Hardcore WoW Mage Leveling Guide - 1-60 WoW Classic

Expansive Mind increases your mana pool, which lets you either continue to finish off mobs in tough fights or get off one last Frost Nova or Polymorph in order to get away from a sticky situation. Also, though minor, it does increase your crit chance on spells, which certainly adds up over the course of your journey to 60.

Escape Artist is super handy for getting out of webs or nets and even removes poisons that slow. It's a short cooldown and costs no mana. Though Mages also have Blink, it is quite mana expensive and should be used as a second option for escape if you roll Gnome.

Keep rank 1 of your Frost abilities handy to quickly slow mobs when needed, especially Frostbolt, Cone of Cold, and Frost Nova. Also, rank 1 of Blizzard is very handy in dungeons if you take the Improved Blizzard talent.

Ensure that you are buffed and have mana gem(s) available before each encounter.

Don't forget to level your defense skill! This is often overlooked. You should be letting mobs hit you sometimes (safely of course).

Learn new ranks of spells ASAP to increase kill speed. Being able to teleport to your trainer makes this easy.

With the above, you can save a lot of gold by learning only abilities you plan to use (for example, Arcane Missiles can be skipped in most my runs).

MP/5 is important to help with sustain. Grab a wand off the auction house early on (if not making your own or finding one) and try using it to finish mobs, to start your mana regen.

Using Mana Shield will quickly drain your mana and is not recommended unless you are in trouble

Though making food and water is great, if you want to decrease your downtime, you can use the better food and water from vendors earlier if you are willing to pay.

Mage Leveling Rotation in HardcoreSingle Target Frost Rotation

Put Ice Barrier on (when available at 40).

Frostbolt once or twice until mob reaches you.

Rank 1 Frost Nova.

Move back and Frostbolt.

Repeat until the mob is dead. Look to finish with your wand, to start mana regen.

Fire Rotation

Pop Combustion if not already running.

Pyroblast from max distance.

Fireball until mob reaches you.

If not in danger, let the mob hit you to gain defense skill. Burning Soul will help with pushback.

Move back and Frostbolt and/or Blast Wave, if needed, to gain distance.

You can mix in Fire Blast, and use your wand to start mana regen.

Level 6-10 - A wand is the most important thing early on. Look to buy Lesser Magic Wand from the auction house ASAP, if not making your own.

Level 13-18 - Greater Magic Wand is your next big wand upgrade, or look to get Dwarven Flamestick or Torchlight Wand later, from quests.

Level 18-22 - Deadmines is great for Mages. Look to get Cookie's Stirring Rod, Lavishly Jeweled Ring, and either Emberstone Staff or Staff of Westfall.

Level 21-24 - Though the earlier staves with more stats are recommended, Icicle Rod is a decent early option for Frost Mages.

Level 25-30 - If Frost, Azure silk items like Azure Silk Vest are typically worth making or buying if you can.

Level 26-30 - Silk Mantle of Gamn are typically your first great shoulders.

Level 26-30 - Blackfathom Deeps is great for getting the quest reward Gravestone Scepter.

Level 28-32 - Make sure to do Stockades after Deadmines, to get Seal of Wrynn.

Level 38-42 - Later, its important to get Icefury Wand or its counterpart for your spec, as it's your best till 60.

Level 40-46 - Dreamweave items such as Dreamweave Vest are huge if you do not already have better head, chest, or gloves.

Stat Priority for Leveling Mages

Tailoring paired with Skinning is a common and powerful choice. Skinning makes great gold, whether sold to vendors or on the auction house, and is used in a few tailoring recipes. Tailoring can make moderate upgrades in early levels—even more for Frost builds, with items such as Azure Silk Vest. This profession really pays off later, when you can craft items such as the Dreamweave set (Dreamweave Circlet, Dreamweave Gloves, Dreamweave Vest). These kinds of items are massive for you and can make you a good bit of gold on the Auction House. Also, all Mages can start dreaming about making their own Robe of the Archmage if they make it to 60.

Mining paired with Engineering is a strong combo, particularly with AOE builds or with playstyles that don't go deep into the Frost talents and lack the protection and additional crowd control it provides. Items like Target Dummy can be made fairly early on and can save your life in bad spots. Grenades like Rough Copper Bomb provide stuns (including interrupting enemy casts) and more damage. ,Also Flying Tiger Goggles are one of the first headpieces available and have upgrade options as you level.

Alchemy paired with Herbalism is also viable. Extra mana potions and boosts like Arcane Elixir and Elixir of Firepower (for Fire Mages) certainly are great. Also, you will benefit from selling potions (and leftover herbs) on the Auction House. One downside is that items like Elixir of Wisdom do not stack with your Arcane Intellect, so Mages don't benefit as greatly from Alchemy as other casters.

Secondary Professions

First Aid is certainly the most valuable for almost every class in Hardcore, including Mage. Polymorph or Frost Nova allow you to bandage and recover a significant amount of health, which is very valuable. Bandaging is also much faster recovery between mobs than eating (if you do not need more mana as well). One thing to keep in mind if you plan to go Tailoring is that it will require a lot of cloth, but the Auction House is always an option here if you do not want to grind humanoids.

Cooking is viable, but whether it is worth the time to level is up to you. AOE Mages will likely find the Stamina buff the most useful, as they take quite a bit of damage, but most other Mages are quite powerful and safe and should not need the buffs here often.

Fishing is the most time intensive secondary profession. Most players will likely prefer to skip leveling this, unless paired with Cooking for consumables, like Smoked Sagefish, or with Alchemy for potions, like Elixir of Water Breathing.

Spells To Buy While LevelingSome spells that are important no matter your build:

Make sure to grab Frostbolt or Fireball, even if you build into the opposite talents, for mobs that are resistant to fire or frost damage.

Conjure Water upgrades should be grabbed ASAP, where Conjure Food upgrades can typically wait a few levels.

Conjure Mana Agate upgrades are important—and remember, you can have multiple kinds of gems up at once.

Mage Armor is great for sustain and is what you will likely be primarily wearing, once available

Spells that are easy skips while leveling:

Amplify Magic is so situational, you will likely never find a time to cast this.

Detect Magic will likely never help.

Arcane Missiles is fun, but if not using an Arcane build, it is an easy pass.

Dampen Magic, Fire Ward and Frost Ward are really helpful when up against other casters but learning higher ranks can wait.

I would love to hear why the author chose 3/3 FrostBite instead of 3/3 Permafrost.

The last thing you should want is an RNG root while either trying to pull or separate single mobs or worse be doing ANY KIND of AoE and have 2 mobs get rooted but the others keep running. Speccing into permafrost slows the mobs (and more important ALL MOBS) by a superb amount and causes the slow to last longer.

I have seen plenty of mages die because a mob got rooted and a pat caught it.. Where as simply a more powerful slow would have kept the mage out of danger AND allowed the mob to continue moving and thus NOT be noticed by the patrol.

I think staying in the Frost Tree and putting points into Frost Warding, Improved Cone of Cold, and Permafrost (instead of Frostbite) until you get closer to 60 is much safer for solo leveling.

These guides seem to be very alliance-centric with the gearing. It would be nice to see the options for horde.
