How to Unlock the Highmountain Tauren Allied Race

Ain't No Mountain High Enough: This achievement includes the Highmountain storyline, which should take a few hours to complete. Reference the Highmountain Overview and Leveling Path Guide if you need assistance with any quest.

Allied Races: Highmountain Tauren: You must then complete a special recruitment quest which demonstrates why the Highmountain Tauren have decided to join the Horde and expands a little more on the story from Spiritwalker Ebonhorn.

It seems a little boring to me...Tauren with antlers, nothing more...boring druid forms...i think i skip that race in Battle For Azeroth.

I am so excited to play these. Ive been a Tauren player since BC and this kind of love for the race I think is beyond awesome. I'll definitely race change my druid to one as soon as possible, probably play up a Warrior or Shaman as well, love their totem and their racial armor!

Comment by OrferVan

I'm planning to roll all the new races, each being 1 different class I don't have max level yet, so with my already existing 110 characters I can have ~14 characters, to have room for the next allied races coming during the expansion.
I however have no idea what to do with highmountain tauren, I can't make them druids because i already have one and am planning to make a zandalari one too, depending on their flying form being the classic bat or something new.So apart from monk and druid what should I roll them?
PS: Only really like the idea of survival hunters on them, dont think bows will be a nice match.

Comment by Waterfuzz

Well, now we'll have cows with deer antlers. Yay?

Comment by spartangr13f

Just a silly edit but
"Monk: Tank or Melee Leather DPS"
aren't monk's supposed to be healer's as well?

Comment by Jefffurry

Didn't realize there would be class restrictions, so my plan to make my Tauren Paladin into a Highmountain Paladin seems to be a non-starter.
Maybe after BfA is released they'll relax the restrictions.

On my alliance server, Khaz-Modan, I have several 110 characters.
- I have the Ain't No Mountain High Enough and Highmountain Tribe achievements
- I also have the Insurrection and The Nightfallen achievements

On my horde server, Shadow Council, I have only a few level 90ish characters.

Can I get the recruitment scenario on my horde characters if I don't have any at 110? I desperately wan't to start working on a Highmountain Tauren character.

Thanks.

Comment by Codex435

So we get moose antlers which is cool and all but they just completely avoid updating the Moonkin form so I'm a moose antler tauren unless I go moonkin in which that for still has normal Tauren horns? Blizzard over sight which is really annoying.

Comment by Phoebelle

About heritage armor. Guys, do you know if you have to level only once to get it for all future chars of that race? Even if they are boosted?

Comment by Muratsuki

The quest Whispers of the Darkness also needs to be completed to unlock them. It should be obtained at the same time as Ice and Shadow.

Comment by Flawis

Just a quick question, to unlock Highmountain Tauren, do I have to be exalted with Highmountain with a horde character or will being exalted with an alliance char. work too? I'm barely at revered with horde but close with my ally.

Comment by 602603

So I started the second quest (Shadow over Thunder Bluff), but somewhere along the line the quest was abandoned. I went back to the emissary building in Org to pick it up again, but it isn't there. I also check in mulgore where we turn in "A feast of our kin".Does anyone know where I can go back to get quest? Blaine is there in the building but offers nothing... HELP!

I really wish they had Newfie accents because I keep giving mine Canadian-esqe names like "TimHorton"

This race looks awesome ! You can do some nice transmogs with those horns ',..,'

Comment by 714845

when are you going to update highmauntain tauren to the profiles, so i can check incompleted quest and such like older races?

Comment by Goldwolf676

So my question is are the heirloom gear considered a boost because they give an experience boost? Or does it just mean the purchased instant 100 or now 110 boost that you buy through the store? This is in regards to the heritage armor.

Comment by pelaaja0

Once earned, the heritage armor can be used by any Highmountain alts, including low level, boosted and race changed ones.

8/8/2018 update-

if you are having problems with getting the scenario started after the update, you probably have the new scenario in your quest log for the new BFA scenario. because sylvanis is active for both the highmountian quest and the new scenario... you must complete the new scenario first before you can speak with her to do the quest for highmountian. i ran around different cities... logged in and out... switched toons... nothing fixed it. then i decided to try to complete the scenario and poof! i can talk to her in the embassy again! just had to pass the info along just in case anyone else was having the same issue i was. if i can help one person as much as this site has helped me ill be happy ^^.

