As of build 8885:
When you walk up to this boss and his dragon, they will fly up into the air and start a gauntlet-style event. Waves of enemies will fill the path and more will appear perriodically, charging down the passage towards you. As this happens the dragon will constantly go "bombing runs", spraying the area with frost which ticks for damage every second if you stand in it.
Certain enemies which spawn periodically will carry harpoons. Any player may click these to pick them up, then, when the dragon is "in range of the harpoon guns" (you will get an on-screen alert to this fact) click a gun to fire a harpoon at the dragon. Once the dragon hits 0 hp Skadi will dismount and jump back up onto your platform to fight.
Most notable ability of Skadi is that he'll start doing a whirlwind style attack but can continue to move while doing so, and cannot be outrun. The attack lasts quite a while and may be targetted at a random party member, although I'm not sure of this. Either way running from the whirlwind won't work if you're the one he's chasing.
Note that this encounter can bug out and Skadi will lose his dragon but fail to leap up to the platform. When this happened to us we want back into the frozen creatures room and did that boss instead, and by the time we were done, the Skadi event had reset, allowing us to try again without resetting the whole instance.
Later in the instance Skadi reset yet again which can be a hassle if you wipe to the last boss. The door to the next area stays open luckily but you still have to run the gauntlet at least once to get to it.
The whirlwind can be outrun - it needs to be, it's very difficult to heal through on heroic otherwise.
Eye of Skadi should be a drop lol
in norse mythology, Skadi the Huntress was the goddess of hunting and winter. Thus the ice vrykul model.
in heroic, drop chance still to be found, but probably 1% like every dropped mount as of now.
Skadi's weapon is recolored, but uses the same model as
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
from Molten Core.
Its the same color as Sulfuron Hammer whuch is needed to craft hand of rag
It's a shame he doesn't drop his eye so that my auto-attacks slow people.
If you wish to try to complete the 2 associated Achievements with this boss, it is a good idea to pre-farm the harpoons as not enough will drop during one pass to bring the dragon down.
Run to the end as if you were doing the fight normally, fight near the brazier until at least 2 of your DPS have 4 Harpoons each (tanks and healers will be too busy to harpoon the dragon). Once you have farmed your harpoons, run back to Palehoof's room (dropping Earthbind/frost trap if you have them) once all the party is well in Palehoof's room the event will reset.
When starting the event for real, the tank grabs everything in the gauntlet and runs it up to the brazier at the end, picking up the pack there, then holding all the mobs and picking up new ones spawning in the doorway. DPS do light AoE and watch for the dragon getting ready to make a pass. The 2 harpooners should be between the left and right harpoon guns, and the middle gun, ready before you get the Blizzard raid warning, to prevent being netted by the adds away from the guns.
Once the dragon is in range spam click your gun, and if it is on cool-down, click the middle gun (strafing slightly may be required to reach the gun). You will need to make five or six hits before the dragon moves off to bring it down.
Once Skadi is down the fight is pretty much as with normal mode, clean up the adds quickly and nuke the boss. Periodically Skadi picks a random secondry target to whirlwind towards, on heroic this whirlwind is fatal to all but plate classes, so people need to keep an eye on Skadis target and be ready to run away. Don't be afraid to use most of the hall to kite him down, but
enter either Palehoof's room, or the exit to the rest of the dungeon as this will cause a reset.
Getting this right will bag you
, and if your DPS is good enough
This boss does THE most overpowered whirlwind in the entire game. Also he does a poison DoT on 1 person, this does serious damage on heroic, it's like the rogue's poison on Illidari Council. Basically, have everyone stand at maximum range from the tank on this, so further down the hallway, and start running when he whirlwinds. You can bring melee, but they need to be REALLY careful they don't get killed by the whirlwind
My heroic group's strategy is as follows:
An ideal group is a pali or warrior tank, with as much aoe classes as you can cram in. Usually we do it with a druid healer, mage, hunter, and the fifth spot is up for grabs. Melee isn't so hot for this guy, but if your healer is good it'll be fine.
I (warrior tank) runs to about 3/4's of the way down and picks up the 8 or so mobs there, then aoe starts. Once those mobs are mostly dead I pick up the rest of the mobs at the top, making sure the group stays close to me so I can use my Imp. Shield Reflect on shadowbolts. Pick up the rest of the mobs and T-clap/shockwave, then dps the mobs. Once the dragon is down, its easy mode. Avoid the whirlwind and dps, then the boss dies pretty quickly. This boss is disarmable.
Found this boss to be completely retarded on heroic. can grab the 1st 8 or so in one pull just run straight through the boss and grab them as they come running down. once you get to the end, its impossible to hold aggro and aoe anything because you get netted every 5seconds and the mobs all run away to throw spears at you in every which direction. We finally managed to get the boss down, with about 5 adds still alive. and then the WW raped the group. lame.
I strongly suggest farming harpoons and resetting the event before giving it a real try on heroic.
The WW isnt random, it goes for last harpoon person.
Alright this is what my group did ( warrior DK Holy priest Boomkin and Shadow priest) On heroic we started the event, killed the first wave and ran into that room all the way at the end where it leads into the other room, and the frost stuff cant get you, even if your on left or right side. Now DPS the adds, and if you kill them fast enough like we did you are able to drink. We drank until we had enough Harpoons and then went out WTFPWNT him and just watched out for whirlwind and kited him back and forth till he died.
Tanks, you can taunt him during his whirlwind aoe. So if one or more of you rmates can't escape it, just hit your taunt and go where you want him to go.
: Farm Harpoons; Setup Positions
Start the event and stay back behind the first set of pillars - you should be beyond the range of his ice breath attack. Stay here and farm
off of the
until the party has at least five. One will arrive in every even numbered wave.
After getting five or more
, run back into the previous room to reset the encounter, and quickly run back out after the mobs despawn. Run all the way down the corridor to the harpoon guns and eat, drink, and be merry until the boss spawns again. Now, set the ranged party members on the edge of the corridor with the harpoon guns next to the railing, where they'll be out of harms way from the frost breath. The tank should stand in the doorway that the waves spawn out of.
: Kill Adds; Fire Harpoons
Once the group is ready, send one of your members (preferably one that has weak AoE potential) down to start the event from back side of the boss. Once the event starts, the tank should aggro all the mobs and DPS should AoE them down. Once the adds are down to a reasonable amount, fire off all the harpoons at the drake before he does his icy breath (note that the cooldown on the individual guns is short enough that you should only need two players on harpoon duty to take him down before he does his icy breath).
: Tank and Spank
The tank should pick up the boss quickly and DPS should finish off the adds then focus on the boss.
: He throws a poison-tipped spear at a random party member, which deals considerable damage.
: Every 20 seconds or so, he does a whirlwind that deals moderately high damage (8k with 22.5% reduction, ability in DB doesn't reflect this) every second and
follows a random party member with it
at what feels like 100% speed on Heroic.
Not a very melee friendly fight, thanks to the whirlwind. Ranged DPS is invaluable here.
Just so everyone knows, we realized that he fires two Poison Javelin things before he Whirlwinds. So on the second Javelin / Arrow thing, melee (aside from tank) might wanna start runnin'.
rogues, warriors and MM hunters disarm this boss and he won't cast whirlwind, something that makes this heroic boss one of the easiest in the game.We had an MM hunter cast chimaera shot on a scorpid sting spamm and voila, no whirlwind and just that easy javelin dispell festival.
Warriors, you can Disarm him.
Have to say I agree this boss is one of the hardest fights in heroics. As warrior tank I even grabbed every add in the gauntlet at once on a couple of occasions. But the combination of being netted, ranged adds not coming within tclap range and the frost on the ground (usually in a good spot to camp so u can tclap ranged adds) spelt death. Holding agggro was insane here even on attempts when we killed all the initial adds at once from the start. Usually by the time Skadi came down the group was in poor shape with either health or mana and quickly finished us off despite me kiting him and yo-yo taunting his whirlwind. This fight really is a nightmare on heroic even though some ppl say it is simple. (garbage)
This fight is relatively complicated but not difficult once learned.
When the fight begins, Skadi the Ruthless will mount his proto-drake and fly up into the air, beginning a gauntlet style event. Your party must work their way about 150yd up a hallway fighting 4-5 waves of 5-6 Frost Vrykul each.
