Welcome to Wowhead's Frost Death Knight guide. This guide will help you master your Frost Death Knight in most forms of PvE content in the game, including raids and dungeons.

Frost Death Knight Overview
Frost Death Knight is a Two-Handed
and
Dual-Wield plate DPS specialization focusing on dealing both Physical and magical damage. Frost can guarantee critical hits on its primary damage-dealing ability,

As a Hero Class, new Frost Death Knights start at Level 8 instead of Level 1. All races can play Frost Death Knights, except for Dracthyr and Earthen. Players who enjoy resource management, reacting to procs, and setting up cooldown windows will enjoy Frost.

Frost Death Knight Changes in Midnight
With Midnight, WoW's core combat systems have received substantial changes. Frost Death Knight, however, got its changes early, in patch 11.2. For Midnight, Frost sees hardly any changes outside of some minor tuning adjustments. If it has been a while since you last played Frost and are curious what's new, details on the 11.2 rework are included here.

Previous Frost Changes
Patch 11.2 brings Frost's biggest shakeup since the Dragonflight talent tree update, and even that update was more focused on providing familiar Shadowlands-era talents and Legendaries in a cohesive tree. Ghosts of K'aresh has brought the kind of rework to Frost that we were not expecting to see until Midnight. Nearly every node in the spec talent tree has changed, along with new pathways throughout the tree, creating multiple build possibilities. The gameplay will still feel familiar to veterans of the spec while leaving it in a flexible state for further changes down the road.
Conceptually, Frost's core abilities have stayed the same. There is a primary Rune spender, a primary Runic Power spender, and
凛风冲击
with Rime to provide resource-free GCDs.
杀戮机器
is still the most critical proc in the rotation, while
冰霜之柱
is still the spec's primary cooldown. The bulk of changes are directed at clunky talents or game balance concerns that made Frost difficult to tweak. As a result, the new Frost has a more streamlined feel to it.

relieves concerns over wasting Killing Machine, making it easier to pick up the spec and understand how to play it without getting bogged down in a counterintuitive rotation. Here are the most significant changes that will be immediately noticeable:

taking their place as the primary AoE buttons.

no longer causes Obliterate to cleave. Instead, it now buffs Frostscythe when

is active. Unholy Ground is also gone, so we have no reason to use

rotationally.

has been entirely reworked into a medium cooldown off-GCD ability that we weave into the rotation. It now provides a

proc and Runic Power to give us an on-demand tool to control our rotation.

triggers from Frost Strike and Glacial Advance now. This change breaks up a toxic loop where Obliterate would proc Rime, but it was more important to Obliterate again to spend

than to ensure that the Rime proc was not wasted.
冰龙吐息
no longer continuously drains Runic Power and is on a 90-second cooldown. It starts with an 8-second base duration, which extends every time we consume

or

. The gameplay feels like the previous version of the spell, but it is now decoupled from our Runic Power economy.
冰霜巨龙之怒
now has a 90-second cooldown and stuns enemies it hits. has less of a talent tax to pay now; however, for Frostwyrm's Fury is taken more for an AoE stun than for its raw damage, which is now relatively low.

Frost Death Knight Hero Talents: Deathbringer and Rider of the Apocalypse
encompasses unleashing bursts of direct damage through stacking

, making every cooldown phase strong.

Alternatively, for those who want to take on the title of Deathlord, Rider of the Apocalypse is available to summon the Four Horsemen to swarm their foes. This tree adds no buttons but requires taking
冰霜巨龙之怒
to activate

provides fantastic mobility, letting us continue to attack from horseback! Rider of the Apocalypse has little impact on the rotation and functions more as a series of passives that buff the player.
The best Hero Talent for a situation will depend on which of those two talents is stronger, given that they are opposed in their design. Deathbringer excels when the encounter suits frequent cooldown phases, particularly when adds are timed to spawn close to 45 seconds apart. Rider of the Apocalypse excels when high mobility is absolutely necessary or when big spikes of damage are needed every 90 seconds. It also rules open-world content and leveling, where the mobility from

is more important than raw throughput.

. Having a priority list means that all actions should be used in an ordered list of highest value from top to bottom, with you needing to judge your current state throughout an encounter with some predictions. It follows 3 key rules:

Frost has two resources, Runes and Runic Power, which co-exist within a positive feedback loop of one another. Spending Runes builds Runic Power, and spending Runic Power restores Runes through

. By spending both without waste, we can keep them in balance and ensure we can always cast something. Neglecting a resource can result in downtime due to insufficient resources.

Gearing a Frost Death Knight in
As a Frost Death Knight, a general stat priority of
Mastery >= Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility
is best. This stat priority does outweigh the value of
Strength
currently, though the value of item level upgrades still tends to pull ahead of perfectly itemized pieces. We also always recommended using

What Professions are Best for Frost Death Knight?
Compared to previous expansions, professions in provide minimal benefits towards the performance of your spec. This means that Frost Death Knight players can choose any profession according to personal preference. You might consider
Blacksmithing
to craft your own armor, as many profession items can be very close to your
Best in Slot gear
. On the other hand, you may opt for Alchemy to craft consumables or Enchanting to enchant gear without relying on the Auction House.

What Race is Best for Frost Death Knight?
While there are multiple racial options available to Death Knights, it's usually the case that the difference between the performance benefits granted by different racial attributes is minor. As such, it's generally recommended to pick your race based on aesthetic preferences or to go for a specific form of utility that you desire. If you're still intent on min-maxing, there are a few options depending on your goal:
Horde
: Mag'har Orc is the best choice for the powerful cooldown it gives in

Legion Frost DK was much better then is in BfA T-T

Why force bos on us? I don't like bos it's slow it's cumbersome and restricts movement. Float like a butter fly sting like a bee that's how frost dk used to be we could dance around the enemy with our obliteration build or move on to another.
Bos is sooooo limiting once you pop it you can't move its awful, but saying that some people like it so instead of making bos the only go to build how about giving us an obliteration build too.

While using a 2-hander engraved with Fallen Crusader, Glacial Advance still does apply Razorice. Possibly 2H specific? But you don't necessarily need the runeforge applied.

yes Frost Death Knight needs a little 2% bump in damage using Two handed Weapons. I would go about it in another way. I would add it to the obliterate ability explicitly.

You should correct the races for DK. Void Elf is on the Alliance side, not Horde.

The weakness stated as:
"Target-Switching - Due to long set-up and ramp-up times for our single target damage, we have trouble changing targets on the fly."
Unholy DK's yeah I agree but as Frost what build up? only thing that comes to mind is rune of razorice debuff but that is passive anyway, I don't see why I wouldn't be able to "change targets on the fly"
