Unbreakable Will

Unbreakable Will will increase your chance to resist Stun, Fear, and Silence effects by 3% per rank, up to 15% added resistance with 5/5 ranks. This is a useful talent to sink all your first-tier Discipline points into, as it makes the Priest less susceptible to crowd control effects in both PvP and PvE scenarios. I recommend putting all five points in this talent, regardless of your healing build.

Wand Specialization

Wand Specialization offers a flat 5% increase in wand damage per rank, up to a 25% total damage increase with 5/5 ranks. The only time this is remotely useful is if you have downtime to hit your enemy with ranged wand attacks, which you should only really be doing if you're trying to recover mana during combat. However, even with 5/5 ranks, the difference is negligible, and spells will always be more effective. Your talent points are limited, and there are many better talents that you can spend those points on.

Silent Resolve

Silent Resolve ensures all your spells generate up to 4% less threat per rank, up to 20% at 5/5 ranks. This talent's usefulness is situational, depending on how much threat you generate during an encounter. On single-target fights, your tank should build adequate threat to keep you from pulling an enemy toward you while healing. However, it may help keep multiple enemies off you if your tank cannot acquire aggro quickly. If you have extra points to spend and need somewhere to put them, some ranks of this talent don't hurt. Keep in mind, though, that Priests do have the Fade as an emergency threat dump, and it's on a relatively short cooldown.

Improved Power Word: Fortitude

Improved Power Word: Fortitude increases the effect of your Power Word: Fortitude spell by 15% per rank, up to 30% with 2/2 ranks. At level 60, this amounts to 70 additional Stamina through the buff (54 base Stamina + 30% through this talent. This talent is a must for any Priest, regardless of build, as it ensures every party member has as much additional Stamina — and available health points — as possible.

Improved Power Word: Shield

Improved Power Word: Shield bolsters the effectiveness of your shields by 5% per rank, up to 15% with 3/3 ranks. While most of your talents will focus on enhancing your healing capability, this talent bolsters your ability to avoid having to heal at all by improving the amount your Power Word: Shield can absorb. I strongly recommend taking all three ranks of this talent, since it makes your mana-intensive shield casts more cost-effective.

Martyrdom

Whenever the Priest is hit by an attack, they lose precious casting time that could make the difference between life and death. Martyrdom combats this issue by giving you a 50% chance per rank to enter a 'Focused Casting' state after being hit by a critical strike, up to 100% with 2/2 ranks. It also increases your chance to resist being interrupted by 10% at 2/2 ranks, which makes this talent a useful choice in both PvP and PvE scenarios.

Inner Focus

Inner Focus is a single-rank talent, making your next spell completely mana-free and increasing its critical chance by 25%, if it's capable of a critical strike. Mana conservation is paramount to a healing Priest's success, and getting one free spell every 3 minutes saves mana you'd otherwise have to spend healing. More importantly, though, this allows the Priest to regenerate mana by circumventing the 'five-second rule'. Since your next cast doesn't cost any mana, that spell won't trigger the five-second rule, letting you recover some of your spent mana as well.

Meditation

Like Inner Focus, Meditation also allows Priests the chance to get around the 'five-second rule'. Normally, casters will not recover any mana for five seconds immediately after they cast a spell that costs mana. Short of not casting whatever, this talent allows 5% of your mana to regenerate while casting, up to 15% with 3/3 ranks. Not only is this useful to a Priest's longevity, but it's also the stepping stone to getting the Divine Spirit buff.

Improved Inner Fire

Improved Inner Fire increases the armor bonus effect by up to 10% per rank, or a 30% bonus with all three ranks. This talent is situational, since it only increases your physical damage mitigation. It can be useful in PvP, particularly if the Priest faces a team heavy with physical damage dealers. It is effectively useless in most PvE encounters, however, as you should rarely take any physcial damage outside of solo content. Due to a weird interaction, this talent increases the stats gained by Juju Power when cast by a priest specced into it.