While you are fighting through the gauntlet, Skadi will fly over on his drake and cast frostfire on the ground in long strips. Standing in the fire does ~3k a second.
Ymirjar Harpooners will drop harpoons that stick in the ground. Party members need to loot the harpoons along the way.
When you reach the end of the gauntlet, there are three harpoon guns mounted on the edge of the keep. Occasionally you will see the emote that "Skadi is in Range of the Harpoons" and a party member, who has a harpoon, needs to use the harpoon gun.
After 4-5 hits with harpoons, Skadi's drake will die and he will dismount. From this point on the adds stop spawning and it is essentially a tank and spank. He has an ability that does ~6k damage to the tank and stuns him for 2 seconds. Skadi will also occasionally cast whirlwind, which hits for ~2k, and target a random party member. The targeted party member must kite the boss away from the rest of party to reduce overall damage taken.
Easy tactic to deal with this boss.
Step 1: Agro the guanlet event.
Step 2: Run back into the 5animal boss room
Step 3. Get a hunter/warlock to use their pet/eye of killrog to check out the event.
step 4: Once the event despawns (it will cos your grp izzint there) RUN all the way to the safe room.
Step 5: Once at the safe room wait for the boss to reappear at the start of the guanlet
Step 6: Get a hunter/rogue to agro the boss and sprint back to the safe room
Step 7: AOE the insane number of mobs spawned.
Step 8: Pick up Harpoons and deal with the boss as usual.
Been doing it this method on heroic with a grp of 2hunters 1 Mage 1 warrior tank, 1 druid healer.
-Tips bring alot of AoEing classes,
-Bring at least 1 hunter for the aspect of the pack so u can move faster when the boss has despawned
Hope this has helped someone.
If you have trouble dodging the deep breaths that Skadi's Dragon, Grauf, does,
have someone make a pair of /rw macros
that declare the safe sides or the unsafe side (I personally declare the safe sides). Though anyone can make and use these macros, it helps to have a dps, a ranged dps especially, as they are less preoccupied than the tank or healer, to make and use these macros.
Ever since I made these /rw macros, I have seldom seen a wipe on the Gauntlet phase.
Tip for resto shamans on heroic.. dont use earth shield when running the gauntlet. If it ticks right after the magic users/ranged spawn they aggro straight to you which makes things alot tougher on the tank than it needs to be considering it's pretty easy to heal without it.
The best way to kill this guy if your having trouble is the "Reset Trick"
So here goes, 4 of your group members stand in Palehoof's room, whilst one runs out and aggro's Skadi causing him to fly off, the one member that left the room then runs back into Palehoof's room, after all waiting in here for 10 seconds or so run back out to where Skadi should be, you will notice there are no mobs, all 5 group members should then run to the harpoon guns and enter the small space inside the building where the mobs start spawning, once here have 1 Dps run back outside and SKadi should have respawned and be stood at the end again with his proto-drake, have the 1 dps go and aggro him again, at this point EVERY mob that should spawn when he flies away will appear in this room, so the tank has to pick up 40 or so mobs, if your tank and healer are good enough his should be no problem though, AOE these down and collect the harpoons, having 1 dps assigned to harpooner, the rest of the group all stay in there until Skadi has landed as you also cannot be hit by the ice breath if you are far enough inside, once Skadi lands kill him like any other boss, and one more tip, when he is whirlwinding towards a group member that is not your tank, the tank can taunt him and e will begin to WW towards the tank instead which is useful if the ank is at range as the WW duration will usually be over by the time he reaches the tank.
Enjoy killing Skadi the ruthless the easy way.
Advice on normal for a first timer group (and the non-godly geared):
Skadi is the most dangerous boss in this instance, but with a little strategy he can be downed no problem. The most dangerous element of this whole fight is definitely the whirlwind, but the tank can strand the boss in between players with a little positioning.
We never tried the resetting approach to get everyone down at the end, but it sounds pretty doable. On normal, though, the trash mobs and the ice breath hit for very little damage, so you should have no problem gathering a few harpoons and clearing toward the end.
When your party is at the far end of the gauntlet by the harpoon guns (can't do anything with the harpoons until you're at the end of the long hallway by the guns), finish up the remaining mobs and top up on rage. As soon as you shoot down the dragon, ALL other members of the party should streak down the hallway to max healing range. Getting some distance from the boss is critical here. The first time we fought him, we had 2 other melee characters (rogue and ret pally) and made the mistake of staying in range of the boss.
Skadi will land and tank can pick up aggro. Ranged DPS can start pouring it on from max distance, but be ready to run away if necessary. Very quickly after beginning the fight, he'll cast a long whirlwind that'll cream anything other than plate wearers with lots of avoidance. We lost our ret pally, rogue, and hunter in about 3 seconds the first time we fought this guy. He appears to target squishy members of the party or perhaps the furtherest from himself, as he moved down the hallway each time.
So, here's the tactic that works best. Extra melee characters should just avoid the first part of this battle and retreat to range. Tank can pick up initial aggro and begin building threat and rage. When he starts his whirlwind he will most likely begin moving down the hallway to the rest of the party. Tank can wait a couple of seconds and then taunt him to bring him back toward himself. This will "strand" Skadi's attack in between the members of the party and most of it will be wasted. And other members of the group can restart dps and melee can return to start whacking him.
For the next whirlwind, your melee dps won't be safely removed from Skadi, so use your disarm skill at this point. If you can disarm him quickly enough you may be able to save your melee dps from a quick and nasty death, but we downed him successfully with just the tank, a mage, and our healer. For the third whirlwind, I burned my shield wall and be ready to pop last stand if needed. He only got off three whirlwinds with us, but on the fourth your disarm might very well be back up.
Clearly this dungeon is much easier with ranged dps. If the party can stay at max range the entire time, then an easy kill method is just to taunt him back and forth between your range and the tank, letting him exhaust his whirlwind in the no man's land in between. Good luck!
I don’t know was that a bug or something.
Yesterday we went through this boss. Didn’t have proper correct team. (a lot of melee dps) but managed to get harpoons and bring the boss down and get him all the way down to 1%. Last (alive) players were healer and tank and all of a sudden during the fight boss disappeared for about a minute.
Doors for the last boss didn’t open and after few second events was reset.
None of us got out of the room or the location. Simply remain of the team was corps watching the fight....
Is there any time limit with this event or something I missed?
Good point Robm. Was running heroic UP all the way up to this guy, and everytime the tank AND healer died, the entire gauntlet would reset...Even if the DPS lived, it would still reset. This must be a bug or a glitch. Can anyone confirm?
Warriors can not disarm this boss. Ive tried 6 times today alone and every time the disarm cooldown does not start and a message comes up on my screen saying invalid target same as every other non disarmable mob in the game. the rogue in your group is probably dismantling. or maybe wow just hates me and the other 2 tanks in my guild who also cannot disarm him.
This guy is so bugged right now it's not even funny...
Agreed. Tried everything in the book we could think of. Positioning, methods of encroachment - everything. It was completely random every time. Some times he would despawn after killing one mob, other times he would despawn after we got him down....
GO GO Hotfixes!
Latest patch causes him to reset every single time my group gets through the gauntlet to the harpoon launchers
After many unsuccesful tries, we managed to take him out at last. Once you beat him the first time and u learn the tactics, he isn´t that hard. Just make sure u got enough dps and aoe.
So here is what we did in heroic mode. At entering the romm where skadi and his dragon is, the encounter starts and Skadi flies away. Just stay put, and take out the two first adds several times until u have enough spears. We always take 8, dont know if thats to much or what. Make sure only 1 dps takes the spears and shoots. When u have 8, run back out and wait for the encounter to reset, then run back in fast and all the way down towards the last room, where the real encounter with Skadi will be. WHen buffed up, choose one fast dps to run back towards the start of the encounter, where Skadi has respawned. And when the encounter starts once more, run back fast. Make sure your tank is in the last room to make instant aoe (thunderclap and Shockwave) to get aggro from adds. Then nuke them. Make sure to take spears, just in case u wipe. At that way u wont have to get that many spears in a new attempt. The dps that have the spears should be ready to fire spears at the dragon when the screen tells u to. Party, make sure not to stand outside when the dragon fires its ice. That hurts. Go inside room when he does so. Once the dragon is dead, Skadi comes down. Tank should get aggro at once, or else u got a great chance of wipe. When the fight is on, be very much weary of the whirlvind which hurts. All other in party but the tank will probably wipe if he hits u with it. He is tauntable (yes) which makes it easier. Tank should also tri to get Skadi away from the party. Use all u can of your dodge, parry, defence etc. stuff u have when he whirlvinds. Good luck
My group was able to get him not to reset. This is what we did: (this was on normal mode but hopefully will work on heroic as well)
we ran it through and realized the problem with the reseting, so we used those resets to gather 1-2 harpoons each, so we had 6 just in case so we could bring him down in his first fly by.
