If you aren't picking every possible pocket yet, you should be. Yes, picking pockets adds a second to each target you'd much rather be Cheap Shotting or Ambushing, but trust me, those coins add up! I will sometimes grind for a couple of hours and not pick any pockets just to maximize my experience point gain, but, in the end, I always miss out on that "2s x 400 kills... aww, man, I could've had another 8G!"

Picking Pockets is also a must to improve your Lockpicking and Poison skills, as you will sometimes find Junkboxes (to unlock) that contain poison reagents!

This skill is essential, insanely usefull, and fun. To not use this is like a mage not using blink. It's awesome.. also an insane help to poison reagents such as blinding powder.

Macro it with Cheap Shot for quick painless cash.

/cast Pickpocket
/stopcasting
/cast Cheap Shot
you can switch Cheap Shot with whatever you wish, it only works while blizzards autoloot is on.

I don't know about anyone else but it seems the above macro causes me to only loot the first item on the window (usually the money).

I've determined the best course of action is the following macro:

/castsequence reset=combat Pick Pocket,

This way, it will cast pick pocket when you click on the button once, and your intended skill when you click on it again. This sequence is reset after you leave combat. This only works if the target is valid for Pick Pocket.

Some lovely updates as of 2.1.0 that might want to be noted:
-Since sap will no longer break stealth, you no longer have any excuse not to pickpocket mobs. >:p
~~-The drop rate of blinding powder in junkboxes is increased even further; I've got 4 or 5 stacks of extra powder in my bank for all the stuff I'm getting.~~
-You have almost the same chance getting a gemstone from boxes/direct pocketing as you do mining against higher level mobs (almost always an Aquamarine/Blood Garnet)
-POTIONS AND FOOD! (nearly forgot this one) I can rely on picking up a lv 55 potion from 65-ish mobs regularly. You can get a potion or food roughly 7-11 levels lower than the mob you loot something around 1 in 8 tries. Very handy if you're combat spec and use potions as an 'oh shi-' tactic.
-If you dont pickpocket, you're missing out on a huge amount of awesome flavor items! The raw cash, mats, and vendorables from pickpocketing are undisputably a handy bonus to your gold intake.

A mob takes abit under 10min to respawn their pocketstuff if you pick pocket them but don't kill them.

To allow for "safe" pick-pocketing, I always put a distract in front of the humanoid I am going to pick pocket. This immobilizes them allowing for a more risk-free stealing experience. And also sets up for the subsequent ambush attack very nicely. :)

Are you left or right clicking? right makes you go into auto attack, left selects em. if the little pic of your dagger(should be first abillity) is flashing red, your are attacking, click to to stop, gotta hate that =)

It is rare to steal the really good items. I don't see what some of you are complaining about though. It takes 2 seconds to pickpocket a humanoid and even if it's very little it's still something and it adds up after a while as someone said earlier. It is worth it and some things are fairly valuable even if you sell the items to a vendor. You need to pick pocket higher level guys to get the really good stuff, generally, but still. I hate all the people who complain about anything and everything on this site. DEAL WITH IT!

If you press Shift as you right-click to loot a dead body, you pick up everything. Is there an equivalent quick-loot for pickpocketed items? I've sometimes had mobs turn into me as I'm clicking each item in the loot box, so I was hoping there was an auto-loot for pickpocketed items, or maybe a macro?

If you think it takes too long to pick pockets, you're missing out. I effectively double my cash take for each mob by picking their pockets before killing them. My rogue earns far more gold than any of my alts.

Just a note that things that are alot higher then you are pickpocketable if they are nuetral. but its like a 1/50 chance. i learned this the hard way by taking my lvl 6 rogue to desolace to try to loot the centaurs :)

a note, it is not only humanoids, it can be anything with pockets, ofcourse only some humanoids and a few undead has pockets.
so it is Not all humanoids or only humanoids.
and btw, killermonkey are you sure that your friend didn't lie? pickpocket form gurads and civile is immpossible, and you can't pickpocket someone from your own faction.

So if I declare war on any faction, I can pickpocket them?

Does this mean that they will attack me on sight if I am neutral (and at war) with them?

no when you declare war on a faction and you are neutral it gives you the ability to attack them but they dont attack you on sight

I bumped my skill to around 175 in Tarren Mill in (forgive me if I don't spell this correctly) Durnholde Keep, then on to the Wetlands in the swamps along the coast near the Ally town.

