will repop.

A good strategy would be to open as many coffers as you can, take the mole machine in the nearby Dormitory back to the Entrance, and go AFK for a while. Then, zip over to the Dark Iron Highway that's now completely repopulated with mobs, and loot another handful of keys.

I should note that not all the mobs will repop - obviously the bosses won't, and it seems their nearby adds don't either. But many of the groups that loiter in the hallways will eventually reappear.

So here is how this is best done:

Kill all the dark irons walking around outside the instance, but don't bother camping them. They are a low concentration to begin with, and have a long respawn -- it's best just to sweep through once, and probably net yourself 1-2 keys. DO NOT listen to the people who collect 12 keys before going inside -- they are wasting your time.
Enter the instance and hang a left, clearing out the entire highway. Typically, I finish with 4-6 keys, sometimes 7, and one time, 10.
Return to near the start, and clear out the two circles in the detention block. If you're fairly lucky, you're probably done after this. If not...
Go clear out the barracks, followed by the domicile, followed by the trash around the upper part of the ring of law. Whenever you're ready, take the mole machine to open the safes. Quite honestly, this last part is the slowest bit.
Also, keep in mind that most times, the boss inside the coffer room drops a key.
99 runs out of a 100, you are done after going halfway through just the highway and half the detention block. Total time invested: less than 10 minutes for a clear.
Rinse, repeat.