We then pulled him again when he reset, and I (Hunter) left my pet on stay right where he would normally be standing before he gets onto his mount. We ran the gauntlet like normal (very quickly though so we could reach the end by his first fly by. (Note: we did not start it from behind him, but it may not make any difference)
We got about 3/4ths the way up the run and my pet despawned due to being too far away from me. We sprinted to the harpoon launchers and launched them the second he was in range. He dropped off his mount and we downed him.
Please let me know if other people get this to work or not. I'd like to be able to tell people what it is exactly that would get it to work properly so everyone isn't spending hours trying to figure it out.
I hope this helps!
Poison Spear: He throws a poison-tipped spear at a random party member, which deals considerable damage.
I've noticed that as a tank, I've never gotten hit by this ability. Never.
Also, he will never
until he casts at least 2
, so you can keep count.
yeah this fight didnt bug for us, tanks and any melee capable of disarming, disarm him as much as possible
The latest hotfixes seems to have fixed the 'bugging' problem. Skadi's back to normal.
Killed him with 3 people (in heroic of course). Paladin retrib, DK tank, Priest heal.
It was a pug but a solid one. Our stuff was blue naxx10 thoo. So not that maxed out.
I'm farming the mount since 2 weeks now. And I wanted to increase my chances so now I'm gonna run it every day, with a group of 3 hopefully with the guys of today.
A few info I gathered on the run. We skipped EVERY single boss, especially the girl speaking with Arthas, we just took the Hulk killed him, and there was no door so we could continue, and the boss didnt come to aggro us.
The Second boss is also optionnal as you have to "summon" him.
So you can just rush Skadi...
Instead of having one chance out of 500, you have 1/300.
Thanks Blizzard for this wonderfull design. They knew people would farm it so they made sure, all bosses were optionnal except this boss!
If you skip all bosses and stop at skadi, it goes as fast as building a comon 5 people group!
I'm looking forward to T8 gear to maybe reduce to 2 people.
Also note that it's mostly all Undead, so Paladin, Dk lichborn rune, etc all helps...
I just found this out last night. Basically if your heals and tank is good you can try this:
Everyone wait inside the trophy room while the one party member starts the event.. (preferably a rogue since they can run back to trophy room fast.) When the mobs start coming the one party member who started the event can run back into the trophy room wait about 10 seconds then the whole group can run all the way to the end in a mobless gauntlet. ( The event is in the process of resetting). The gate at the end to the next room is still closed but if you look behind you skadi is reset and standing in the beginning of the gauntlet. All that is left is to aggroe him. and to tank the mobs coming out of the door as you will already be at the door when they all come out. It helps out the tank and heals alot as all the mobs are in one place. GL
On heroic he actually isn't hard at all .
Just that amongst all the easier heroics , he is the first / only idiot check you'll find . 8/10 of times you run this on heroic there is always someone who does one of the following :
1) You tell them constantly not to stand in icy breaths . They continue standing there.
2) You have someone designated to pick up the harpoons and shoot them . Some other idiot takes the harpoons constantly and does not tell anyone about it.
3) You constantly spam " don't stand in whirlwind / move around " before the encounter and when boss lands . Some smartass doesn't listen and continues dpsing / tanking and ends up dying .
From my personal experience the best way to deal with this guy is either with a paladin tank with a good amount of aoe for the beginning or a warrior and an unholy deathknight to get adds in the beginning because from my experience as a prot warrior it's annyoing as hell getting the adds off of the healer and with the unholy dk's aoe moves you can be certain they will attack the DK over the healer first which means success in the fight.
Not sure why the
Blue Proto Drake
isnt on his loot table here. Saw it drop on my last run, lost the roll, qq.
Its there now, maybe noone got it before.
I did it like this:
First, Rogue triggered Skadi, running back to the prev boss room. Waiting till he was gone.
Than we ran past him, making Mage trigger him, we got Overun by mobs(Divine Protection helped allot!).
Also, I made macro's to go left and right:
We got trough the mobs and killed Grauf(His dragon).
When he got up the platform and attacks us, the Warlock and Priest ran towards where Skadi is before the fight. Making sure that the dont get damaged by him attacks(At least, as much as possible).
When Skadi used Whirlwind. The Death Knight and Rogue ran towards the Magic DPS and Healer. making him attacking me(With taunts).
And that how we done it.
So for every1 els.
When grauf is down:
Stay on Skadi the Ruthless
, taunting him when he does WW. EDIT: Also taunt him when hes done with WW. Just to be sure.
Dont worry, the tank will keep him away from you :) Atleast, if you dont have a wannabe tank. Remember, try to heal the tank as much as possible. DPS might save themselves by running away from WW. ALSO, cure the poisons from the Poisoned spear.
Dont worry, the tank will keep him away from you :) Atleast, if you dont have a wannabe tank.
Dont worry, the tank will keep him away from you :) Atleast, if you dont have a wannabe tank.
Melee DPS: Stay on Skadi. But when he does WW, Run towards the Magic DPS(es) and Healer.
This should do it.
Attacks and abilities
Crush - Deals about 10k physical damage to the target.
Poisoned Spear - applies a dot that does several thousand damage per tick.
Whirlwind - standard whirlwind ability, doing 6-7k on plate, capable of moving while using
*Skadi the Ruthless can be disarmed on Heroic Mode*
This fight is relatively complicated but not difficult once learned.
When the fight begins, Skadi the Ruthless will mount his proto-drake and fly up into the air, beginning a gauntlet style event. Your party must work their way about 150yd up a hallway fighting 4-5 waves of 5-6 Frost Vrykul each.
While you are fighting through the gauntlet, Skadi will fly over on his drake and cast frostfire on the ground in long strips. Standing in the fire does ~3k a second. It is useful to have a member of the party aware of Skadi's movement so that you can predict and call which side of the hall his breath will be cast on.
An effective strategy is to assign a single player to collect the harpoons and fire them at Skadi. Several harpoons can be fired in one pass if the player is fast. Additionally, if the group wipes unused harpoons will remain in a player's inventory, allowing you to have a full stack by the time you reach the end of the gauntlet on subsequent attempts.
After 4 hits with harpoons (6 Heroic), Skadi's drake will die and he will dismount. When he lands the tank must quickly establish agro otherwise Skadi may immediately kill vulnerable group members. It is handy if hunters use misdirection (and rogues use tricks of the trade)on the tank in anticipation of this and begin dpsing immediately. From this point on the adds stop spawning and it is essentially a tank and spank. He has an ability that does ~6k damage to the tank and stuns him for 2 seconds. Skadi will also occasionally cast whirlwind, which hits for ~2k, and target a random party member (Warriors use disarm even on Heroic). The targeted party member must kite the boss away from the rest of party to reduce overall damage taken (Warriors should taunt while kiting backwards, this will pull the boss towards them during his whirlwind). Skadi will also occasionally throw a poisoned spear which will hit for around 6k and then DoT for around 2k every 3 seconds, healers must be fast to react to this as an already weakened player will die quickly from it.
It should also be noted that as of Patch 3.0.8 this boss encounter is bugged. When the last of the adds is killed he will immediately despawn, even if he's already down and fighting. Groups must ensure that at least one add is kept alive until the end of the fight, otherwise they will have no choice but to reset and start again.