Mental Agility

Mental Agility reduces the cost of your instant cast spells by 2% per rank, up to 10% with 5/5 ranks. Crucially, this impacts the mana costs of your Renew and Power Word: Shield abilities, making them much more cost-effective with this talent. It also makes abilities like Abolish Disease and Dispel Magic more mana-efficient in certain situations where you may have to use them often.

Improved Mana Burn

Improved Mana Burn makes your cast time for the spell 0.25 seconds faster per rank, up to 0.5 seconds with 2/2 ranks. As a healer, it's almost always more cost-effective to spend your mana healing any incoming damage, rather than trying to drain a caster's mana. More often than not, that caster will have too much mana to make this an effective tactic. Furthermore, making your Mana Burn faster to cast means you drain your own mana much more quickly, as the spell isn't exactly cheap. I strongly recommend spending your talent points elsewhere.

Mental Strength

Mental Strength increases your total mana pool by 2% per rank, up to 10% with 5/5 ranks. This is an excellent talent to sink your points into, especially at higher levels. However, this is a deep Discipline talent, meaning it will be out of reach if you plan on running a Holy build. It is a stepping stone to Power Infusion, though, making it necessary to take at least one rank of this talent for a Power Infusion build. If you are running a deep Discipline build, it's worth taking all five points in this talent.

Divine Spirit

This talent grants the Divine Spirit buff, which grants 40 additional Spirit at level 60. This is a must-have talent, regardless of whether you run a Holy or Discipline healing build. If you run a "Deep Holy" build (20/31/0), this will be the last talent you take in the Discipline tree. This buff helps your mana regeneration as well as every other caster in the raid, so you'll need to have this ability to maximize every caster's potential output.

Force of Will

Focused Will increases your spell damage and critical strike chance of your offensive spells by 1% per rank, up to 5% with 5/5 ranks. This is purely a DPS talent, and only viable if you're planning to run as a hybrid healer/DPS in PvP scenarios or want to deal some healer dps on encounters on which your healing isn't required. This talent will bolster your Holy Fire, Smite, and Mind Blast abilities if you want to go the extra mile helping your team kill enemy players in PvP, but that's it. Keep in mind this talent strictly applies to your 'offensive' spells, meaning it will not enhance your healing abilities whatsoever.

Power Infusion

Power Infusion is one of the most useful talents in the Discipline tree, particularly as you can cast it on yourself or one of your allies. It is a single-rank talent, and it has a relatively long 15-second duration, given its 3-minute cooldown. It takes an extra 10 talent points to unlock this spell compared a deep holy build, but the potential DPS increase is definitely worth it if you feel like you can do without Spiritual Guidance and Spiritual Healing

Holy Tree Talents

Healing Focus

Healing Focus gives you a 35% chance to avoid interruption by damage, up to 70% with 2/2 ranks. Note, this does not increase your resistance to interrupt spells like a Mage's Counterspell, but rather your resistance to the 'pushback' effect that increases your cast time when you suffer direct damage. This talent is critical if you plan on PvP healing, particularly if you pair it with Martyrdom. Even in PvE, healing priests should always spend 2 points on this talent, as there is nothing else you can put those points into that provides anywhere as much value.

Improved Renew

The Improved Renew talent does exactly what its name implies: It increases your Renew spell's effectiveness by 5% per rank, up to 15% with 3/3 ranks. However, this only applies to the base healing done by the spell, so this is an incredibly underwhelming talent and only increases your max rank Renew raw HPS by 8-10 at 3/3 points. I'd always fully skip this talent, unless you're running some niche renew build.

Holy Specialization

Holy Specialization improves the critical effect chance of your Holy spells by 1% per rank, up to 5% with 5/5 ranks. Getting all five ranks here is a good idea, as this will improve nearly every healing spell a Priest can use, from direct spells like Heal to AoE Prayer of Healing casts. The best use of this talent is to increase Inspiration uptime, as it will be a lot lower this time around with no world buffs.

