A wand is a priest's best friend, get one ASAP! With Wand Specialization, you do the most wand DPS of any class.

Priests have great sustain. It's important to try to maximize this by finishing mobs with your wand and letting Spirit Tap quickly regen your mana.

Keep uptime on Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire, as they make you quite tanky for a clothie.

As soon as around level 20, you should start banking gear specific to healing (prioritize any gear with high +Int, for a bigger mana pool, and +Healing) so you can avoid respecs while still healing dungeons comfortably.

Don't forget to level your defense skill! This is often overlooked. You should be letting mobs hit you sometimes (safely of course).

To increase kill speed, learn new ranks of your most used spells ASAP.

To save money, feel free to skip abilities you likely won't use often. There will be a list of some of these below.

Try to get water from mages whenever possible (don't forget to tip!). This can save a lot by not having to buy vendor water.

Best Gear and Weapons for Priests in HardcoreNotable Hardcore Progression Items

Level 6-10 - Look to buy Lesser Magic Wand from the auction house ASAP, if not making your own.

Level 13-18 - Greater Magic Wand is your next big wand upgrade, or look to get Dwarven Flamestick or Torchlight Wand later from quests.

Level 18+ If not Tailoring, you can start looking for more +Spirit and +Int items, such as Heavy Woolen Pants, Gloves of Meditation, and Lesser Wizard's Robe, on the Auction House.

Level 18-22 - Look to get Cookie's Stirring Rod, Lavishly Jeweled Ring, and Staff of Westfall from Deadmines.

Level 26-30 - Silk Mantle of Gamn are typically your first great shoulders, found questing in the Wetlands.

Level 26-30 - Go into Blackfathom Deeps as soon as your comfortable to get the almighty Gravestone Scepter.

Level 28-32 - Make sure to do Stockades after Deadmines, to get Seal of Wrynn.

Level 38-42 - Both Rod of Sorrow and Burning Sliver are great around this level, but you will need a group.

Level 40-46 - Dreamweave items such as Dreamweave Vest are huge if you do not already have better Head, Chest, or Gloves.

Level 50-60 - Noxious Shooter and Rod of Corrosion are awesome late game wands, if you want to brave the dungeon(s) for them.

Stat Prioritylook for the following stats when getting upgrades:

Spirit
Intellect
Stamina

Alchemy paired with Herbalism is a great option for Priests. Extra mana potions and boosts like Arcane Elixir and Elixir of Greater Intellect are really helpful. You will also benefit from selling potions (and leftover herbs) on the Auction House. Pairing this with Fishing (if you are willing to spend the time leveling it) is great to expand your crafting ability, with items such as Elixir of Water Breathing. This will tend to take a bit longer to level than Tailoring.

Tailoring paired with Skinning is also a powerful choice for Priests. Skinning makes great gold, whether sold to vendors or on the Auction House, and it is used in a few tailoring recipes. Tailoring can makes moderate upgrades in early levels, to increase your Spirit and Intellect, like Heavy Woolen Pants, Gloves of Meditation, and Lesser Wizard's Robe. Tailoring really pays off later, when you can craft items such as the Dreamweave set (Dreamweave Circlet, Dreamweave Gloves, Dreamweave Vest). These kinds of items are massive for you, and they can make you a good bit of gold on the Auction House. Tailoring is also one of the least time-intensive professions.

Enchanting paired with Tailoring is also worth mentioning. As well as give yourself the above mentioned upgrades, Tailoring is great for creating items to disenchant, although Enchanting takes significant time to level and enchants don't get very strong until much later. You will be able to make some gold enchanting other player's gear, as well as craft your own wands early on (Lesser Magic Wand and Greater Magic Wand).

Secondary Professions

Even though you have many heals, First Aid is still really valuable to level. It is handy being able to heal without breaking your mana regen or to use Psychic Scream into a bandage when in tight spot. One thing to keep in mind if you plan to go Tailoring is that it will require lots of cloth, but the Auction House is always an option here if you do not want to grind humanoids.

Cooking is good to have on Priest, primarily for the extra Spirit. Priests love every bit of Sspirit to help boost their sustain. Of course, Stamina is always appreciated in Hardcore, for the extra health.

Fishing is the most time intensive secondary profession, but it has some benefits. Pairing with Cooking is great, for consumables like Smoked Sagefish, or with Alchemy, for potions like Elixir of Water Breathing.

Spells To Buy While LevelingSome spells that are important no matter your build:

Look to take all or at least most of your healing spell and Power Word: Shield upgrades. Even if you only use a couple, it's great to have options in a pinch, and these all become more effective with upgrades.

Always upgrade Shadow Word: Pain when possible, as no matter the build, it does great damage over time for the mana cost.

Inner Fire and Power Word: Fortitude make you quite tanky for a clothie and should be upgraded when possible.

Levitate can be an absolute life saver if you happen to find yourself flying off a cliff or something—make sure to get feathers!

Mind Soothe and Mind Control and even Mind Vision are incredibly powerful, and great Priests know how to use them effectively.

Spells that you can skip or delay getting upgraded:

If going Shadow, feel free to skip Smite and Holy Fire upgrades.

This probably doesn't need to be said, but you can skip Resurrection, since this is Hardcore and all.

If going Holy/Discipline, feel free to skip Mind Blast upgrades.

Shadowguard and Feedback are typically easy skips.

Fade upgrades can be skipped until you head into a Dungeon, where it really comes in handy if you get too much threat.

Great guide. Only take that I disagree with is taking Spirit Tap before Wand Spec. 25% wand damage is far more relevant and useful when you are hardly casting any spells in that level range. As soon as you get a Lesser Magic wand, you bubble, MB once and the rest of your DPS is wand until dead. You're back out of 5SR and mana refilled without Spirit Tap. The 25% compounds even more strongly once you get/craft your Greater wand at L13. Offensive spell casting is super minimal, so the benefit from Spirit Tap is largely wasted. Give me 25% more DPS from my main DPS source all day long.

It's worth noting that Shadowform and the Shadow Weaving debuff increase all shadow damage, not just shadow spell damage like provided by Darkness. This means that the damage from shadow wands are increased. There are few shadow wands available after level 40, but notably, the Blackbone Wand, sold by vendors in most major cities, is a shadow wand available at lvl 41.

Spirit Tap is not worth taking. This guide doesn't take into account that you're not going to be running around at the speed of sound leveling, so sitting down to drink isn't really an issue so you don't need Spirit Tap for anything. It's better to not waste 5 talents for that and spend it elsewhere.
