Improved Eviscerate

Improved Eviscerate will increase the damage output of Eviscerate by a small amount. In PvE, this is almost always a wasted talent, because you won't be using Eviscerate that often, instead opting for Slice and Dice. In PvP however, this is a much more useful talent, because of the relatively high damage Eviscerate does when it critically strikes!

Remorseless Attacks

Remorseless Attacks is really only useful in World PvP situations, when a Rogue is fighting multiple targets. The Rogue can Blind one target, kill the other, and activate Remorseless Attacks effect, triggering a nearly guaranteed critical strike on the next Ambush or Backstab!

Malice

Malice is an extremely powerful talent in both PvE and PvP scenarios. A flat 5% Critical Strike chance increase is always welcome for increasing your overall damage output. Most Builds will opt for 5 points in Malice, unless it is an uncommon or unique Build, attempting to do Mace Specialization with Preparation, as a fun PvP Build.

Ruthlessness

Ruthlessness is incredible in both PvE and PvP. This effect can trigger regardless of the number of Combo Points on your target. As long as you activate a Finisher, you'll be able to receive a free Combo Point on the target, 60% of the time. With how many Finishers a Rogue will use during a PvE Boss Encounter, or even while fighting Enemy Players, Ruthlessness will trigger often enough to be well worth the three Talent Points!

Murder

Murder does apply to Enemy Players in PvP Combat, as well as many Bosses in PvE content. A Flat 2% Damage increase is always welcome, especially over Improved Eviscerate. I would recommend this for most builds, that is unless you are struggling against a specific Boss in PvE content that this talent doesn't apply to.

Improved Slice and Dice

Improved Slice and Dice is the premier PvE talent. Every Build in PvE should invest a full three Talent Points here, just because of how important Slice and Dice is for your rotation. In PvP, you won't be using Slice and Dice often enough to warrant these points, but again, some unique Builds might try to prioritize it.

Relentless Strikes

Relentless Strikes is one of the best single Talent Points you can spend for both PvP and PvE. At a full five Combo Points, this is a guaranteed 25 Energy, for free. Effectively making Slice and Dice cost nothing. In fact, all of a Rogue's Finishers cost 25 Energy, other than Eviscerate, which costs 35. I can't stress this enough how important Relentless Strikes is.

Improved Expose Armor

Improved Expose Armor is a utility talent for raids with high physical DPS. A 5 point Expose Armor with 2/2 Improved Expose Armor offers more armor reduction than 5 stacks of Sunder Armor, increasing the physical damage of everyone in the raid. This prevents a Warrior tank from using Sunder Armor, so your tanks will need to know if you are planning to use Expose Armor and plan accordingly.

Lethality

Lethality is a powerful Talent, increasing the Damage Bonus of a Rogue's Critical Strikes with Combo Point Generators from 200% Damage to 230% Damage. This increase doesn't seem like much, but if your Build focuses on Crit Chance, as a Seal Fate Daggers Build would, this can be very valuable. This benefit, of course, also applies in PvP, where a single Critical Strike can change the course of a battle!

Vile Poisons

Vile Poisons is extremely weak in Classic. Unfortunately, Vile Poisons is heavily outshined by Improved Poisons, because increasing the chance your Poison is applied is much more valuable than the Damage being dealt by the Poison. However, the Dispel resistance is extremely valuable in PvP, as a Rogue's primary job in Warsong Gulch is to prevent the enemy Flag Carrier from getting away. If a Rogue can force the Druid to spam more Abolish Poison, it can give the Rogue just a tad more time to stop them!

Improved Poisons

Improved Poisons is especially valuable for Alliance Rogues. Because Alliance Rogues will not have access to Windfury Totem, they will apply Instant Poison VI to both their Main Hand and Off Hand weapons. With an increase chance to apply Poisons, this can be a massive Damage boost for Alliance Rogues! This also stacks directly with Bloodfang Armor's 3-set Bonus, offering an extra 5%, bringing your bonus Poison application chance to 15%!

Cold Blood

Cold Blood is an incredible strong Talent in PvP situations. A Critical Strike from Eviscerate can actually almost one shot a poorly geared Level 60 Enemy Player, making this a valuable skill to have in PvP. Unfortunately in the later Phases of Classic, this value will wear out, as most of the player base will have access to decent gear at Level 60.