Easiest way to do it
The gauntlet resets if everyone runs into the previous room so to make it easier, have four people stand in the previous room and let one person go in and start the event. Stay inside the doorway and kill Ymirjar Harpooners (usually 2 adds at a time come into the doorway) until you gather the harpoons (6 Heroic) and once you have gathered the harpoons; go back into the previous room and the boss will despawn, once he despaws the group runs to the end of the hallway. One person will head back to the boss and start the event. Kill the mobs, pay close attention to the "Witch Doctors" as they cast mostly at healers, prefer to kill them as they spawn. Once you have downed the majority of the mobs, during the next boss pass have the person carrying the harpoons shoot the boss down. Then begin to clear remaining adds and then the boss.
Do not** rush to the Harpoon end and gather in the doorway (too far into the door causes reset) as previously strategies mentioned, it will despawn the boss in the middle of the fight.(not good)...
but where is he founding
Just learned on Heroic you can fire multiple shots in one sweep if you have two ppl firing. Thought that was good info to share.
Tip for melee DPS: Stand at Skadi's sides when you DPS, so that when he WWs, all you have to do is strafe left/right to get away from him. Mouse turning is the most effective way to avoid him if you choose to stand behind him, but if you don't like that, strafing works just as well.
As the tank, I use 2 /rw (raid warnings) to alert my team which side is safe:
/rw MOVE LEFT
/rw MOVE RIGHT
I have these bound to 1 and 2 for easy access.
I was in a group that just tried him on heroic. WE could not beat him tried 3 times. We had a great tank, maybe we just had bad luck. Once he even had his frost aoe on both sides at the same time, we had no safe spot.
I believe they may have fixed the way of bugging this fight, we tried 4 times we got down killed all the mobs in the doorway and went into the room and collected spears and everytime we got him down he would just disappear mid whirlwind. Has anyone else had this problem? Is really annoying.
Timed achievement with a Paladin Tank
Now i have to admit, the first time i stumbled across this tactic was by accident, and i got the achievement without initially setting out to do so. The first time i did it the event bugged and reset by accident while we were by the far end, and i honestly didnt know what to expect. But here is how to do it:
As with most attempts, you will want to farm harpoons. Just keep on plowing through the waves at a steady pace, and make sure the dps classes have plenty of javelins each. Then, as with the usual methods, make your way back to the previous room to reset the event.
As soon as you see the mobs despawn,
have the entire team run down to the far end by the harpoons,
Skadi and his drake have reappeared. This is important, you
want to have the mobs come straight away.
Now this is the different part, which will ONLY work with a pally tank. Position yourself just in front of the doorway, and make sure the team is fully buffed and ready. Have the dps with the lowest AoE ability then run back down towards skadi. Start laying down
, and make sure you have
up. When skadi is triggered
30 or so mobs will spawn on top of you, hit
. After a second or 2 the dps then AoE them down asap, popping
to halve all damage taken is a good idea. Doing this should take only a few seconds, leaving you with the maximum amount of time to take down skadi.
As i said, this is only really doable with a prot pally as the other tank classes cannot be sure to gather full aggro on 30 or so mobs at once. DK tanks may be able to attempt this because like
death and decay

, which is the deciding factor here, but the AoE stun makes a pally the most reliable choice.
Hope this helps all those looking to do this achievement :)
Skadi's WW can easely be outrun. I you happen to have a warrior in the group, just disarm him.(only on HC)
Oh and if you are a druid healer and he targets you with his WW, if you have a few hot on yourself in advance, you won't die.
Seems like he wields a much lighter version of

Ok i just want to say that the blizz team messed up again. If anyone wants to know who Skadi is then here is a little about The Goddess Skadi.
A giantess, called the 'snow-shoe goddess', and the embodiment of winter. She is the wife of the god Njord. When her father Thiazi was slain by the gods, Skadi wanted to take revenge. The gods thought it wiser to reconciliate and offered her a marriage with one of them. She was free to marry any god, but while she made her choice she was only allowed to see the feet of the potential candidates. She noticed a very elegant pair and, convinced that their owner was the fair god Balder, she choose them. Unfortunately for her, those feet belonged to the older god Njord.
The marriage between Njord and Skadi was not a happy one. She wanted to live where her father had lived, in Thrymheim in the mountains, and Njord wanted to live in Noatun, his palace by the sea. So they agreed to spend the first nine days in the mountains and the following nine days by the sea. This arrangement did not work out very well, and they separated. Eventually, Skadi left Njord for the god Ull.
Anyone know who did the voices for this guy?
I killed him and he dropped he drake, and I won it :D. I was just wondering if anybody else has, cause it seemed pretty rare, first time I've ever seen it drop. I've killed him 6 times, so I just thought it was rare.
there needs to be an achievement for this guy.
"defeat UP with no wipes on heroic difficulty"
Heroic version of this boss and the stuff before it can be quite easily 2-manned as retri paladin/resto shaman in naxx25 gear. Just watch out for Crush (or spam heals throughout).
Turn down your particle density if you, like me, drop from 60fps to 4fps when he does his icy ground effect. It seems Blizzard decided to use individual particles for the
layer of ice, instead of one solid texture; this causes a heavy load on even the hardiest of computers.
did they take blue proto-drake out of the loot?
When you walk up to him, he mounts his proto drake. He flies away from your sight and spawns adds that will attack your group. Notice that some of them are harpoonists, and on death they pickable harpoons when they die.
You must pick the Harpoons to dismount Skadi.
Skadi will control his proto drake back into your reach, and he will be hittable by the harpoon guns at the end of the hallway. he is only in range a short moment before he flies in range of the hallway and makes his proto drake breathe a cone of frost that will cover a large area of the floor, standing in it will result in death after not long.
When he is in range, fire your harpoons with the harpoon guns.
Do this, fight his adds, avoid the frost breath and soon his drake dies, forcing him to touch ground once again.
Once he has landed he starts fighting you. He will also use a whirlwind during the fight, killing the dpses and healers that gets too close, avoid him whenever he does this.
If you follow these tips, you will clear him easily
Could some really really nice dude post the sounds of this guy? I really would like them, please do not purge this comment.
Seems like he wields a much lighter version of Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros.
Lovely how he wields an Item that has the same model as a Fire hammer, being the god of Hunting and Winter =P
He actually wields the
But yeah like you said being Frost it's kinda weird him having a fire based weapon but whatever!
Just wanted to ask: we saw very strange bug (or something) while fighting Skadi on heroic difficulty. We did standart things - even not tried to do any achievements - just aggro boss, then walking on the passage to the harpoon cannons, fired harpoons, dismount Skadi and fight him just near cannons, sometimes walking away from his whirlwind . And during this fight he several times became at full xp. Two or three times. Every our fight. Without any reason. Dps - dps - dps - boss have full xp, dps - dps - full xp again. So we couldn't kill him because of it. I don't see any heal abilities of this boss and maybe somebody can explain what it was ? It's not reset, because when he resets he stay with his drake in the beginning of passage. Did anybody see this bug ?
In patch 3.3 PTR,he is currently bugged. The event will happen normaly until Grauf uses his breath. He will Use his breath but remain hovering above the harpoon launchers, makign him unhittable while mobs keep spawning.
Does he still drop the
Blue Proto-Drake? It is not listed among his loots..
has anyone noticed the joke blizzard made when skadi says "look alive, my brothers..."?
all the guys he summons are zombies.
He also drops another drake on Heroic. I can't remember which one to save my life but i think it was blue...might be wrong, I didn't win the roll as always :P but the fact remains one DEFFINATLY droped last night.
You can get *Grauf reins as a drop from Skadi in heroic mode.
* Grauf being the dragon Skadi is riding
Not much reason to do so except if you really like a challenge during children's week ... but found out he is solo-able as a Prot Paladin. I don't have the best Prot gear or spec (mine is a PVP spec), but it's doable. Just wait to fire off all your harpoons until you've healed up and have good mana. I had to do a few extra spawns of adds to get the right combination.
Typical Prot DPS setup, Corruption, Sanctuary, nothing too fancy. Regular mode.
I'm sure a couple of other classes might have an easier time.
Having rocket boots helps ... run completely away during his whirlwind. Use the time to heal up.
I just soloed him no mount tho.. :(
A video i made to show how.
edit: (On my DK alt, my druid would fail at this)
Can be soloed as well geared Frost mage.
Been farming him everyday for Proto Drake.
