Some topics in the Diablo community will always spark controversy - Stash space, drop rates, itemization, and the in-game Shop have been some of the hot topics burning their way through circles of Wanderers since Diablo 4 launched. We've got our own opinions: read on to find out more about our take on the Gauntlet and Leaderboards allowing Private Profiles in Diablo 4!
We are now one week into the Gauntlet, Blizzard’s newest Diablo 4 feature, and feedback has been leaning towards negative. Some players are wondering what part of this basic, static-layout Dungeon took nine months to develop, while others are simply underwhelmed by the rewards. Something most players can agree on is that the Leaderboards leave much to be desired. Unlike previous installments of Diablo, the vast majority of players on the Leaderboards have their profile set to private, making their Gear and Active Skills invisible to the public.
There are two main questions here, the first being why Blizzard would implement a feature in a competitive ARPG that prevents players from seeing the general build elements of other players. While there are several viable builds for each class, it seems unlikely that the top Sorcerer running
Elektropeitsche
being common knowledge would somehow give other players an unfair advantage. Would the public knowing that Barbarian Sorcerer is one of the best duos really determine the meta, and would that be a
bad
thing? You can’t even see what class someone is playing for private profiles on the 2-Player, 3-Player, and 4-Player Leaderboards - who does this benefit? For some players, being on the Leaderboards with several random private profiles diminishes the sense of pride you might expect to feel for being one of the best at your class. For others, it creates a sense of vulnerability that leads to setting their profile to private as well.
This leads us to our second question: why are almost all profiles on the Leaderboards set to private? Aside from those who hide their profile because everyone else is doing it, the most reasonable explanation for this is that the best Diablo 4 players in the world want to keep their builds to themselves. It could be believed that the top 10, 50, even 100 players of each class consider their build to be game-changing enough that they don’t want their competitors to know what they’re up against. This is somewhat understandable, or rather it would be if it weren’t for the top contenders whose profiles
can
be viewed running with identical or nearly identical Active Skills, Legendary Aspects, and Uniques for their build. A few well-known players, who are arguably some of the best Diablo theory crafters out there, have kept their profiles public since the Gauntlet was released while still maintaining extremely high rankings on the Leaderboards. If some of the best, most build-pioneering players in the world aren't concerned with keeping their cards close to their chest, why is almost everyone else? And if this is the explanation for those bound for the Hall of the Ancients, why are almost all profiles ranked 500-1000 set to private?
Another possible explanation is that players are hiding something they don’t want others to see. If a player is using
Harlekinskrone
,
Der Großvater
, and
Ring der Sternenlosen Himmel
with one day played, something seems off. Maybe this is an alt using Uber Uniques from their main, they have friends hoarding Duriel summoning materials, this player cashed out all their seasonal earnings for summoning materials, or they just got
really lucky
with drops. It's hard, though, to believe that every single one of these players has the luck, friend pool, and summoning materials needed for this huge undertaking. It’s hard to imagine why anyone outside the top 100 players on any given Leaderboard would consider their build so groundbreaking that they would need to put newspaper over the windows in this situation, though, and we're clearly seeing it - but what we aren't seeing just doesn't make sense.
This isn’t to say that anyone owes the public an in-depth look at the most intimate details of their build, but that was never on the table in the first place. Passive Skills and even Active Skills that aren’t assigned to the Skill Bar don’t show up on profiles. You can’t blame players for utilizing a feature the way it was intended, but you can certainly ask why the feature exists in the first place. In a game hoping to be a successful, competitive ARPG, implementing a feature that allows complete secrecy on the Leaderboards seems questionable at best.
