Professions Guide And Best Professions For Each Class/Role - WoW Classic

Profession GuidesWoW Classic Profession System

Production Professions - Players collect recipes, granting them the ability to craft powerful gear which can be equipped or traded. Some professions offer additional perks in the form of powerful BoP crafted items. Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Cooking, Engineering, Leatherworking, and Tailoring are Production Professions.

Service Professions - These professions do not generate trade goods that are equipable, but they allow the player to still create items that benefit players. Enchanting and First Aid are Service Professions.

Gathering Professions - These professions supplement Production professions, allowing players to acquire materials that are required to create the powerful trade goods. Herbalism, Mining, Skinning, and Fishing are Gathering Professions.

Other - These skills are ones we do not think of as traditional crafting or gathering ones, like Riding, Poisons, and Pickpocketing.

Engineering - Goblin, Gnomish

Leatherworking - Dragonscale, Elemental, Tribal

Differences Between Classic and Later WoW Systems

Inscription, Jewelcrafting, and Archaeology are not present in WoW Classic, but First Aid is a Secondary Skill that all players can learn.

There is no Journal or Specialization tree.

There are no ways to automatically relearn recipes when discarding and retraining a profession.

There is no Reagent tab in the bank.

Profession recipes do not have ranks.

There are no systems to trade or convert reagents other than Alchemy Transmutes.

The Darkmoon Faire does not provide profession skill-up quests.

Alchemists must go to specific Alchemy Labs inside instances to create the best flasks.

Enchanters can only enchant others' equipment via the trade window. There are no vellums that can be placed on the AH.

You cannot track both Mining and Herbalism nodes at the same time.

Mining nodes take multiple strikes to loot out completely, but you only get skill on the first hit.

Gathering nodes are not share-tapped by other players. Once a node has been looted, it disappears. Only one player can loot an herb node. Multiple players can try to extract mining nodes, but it's considered extremely rude if you didn't agree to it in advance.

Gathering herbs or ore does not grant experience.

Ore must be smelted into bars to use in Engineering and Blacksmithing recipes.

Fishing requires that you equip a Fishing Pole in your main weapon slot. If you get attacked while fishing, you may need to change to your weapons.

You cannot fish in zones too high for your fishing skill; if it's much higher, you'll get a message that you cannot fish there.

If you are allowed to fish in an area but your skill is low, you may get "Your fish got away!" when you try to fish. You can only get skill if you catch something.

Profession Skillups

Orange: 100% chance to get a skillup

Yellow: Frequently

Green: Infrequently

Grey: Never

Orange mobs will not always grant a Skinning skillup.

All fish can contribute to skill-ups. As your skill increases, it will take more catches to reach the next skill point. "Your fish got away" will yield no fish and no skillups.

You will need a Fishing Pole equipped to catch fish.

Your success chance at catching the fish is reliant on your Fishing skill. Higher-level zones will have a higher skill threshold.

Some fish are seasonal, while others only appear during the night or day.

You can catch oversized trophy fish, such as 42 Pound Redgill.

You can acquire Floating Wreckage, which can contain alcohol such as Rumsey Rum Black Label.

Deviate Fish can turn you into funny things.

Zulian MudskunkBest Profession Pairings

Alchemy pairs best with Herbalism, as reagents from those professions are needed for potions, flasks, and elixirs. At higher levels, Mining ore is needed for transmutes. Alchemists should also pursue Fishing, as they will need fish for several recipes.

Blacksmithing pairs best with Mining, as you will need lots of ore.

Enchanting pairs best with Tailoring, but also with Leatherworking, or Blacksmithing, as those professions generate gear that can be disenchanted. Tailoring is generally most common, as you can loot cloth needed for Tailored items without having to learn a gathering profession (such as Skinning for Leatherworking).

Engineering pairs best with Mining, as it requires lots of ore.

Leatherworking pairs best with Skinning, as you will need those reagents for crafted gear.

Mining pairs best with either Engineering or Blacksmithing, production professions that require ore.

Skinning pairs best with Leatherworking, as it is required to craft many recipes.

Tailoring pairs best with Enchanting, as players can convert cloth into Tailored items and then disenchant them. Items from Skinning are also required for Tailoring, to a lesser extent than cloth.

Best Professions For Each Class and Role

The profession provides the best ammunition, Thorium Shells

Hunters can Feign Death and then use Jumper Cables in the hopes of quickly resurrecting a healer between wipes.