How to get to him.
- Try to CC few trash pack at the start and slowly kill 1 by 1 w/o using CD. Make sure to counterspell the caster since they do tons of dmg and heal. (I sheeped the healer and burned the melee asap)
- Skip Svala Sorrowgrave while she's RPing. (With Invisibility Glyph) Invisible as soon as u aggro the Abom that blocks your path and skip through all the undead trashes up to Gortok Palehoof's room
-Use your Mirror image and Icy veins to clear the trash at Gortok Palehoof's room due to they aren't sheepable.
- After you clear last pack of trash, it's time to face Skadi the Ruthless.
How to solo him.
- Don't worry about your mirror image cooldown, u won't be pulling the boss anytime soon.
- Start the event, then slowly move forward. Don't aggro too many. They have fairly low HP so you can take 3~4 at once.
- Be more aggressive on killing due to constant respawn.
- Once you reach the Harpoon, shoot the first 2
- Now here's tricky part. You can easily kill off 2 adds that spawns every 20 sec. focus the boss and if boss is above 35%, shoot the harpoon, if not, keep killing the add. Skadi does heal fairly fast so keep picking up the harpoon.
- Once all your cooldown is up, full mana hp (you can drink inbetween adds) You are ready to pull.
- Every EVEN trash wave, you'll notice you can shoot the boss down w/o extra add spawn. so make sure you know which wave of add you want to shoot the boss down. It's extremely important that u keep the boss's HP below 33% so you can pull him down within 1 harpoon. (Hardest part is the pull. You have to know when to pull him down w/o any adds.)
- Once you pulled him down, Mirror image ASAP and Blink down.
- Burn him down as much as you can. Don't worry about bladestorm, he'll start chase you down with bladestorm but it'll run out before it reaches you. (you might get hit or 2 but your IB will absorb most of dmg)
- Due to mirror image, he will attack your water elemental. (for the duration of MI) but you should be able to keep your WE alive with Permafrost talent. No biggie if WE goes down, you can resummon right away.
- You should aim for around 15~20% of Boss's HP when MI goes away. Make sure you are at MAX distance from your WE. When MI goes away, he will go after you. You going to have ICE BLOCK when he gets to you. Stay ice Blocked until he bladestorms. Since he bladestorms 2nd highest threat, he'll go after your water elemental which is far away from you.
- Get out of ice block and finish him off. You should have good 10~15 sec of free casting w/o taking any damage which is enough to finish the boss off.
*If you can't get him down to 20~% during your MI, you might be little undergeared.
GL~ and have fun soloing!
Druids can easily solo Skadi the Ruthless.
Bring a bear spec, wearing kitty gear; T10 makes it a walk in the park. I used entirely cat gear save 2 tank trinkets; Glyph of Indomitability and Corroded Skeleton Key.
Pre-hot yourself with Regrowth & Rejuv to absorb some of the initial damage, then dash in in cat form. As you're about to reach the first wave, pop Thorns, go bear and hit Berserk. Spam mangle/maul, and Swipe when it's up, and burn the first wave down.
After that, it's a game of managing the adds until you've both gained enough harpoons, healed yourself up and have a clear field to knock Skadi out of the sky.
The casters are the primary danger, and should be your first targets.
The harpooners are second, because obviously they drop the harpoons, but also because they'll net you, and are annoying.
Kill the warriors when the rest are down.
When you have a chance, heal yourself to full and once you've finished clearing off the field, knock Skadi out of the sky. Enter Phase 2.
Once Skadi is on the ground, do whatever you need to finish off the remaining adds, especially a caster. Don't be afraid to shift back to bear to break out of a net here - remaining stationary is more dangerous than losing your rage, even with adds up.
Once the adds are dead, proceed to finish Skadi off.
In T10 gear, even cat gear, with a bear spec and mastery post-4.0.3, his poison isn't strong enough to warrant much worry. You'll need to heal from it, yes, but you'll actually be given ample opportunity from...
When he whirlwinds, just run the hell away from him, far enough to shift out and Rejuv + lifebloom stack yourself. In T10 cat gear, I *never* needed to use a casting-time heal on myself fighting Skadi. Whirlwind is your healing time.
However, when he first begins it, pop your defensve stuff: Skelly key, Barkskin, whatever. This will minimize the damage taken before you outdistance him, reducing the amount of healing you need to fully recover.
Once the adds are dead, honestly, it's difficult to get down past half health and be in a bad spot. Skadi is slow and steady, and very predictable himself.
So easy to solo at 85 as a hunter that I feel like a tool for posting tips that are probably horrendously obvious. No special spec or gear needed. I've done this in a horrible BM spec while BM was literally the worst raid dps spec in the game, though I found it easier as Survival. I used whatever Tenacity pet I happen to have on hand, even as low-level as 83.
There are just a couple of things you want to think of to make it easy on yourself:
-You can Camouflage past literally all the trash, although you'll need to dismiss your pet to get around the middle pack in the first outdoor hallway.
-In Skadi's gauntlet, make a conscious effort to push forward and pull extra rather than resolving to pull that next pack after these two runners die. Especially with the underleveled pet's slightly lower dps, I found myself getting bogged down--I wasn't necessarily falling behind, but I wasn't pushing ahead at all either. This isn't a problem at higher gear levels.
-Get Skadi dismounted as soon as you can in order to stop the flow of trash, but kill whatever trash is left before you start working on Skadi. Those warriors and witch doctors are rather hard on your pet. When I tried to ignore them and focus on Skadi, my pet ended up dying despite having Mend Pet up full-time.
-Feign and/or Disengage and run during Skadi's whirlwind. He might still whittle your health down with Poison Spear, but you should be perfectly fine.
-This should be insanely obvious, but even I blanked out at one point and did this when I forgot to MD a pull and decided "derp try again"... don't Feign during the gauntlet unless your pet has aggro on something. You'll end the event. You'll also end the event if, during phase 2, another pair of trash mobs run out at you and you feign before they have aggro on anything.
Good luck with the mount farming! :D
Very easy solo as a 85 Blood Death Knight in DPS gear. Dropped the mount first kill.
I wasn't successful but as a shadow priest I did get him to about 50%. With better add management I probably could've done better. He hits about
critical against non-glyphed Inner Fire 85 priests in half normal, half heroic blues. When you kill the patrol adds that run the gauntlet, you leave combat and can take a drink. Unfortunately you shouldn't let any go past you because when they reach the end they will aggro you and return, possibly setting you back. Luckily they die very quickly. Hamstring is probably the worst part about this fight, as it was up almost 90% of the time I was designated as in-combat. I foolishly started the ground phase while having let two adds go down the gauntlet. They came back and hamstringed me and pretty much ensured my demise. Shadowfiend + Fade is amazing, as he barely touches the thing, unlike most Cataclysm monsters. Mind Soothe works for many of the Valkyr. Undead packs would be fairly easy to avoid were it not for wolves. Shackle one, get dots on wolves, and Mind spike spam the unshackled to get it out of the fight.
Managed to solo him today as a lvl 85 blood elf Shadow Priest, in the normal PvE dps spec. My average item level in Shadow is 339 and I managed to do it. The trick is just to take it easy up to the harpoon cannons, not taking more than 4 adds at once. I was only using vampiric touch on the adds, because this one has the lowest mana cost and ticks for the most damage. Once I got all adds down, I ate food and had a drink to restore my mana and health almost completely, then took down the last 2 adds quickly before shooting Skadi down. If you get 2 adds to spawn right before Skadi comes down it will be really hard to solo him. Once he's down DoT him up, pop Shadowfiend and Dark Archangel if these are off cooldown and nuke him. When he does his whirlwind quickly swap to Inner Will and pop a Renew and perhaps a few Flash Heals on yourself. After this it gets quite hard because your shadow damage won't heal you through his damage. I ended up having him down to 40k health and my DoTs had run out, but he was hitting me really hard. I was lucky he did another whirlwind so i could run away, HoT myself and DoT him so he died. Good luck soloing and farming for the mount!
This boss is obviously a pushover for any level 85 tank with some decent gear.
I used Seal of Insight for some healing but in hindsight it might have been faster to just go with Truth for better dps.
The best thing about farming this guy is that you don't have to kill the two bosses before him so getting to him is very fast.