Improved Kidney Shot

Improved Kidney Shot can actually be useful in Warsong Gulch, when the Rogue uses Kidney Shot on the enemy Flag carrier, increasing their own damage, as well as their entire team's damage on the Target. Most Rogues aren't specializing their Talents for a Warsong Gulch Build, so you don't see it taken that often.

Seal Fate

Seal Fate enables the Daggers focused Build, creating an entirely different playstyle for the Rogue, centering more around Critical Strike chance. With a Critical Strike from Ambush or Backstab, the Rogue will gain 2 Combo Points, instead of 1. With this Build, the Rogue will be able to Eviscerate more often than the Swords focused Build, as well as using Vanish for both clearing Threat and enabling more Ambush!

Vigor

Vigor is absolutely worthless. 10 Extra Energy doesn't do much for a Rogue, because during the course of a fight, the Rogue's Energy will be bouncing between 0 and 60 Energy, which means Vigor is effectively only giving value during the Opener. And the Opener really only matters in PvP content, where Preparation is extremely vital to a Rogue's success. Unfortunately, you can't have both Vigor and Preparation in the same Build.

Combat Tree Talents

Improved Gouge

Improved Gouge is a must have Talent. In every day like for the Rogue, you should be using Gouge relatively often. For a free Stealth against Enemy Players, time to use a Heavy Runecloth Bandage, or even to just Control a second Target while killing something else. You can also use Gouge on a creature to give you time to Mine a Vein or Gather an Herb. There is no reason to take extra points in Lightning Reflexes over Improved Gouge, ever.

Improved Sinister Strike

Improved Sinister Strike is a must have Talent if you are Raiding as Combat Swords. Reducing Sinister Strike by 5 Energy will have massive value over the course of a Raid Fight, making you much more Energy efficient and increasing your total damage output by a significant margin. In general, I even recommend Improved Sinister Strike for Backstab based builds, for those rare occasions where you can't get behind the Target.

Lightning Reflexes

Lightning Reflexes is pretty awful, for both PvE and PvP. As a general rule of thumb, if a Rogue is being attacked, at all, it isn't going to go over very well, unless of course the Rogue can Vanish and get away. Extra Passive Dodge Chance won't actually make much of a difference, unless of course the Rogue is stacking full Dodge Gear and using Ghostly Strike on every cooldown, but that is mostly a fun build.

Improved Backstab

Improved Backstab is a massive Damage boost for Dagger based Rogues. An Extra 30% Chance to Critically Strike, added on top of your base Crit Chance is ridiculous. At Level 60, with decent gear, a Rogue will have over a 50% Chance to Crit with every Backstab! If a Rogue is wielding Daggers and focusing on either PvE or PvP, this is a must have Talent.

Deflection

Deflection is mostly used in Leveling Builds for Rogues, focusing on Combat Swords. In PvE Raiding encounters, Deflection will have no impact on combat, whatsoever. In PvP, the extra Parry chance won't do much either, because the Rogue will likely be attacking enemy Targets while they are Stunned or attacking from behind.

Precision

Precision is a must have Talent for PvE Rogues. A Base 5% Hit Chance means a Rogue only needs to get 4% Hit Chance from Gear, making it much easier to choose between two pieces of gear while Upgrading. Even in PvP Precision can play a role, because PvP Rogues still need at least 5% Hit Rating to always land Activated Attacks.

Endurance

Endurance is a useful utility talent for rogues in PvE and PvP, allowing more frequent use of Sprint and Evasion. Evasion is especially nice to give yourself extra safety incase you pull threat while Blade Flurrying multiple enemies in PvE.

Riposte

Riposte requires 5 Points invested in Deflection, so it is fairly uncommon for a Level 60 Rogue to pick this Talent up. Again, like Deflection, this is mostly used in Leveling Builds.

Improved Sprint

Improved Sprint is one of the most powerful Talents a Rogue can choose for PvP. Improved Sprint will break any Slow or Root effect, such as Frost Nova, Entangling Roots, Hamstring, Crippling Poison II, or even Curse of Exhaustion. It's important for Rogues to understand that Improved Sprint only removes all Slow and Root effects, it doesn't make the Rogue immune. So, if you apply this too quickly and another Slow is applied right after, it will effectively do nothing.