They can use scopes such as Biznicks 247x128 Accurascope on their ranged weapons.

Enjoyed the overview, ty!

I spotted one error, "Onyxia Scale Cloak is an essential item your raid will need for Onyxia's Lair."

Shouldn't that read for Nef? If you needed it for Ony I could see that being an issue!

Look forward to using the site once WoW is reborn.

Very nice overview indeed.

If you thought that all was told, there are still some funny things like the Robes of Arcana, which is required for a class specific quest on a warlock if i remember correctly. The Pattern: Robes of Arcana for that is only dropped by some mages on a tower in Darkshore (and judging by the comments some other Alliance area). I farmed mine at Darkshore, so i cannot confirm the other drop spot. This was especially nice to farm for a Horde character since there are no flying mounts at all in Classic and the area is Alliance homeland meaning there is no flight path available to Horde in the area. You will have to run or use a ground mount (max speed increase 100%) to get there (pretty far north as well) from the shores of Ashenvale.

Another one is the Gordok Ogre Suit taught by completing The Gordok Ogre Suit required for a peaceful walkthrough through Dire Maul. From Classic till before Cataclysm Dire Maul was still connected all the way (you could go from east to north and north to west), so it probably will be again when the Classic server goes live. The secret entrance near the Horde camp also leads to the instance but requires an Crescent Key if i remember that one correctly too.

You will encounter a lot of items needed by quests from the different professions.

This is a great overview of how some of the professions differed from live and the basics of helping people select classic professions. Just curious though, in the differences between classic and BFA section I didn't see anything about Gathering nodes, ore and herbs, giving experience. Wasn't the experience gains added in a later expansion? I seem to recall them not giving experience when gathered before but I could be wrong.

Comment by Asheeva

"Elixirs are split into Battle, which provides DPS benefits, and Guardian, which provides defensive benefits."
This is false for classic. Pretty sure this came with patch 2.0.

Comment by Gexu

Wasn't there something about the gathering professions, that they gave an bonus to some of the primary stats when you had leveled them to a max in the different steps? When you became an apprentice in mining, you got another 5 in stamina or so, making mining the go to profession for tanks?

Correction/addition:

"Some professions have additional subclasses, with unique recipes:
Engineering - Goblin, Gnomish
Leatherworking - Dragonscale, Elemental, Tribal"

And Blacksmithing (armorsmith weaponsmith)

Comment by Krysteen

Typo Watch:

Gathering notes are not shared-tap among players.

Comment by Viserate

Just curious as to why Archaeology was left off the list. I realize it's not the most popular profession, but there are a number of achievements associated with that profession. Or at the very least, state at the top you have selected to omit Archaeology from the profession listings.

Orange: 100% chance to get a skillup: Incorrect at least for skinning.
Just started leveling skinning on a 60 hunter. Consistently been 3-7 (as high as 9) skins before level up occurs with level orange creatures. This is not including failed tries.
Failures and non-skillup have been much more frequent than leveling up. Not sure if this is a bug. But I am sure it is 'working as intended'.
Just don't get false hopes that every level orange is going to get you skill up.

Typo:

These professions do not generate trade goods that are equiabble...

Comment by 123user

Great guide! This has just the level of detail you need to cover all bases and provide new players the big picture without being too overwhelming.

For new players interested in making money, the time-tested combination of Herbalism and Mining works best, as these trade goods become valuable quite early on and they also happen to be highly liquid assets. If, on the other hand, you're interested in performing at the highest level in end-game content, you will want to choose Engineering (potentially paired with Mining to assist in acquisition of materials) as the bombs (namely Goblin Sapper Charge) and trinkets (Arcanite Dragonling and Gnomish Battle Chicken) are going to be the best boon to your DPS.

A few minor typographical errors from the guide:"equipable" technically correct, but should be "equippable" (standard spelling in gaming contexts).
"equitable gear" should be "equippable gear" (equitable means fair, not wearable).
"req" informal shorthand; consider spelling out the whole word.
"providing players with leather, herbs, and scales" herbs in Skinning section, probably meant "hides".
"Zul Gurub" should be "Zul'Gurub".
"Leatherworkers can transmute Salt Shaker" should be "transmute with Salt Shaker".
"allowing them to Herb" informal shorthand; should be "allowing them to gather herbs".

There were a few smaller mistakes, such as missing spaces and apostrophes, using hyphens instead of dashes and inconsistent capitalizations/hyphenations and so on, but they weren't distracting enough to point out!
