Ever since he felt abandoned by Velen, Chieftain Hatuun has borne a grudge against the Draenei who was once his friend. Now, finally, and in part thanks to the Draenei Heritage questline, it seems the two are ready to reconcile.
Stay Awhile
The Draenei Heritage armor questline centers around Tishamaat, a yearly sacrament once celebrated on Argus, during which Draenei reflect on the burdens of their past, learn from them, and commit to a path forward. In the lead up to the event, we learn that Velen has asked Chieftain Hatuun to help him with a demonic threat in Bloodmyst Isle. Hatuun is no fan of Velen's, and does not plan to attend the Tishamaat, but he comes to help - partly because he finds it satisfying when Velen admits he cannot solve a problem by himself.
Once the threat is dealt with, Velen presses Hatuun to attend the Tishamaat once again, adding that he's hoping to be able to speak with him there. This time, though still hesitant at first, Hatuun agrees.
At the Tishamaat, we are tasked with gathering Memory Stones from the draenei. These stones are inscribed with painful memories that the draenei wish to move on from, before being symbolically destroyed in the Flame of Reprieve. When we go to collect Velen and Hatuun's stones, we have the opportunity to stay awhile and listen to his conversation with Velen - during which Velen finally seems to convince him to consider reconciling.
Chieftain Hatuun says: You wanted to speak with me, Velen?
Prophet Velen says: Yes, of course. On a matter of great importance.
Chieftain Hatuun says: Well. Is it not always a matter of great importance with you?
Prophet Velen says: I suppose it is. But on this auspicious occasion, I was hoping we could reconcile. And return to a place of trust.
Chieftain Hatuun says: Some wounds take time to heal, Prophet. Though... Argus is far from this place. And feels like another life.
Prophet Velen says: We trusted one another once...
Chieftain Hatuun says: We were young... and foolish once as well.
Prophet Velen says: We were indeed. If we knew then what we know now...
Prophet Velen says: Hatuun, you have always been the best of us. I have missed your wisdom.
Prophet Velen says: Come. Serve with me again as you once did on our council. We need--I need--your guidance once more.
Chieftain Hatuun says: Velen, I...
Prophet Velen says: You do not have to answer me now. Enjoy the Tishamaat. But there will always be a seat open for you--if you want it.
Chieftain Hatuun says: Thank you. I will... I will think on it.
We can speak directly with Hatuun, who seems that he wants to believe in the future Velen offers - even if he doesn't quite yet. At the least, he seems impressed to see other Broken at the Tishamaat, when for years he had heard Velen turned a blind eye to their plight.
For thousands of years. all I could see when I looked at Argus was what it once was. A double-vision that fled from me whenever I focused too closely.
And now Velen asks me to return to what I once was. To what we both were.
<Hatuun crosses his arms more tightly>
I... need time to think.
What do you think of the other krokul?
It is... uncomfortable to know that krokul exist beyond Argus. on this "Draenor" that Nobundo spoke of.
And it is unsurprising to hear that Velen turned a blind eye to their mistreatment all these years, despite claiming that they would be protected.
But inviting them to the Tishamaat is... something. It is more than words, at least.
Old Grudges
Chieftain Hatuun didn't always feel animosity towards Velen. Long ago, he even served on the Council to the Triumvirate, and when the time came for Velen and his followers to free Argus, Hatuun sacrificed himself - staying behind to help ensure Velen would have time to escape. When we returned to Argus during the events of Legion, Velen was amazed to find Hatuun still alive - now a Broken and leader of the Krokul of Argus.
Though he volunteered to remain on Argus, Hatuun came to resent Velen for leaving him, and when they met again, chided Velen for abandoning their home. And while Hatuun has shown himself willing to work with Velen, he has remained hostile, even as recently as during the Man'ari customization questline.
From
Pierre mémorielle de Velen
, we can see that he does understand Hatuun's anger. The flavor text reads,
"I could have convinced him. He wanted to be convinced."
As for
Pierre mémorielle de Hatuun
, it simply seems to reference a memory from long ago, but it does make us wonder. When Hatuun told Velen to "take the others and go", he also asked that he "keep my family safe". We have never heard anything of his family again. Is it longing for them that drove his bitterness for so long?
"Early morning in the Conservatory. Birdsong."
Hope for Future Customizations?
Of course, one question this raises is whether or not this means Broken customization options could become available sometime in the future. We suspect it would be more difficult to do than something like Man'ari customization - which is just a recolor - but at least lore-wise the groundwork has been laid. Playable Draenei were introduced with the Burning Crusade - along with the Blood Elves - so while Silvermoon gets an update in Midnight, maybe there will be some time for Broken customization.
For now, it's just nice to see Hatuun letting go of an old grudge, and to see Velen experience regaining an old friendship instead of loss. After so many years of hatred and division, Dragonflight has consistently explored themes of healing and unification, of peace and renewed bonds - just in time for Xal'atath to come along and blow things up.
