What is the Frost Mage Mage Tower Challenge? - Thwarting The Twins
The Mage Tower Challenge encounter for Frost Mages is Thwarting The Twins. You must overcome the Magespear brothers in order to obtain your Challenge Appearance. This challenge consists of 2 main bosses that alternate for 5 phases. The scenario is designed to test not only your ability to DPS, but also your mastery of all aspects of your specialization including damage and utility usage.

Best Frost Mage Gear for Mage Tower Challenge
The TImewalking version of the Mage Tower Challenge follows Timewalking gear rules. Your gear, trinkets and stats do matter, but all your gear is scaled down to a maximum item level of 50. In order to maintain a similar challenge throughout expansions. many items and abilities have been deliberately disabled including
Covenants, Legendaries, and Azerite powers/gear
.
To avoid unnecessary farming of past expansion gear, this guide will be aimed at getting your Dragonflight character through the Mage Tower Challenge using mostly items readily available in the current Dragonflight expansion. Particularly powerful items from past expansions will be noted below but shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge though they may give you an additional edge. Best Frost Mage Stat Priority for Mage Tower Challenge
In general, Frost Mages will want to priotize the following stats to maximize priority target damage for this encounter.
Intellect > Mastery > Crit (to ~30%) > Haste > Versatility > Crit (to 33.34%) > Critical Strike (after 33.33%)
As always, the optimal stat distribution for your character may differ from the above and it is best to simulate your character to fully optimize your stats.
Best Frost Mage Consumables and Enchants for Mage Tower Challenge
When it comes to Timewalking gear, you can enhance your gear in a multitude of different ways not currently available in Dragonflight. While these extra enhancements and enchants might give you a slight edge, they shouldn't be necessary to complete the challenge. As such, we'll mostly be looking at what Dragonflight consumables and enchants you can use to help your character in the challenge.

Below we'll provide a thorough breakdown of the Mage Tower challenge encounter detailing a step-by-step walkthrough of each stage or phase as well as notable enemies and abilities. We'll offer strategies for overcoming each obstacle though there's usually multiple ways of overcoming difficulties.
The encounter has two bosses that alternate while adding new mechanics each time, making five phases.
Phase 1
You will begin by kiting

. I like start the encounter by placing the edge of

before the encounter begins so that he will immediately be frozen and will not move until you hit him with your first cast. Do not let
卡兰姆·法师之矛
hit you;

will take you to very low health or even one-shot you. It's best to kite him in large circles. Always stay further than 10 yards from him even if it means interrupting casts.
Karam gains a stacking movement speed buff, so you may need to burn
冰冷血脉
to nuke him down before this becomes too much for you to handle, but holding it for the start of Phase 2 will make the rest of the fight easier. Simply cast
寒冰箭
at him, while using
冰枪术
and
冰风暴
as they proc. If he gets too close,
冰霜新星
and run away. Avoid the purple pools on the floor; they deal damage and slow you down.
Phase 2
Phase 2 begins when Karam reaches 30% health. He will go immune and begin to heal and

will attack you. Do not

; doing so will cause him to move, and it's useful to keep him in the center of the arena.
Raest will summon small adds (
暗影残迹
and

), which do nothing except move towards you. Like Karam, they will quickly kill you if they get too close. Use

if you need to fade threat in a pinch. Keep

on cooldown to control them. Use

on cooldown to generate

procs to funnel extra damage into the boss.
If you can manage to hold
冰冷血脉
for Phase 2, the massive amount of
寒冰指
procs from your Orbs should enable you to keep it active well into Phase 3.
This phase lasts for 30 seconds, so do as much damage as you can here. Use
冰冷血脉
,

, and potions / trinkets to get

as low as possible here while

recovers. Doing a lot of damage in this phase is key to successfully completing the encounter.
You only have 30 seconds to attack Raest here, and the fight ends once he dies. You will probably need multiple phases to get Raest to 0% HP.
If after 30 seconds you have not killed Raest, Phase 1 begins again with a new mechanic.
Phase 3
Karam begins chasing you again. Raest no longer summons small adds, although the existing ones don't despawn and will continue to attack you; keep them controlled with
暴风雪
and
寒冰宝珠
.
A new mechanic in this phase is the
异世之手
, which is a priority target. As soon as it spawns, you must switch your focus to it (freeze the adds and Karam if necessary with
冰霜新星
or your pet's
冰冻术
) and nuke it down. It will cast
异世之握
; as with most other abilities in this encounter, this will one-shot you if you allow it to be cast.
Counterspell at the very end of the cast, giving you more time to attack the Hand.
About five seconds after interrupting, the cast will begin again; the Hand must die before this second cast is complete. You will probably get between two and three Hands in this phase before burning Karam to 30%. If you cannot kill the hand in time, be ready to use with
寒冰屏障
/
深寒凝冰
or

back to full health (if you can survive it).
Phase 4
Karam goes immune again and Raest again begins to attack you and summon adds. The
异世之手
will not spawn in this phase. However, Raest will place purple runes on the ground (

