New in 8.1 Tides of Vengeance

Followers may be upgrade to Legendary quality. Doing so unlocks an additional equipment slot for most followers and an additional ability for your Goblin / Gnome follower who already had 2 equipment slots.

Treasure Missions obtained from Island Expeditions offering large rewards of Azerite, Titan Residuum, Gold, and Island Expedition rewards.

New follower equipment: Vial of Obfuscation and Monelite Whetstone.

Each faction has its own set of followers tied to their War Campaign instead of each class having its own set of followers tied to their Class Order Hall Campaign.

The amount of followers currently available in Battle For Azeroth is 5 with no system to activate/deactivate followers. Legion had 8 followers available with up to 3 more that were added later.

All followers start at level 120 and are only upgraded from Uncommon > Rare > Epic qualities to unlock additional equipment slots and abilities.

Followers require significantly less experience to upgrade in quality.

No follower item level system.

Missions

The amount of rewards given from missions has generally been reduced.

Additional threats to missions are countered by troops instead of followers.

New mission types such as Stealth missions and Quick Strike missions.

Troops

Troops have more of an impact on missions by being required to counter most mission threats.

Troops are randomly chosen to be Ranged Troop, Melee Troop, or Mounted Troop when trained.

Equipment

Follower Equipment is primarily obtained through profession crafting.

NEW: Follower Equipment is "Bind on Use", allowing it be traded and bought/sold on the Auction House.

Some Follower Equipment offers increases to rewards from missions instead of increasing success chance.

The simplification continues from WoD, which is probably for the best. The mission table should be an adjunct to gameplay, not the raison d'etre, and I've enough alts that I'd rather not have to spend entire evenings managing it.

Wonder how many gold sinks/taps we'll see with all this.

I like that at least some gold can be made the Legion missions paid my account for the whole expansion so I hope I can at least make a decent ammount!

I hate the whole “expendable” troops system that you have to train new ones constantly. Also I hate ilvl for followers. However I love the new gear concept that synergises with professions.

How long are the times on the missions? Because if the gold missions are 8 hours and you get and an average of 275 gold per mission, with 12 alts then you'd barely be able to pay your sub on EU servers. Which I think is bs.

Although I suspect they are around 4 - 6 hours which would definitely be enough to pay for a sub.

E: That is if you get them constantly ofc, which I don't think will be the case either.

So are the equipment pieces that give bonuses to the missions other than profession mats also bind on pickup? And if so, are there really no other sources of follower equipment?

Because otherwise blacksmiths, leatherworkers, and engineers are the only ones who can affect mission outcomes with follower equipment.

Made it so only certain professions can actually give an increase to success.
So of course the items are being priced so high only people who made tons of bank in legion off the mission table can afford them.

Was it so hard to give every profession something? Some generic 5% gear that could be found? ugh.

Any clue why only 1 of the Followers gets an extra equipment slot at Epic? (and the guide is bugged for Kelsey as you said she unlocks both slots at Rare).

The Platinum Whetstone has been upgraded to 10%, not 5% btw too.

What the hell is wrong with Blizzard? You need a *hydrocore* to make 1 follower upgrade and only 2 of them are worth doing, ie 10% chance increase and 20% mission time reduction. What a horrible joke. I was only looking at the blacksmith one and it goes, on my server, for 80k+. I don't expect people to buy them but you never know. That's just beyond ridiculous imo. They should not require a hydrocore. Period.

Compared to the Legion follower system this is, frankly, quite boring. There's no options to customise how you want to play it, you can't have assists in-game which made a real QOL difference for tanks/healers, the rewards are so far all very dull.
It's all "put X in, get Y out"
There's the option to get some form of crafting materials out from follower equipment. You can tell Blizz put at least 20 seconds thought into that one. Really unimpressed.

Question - Have all followers and they are all at top level. Been doing missions consistently on a daily basis. I'm level 120 and as of today, I only have one mission left on my table to do. Why so few missions being added ?

Just checked this out, and it's been most helpful. I have 4 followers, knew there could be 5 and was panicking I'd missed something out. Now I see I will not get the 5th for a little while. A happy bunny.

I have a question that is not addressed by the FAQ.

Shadowhunter Ty'Jin and Shandris Feathermoon both have a chance to recover an expired troop with one vitality. Once I saw that I became curious what would happen if they recovered a 1 HP green-ringed Veteran. What it continue to gain experience? Would it go from grey, to green, to blue, to purple colors and continue to gain attributes?

Well on my first try I recovered an (already) veteran troop on the Alliance side- and they upgraded to a blue colored Rare quality troop. However they didn't gain any extra buffs, they simply changed color from green to blue. I risked fate with my now-Rare melee troop a second time on a mission with Shandris Feathermoon and she succeeded in again recovering them but this time they were still Blue.

However, I'm curious if a third or fourth successful mission will bump the troop to epic, and what, if anything, that will change. I'll let folks know here if I learn anything new. I'd be grateful if the FAQ could please be updated to address this at some point in future as more information becomes available about these specific interactions.

I would really like to see more professions get the increased chances gear for followers. It kinda blows for the professions many cloth wearers have. Why not let all of them craft something that has an increased chance?

As of 8.2 you are able to obtain the 5th champion after a short quest.

For Horde it is Dread-Admiral Tattersail. She has the Expert Technician spec (same an goblin Hobart Grapplehammer) and abilities:
Naval Expert - which counters Deep Sea mission with very long mission times (5 days - ouch)
Broadside - increases success against missions with mele troops by 30%

(Maybe this could be added to the guide?)

Two new troops types are in 8.3 to reflect the new allied races: Mechagnome Spidercrawlers / Vulpera Sharpshooters (ranged) for the Horde and Mechagnome Spidercrawlers / Vulpera Sharpshooters (mounted) for the Alliance.