Pretty easy to solo as a lvl 85 hunter in ilvl 333 gear. BM may be more ideal spec, but I just used my MM grinding spec with no issues.
- You can Camo straight to the boss and do not have to kill anything until you get to the gauntlet.
- I used a Turtle with full tanking talents and Shell Shield for damage mitigation. Hit with Mend Pet as needed and it's no problem keeping him up even not being BM.
- Points in Spirit Bond, Bombardment and Rapid Recuperation are really nice for the trash waves. Keeps your pet healthy, you can spam multi-shot and every time you kill a mob you gain back focus and you're rarely focus starved.
- I tried not to take on more than 4 or 5 trash mobs at a time and would basically MD to the pet and Multi-shot away. Glyph of MD is nice as you can constantly MD to your pet when new waves come and pelt the new arrivals with Multi-shot to get them on your pet and off of you.
- The only tricky part was getting Skadi on the ground with some trash left. Take care of trash first and MD boss to pet ASAP. Whrilwind is easy to avoid, I just kited him down the hall and it wasn't bad on the pet. Poisoned Spear is nothing.
Solo'd as an 85 Balance Druid in ilvl 338 gear. It was not too difficult, just make sure you don't pull too many adds at once. Skadi himself doesn't hit -too- hard, just cleanse the poison he puts on you and make sure to sprint away from the whirlwind as fast as you can. I was a bit slow and had to heal, but it was not too bad. Just keep rejuv/lifebloom stacks on you at all times and you should be fine. ^^ By the time your mana gets too low he should be about dead!
Save your innervate for when Skadi comes down in case you need to heal up. The adds don't hit very hard at all; I maybe had to rejuv/lifebloom myself once or twice when I pulled 4-5.
Soloed as level 84 demonology warlock. My gear is very meh, I'm guessing at 85 and with some decent gear it'll be rather easy.
I have 2 points in Improved Health Funnel because otherwise I wouldn't know how to keep my pet alive in fight like this, but if you are doing this at level 85 & geared that talent might be obsolete here.
Actually I was going to write a wall of text about my strategy, but thinking about it... the gauntlet adds are easy (though annoying) aoe trash, and Skadi himself is almost a standard pet tanking fight. Curse of weakness helps, Infernal or Doomguard summon helps, teleport circle or Metamorphosis + Demon Leap help for escaping from the whirlwind (or just out-run it). My felguard usually survives the whirlwind attack (though close) if his health was full or close to full before the whirlwind. So keep him up as good as possible, watch your threat, and don't stand in the whirlwind. That's it actually.
can be solo'd by a 85 fury warrior, in case anyone wants to farm the drake
Just solo'd as demo lock with no issues. Used my felguard and had to soulburn to bring him back after one death...my health never went below 50%. Avg ilv gear is 352. Just take it slow with the trash mobs along the way and you'll have no problems. No proto though...
Easily soloable as enhance shaman. I had 345 ilvl when I tried it.
For the dungeon trash up until the boss that you can't pass by without aggroing it's safest to hex the healer mobs or a wolf depending on what group you are facing. If there were more then 3 mobs I would use my wolves just to be safe.
At the boss encounter it is important to remember that you don't need to rush yourself and take too many mobs at a time. They go down quite quickly and using a bit of aoe from Magma Totem and Fire Nova will help with the big groups. Wait until all the mobs are dead and your cool downs are ready before calling the boss down.
When battling Skadi I popped wolves, trinkets, bloodlust and my rock elemental at the start. Heal yourself on Maelstrom Weapon 5 stacks. When he does whirlwind the first time your wolves should still be out. Have them taunt. You should be able to stand in the ww with the wolves healing you. If you are taking to much damage just move away as he will be after the wolves and not you. If he does a second whirlwind use your Shamanistic Rage to help reduce the damage you take. I also needed to heal myself in ww while running away with Spiritwalker's Grace.
soloed with 85 level beast mastery Hunter with PvP gear video in
YouTube 720p HD
Could anyone please confirm that the Reins still drop as of 4.0.3 please?
I'm doing this every day and want to know if its a waste of time or not. =)
Soloed as Shadowpriest, 348 ilvl gear, it's not hard at all just be carefull of not pulling to much thats all. Took about 10 mins in total from start till boss dead.
soloed with assasination rouge hard fight need some drinks and buff food took me some tryes but it can be done np . no drake:(
lvl 85 itl 354
Confirming lucky drop yesterday. Solo'd as enhance shaman easily (351 gear) and quite enjoyable.
I've just done him on my Lvl 85 Assassination Rogue. iLvl 349.
The hardest part was managing the adds properly. I didn't die but I had to reset the fight a few times with Vanish. This is how I finally beat him:
First I collected 3 spears and then reset.
Started the event again and stealth sprinted to FoK as many adds as possible with Evasion up. Went ahead and killed the rest while keeping Recuperate up. Moved into the room and ate up, killing adds as they spawned. Make sure all the adds are dead when you shoot Skadi down.
Skadi himself was a close fight but will be easy once I refine my CD management. My Evasion was still down so I poped Combat Readiness, Disarmed him, started S&D and put Rupture on him. Sprinted away from his first WW. Poped Evasion once he was done and kept my rotation going. Cloaked the poison and ran away from his second WW. I was pretty low at that point so I kited him a bit to let the dots tick, then finished him off with a full energy bar.
Used 1 Rogue's Draught. Forgot to use Vendetta. Cookie Cutter PvE Assassination Spec. No Drake :(
aye, drake drop confirmed .....combat on adds and assassination on boss,Rogue - item lvl 344 ( even had a green)....had all sorts of buffs ( pala, priest ,druid ..food,elixir, potion ,healthstone etc etc) was left with more than 50% hp......was my first kill....gl
Managed to solo as an 85 Disc Priest with 334 gear. Rushed in and Holy Nova'd all the way to the harpoons. I mind Spiked the last few remaining since they'd get 3 shotted and I'd save mana. I picked up the 3 lances and slowly took down the next two adds. The trick to this was to shoot two harpoons at Grauf and leave him with one harpoon away of Skadi dismounting.
In between the two adds you are able to mana up since you are not in combat, so I'd kill the two adds. I healed/mana'd up with water and then shot Grauf when my HP/MP were at max.
I dotted Skadi and pretty much just DPSd him down very slow. Lots and lots of running, renewing, dotting again and when he whirwinds I'd run as far away as possible to heal up. Shadowfiend and fade to get a bit of breathing air. It was still a pain to kill but it takes a lot of patience.
You can eat and drink in the room with the spawns. In between spawns obviously. This way you can get to almost full health/mana before Skadi.
Makes soloing him trivial.
Solo'd as a i352 frost mage. Basically keep away from him and pop mirror image as soon as the fight starts with him on the ground. Should be able to get him to about 20% before they go away.
Good luck farming your mount!
Just solo'd on heroic as an iLevel 338 BM Hunter, Spirit Beast + Spirit Bond
Initially, ignore Skadi, burn down the adds. Collect harpoons as you go. Once you get to the end, you should be at a point where only two adds are spawning at once. When Skadi flies close to the harpoon guns, make sure the 2 adds are dead, and fire all three harpoons at once. Pet tanks, blow all CDs at this point (Rapid Fire, Bestial Wrath, trinkets, etc). When he whirlwinds, Disengage away. When he poisons you, have your Spirit Beast heal you. I finished this fight with 90% health.
No mount though ;x
Mages don't worry, it's easyil soloable even for you.
If you can't pull good dps in fire spec (minimum 17k), respect to arcane.
When the skadi's event starts, wait where skadi was before the event started. Mobs are gonna come to you in groups of two. kill them and also take care of mobs that are constantly spawning and running to you. You can eat food inbetween killing mobs to recover your mana and health.
Once you get 3 harpoons and all the stationary mobs are dead, go shoot harpunes at skadi. When he jumps down, immidiately use mirror image, and if they don't take aggro in 2 seconds use invisibility to lose aggro. As soon as skadi is on your mirror images, pop time warp, trinkets, arcane power, everything you have and just spamm arcane blast (i have 70k mana and i don't run out before he is dead). Just for the case have mana gem and maybe a mana potion ready.