). You or your

must stand in this rune and soak it until it disappears, otherwise a

will spawn and kill you. If it is active, move your
水元素
here to handle this: when the mechanic starts you simply need to quickly confirm where it is, issue the move command to your pet, and then you can go back to focusing on other things. If your
水元素
is not active, you will have to go stand in the rune yourself. If it spawns in a bad place, use
寒冰屏障
/
深寒凝冰
to survive because you have to stand there.
Attack Raest, control adds and stamp on runes to make it through to the last phase.
Phase 5
Karam spawns one final time, but Raest is also active. This means that you will simultaneously be dealing with Karam; Raest; the small
暗影残迹
and
阴影魔
adds;
异世之手
; and
召唤符文
.
Soaking the
召唤符文
is your priority, with
异世之手
a close second. You should also kite Karam (don't bother directly attacking him: keep him at bay with Blizzard and Frozen Orb) while attacking Raest. The encounter is complete when Raest dies; you do not need to kill Karam.
If you accidentally kill Karam with
碎冰
, Raest will begin to deal massively increased damage with his
暗影箭
, but you may still be able to complete the encounter. With effective use of defensives like
寒冰护体
,
操控时间
, and healing potions you will be able to survive this for a little while, but Mages do not have the tools to stay alive forever, so if this happens you should try to ignore everything else and race to kill Raest before you die.
Additional Tips
Cleave and Funnel are your best allies in this fight. Use
暴风雪
in AoE as much as possible. It can be worth it to avoid the adds with
寒冰宝珠
as to not accidently kill them. Keeping them us as long as possible will mean the boss dies faster.
Everything in this fight can be frozen; use them if needed to help kite. Remember to use
冰冻术
frequently for extra damage.
You can move your
水元素
onto the
召唤符文
to soak it, negating the need to move yourself! The Rune always spawns close to the same location.
If a
召唤符文
spawns in an awful location and you do not have your
水元素
active, you can run into it and use
寒冰屏障
/
深寒凝冰
to attempt to safely soak it.
If needed, you can hold your second
时间扭曲
and
冰冷血脉
in for the start of Phase 4, as the extra damage helps at lot as the fight nears its end.
Focus, Cursor, and Mouseover Macros can be very useful for keeping Karam slowed.

This fight is all about how quickly you can burst

down, but if you are unable to survive the

phase then you will not make good progress. I recommend using

on the pull early on, and trying to hold it for Phase 2 as you get more familiar with the fight.

Got him to 1% but my problem is that Karam keeps dying first so I get $%^& on by the other one.

The recent class changes to Mage in 10.1.5 have made this encounter significantly easier (Rune of Power removed, 15% dmg increase overall). I was working towards this in the final days of 10.1 and overnight saw a dps increase of 1-3k dps with the same gear after the update. The biggest challenges to me were the Mage's lack of self healing and keeping Karam at bay. I found it helpful / necessary to spec into talents which improved survivability,

Some Tips
On the pull, I dragged Karam to the outer border of the kill area (just on the hill) to place his initial purple pools outside of the fight area. This helps to keep the "Rune area" near the entrance clear and easier to navigate in the later part of the fight.
I found it extremely effective to hold my
无拘之怒药水
for the 2nd Time Warp (assuming you are specced into
时霎扭曲
), to be used once Raest Magespear will no longer be shielded. Because the potion lasts for 1 minute, you only get 30 seconds of effective burn on Raest if you use your potion the first time Karam goes into shield (Phase 2). I was able to burn Raest to 57% on his first exposure, then sub 20% after the 2nd Time Warp + potion.
Due to the high movement, occasionally you may not kill the
异世之手
before their cast, but you can afford to Ice Block (
深寒凝冰
) twice during the encounter (by resetting the CD with
急速冷却
). Just remember to prioritize Runes > Hands > everything else.
To control Karam, I spammed
减速
at all times,
冲击波
with the extended knocback
动荡引爆
(VERY IMPORTANT), and
龙息术
for emergencies when I had to soak a rune and he was right on top of me.
Trinkets
This was one of the few times that I found
残缺的种荚
ineffective, because I was unable to stand in one place for very long, and ultimately the dmg from the trinket was not performing that well. I opted to use the 700 Honor PVP trinket from the Valdrakken PVP vendor

because the 1min CD of burst primary stat pairs perfectly with the dmg burst windows of the fight and mage cds. For second trinket I used

because it was what I had in my bags, but you can use anything here really. I found that the heirloom absorb trinket was not necessary here, and I would recommend running double DPS trinkets here.