Improved Kick

Improved Kick is also only used in PvP. This is a great tool to apply blanket silences to an Enemy Target. Because Kick will only interrupt the Target's School for 6 seconds in the event of a successful interrupt, Improved Silence allows you to apply a 2 second, full silence to the target, even locking out instant casts such as Nature's Swiftness or even Fel Domination!

Dagger Specialization

Dagger Specialization isn't taken very often. In most situations, if you are going to Raid as Daggers, you would instead do Seal Fate Daggers, which focuses on Assassination and doesn't go very far in the Combat Tree. In some cases, you will see Combat Dagger Rogues running around, in those situations, it most likely means that Rogue couldn't find any good Swords, but ran into some powerful Daggers.

Dual Wield Specialization

Dual Wield Specialization is a powerful Talent that boosts your White Auto-Attack damage of your Off Hand. It's strictly a flat damage boost, and always recommended for Raiding PvE Rogues.

Mace Specialization

Mace Specialization is kind of a fun and unique Talent to take for PvP Rogues. It doesn't become viable until very late in the Classic Phases, after Naxxramas is released in Phase 6, and a Rogue has access to Misplaced Servo Arm. Once that happens, Mace Rogues can be quite formidable in PvP!

Blade Flurry

Blade Flurry is easily the strongest single talent a rogue has for dealing increased damage in PvE raiding. Hitting two targets with Blade Flurry on top of the haste it provides more than doubles your damage output while this is active. Pair this with some nice cooldowns like Adrenaline Rush or Thistle Tea to get twice as much damage out of those abilities as well!

Sword Specialization

Sword Specialization is a very strong talent for a PvE Raiding Rogue, and is a key element of rogue's ability to scale up with increased gear levels. Even a Level 45 Quest Reward, Thrash Blade is decent enough to go into a Raid with if you are Combat Swords, during Phase 1. Of course, you will need to upgrade your Sword before you can get much further!

Fist Weapon Specialization

Fist Weapon Specialization is another one of those joke Talents. It's actually quite fun to play once you acquire the Primal Blessing set from Zul'Gurub during Phase 4. With this set, a Rogue can run around with Primal Blessing, clawing down any Enemy Targets. It is unfortunately not very good in PvE or PvP, but at least you look cool!

Weapon Expertise

Weapon Expertise is another must have Raiding Talent. As Mentioned in previous Guides, Weapon Skill is one of the most important things a Rogue can obtain, just after hitting the Soft Hit Cap. This unfortunately doesn't apply to Maces, for some odd reason, but nonetheless, this Talent is a massive damage boost in Raids!

Aggression

Aggression is an amazing Talent, being one of the few Talents that applies a Damage boost to Sinister Strike. While the boost to Eviscerate won't do much for a Rogue, unless they are buffed by Adrenaline Rush of course, the damage to Sinister Strike can make a noticeable impact over the course of an entire Boss Fight.

Adrenaline Rush

Adrenaline Rush is a strong damage dealing cooldown talent, and especially in short single-target encounters not much comes close to the bonus damage granted by 150 extra energy.

Subtlety Tree Talents

Master of Deception

Master of Deception is really only taken for PvP Hemorrhage based Rogues, because if a Rogue is using Backstab, they would always rather take Opportunity. In some cases, it can be advantageous to have this Talent if a Rogue happens to be in pre-made Battlegrounds, losing Stealth battles versus other Rogues. But when that happens, the Rogue should focus on getting Whisperwalk Boots and Catseye Ultra Goggles!

Opportunity

Opportunity is a must have Talent for Backstab Rogues. A 20% Damage boost is incredible, applying a huge buff to damage output not only for Backstab, but also Ambush! This boost is also amplified by Critical Strikes, which both of these abilities have a high Crit Chance, if you spec into Improved Backstab and Improved Ambush!

Sleight of Hand

Sleight of Hand is probably the worst Talent in all three Specialization Trees. Do not, under any circumstances, ever take this Talent. A Rogue already has access to Vanish, which wipes Threat completely! There is no reason to take this Talent or even use Feint to reduce Threat!

Elusiveness

Elusiveness is great for PvP, allowing a Rogue to use Vanish and Blind every 3.5 Minutes. While that doesn't seem like a big deal, a Rogue is able to stay in Stealth, waiting for Cooldowns to come up before attacking an Enemy Target.