If I reach exalted with an ally character, how do I get to the embassy in Orgrimmar to start the unlocking quest?
Or else, If I reach exalted with an ally character, can I then start the quest chain with a 110 Horder character who is not exalted?

Comment by ShizenUshi

Once I unlock the Highmountain Tauren and do a race change to it on my 38 hunter, will i still be able to work towards heritage armor?

Comment by sivla

The fact is, with the deliberate lack of normal quests that give reputation for high mountain (unlike nightfallen), you can't just grind your way through the normal quests, because at some point the quests just cease and you are no longer able to obtain high mountain tauren rep unless you do high tauren rep world quests, which frankly are so few in number daily, it will take a long while to obtain exalted, unless you use table to grind rep, but since that is pure rng just like the chain wq for each zone that gives 1500, its completely unreliable.
The very fact if they had created enough quests to obtain exalted with a few wq bolted on wouldnt have mattered to them or us, it would have allowed us to make a decision on whether we wanted to rep grind by continuing questing in the area...there is bugger all difference between a normal quest or a world quest, except the world quests are random few spawns in a zone.
This is truly an awful rep grind for all that is , is just a repaint. high mountain tauren are nothing to the lore, they are just there end of.
That doesnt mean i dont want them, but if i was a new player....all the rep grind gated new repainted races would be completely passed by, which is supposed to be the opposite of what they want...you playing the way they want you to do.

So...besides reading this guide, how would I know to go to the Horde Embassy in Orgrimmar after I finish the Exalted achievement? Nothing tells me to do that in the game once I unlock it. They really need to give you an insta-quest or something that will guide you. I thought I had done something wrong!

For those of you who have not unlocked the Highmountain Tauren as of Feb. 2020 (like me):

There are 4 tiers of reputation that you must work though in order to become exalted with Highmountain. Neutral (3,000 rep), Friendly (6,000 rep), Honored (12,000 rep) and Revered (21,000 rep).

The main story-line quests for Highmountain will take you from Neutral to mid-way through Honored. After completing the story-line quests, you'll have to be diligent and patient to work through the remaining ~25,000 rep. Daily World Quests only award 150 reputation per quest and if you do the math, it will take a very long time to become exalted. The World Quests that you really want to look for are the ones with the Gold Elite symbol around a blue dot on your map. Those award between 350-500 rep and are rare, so complete them when they appear!

The Neltharion's Lair rep grinding method by killing Naraxas (the third boss of that dungeon) over and over is the main way to earn Highmountain rep and it awards 250 rep per kill. It is cumbersome, but it can be done by playing a couple hours per day for about 1.5-2 weeks.

This has been been my experience with trying to unlock the Highmountain Tauren and I hope you find it useful/helpful!

I'm having trouble getting the scenario to unlock. I go to the embassy and see that I need to have a level 45 Horde character and to unlock Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

I have checked and got the achievement on 4/30/2020 with an Alliance character. I also have checked and have a level 45 Horde character. The embassy tabard tells me that I have everything complete.

I have checked that I don't have any BFA missions or anything that is keeping it from happening, but it still won't launch.

I have opened a ticket but would appreciate any help out there.

Thanks

Comment by Bufe

Whispers of the darkness is picked up together with Ice and Shadow and should be included.

Comment by dekethegeek

I know this is an older post, but I received the HT with an Honored rep.

Comment by Nosferatu86

For any of those wondering, I am legit sad it wasn't posted here already but the mining speed racial does not stack with any of the mining speed enchants. I am sad, was hoping to be the fastest miner ever... but just the same as those with glove enchants.

Comment by psychoviolent

As of December 2022 (Dragonflight expansion) you NO LONGER need the achievement "Ain't no mountain high enough" to unlock the Highmountain Tauren race.

You can start this quest by finding the NPC in Orgrimmar with your level 70 as I did with my level 70 holy paladin. It took me 2 hours at most. Be ready to fight it out because some of the mobs are no joke. If you know how to handle yourself in combat you will be fine.

Completing this questline that starts and ends with Ji Firepaw will give you the achievement, race unlock and mount.

Comment by Trylion

Double check your quest log, look for folders that say the race you want to unlock. For Highmountain there is folder and the quest starts in Mulgore. You probably forgot you picked it up.

Comment by RobotWorgen420

There is a quest between "Ice and Shadow" and "The Final Ward" called "Whispers of the Darkness".
