Updated January 12th with the data we have so far
!
We're at the point where we have a reliable theory for all six triggers and can consistently trigger each of the training moodes. Tnd the article has been updated to reflect this.
Now, we're going to need log data. See the "Next Steps" section to find out how to help!
One of the more enigmatic trinkets this expansion is
红玉雏龙蛋壳
. Players who picked it when handing in
红玉新生法池:拜荒者入侵
, or who received while doing Ruby Life Pools (or as a choice in their vault!) will likely attest to its underwhelming initial performance.
As it turns out, the on-use effect of this trinket is
not
flavor, and can turn your whelp into a (mostly) reliable fireball-throwing demon. We'll explain some of our findings below, and provide a bit of background into some potential bugs we found along the way.
In order to finish breaking this thing, we need data! If you have a
红玉雏龙蛋壳
, and you would like to contribute some, train it to maximum in any of the modes, and use the Discord link present at the end of this article to submit logs of content you run with it. Training takes 7 days, so the more whelps we have, the better!
How to Train Your Ruby Whelp
The
红玉雏龙蛋壳
has six possible procs: two damage spells (
火焰射击
,
高射火焰新星
), a haste buff(
红翼之下
), a crit buff (
昏睡红玉暖意
), an AoE heal (
疗愈吐息
), and a single target heal (
治愈气息
).
You can train your whelp by targeting the following entity, and using the trinket:
Single-target damage
(
火焰射击
): Target a hostile enemy (one that fits the "harm" condition for macros) where there are
strictly less than 3 total enemies
within 6yd of the target (including itself)
AoE damage
(
高射火焰新星
): Target a hostile enemy (one that fits the "harm" condition for macros) where there are
3 or more total enemies
within 6yd of the target (including itself)
Crit buff buffs
(
昏睡红玉暖意
): Target yourself where there are
strictly less than three allies within 6yd of you
, including yourself. "Allies" are considered healable characters or NPCs (the macro check for this is "help").
Single Target Healing procs
(
治愈气息
): Target a friendly NPC where there are
strictly less than three
friendly, healable NPCs in a 6yd range of your target.
AoE healing procs
(
疗愈吐息
): Target a friendly NPC where there are
three or more
friendly NPCs in a 6d range of your target
Haste buff
(
红翼之下
): Target yourself where there are
three or more allies within 6yd of you
, including yourself. "Allies" are considered healable characters or NPCs (the macro check for this is "help").
To simplify this, we have been able to guarantee 100% reliable rolls using the following targets.
To train your whelp in a given mode, follow these instructions:
Haste buff
: Stand within the healing target dummies in Valdrakken and cast on yourself
Crit buff
: Stand in the middle of nowhere and target yourself
Single target damage
: Find an isolated mob and target it
AoE damage
: target the cleave target dummies in Valdrakken
Single target heal
: Target Alexstrasza while nobody is near her (you can also use any of the other dragon aspects)
AoE heal
: Target one of the healing target dummies in Valdrakken
These are denoted by six currencies in-game, tied to your character. Getting a new
红玉雏龙蛋壳
, upgrading
红玉雏龙蛋壳
with valor or vendoring
红玉雏龙蛋壳
does not change the training
. All these currencies are capped to 6, meaning that after six training episodes, your whelp will be "maxed" in a certain training mode.
You can track your current training progress using this script or a
weakaura
, provided by zalt:
/run for i=2148,2153,1 do V=C_CurrencyInfo.GetCurrencyInfo(i); print(V.name.." - discovered:",tostring(V.discovered)..", quantity:",tostring(V.quantity)) end
You can only have a maximum of 6 currency points across all 6 currencies. If you fully train your whelp and then re-train it in a different mode, the highest current mode will lose 1, and your new mode will gain that point.
A Fully Trained Whelp
When your whelp spawns (this is currently ~1ppm), it will pick an action based on what you have trained it on. There is a very small amount of variance on this:
If your whelp is
fully trained
into one damage spell, it may occasionally use the other spell. Right now we have a decent amount of data on Raszageth with a fully trained fireball whelp, and have a couple of fire breaths, but
only
when adds or Fodder demons were up
If your whelp is
fully trained
into one healing spell, it may occasionally use the other spell.
If your whelp is
fully trained
into one stat buff, it may occasionally grant the other stat buff.
The Results and Bugs
Trinket Performance
With a relatively small amount of data so far, we can safely say that the fire shot (single target) mode is potentially
significantly
better than most people assume it is, with a
6min Terros log
showcasing it comfortably keeping up with
癫狂伤逝火炬
.
We have also collected a number of logs showcasing the stat buffs, although we do not have a high whelp case for it. Our 372 crit whelp happily provides
2235 crit rating
in 12 second increments with an average uptime of 16% in keys, though - making it one of the biggest stat buffs available from a trinket today. As a point of reference, a 421
骨喉的大脚趾
provides 1727 crit on roughly similar uptime.
Bugs
Because, yes, there are some.
The trinket appears to suffer from the same rppm issue
迷你原生锻炉
, with
wild
swings early after the start of an encounter. This is the first biggest problem of this trinket: it is both a low rppm (~1), and its effective proc rate can swing massively up or down. For example, this is from Ayrin's Halls of Valor key; crit buff in pink, haste buff in green,
嗜血
in yellow:
The second issue is more pernicious, particularly in Mythic+. On two occasions so far, our fireball whelp decided to cast
火焰射击
on enemies not in combat within 60 yards, and we still have no idea why.
Finally, while testing, a number of users have noticed that their trinket's remaining cooldown lost a few hours and was usable in 14-16 hours instead of 24 hours. We're trying to find what does this, but as it can happen even when offline, we're assuming it is a server event of some sort.
Credits
Credit for all of these discoveries goes to the following people, as many different things happened in parallel:
Mandl (Blood DK guide writer), for initially noticing some elements of the training behavior on beta
Arty (Vengeance Demon Hunter), who wasted a vault to pick a 421 whelp shell on a hunch from #1 to gather data and verified both the fireball mode, and how strong relative to other trinkets it is when fully trained
zalt, for currently identifying the currencies, maximum values and training modes from game data
The folks are Bear Troupe (Mandl, Itamae, Meyra, Arty, The Asa Spades, paoanii, Howl, Ayrin) for piecing out a large amount of info on proc rates, context-aware procs, modes, and two potential bugs
Schlim, for figuring out one of the two Fire Nova triggers
All of the folks who came into Bear Troupe and spent countless hours copying characters on PTR to narrow down the conditions ^_^