Camouflage

Camouflage is also a great Talent for PvP, allowing a Rogue to Reduce Stealth's Cooldown to 5 or even 6 seconds. This pairs insanely well with Improved Gouge, after a Rogue is knocked out of Stealth, the Rogue can Gouge the Target, Bandage, and then Re-Stealth for another Opener. This is only possible because of Camouflage.

Initiative

Initiative is an extremely powerful Talent for PvP. With Initiative, a Rogue can receive 3 Combo Points for a single Cheap Shot! This makes it very easy to follow up a Cheap Shot with a full 6-second Kidney Shot!

Ghostly Strike

Ghostly Strike is mostly used in Sinister Strike based PvP Builds, which aren't that common, most builds opt for either Hemorrhage or Backstab. Some Rogues will opt for 4 points in Camouflage for 1 point in Ghostly Strike, but it is mostly preference.

Improved Ambush

Improved Ambush is a must have Talent for a PvP Backstab Rogue. Nothing is more satisfying than hitting someone with a Vanish into Critical Strike Ambush, completely deleting their character.

Setup

Setup is unfortunately a lackluster Talent in Classic. The Rogue is already rolling the dice on Dodges and Resists, even after taking into account Evasion, a mere 45% to get a free Combo Point isn't really worth it. It isn't until Wrath of the Lich King that it gets buffed to 100% after investing 3 points, becoming much more viable.

Improved Sap

Improved Sap is an absolute must have Talent in PvP, allowing a Rogue to fight multiple Enemy Targets at once. Unfortunately, even after the 3 points are invested, there is still a 10% chance the Rogue can lose Stealth, after using Sap on an Enemy.

Serrated Blades

Serrated Blades doesn't offer much for a PvP Rogue, only really taken because it is a requirement to get to Hemorrhage. Rupture isn't used against most targets in PvP, unless a Rogue is fighting one versus one against a Warrior, where the Rogue can "Bleed Kite" the Warrior, using Garrote, Rupture, and Crippling Poison II.

Heightened Senses

Heightened Senses is a great Talent for PvP Rogues, willing to invest deep into the Subtlety Tree. Similar to Master of Deception, it helps significantly against Enemy Rogues. While the 4% Chance to Resist Spells is nothing to scoff at, after stacking enough Shadow Resistance from Bloodfang Armor, this Talent can have a massive impact against Warlocks or Shadow Priests.

Preparation

Preparation is the most powerful PvP Talent in a Rogue's toolkit. Allowing the Rogue access to a second Vanish and a second Blind over the course of a single encounter is just broken. Something not to be overlooked, Preparation also resets things like Gouge, Kick, Kidney Shot, or even Distract!

Dirty Deeds

Dirty Deeds is another must have PvP Talent. Reducing Cheap Shot to 40 Energy, which makes it much easier to Open up and do significant burst damage, right after Cheap Shot, potentially enabling a follow-up Kidney Shot, if you stacked enough Combo Points. Dirty Deeds also makes it significantly easier to have enough Energy in the middle of a fight for a Vanish into Cheap Shot, netting even more Combo Points.

Hemorrhage

Hemorrhage is an extremely powerful PvP Talent because of it being the lowest costing Combo Point Generator, costing a mere 35 Energy. This enables the PvP Rogue to stack Combo Points much faster, for less Energy invested, enabling more Eviscerate, Kidney Shot, or even Expose Armor on some occasions.

Deadliness

Deadliness is where the good PvP Talents in Subtlety stop. 10% Increase to Attack Power is actually not significant, only increasing the damage output by a small margin. Most importantly, going this deep into the Subtlety Tree severely limits access to other great Talents in other Trees, which are necessary to excel in PvP.

Premeditation

Premeditation is actually not the worst 31 point Talent, that honor goes to Vigor. Unfortunately, by the time a Rogue reaches the bottom of the Subtlety Tree, it is likely the Rogue will already have access to Initiative. Which means it will happen quite frequently that the Rogue will Open with Premeditation, Cheap Shot. and Initiative triggers. The Rogue is now at 5 Combo Points before even hitting the Enemy Target. So then the best option is to just Backstab and not gain any Combo Points, which just feels bad.

