To see lumber, you need to (1) learn to be a Lumberjack, which you get from a dude in your Neighborhood near the "neighborhood center" where vendors the bulletin board are, and (2) an Axe in your inventory; you can buy one from the same dude for 25 gold. Then head to a Classic zone - like, say, Elwynn or Ashenvale - and you should see yellow Log icons on your minimap. Head to the associated tree and click on the glowing, sparkly, yellow holographic axe that's stuck in the tree. +1 Lumber. Repeat.

Seems like you have to learn the lumberjacking skill and purchase the axe separately on all of your alts? This is going to be very tedious to set up. Why can't it be learn once and all of your alts automatically have the skill? The axe also seems like an unnecessary use of a bag slot.

There's a bit of misinformation going around. You don't have to be a "lumberjack". Just buy the hatchet and that's it. No training needed. Click on it to scan, it seems to be permanent but if you're not seeing anything, click on it again. One toon can buy them for all the alts, just one at a time then mail it.

You don't need to be a lumberjack, ~~just have the axe~~. Now, the axe disappears and you learn the "Track Lumber" ability. Of course, there's nothing wrong with being a lumberjack. "I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK, I sleep all night and I work all day."

These wood numbers are calculated for crafting decorations from all professions in Early Access Housing. With the launch of the new Midnight expansion, these numbers will likely change.

Ironwood Lumber (Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms): you need 506 pieces

It doesn't appear that all zones have Lumber, logic be damned.

Teldrassil for example...doesn't have lumber.

switch to slow flying and just fly around... places with a lot of trees help,,, make sure to click the hatchet when you arrive in the zone.- hope that helps
fyi for shadowlands .. the first zone you go...you will see the node in areas with trees -

UPDATE: You can get more than one log so far I have gotten x2 logs ( In Azshara on a hordie)

I've found that the best place to harvest this lumber is in Northern Barrens, at Lushwater Oasis (the pool of water that's just south of Wailing Caverns). Just fly in circles around the oasis; at any given moment, there will be at least 1-2 nodes available. I was able to get 100 pieces in next to no time. If for some reason it stops producing, fly to any of the other oases in the zone; since there's such a large collection of trees at them, the wood seems to spawn at them rather frequently.

Compared a couple of different spots for this Lumber:

Moonglade: 300 lumber/hour
Durotar route shown at https://www.method.gg/guides/best-routes-to-farm-lumber: 360 lumber/hour

This is on a druid fully focused on gathering lumber with no distractions. I much prefer Durotar because there's open space and the trees are fairly small so that you can find the lumber spot easier. I also tried the Oasis spots in Barrens but did not find it good at all so didn't stick around to get a lumber/hour reading.

With all of the optimal routes out there, the one I found most efficient for myself was a tri-rotation at the border of Northern and Southern Barrens. Start at Lushwater Oasis near WC and circle it a few times, head southeast to Stagnant Oasis for a few laps, then head southwest to the Overgrowth. This will give you three plentiful sources and very short travel times between them. There are also a handful of spawns between Lushwater and Stagnant that you can pick-up along the way during your rotation.

I've yet tried any other zone than Durotar, I'd still recommend Durotar over anything else as i can imagine the alternatives being much more bothersome dealing with large trees and view blocking tree crowns.
In a quick farm before the weekly reset i got 70x lumber in roughly 10-11 minutes, with only 4 trees ever giving more than a single lumber.

Why is Durotar great?

Great visibility, the trees are spread apart so usually a single upward flap with Dragonflight flying is enough between nodes.
The nodes themself are very visible on the trees and don't blend into the ground or the trees themself.

Notes or tips
Use the addons GatherMate + Data in combination of Routes (CurseForge Links) to create a drawn loop on the map.
For the route setting I've used Clustering: 50 and then click the "Foreground" button a bunch of times.
I then flew counter-clockwise as i noticed many of the lumber nodes were along that path when following the loop.

Well I tried all the Barrens and Durotar suggestions and was having crappy luck. Like 55 in an hour kind of luck. So I went to Brill, thinking theres lots of trees! But My gatherer toon doesn't have access to old Brill yet. So! I went over to Western Plaguelands and JACKPOT! I'm finding way more nodes in WP and they are respawning FAST. So if you're having bad luck like me, try Eastern Kingdom instead of the overcamped Kalimdor classic zones.

I have tried a few zones in kalimdor ( Un'goro, ferales and Desolace) then i went to EK to Elwynn Forest, but i found zero ironwood lumber :( is this broken from the midnight pre-patch or am i just this unlucky?

edit: don't be like me. You have to click on the hatchet again to see the lumber!