Spell Warding

Spell Warding reduces all spell damage you take by 2% per rank, up to 10% with 5/5 ranks. This talent is really only useful in PvP situations, as the Priest shouldn't be targeted at all by spell casters in PvE scenarios. There are some PvE encounters, like Sapphiron, for example, on which there's raid-wide damage that could be reduced by taking this talent, but so far, sticking to regular builds has proven to be more successful on those types of bosses.

Divine Fury

Divine Fury reduces the cast time of your Smite, Holy Fire, Heal and Greater Heal spells by 0.1 seconds per rank, up to 0.5 seconds with 5/5 ranks. Taking all five ranks here is not negotiable, as cutting your healing casts by half a second is always beneficial. Heal and Greater Heal will often be your primary spells as a Holy Priest, and 0.5 seconds could mean the difference between life and death for your healing target, especially if it's a tank.

Holy Nova

Holy Nova is a useful, if situational, spell to have in the Priest healing kit. It offers two great benefits as an instant cast AoE heal that generates no threat and even does a little bit of damage. However, it also has two huge drawbacks: It's an expensive spell for the amount of healing it does, and it only affects allies and enemies within 10 yards. This is only a good spell for spot healing where mana efficiency doesn't matter, or you can't afford to stand still to cast a more effective AoE heal like Prayer of Healing. As you can pick it up in exchange for just 1% crit, you can include this talent in just about every healing build without missing out on much.

Blessed Recovery

Blessed Recovery is a passive healing effect that heals the Priest for 8% of a critical melee or ranged attack's damage over 6 seconds, up to 25% with 3/3 ranks. This talent is entirely situational, as it requires the priest to be critically struck, which doesn't happen often, even in PvP. Even worse, its effect is mitigated by healing reduction effects, like an Arms Warrior's Mortal Strike. I recommend avoiding this talent unless you need to sink a point somewhere to move on to the next Holy tier.

Inspiration

Inspiration increases your healing target's armor by 25% for 15 seconds after scoring a critical effect with any of your direct healing spells, including Flash Heal, Heal, Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing. This talent is worth sinking all three points into, particularly if you're tank healing, but even as a raid healer, there's hardly ever a situation in which you'd choose to spend those three talent points in anything other than inspiration.

Holy Reach

Holy Reach improves the range of your Smite and Holy Fire spells, as well as the radius of your Holy Nova and Prayer of Healing by 10% per rank, up to 20% with 2/2 ranks. As a healer, it is nice to have a bit of extra wiggle room if you're AoE healing. This talent is especially great in the later phases if you are an alliance priest, as Prayer of Healing will be used very often.

Improved Healing

Improved Healing does not, as its name implies, enhance your healing spells' effectiveness. Instead, it does lower the mana cost of your Lesser Heal, Heal, and Greater Heal spells 5% per rank, up to 15% with 3/3 ranks. Heal should be your primary direct spell, so reducing its mana cost by 15% will dramatically improve your longevity over any PvE scenario. I would not recommend taking this in PvP builds, however, since you likely won't live long enough to see its full usefulness.

Searing Light

Searing Light is a single-rank talent that improves the damage of your Smite and Holy Fire by 5% per point. As part of a healing build, it's not worth taking this talent unless you want to do some smiting when your healing isn't needed.

Improved Prayer of Healing

Improved Prayer of Healing simply reduces the mana cost of your Prayer of Healing by 10% per rank, up to 20% with 2/2 ranks. This talent is situationally useful in fights that demand a lot of AoE healing. Prayer of Healing is an expensive spell, so reducing its mana cost will help dramatically in those specific scenarios. Dropping points in Spiritual Guidance is the best way to pick up this talent in a deep holy build.

Spirit of Redemption

Spirit of Redemption is a unique talent, as it allows the Priest to keep healing for 10 seconds after suffering a fatal blow. There are a few conditions, of course — the Priest can't move, but they also can't be attacked or targeted whatsoever, and all healing spells also cost no mana. Making use of this talent depends entirely on dying; however, that is what being a healer is supposed to prevent in the first place. This may occasionally prevent a raid wipe long enough to beat an encounter, but that's about it. If you're looking to become a better healer, this isn't a talent you want to rely on, either.