Leveling WoW Classic Rogue Talent Builds

Swords: As the name probably suggests, this is the spec you will use if you are using swords as your weapons, sword spec, and dagger spec only differ in a few talents that give you benefit via weapon type. I'd recommend using swords if you are leveling solo, and especially if this is your first time leveling rogue; this spec takes less finesse and is more in line with doing a solid rotation and efficiently pulling mobs. It's worth noting that although it's called "Sword" spec, you don't need to wear Swords, you'll use the best weapon available to you.

Daggers: This spec is what I would consider if you were an expert rogue player OR if you were in a consistent group while leveling. Daggers generally provide a higher damage output because of the early talents available in the subtlety talent tree that provide bonus damage to your Dagger-requiring abilities. It's important to note that you will need to be behind the enemy to use most of your abilities as this spec, so unless you are in a consistent group or are comfortable getting behind enemy NPCs, I'd suggest you avoid playing this spec for your first time.

I am very impressed with this guide overall. You included so much detail. Great talent build recommendation. I really like the individual points you made on each talent/abilities. Very great work!

While Sword Specialization is a good talent, it's hardly "the most important Talent for a PvE Raiding Rogue", nor does it "single handedly your damage".

Ideally, 5/5 Sword Specialization increased damage by up to 6% - that's factoring in recursive procs, a very fast OH (1.5 speed) combined with a slow MH (2.7 speed+), and deliberately assuming extra attacks proc’ed by yellow attacks still added 5% damage on average.

Sadly, the general theorycrafting consensus for classic is that extra attacks reset the MH swing timer, so extra attacks proc’ed by OH swings and yellow attacks effectively deal only half damage. All-in-all, that reduces 5/5 Sword Specialization’s damage increase to less than 4%, or slightly better for Horde due to Windfury Totem.

TLDR - all weapon specializations (but Mace Specialization, obviously) offer around the same damage increase.

Comment by Enfae

I'm surprised they don't list Stunlock Hemo build using maces.

Comment by Runnyeye

I am really disappointed that you don't list the most popular Vanilla PvP spec (21/8/22). While this dagger stunlock spec was one of the more challenging to play and relied heavily on CDs, it was the goto spec for daggers and was viable for pve as it maintained imp sap for 5 mans and could easily be in top 10 for dps if the player knew what they were doing...

Comment by wingo667

Unless I'm mistaken, Seal Fate 30/21/0 should handily beat 30/16/5 for damage, simply because Dual Wield Specialization adds around the same DPS as Opportunity pretty early on, and scales better. As an added bonus, you gain a decent DPS cooldown (Blade Flurry), and you're doing much more competitive DPS when forced to use Sinister Strike, without being locked into Swords.

Sample calculation, assuming 10% Hit, 20% Crit (gear + talents), and - for simplicity - a 1.7 speed Dagger:
using W = Weapon DPS + AP-based DPS

We have

Offhand DPS = 130% * 50% * W * (15.2% * 200% + 40% * 65% + 20.9% * 100% )

Backstab DPS = 1/6 * (W * 1.7 * 1.5 + 210) * (45.2% * 230% + 54.8% * 100% )

condensed to

Offhand DPS = 50.2% * W

Backstab DPS = 55.6 + 67.5% * W

results in:

Dual Wield Spec DPS Gains (+50%) = 25.1% * W

Opportunity DPS Gains (+20%) = 11.1 + 13.5% * W

At W >= 95.6 DPS, Dual Wield Spec is already equal, and pulls away fast - that's a 40 DPS Dagger, and slightly less than 800 AP. Hit, Crit, and especially +Weapon skill (which is downright mandatory for PvE, anyhow) all work in favor of Dual Wield Spec.

edit: included 4.8% crit suppression

The article offers a decent overview of basic builds, but it has several serious issues that prevent it from being a truly professional guide.
There is no adaptation to the reality of current WoW Classic Era, especially in PvP! It provides a fair summary of talents and playstyles, but lacks practical experience and structured presentation — such as what actually works under current server conditions, which builds are outdated or niche, what rotation and gear to use for each build, where to get weapons for a particular setup, misjudgment of some talents, and a total absence of rotations, BIS items, macros, and strategies.
The article needs a serious rewrite to be recommendable to either beginner or experienced Rogues.
