If you have Khaz Algar Engineering many mobs will randomly drop these. So it makes sense to fly to Dornogal as soon as possible to learn Engineering, before you start questing and leveling.

If you wish to mass Pilfer, I suggest using Thorium Widgets and Unstable Triggers. As of writing it's the most cost-efficient. Over 300+ Pilfers for Thorium Widgets the AVG is 4.16667 Scrap per 5 Pilfered Thorium Widgets. For Unstable Triggers the AVG is 4.83333.

For science I will use 从部件里扒窃 on every available item and list how many 一堆锈蚀的碎片 I got from them.

Due to gold constraints I will repeat every item 20 times to get an average
I will add items created during the War Within at a later time when prices settle (for example 混乱电路 is 40k gold as of writing this post)

*Only done two casts due to the price
**NOTES: Dragonflight items seem cheapest right now for how much they yield. Rank doesn't seem to matter. Bolts are never worth Pfilering (unless extremely cheap).

Thorium widgets do seem to be extremely good and cost efficient for getting these. Really cheap to buy the base materials on the auction house, or just buy the widgets directly.

Railbots and I would suppose any mech that you can scrap seem to drop one pile of rusted scrap. Treasures around the zones also award these. The last several I opened contained at least 1 but most contained 5.

So I tried to spec Scrapper and farm these, you indeed get 1-3 per mob, and you can farm quite a lot of them. But they do not seem that useful for anything. You end up learning all recipes quite fast.

If you're trying to farm these, I'd highly recommend The Whirring Field in Hallowfall, there are Dark-Crazed Harvesters that are constantly respawning because the of the quests here, as well as also being a place where they're getting mobbed by other players, so there's never a shortage of things to scrap. As another bonus, it's also a good spot to farm dirt piles too.

The Harvesters here are being killed frequently for quests. You can get quite a few just salvaging from the dead ones in the area. And get your quests done at the same time!

Is there a purpose to these once you've learned most of the recipes?

I'm at the point where I can no longer learn recipes from Comprehensibly Organized Ideas w/o unlocking more things through specialization. I can use a few for various toys and tinkers, but I'm acquiring them faster than I can spend them. I'm 40/40 on both Parts and Inventing, and trying to acquire parts for the mount through Pilfering, but mostly just end up with some Bountiful Bolts and more scrap. I don't see any way to re-process them into something useful, so Pilfering has felt like a bit of a bust.

Am I missing something here?

When you're down to 1 or 2 learnable patterns from 为了便于理解而整理后的一些想法 do not learn the last recipe, as long as there is 1 left Invent will get you a guaranteed prototype that you can disassemble to refund some scrap. If there are no recipes left to learn then you'll get no scrap and just some scrawled notes, making invent more expensive.
if your main is engineering you probably have lots of scrap but if it's an alt then recommend not learning everything (likely the delivery drill)

The best farm location I found was on the map The Ringing Deeps, apparently there are more EZ-Mine Bismuth and EZ-Mine Ironclaw on that map, as well as several treasures that also drop

Read through few posts and comments on the best farm spot, and stumbled across a pretty good one whilst trying them out.

Fly to Hallowfall Gate in the ringing deeps, and this area is pretty good for circling and killing machine speakers, constructs, and using engineering to gain scrap. Got about 10 scrap every 2/2.5 minutes on average.

However, the best part i found was pretty good, go to /way 47.36, 20.04 .

At a set of steps in the middle of Hallowfall Gate, you'll find 2 Dogmatic machine speakers fighting some guards. Now every time one of them dies, a High Speakers Construct spawns, which engineers can kill and harvest for 1 scrap. Combined with the machine speakers and just rotating back and forth between all 3 spawning, I got 100 scrap in just over 22 minutes (22.34). A big help was the speakers randomly dropping 8 scrap every 6/7 spawns, but you cycle through them so fast its pretty good.

Better on low pop servers, but easily done with 2/3 folk too. And if you have an issue with the construct spawning, just rotate around the ads immediately behind, or go up and down the walkway, when you come back should spawn after a speaker kill or so.

It's also just a bit easier to kill these guys than the harvesters for lower lvl/lazier players such as myself :'] .

So 排气臂铠 have these as a reagent but don't require engineering to wear. Does this mean you have to do a guild or private order and just have the engineer provide them? and public orders can't be made for them?

I have a far better, superior idea...