I decided to take this challenge on recently to get bear form and the mount. I completed 6 of them in 10.1.7 and the healer challenge just after 10.2 dropped. On each of the challenge pages it listed what is considered the easiest spec, which is what I used for each:
The Highlord's Return: Guardian Druid took me less than 10 attempts
Feltotem's Fall: BM Hunter (main) took me less than 10 attempts. I had completed all 3 Hunter challenges (Feltotem, Highlord, and the twins) in Legion and was familiar with these 3 fights already.
Thwarting the Twins: Frost Mage took me about 50 attempts
Closing the Eye: Havoc DH took me about 40 attempts
An Impossible Foe: Fury Warrior took me about 60 attempts
The God-Queen's Fury: Ret Paladin took me about 10 attempts
End of the Risen Threat: Mistweaver Monk took me about 30 attempts because I was interrupting at the wrong time in phase 1… only took me 3 attempts after making it past phase 1.
General Tips:
All characters were equipped in full 402 Time Rift and Dream Surge gear, Time Rift trinkets, and the 415 Dream Surge weapons. I did DF enchants and used DF flask and Sharpening stones on each attempt. Used feral hide drums as well but no DPS pots or food.
First and foremost, this is about the mechanics. Your primary focus should be to understand how to respond to each mechanic and be able to each one accordingly. Most mechanics are unforgiving.
I highly recommend creating a new talent loadout and moving spells/abilities you don’t need out of the way. Checkout your class specific talent recommendations, there are some common talents that you don’t need, like group utility and some often unused talents that can be very helpful like fury warrior Wrecking Throw. Mistweaver recommended a different build for each phase, which was very helpful.
Ensure that your main abilities (defensives and DPS CD's) are key bound or readily available to see/manage CDs and to use them in a timely fashion. For fury I had 2 DPS CD macros, one with Spear and Avatar and the other with Ravager and Reckless. Spear and Reckless I did as I was always positioning myself to deal with the adds.
Use macros where you can. For The Twins, I used a /target macro with Comet Storm to quickly switch to Hands and to generally saved that CD to drop quick DPS on the hands. For ret paladin I used with Hammer of Justice.
Turn off music and ambience noise. Turn up dialog. Turn sound effects down. These challenges emote their effects really well and can help you respond. You can of course use DBM and timers to manage the mechanics, I used DBM and tried to watch upcoming mechanics timers too, but most of the time, hearing the callout was good to "click the button" that responded to it (interupt, switch target, DPS CD, defensive CD, etc).
Use Plater addon, especially for An Impossible Foe. I didn’t use it until this challenge, but I found myself struggling to find the right imps to focus and to manage their HP. This really helped.
Most challenges require you to be able to execute your rotation and do decent DPS to beat the clock (mechanics overwhelming you).
I am a hunter main. Other than that, I'm average at best on all of the other classes. I used the Hekili addon to help me manage my rotations during the fights. I generally ignored DPS CDs as those are usually saved to manage certain mechanics/adds.
Don’t give up. They are all doable. Take breaks, if you are failing, especially to execute a mechanic a few times in a row revisit the guide or a youtube tutorial, maybe you're missing something. It's simply about learning the mechanics and then getting into the routine to respond to them, like any raid progression… as you get farther into fights you have less attempts on the new mechanics so master them one at a time.
Frost Tips:
I used /target hand with Comet Storm and generally saved it as a mini CD for hands. I found this a quick way to switch as soon as the hand was up and to start dps. Saved interupt for later in the cast.
Blast wave was a life saver.
Use blast wave or Ice Cold to get to Runes if needed.
Nova and Cone of Cold are very useful if Karam doesnt seem to be getting slower with frost bolt.
Try to send frozen orb out of adds, just use blizzard to keep them slowed and reset orb for more FoF procs. add management is about trying to keep them all going in a similar direction while you can strafe away without running into one set or the other. Blink through them if needed to make them all come at you from the same direction while you move the opposite way. Karam is always the threat in adds running your way.