I went to Tanaris and attempted to get higher around the pirate town. All told I went up to around 216 at this time, but the locked boxes are 220 or higher so I am still using the pick pocket technique. I would be done with this, but the Ally seem to enjoy killing the Horde in swarms and then rezz sitting like little children. I can't imagine anything more boring then just sitting on a body that I've already killed. But enough of that.

You will get a quest at level 50 to pick pocket the green swamp things which are around level 53 I think. I am probably spelling it wrong, but the quest is in Azshara. This is a hard quest IMO because they can see you if you try to stealth from the front. Again, just IMO.

I have used pick pocket since I received it and man does the gold add up along with the Superior Healing Potions from higher levels. You also receive poisons which can save you when you buy to brew.

Magram and Gelkis centaur(southwest/southeast Desolace) are neutral and can be pilfered from. They won't attack unless you do, so rob them!

Just an update on this. Everything here is true. The best fun IS pickpocketing, sapping or ambushing, killing and collecting a second time. The exception is that you CAN pickpocket targets while in combat.

In what i feel is true "rogue" style, I like to rollow hunting groups and pickpocet their targets while they're occupied with combat. Every once in a while I'll assist if the group gets into trouble? Slimy? Sure...but hey that's what the certificat of thievery is all about, right? ::grin::

So for kicks, and safety when youre a noobie rogue, try pickpocketing while some brute is getting a whomping from a high'level pally.

useful thing while killing mobs with autoloot on(in the interface menu)

you can replace Cheap Shot with Ambush or Garrote or w/e. but this'll instantly pick your targets pocket if it can, and then cast whichever opener you want. good for the forgetful types, or teh lazy ones. if your server has frequent loot lag(server lag) don't use this macro, it'll get you killed.

3) items used for jewelcrafting
4) powders used by rogues for blind and vanish
5) items used by rogues used for poisons
6) recipes (last one my friend got was +7 stamina on bracer enchantment scroll)
7) money money money
8) gray items being sold for a decent amount of money to vendors
9) even blue items that comes out from boxes you loot via pick pocket (last found by my friend was a lvl 51 blue weapon)
10) boxes you use for improving open lock...

pick pocket is really unused and its a great boost to your money. the best way to use it is to combine it with your openers via macros. becuase im maces i use 3 openers depending on circumstance (garrote, cheap shot or sap)

so i made 3 macros using the same icons as the original ability, but added in pick pocket before the ability is executed:

Cheap Shot

/cast Pick Pocket
/stopcasting

/cast Cheap Shot

obviously just change the name of the ability accordingly (ambush etc)...

Note: for this to work you must have the auto loot option in interface options selected, or you wont loot what you pick pocket when u attack the mob and the loot window will close because you are in combat. this also means now when u open chests etc it will auto loot the contents. unless you press shift to stop doing so. so remember that when u unlock a chest in an instance!

Here's how I set up my pickpocket.
#1: turn on your auto loot option
#2: bind the pickpocket key to your mouse scroll button

By doing this, you simply press your wheel button to pickpocket and auto loot, and then your preferred opener. You can pickpocket many mobs very quiclky with out attacking.
In my mid to high 20's i would often pickpocket EVERY mob in Stockades in under 10 minutes flat, filling my bags entirely with lock boxes, watches, and other junk. At around level 49 i started doing this to mobs in Zul'Farrack. GREAT money here, found a lot of good green items and gems as well, and many mobs don't move.
5 pts in MOD and Camo really helps, and being a NELF.

I've been pickpocketing a bit and once out of like 1000 times i auto looted when picking. Just like when you look a corpse holding shift. Anyway I couldn't reproduce this happening anyone know how to do this everytime?

I am a new lvl 10 rogue and I am trying to pick pocket that Syan guy and I get into stealth mode I right click on him and she starts to attack him, I left click same thing. if I click on my bag it says invalid target. What am I doing wrong?

New to rogue....probably a dumb question but....how do I pickpocket? When I try to do the skill I get a message that I need to be stealthed......okay I stealth and sneak up on something (humanoid) and all my hot keys disappear! And they don't reappear until i cancel stealth. It's probably something mundane that I'm missing.....