My gear is nothing special (6k SP, 24% crit, 105k hp), 2 BoE epics and the rest is PvP.
Solo'd with my Blood Death Knight with ilevel 346.
Took my time with the trash, just one group at a time and skipped the first 2 bosses. My Blood Shield was at 89%, a Mastery rating of 1137 (14.34) which kept my HP from dipping below 90%.
Soloed as a Combat Rogue on Heroic mode with average of 344 ilevel gear (4 pieces of Bloodthirsty Gladiator gear).
Honestly, I was doubtful about my success because I am still in need of gear replacement, and I am just your average player. That said, I messed up the first time. Bad timing with bringing down Skadi because adds were spawning at the same time, and I messed up with his whirlwind.
After that, I realized I could stealth past several mobs of the gauntlet and they won't aggro during the encounter. With Blade Furry up for a bit and Recoup going, I had no problem staying alive. I brought him down without there being any adds around, ran from his first whirlwind and then burned him down.
Like most posts above, I too fought the adds in the building to avoid the aoe on the ground.
Didn't use any health pots or flasks. I did have a food buff which gave me extra hit of all things.
Just wanted to help anyone out who is an average player with a rogue. You CAN go in here and find it quite easy! :)
PS: Drake didn't drop. T_T
THE QUESTION THAT NEEDS ANSWERING
can you solo him (85 drood tank?)
not easy as shadow priest at all. i have ilvl 356 and i finally did it after few attempts, lucky for me it dropped in my 1st solo run.
and here is how i did it: keep shield up all the time, use VT on creeps and flay them, and use SWD on each cd to regain mana. No drinking and eating available during gauntlet, so don't count on it.
once you decide to pull him, use sf and fade, move away dot him, when sf or fade expire, start running to other side of tunnel spamming DP and SWD while running. Shield yourself, disperse if needed for mana. Once you are there wait for him to come, dot him, use Potion of swiftness and run to other side, he should be dead using that strategy. Kite him as much as you can!
Soloed just now as an Affliction Lock - average iLvl of 353.
I did not eat/drink in between spawns to make this easier, so it's doable without (although I'm sure much easier waiting a few spawns and healing up).
I basically used my dps pet for the guantlet and used a Demon Soul summon for my VW right as Skadi was jumping off the drake, and allowed the VW to tank it. Made the fight quite easy, and would have been even easier if I hadn't had a spawn at the same time as phase 2 starting.
Also I almost killed him for the speed kill (even though I already have the achievement).
Unfortunately, no mount drop for me, so this is something to add into my daily farming runs.
I got mine today after I've been farming it for around 3 weeks, Im so damn happy. I did this as a frost mage. I used blink at start to grab almost all the inc adds, AoE them down with pets freeze and then blizzard> easy cake. Looted the harpoons, shot him down and popped illus so I lost all threat ( illus tanked him, very useful), Time Warp to get him down a.s.a.p and I almost got an heart attack when I looted, there was the shiny blue proto drake.
And I would like to say to other farmers out there, DO NOT give up. I've NEVER seen this mount dropped under the expansion Wrath of the Lich King so I though drop rate must be very very low, even tho I got Utgarde Pinnacle as daily heroic almost every day O.o
Do not give up and happy hunting!
Solo'ed as a 348 Ret Pally.
The trash mobs on the gauntlet are pretty easy. Gather them up, and Divine Storm/Holy Wrath them down. Don't forget they are undead so Holy Wrath stuns them for a few seconds, which if you need to heal and have no Holy Power for Word Of Glory can be handy. Gathered up a few harpoons and cleared the trash.
For Skadi himself, used Guardian of Ancient Kings and Avenging Wrath straight away. Popped Word Of Glory every time Divine Purpose procced and just burnt him down. Was using Seal Of Insight for just a little extra healing, but Truth may have been faster and thus require less healing. Just make sure to stay out of Whirlwind. It still hits hard, but you should have a few seconds worth of time before your health gets too low.
Not entirely trivial, but soloable as tank-specced Feral Druid.
Before triggering the event, I changed to cat-form and prowled, then after triggering the event stealthed all the way to the end of the passage, where the harpoons are, and into the small enclosed area from which zombies spawn.
There, I switched to bear-form and started burning down the adds, preferrably casters (Witch Doctors) first, as they are the most annoying. After a while, all the adds had been destroyed (the ones outside come running when you attack), but my health as at 40% or so, so I kept nuking the zombies, and after each batch of zombies was slain, changed to caster-form and cast a few lifeblooms, before returning to bear-form.
I repeated that until at 100% health again, then after killing a batch of zombies, ran out and launched 5-6 harpoons at him at the same time (fewer may be needed), so he landed.
After that, it was simple enough to just burn him down - I may have used Frenzied Regeneration.
I easily soloed this guy at 85 as a prot warrior. I kept 2 adds alive so that I could use victory rush to heal myself. Used CDs during whirlwind. Was fairly easy.
Solo'ed Skadi today with a 85 feral tank druid in standard "Bloodthirsty Gladiator" pvp gear (ivlv 352) and completed the achivement "My Girl Loves to Skadi All the Time" in the process (3 harpoons are required now). To my surpise, Skadi finally dropped the Blue Protodrake, too, but I don't know if the achievement had any influence on it.
soloed as a feral dps in bear form Just use your frenzied Regen when needed the dmg reducers like barkskin or Survival instincts during whirlwind. ilvl 352
Soloed as a blood Dk. Didn't even budge my health at 155k . ilvl 358
its time to farm another mount!
I heard that he's angry because
Eye of Sulfuras
won't drop for him.
Well... been doing this for quite a while (198 kills on him according to statistics) as a BM hunter
but I've started wondering if you need to kill the 2 other bosses first to make sure he drops the mount? cause I've been skipping both of them, and all the trash till boss (cheers for camouflage)... anyone who knows?
EDIT: It is indeed possible to skip the 2 first bosses and the trash and still have the drake dropping. Got mine on the 234th try.
So all you stealthy guys are free of 2 bosses and trash, good luck everyone!
I've got a question about Skadi. If lets say I am to either be killed or vanish from Skadi and reset the fight, will it change the loot that he drops?
skadi wield the sulfuron hammer.
Usually I follow a tactic of disarming him at first, then when he goes whirlwind I'd sprint or use rocket boots to get away followed by an evasion nuke on him. However today, 17-08-11, he didn't even use whirlwind..
I don't know what this madness is :x
TIP: make sure that its heroic mode :) it might sound obvious but i just found out that the last couple of days ive been farming this drake i had it on normal mode and thats not fun to find out lol :D
As a Mage, simply use Mirror Image as soon as he dismounts. Very very easy fight. I have a Frost and Arcane specc, though I find Arcane to be more efficient for that fight.
Fighting this boss every day for more than a year, i first now realize he is wielding "stage one of
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
for lvl85 fury or arms warriors
a good tactic I use is:
when the fight starts I nitro boost(engineering only) to the mobs
I then heroic leap into the big group and target the caster(sorry forgot name)then charge and quickly kill him so he cannot shrink me
I then AoE the rest of the group and use victory rush only to heal
pick up the two harpoons on the floor
then two more mobs come out kill them and get third harpoon
I the run over to the middle launcher and hug the wall so the next set of mobs don't attack me
as soon as skadi flies by launches shoot the harpoons at him
kill him how you want I cap everything for a faster fight
if you are fast enough you will kill him before the mobs come back
kill them then loot
I hope this helps people
if anyone has any improvements please say
Level 85 Unholy Death Knight. Typically and laughably under-equipped.
I had to kill Skadi to finish out Elders of the Dungeons, and the Lunar Festival quests.
And I got killed more times than I care to admit.
Yesterday was the last day of Lunar Festival -- I was going to get that Elder title or die trying (heh).
So, I spent most of my gold on item enhancements, Battle Elixirs and Guardian Elixirs, supplemented by Victory Perfume and a Love Is in the Air Card. I ended up using the Elixir of Mighty Speed for Battle, and Elixir of Deep Earth for Guardian.
It took me almost an hour to do it, but (with the help of the tips here) I worked my way down to the end Harpoon Launchers, knocked Skadi off the dragon and pounded him to a pulp.
Solo. And, as I probably don't need to add - not in Heroic mode.