Spiritual Guidance

Spiritual Guidance improves the effectiveness of your healing and damage spells by 5% of your total Spirit per rank, up to 25% of your total Spirit with 5/5 ranks. Spirit is a crucial stat for PvE healing Priests, as it improves mana regeneration (which may, in turn, be improved while you're casting by taking Meditation). This lets the Priest gain even more benefit out of gaining Spirit by allowing it to increase their effective healing alongside increasing it through a higher Intellect stat.

Spiritual Healing

Spiritual Healing increases the effective amount of your healing spells by 2% per rank, up to 10% with 5/5 ranks. If you're going for a Deep Holy build, this talent is an absolute no-brainer. This talent only affects the base healing of your spells until TBC but is still very good.

Lightwell

Lightwell is a useless talent for Holy Priests. It's unfortunate, because Lightwell is, on its surface, a well-designed spell. The idea is more or less to have 5 Renew charges in reserve. Any group member can click on the Lightwell and get a HoT effect that's stronger than Renew, and the Priest can save quite a bit of mana by casting this ahead of time. However, its four major drawbacks are that it's fixed in place, doesn't scale with healing power, the HoT disappears on taking damage, and it requires people to actually click on it. That may not always be easy, depending on the encounter. In most cases, it's not worth taking this talent unless your group tries to use the Lightwell.

Shadow: The talents that you'll find in the Shadow tree are very complementary to one another; by the time you get 31 points in Shadow, you will have a lot of synergy between talents that increase your damage, and as a result, your overall leveling efficiency will increase.

Wand Specialization: As Shoot is going to be one of your most consistent sources of damage, many players choose to spec 5 points into Wand Specialization before moving into the Shadow tree, at level 40 you should respec to get Shadowform.

Comment by Robotusch

Arguably the biggest drawback for Lightwell is that it's not even a HoT, it's channeled. It was worthless in Vanilla and it's worthless in Classic.

Comment by Pathetique

Healing talents in vanilla do not increase with +healing items. It's extremely important to make people aware that when selecting these talents like imp renew or spiritual healing that they will only be increasing the paper number for these spells. Specifically, it makes the decision between imp renew and healing focus much more contentious.

Comment by Mokyx

For the talent of the PVE Holy Priest, won't it be better at high level to take Mental Strength than Spiritual Healing ?
Is Mental Strength applied to the Flask of Distilled Wisdom effect ?

Comment by rectuss

what about shadow priest pve/pvp?

Comment by Laterose

On the Meditation Disc talent: "Not only is this useful to a Priest's longevity, but it's also the stepping point to getting the Divine Spirit buff. That makes putting at least one point in Meditation a must."

Divine Spirit actually requires all three points in Meditation as a prerequisite.

Thank you for the wonderfully helpful guide otherwise.

Comment by Utharion

What about 2/2 in stamina buff ? Not mandatory in dungeon, and at least one priest in the raid... ?

Why taking holy nova ? It doesn't very usefull to me ?

Comment by skribs

Divine Spirit is important to the raid, yes. But if another priest has it, it becomes less mandatory.

If you're not going for Divine Spirit because another healer has it, you can go for something like this instead:
https://classic.wowhead.com/talent-calc/priest/50023013-235051032302155

This is also the type of build I would use for healing 5-mans, due to how much more use you can get out of ProH.

Comment by Bemoosed

@Maugus: Fix error in PvP Deep Discipline (33/18/0):
The spell mentioned Increased Stamina 27 (spell=14474) should be Martyrdom (spell=14774).

Comment by jo2k

Please correct the talent count for the description of the Divine Spirit talent.

The "Deep Holy" build cannot be 20/31/0 with Divine Spirit. Divine Spirit requires 20 previous talents to be taken, so it would be the 21st talent in Discipline.

I think you meant to say 21/30/0, where the 21st Discipline talent would be Divine Spirit.