Use the Khaz Algar Engineering ability: "Pilfer Through Parts"
This works on ANY engineering reagents you have or can make as long as you have a group of 5 or multiples of 5. I had just over 2,300 Dragon Isles Serevite ore, rank 3, and I made 575 handfuls of Serevite Bolts which produces 2-3 bolts which gave me a total of 2323 of them. These I used the Pilfer Through Parts ability (464 times) and this produced these:
470 Pile of Rusted Scrap
254 Bountiful Bolts
I then did my Scour Through Scrap 94 times to end up with a lot of stuff, things to disassemble for the Hastily Scrawled Notes and quite a few parts usable in Khaz Algar engineering. Of course these were random drops, but you get the idea, stay safe at the Engineering Crafting table and make stuff!

I am going to assume that many of you plan to use the Piles of Rusted Scrap to find some kind of random invention that you can then use the "Disassemble Invention" ability on to produce the much needed Hastily Scrawled Notes. I would strongly recommend that you only get enough pages, 45, to make 3 sets of the Comprehensibly Organized Ideas as the spell when used (Rearrange Notes) will show you randomly up to 3 plans you can learn. If you have already learned quite a few, these DO NOT repeat, so you could accidently waste some of your Piles of Rusted Scrap, thinking you can just make the whole stack and then convert the inventions into pages and so on. Just thought I would save you making extras as they are soul bound and cannot be sold.

This took just under an hour. I would suggest you check through your bank inventory and your other toons that are miners to see what ores and bars you have to make simple stuff to use the Pilfer Through Parts ability on.

My Engineering toon is a shadow priest, just turned level 80 yesterday, and still has DF gear mixed in with TWW stuff, so I don't live very long facing multiple trash mobs just trying to get a single piece of Rusted Scrap, rinse and repeat another 4 time to get enough to try one Scour Through Scrap attempt, this is a much easier way to go.

The place to farm PILE OF RUSTED SCRAP is in the Hallows at or near the Whirring Field. There are all these "Dark-Crazed Harvesters" there. Every harvester killed drops at least one "Pile of Rusted Scrap" and in many cases you can farm a piece from the ones you don't even kill yourself. (like skinners do) Even better this is a busy quest area so there are people killing these things constantly - I looted 92 in a little under 30 minutres on my Gnome Warlock.

There are 14 prototypes, plus the 无法辨识的原型 which can be turned into one of the fourteen. Once you've learned all 14, Scour Through Scrap/Invent goes straight to Hastily Scrawled Notes.

Dunno if anyone pointed this out here, but if the character is 'brand new' to the profession (just learned it and skill 1), just grab the Engineering Treasure in Dornogal (in the room to the left of the Ajz-Kahet teleport), and you'll get 20+ Scrap in the process, more than enough to at least bring Skill to 5, and proceed leveling up.

You'll also spend less time trying to farm those first 20+ scrap this way, if you want to do it in more characters.

I hate this concept with a passion! Engineering is on my alt with whom i dont fly through open world, i do nearly no quests or interact with anything. I log in, craft stuff with concentration, and log off. This is not possible because of this idiotic mechanic. If there would be at least like some rare mob that i can kill once a week and it would drop like a 100 of those, but no -.-

if you are looking for this for the void deathcycle mount, you do not have to be engineer to get the 10 needed to craft the red button. just buy it from the engi vendors. they have a cap but all you have to do is visit 3 of them and you should have enough.

For any NON-Engineers looking to buy this for a crafting order (provide all the mats, right?) you can NOT. Only Engineers can buy it from any of the Vendors. Thney will not list it in their inventory for you - they do not sell it to non-Engineer peons. :P

A little late to matter seeing as how the expansion is over at the time of this post in 4 days. But Ive gotten hundreds of these using the darkflame cleft cloth farming macro in the first hallway. You queue up a follower dungeon for DFC, clear the first hallway up to the first boss then use the macro, rinse and repeat. Been getting like 18-25 of these every minute or so, depending how geared/good your aoe is to kill everything in the first hall. Make sure just Darkflame Cleft is checked in your follower dungeon list and use this macro:

high speakers construct 43.2 19.9 spawns every 10 seconds when doing the 2 side of the stairs targets
just stay by the steps and off it and one dogmatic machine speaker endlessly as they repeat moments later
earning over 300 per hour here with the other mobs on the platform