The guys at the end, just before the Elder, were cake.
Thanks, WowHead posters!
Piece of cake to solo on a Feral cat in mostly LFR gear - not even necessary to pop survival cooldowns or go bear. 1 5cp rip, 1 5cp FB and he's down, and you can simply swipe the adds.
Took me 6 tries to solo with an 85 elemental shammy (ilvl 375) in Heroic mode -- needed to figure out the right mechanics. (Some of you probably did it faster with lesser gear. I suck. I know.)
Once I got to the point where I got rid of most of the mobs and finally had enough health and mana to have a shot, I fired the harpoons, 3 in rapid succession. Next -- immediately throw both both elemental totems (basically tanking the first half of the fight) and pop all my cooldowns -- primarily Elemental Mastery and Heroism. The elementals held Skadi long enough that I could run an almost normal rotation of flame shock, lava burst, lightning bolt, lightning bolt... and when the elementals were killed Skadi was maybe at 40% health.
Then it was time for frost shock and totems to slow it down, and here the glyph of Unleashed Lightning was a godsend as I was able to fire off repeated Lightning Bolts as I ran backwards away (with Skadi slowed down). Skadi reached me and started using whirlwind but by then he was 10-15% of health and I lasted long enough that another flame shock/lava burst/2x lightning bolt combo finished him off. I was at about 1/3 health.
This one was, to me, one of the hardest heroic LK bosses to solo (Ymiron is an anticlimax after this one). Every 85 toon I've used on it has died repeatedly until I found the "formula". But now this one, too, can "Skadi All The Time."
Nice Sulfuron Hammer he has there. Now he just need the eye of Rag!
Soloing as rogue
I have a combat off spec with quickening and improved recuperate and it is beyong easy, you don't even need to be careful just use evasion, clos, and keep recuperate up and do any number of mistakes you want. If adds show up just use blade flurry.
A gear level of 387 currently, can probably be done with much much less.
I even tanked his whirlwind kind of thing. Maybe use feint if you need to, didn't check if it works against it.
The first time I tried doing this as a shadow priest I failed because of the lack of mana, even after using Dispersion, Shadowfiend, and Hymn of Hope.
The second time I did a lot better. I just rushed through most of them, shielded myself, and used Mind Sear. However then I got to the point my health and mana were a bit low, and I couldn't heal up because I "was in combat". I let two waves of the adds to just pass me, and without knowing, they decided to run back after running all the way to the end, not even to mention that they attacked me the second I got Skadi down off the drake.
Third time was pretty much the same as the second.
Conclusion: Soloing this as a Shadow Priest is hard.
In case you're wondering how this affects 85 Rogue soloing with patch 5.0.4, here's a little info. It's even easier. Just stealth all the way down the gauntlet. At the end kill the mobs that come to collect the harpoons. There's no need to even blade flurry. Just kill what comes and throw the harpoons when his mount is in range. When he lands, just ignore everything but him. KS him when BG goes green and he should be dead. Good luck!
Soloing at lvl 90 is a piece of cake on heroic, still waiting for the drop though.
Easily soloed him on my 90 enhan sham in LFR gear
got mount yesterday, first run.
he should have been a female frost vrykul, because Skadi (also spelled skade or Skaði ) was the norse goddess of winter and bow hunting
This is very easily solo-able as a 90 hunter, camouflage past all the mobs then you can kill Skadi, hopefully you will be luckier than me with mount drops!
Confirmed - No longer gives Silver Covenant rep after Revered.
I really wish there was a counter that told you how many times you've run each dungeon. Does anyone know of any add ons that offer that kind of tally information? Maybe something that breaks down, per character, how many times you've run each dungeon or raid, how many times on normal vs heroic, etc?
I just finally got the drake from Skadi tonight. (About 4:15am EST, 2/15/14) I would have leaped in the air with excitement if I hadn't badly injured my back, hence why I am home and able to play anyway.
I've farmed that damn drake for probably a year. I didn't keep a tally and kind of wish I would have. Although, I ran UP on heroic every day for months when it was new with friends of mine during heroic runs prior to actually TRYING for the proto.
Anyhow, I'm sure it was a few hundred times. I'm pretty excited to finally have it.
As if being allied with the Lich King wasn't reason enough to kill him, the Dungeon Journal for Utgarde Pinnacle says he earned his "nomme de guerre" by hunting down and killing the vrykul parents who saved their malformed children from Ymiron's wrath. Don't care about that? Those babies became the first humans.
So the humans of Azeroth exist today because of the mercy those brave vrykul parents gave their children and he pissed all over it.
Poor Skadi... Everyone is killing him everyday for his Drake... Because of that he doesn't even have time for dropping his
Eye of Sulfuras
to finally make his
... Poor guy.
Running this instance on Heroic as a level 90 in patch 6.0.2 (post stat squish), it appears that it takes several additional harpoons in order to down Grauf and get Skadi on the ground.
In previous patches it took three harpoons, it now appears to require at least six. This draws the fight out significantly for someone looking to farm the Blue Proto Drake. I hope this is an unintentional side effect of the changes in patch 6.0.2 and is fixed shortly.
It now only takes 3 harpoons again to get him to come down.
Over 3.5 years ago, I'd run this every day with a guy who I had been friends with. I think we ran it maybe 10-12 times, it dropped. Like a fool, I let him have it since he was going to be leaving in a couple months for the military. After he got it, he stopped running with me like he promised he would. I swear I've been running it almost every day (except when I took a 2 month break before WOD) and it still hasn't dropped. Getting the TLPD would be easier at this point lol
after 4 strong beers i discovered a glitch. when i activated a boss, i instantly blinked as a mage toward harpoons. mobs disapeared, harpoon phase also, boss respawned within next 30 seconds.
moral is that you shouldnt drink 4 beers during a farm of older instances. even blizzard cant foreseen that you use acceleration during such "challenges"
R.I.P. Mr Spock
The other day a player in my party was automatically assigned the blue proto-drake reins without any roll (gear drop was still being rolled for). Has the reins been adjusted as personal loot now? If so, then remember to loot Skadi yourself always.
You can actually get him down before Grauf does his first breath if you move fast enough to kill the 3rd harpooner when he spawns inside the corridor and then immediately run out to launch it. Should be relatively easy at 100, but having a high movespeed definitely helps.
As of 7.0 I get a yellow message reading "y eynes o veld danieb"
This looks like Common, and it only happens on my horde AFAIK
Anybody else notice how the adds in the hallway now spawn (as of patch 7.1) in the middle of the hallway instead of those two cubby holes?
Decided to go mount farming today, got no loot except gold. Kind of strange.. shouldn't the boss drop -any- loot at all? lol
I decided to run UP hc today and found something interesting.
Every single boss gave me 2 pieces of boss loot, which is probably the result of the new loot changes that made personal loot universal.
This (hopefully) gives mount farmers an increased chance to get the mount from the boss, so if you've been feeling crap about not getting it yet there is no better time to be farming for it than now. Good luck!
Aight fellows. I'm past 749 attempts and still no drop for me. My wife told me to put a comment in-here, so the wowhead luck would finally smile upon me. Keep your fingers crossed and Imma keep you up-to-date with my forthcoming attempts.
I have tried to get this mount so many times this month, and every single attempt I get the exact same things... gold and 2 pairs of scaled boots. Why does he have an extra pair of boots?
The Icecrown scourge event version of Skadi also has a chance to drop the mount!
Icecrown Rares Spawn Order and Locations
The rare bosses spawn in the following order. As the it rotates through 20 rare bosses, a full rotation is completed in 6 hours and 40 minutes.
Use a coordinate addon such as TomTom to use the coordinates below.
(This means there's about a 20 minute gap between spawns. They do a zone wide yell when they spawn, and there's at least a minute delay before they become active.)
Alternately, HandyNotes has created a plugin that marks all the rares on the map, and are coloured blue if you need a reward from them still.

Skadi doesn't know.
Second kill, got the mount. So happy!
can you reset the instance and farm this multiple times a day like you can some of the cata dungeons?
If you can't use the harpoon launchers during the fight, it's probably because your bags are full. Although it seems like you can loot the harpoons from the ground, you aren't actually able to launch them if you don't have any empty slots in your bag.
