First, use the 在废料中搜寻 Recipe to salvage 一堆锈蚀的碎片. This will result in mostly random engineering materials, with a small chance at obtaining a Prototype like 原型：加速药水炸弹. These can be salvaged with the Recipe 拆卸发明 to obtain 草草写下的纸条 (2-6) along with additional 一堆锈蚀的碎片.
Note that the Prototypes have the 'Unique: Prototype (1)' tag, meaning you can only have 1 in your inventory at a time accross all of the different prototypes. You'll want to salvage or use them as soon as you get one.

The War Within Engineering - Discovery Mechanics (A great idea, or scrap it?)
Engineers can learn 75 new recipes as of The War Within's launch, 50 of which are gated behind Discovery mechanics.

Discovery Mechanics - How it Works

Engineers get started with 在废料中搜寻, taught by their profession trainer.
在废料中搜寻 will quickly allow the engineer to discover the profession's other essential skills, standard parts, and be a rare source of prototypes .
They will quickly learn 发明, which is a guaranteed* prototype each day. (*While supplies last)

Prototypes are single-use versions of engineer recipes which teach that recipe when used.

IMPORTANT: Once an Engineer learns the recipe, they will never receive the prototype version again.

拆卸发明 can be used on unwanted or excess prototypes (including 无法辨识的原型), generating up to 10 一堆锈蚀的碎片 and 草草写下的纸条.
草草写下的纸条 create 为了便于理解而整理后的一些想法, which can only be used to learn Engineering recipes. Neither item has any vendor value or other uses.

Discovery Mechanics - How it Doesn't Work

The discovery flavor and mechanics are built around 3 abilities: 在废料中搜寻, 发明, and 拆卸发明.
If an engineer learns all 14 recipes linked to prototypes, they will never receive a prototype again.
Instead of 无法辨识的原型, they directly receive 草草写下的纸条.

What about when you have invented everything?
There is light at the end of the tunnel!
When you have discovered the final recipe requiring 为了便于理解而整理后的一些想法 , you will cease to receive 草草写下的纸条 completely.
在废料中搜寻 will now have a chance to create the finished version of prototyped recipes, such as the tinker modules and potion bombs.
发明 will have a 100% chance to produce the finished version of one of the prototyped recipes.

There are 14 prototypes, plus the 无法辨识的原型 which can be turned into one of the fourteen. Once you've learned all 14, Scour Through Scrap/Invent goes straight to Hastily Scrawled Notes.
