Welcome to Wowhead's DPS Rogue Rotation & Abilities Guide, updated for WoW Classic. In this guide, you will learn how to minmax the abilities of your Rogue for both single target and AoE scenarios. We will also go in-depth on all Rogue abilities, Rogue cooldowns, Rogue procs, everything to teach you how to make the most from them, in order to be more efficient and effective in dungeons and raids.
Besides individual strengths, this guide goes over how it all connects and how to use all Rogue abilities in combat, both in Dungeons and Raid scenarios, so you can reach the peak performance with your Rogue, enabling you to use all tools from your kit.

PvE Rotation
Before going through any PvE rotation, it is important to ensure your Rogue is properly buffed, which is covered in both the Consumables Guide and the World Buffs Guide. Rogues have access to Poisons and both

are very strong. Each weapon can only have one temporary weapon enhancement at a time, so it is good to pick the best one.
For Horde rogues, you may have access to a

. If you do, you should always use it and this will be your mainhand temporary enchant. If you don't have access to

, your decision will be the same as an alliance rogue.
For Alliance rogues, you will choose between

is used when your target is immune to poisons like most of the fire elementals in

For the offhand temporary enhancement, the decision is the same for both Alliance and Horde rogues:

Combat Swords
As
Combat Swords
, your primary focus is maintaining

. With the easy combo point generation from

, you will sometimes have excess combo points and plenty of duration left on

- this is the time to use

On a single-target encounter you should almost always open with a
邪恶攻击
and then a 1 point

to get the super powerful haste buff applied as quickly as possible. Be sure you never let
切割
drop throughout the encounter - that is your #1 priority and most important damaging ability. Throughout a longer encounter, it is generally preferable to use higher combo point values of
切割
to maintain the buff as these are the most efficient.
Dealing damage in multi-target situations is all about maximizing your
剑刃乱舞
usage. For longer fights that allow plenty of setup time, you will ideally want to have over 15 seconds remaining on
切割
and a nearly full energy bar when you press
剑刃乱舞
. Then be sure to use every other cooldown you have available during the
剑刃乱舞
-
冲动
,

, trinkets like

. Using these all during a two-target

means you are getting

value from those other cooldowns, which is very very good!
For shorter fights most of the same logic applies - but you often will not want to wait for a perfect setup. On most quick multi-target trash pulls you should hit

as your first spell right as you start attacking, followed by

and then a 1 point

. Waiting for a more ideal setup often means the second mob will die before Blade Flurry expires, which wastes some of the insane power potential of the ability.
Combat Daggers
For Combat Daggers, much of the same information applies - just switching out
邪恶攻击
for

. The main difference is that the higher energy cost of
背刺
means you will generate fewer combo points compared to a swords rogue using
邪恶攻击
. As a result, you will very rarely be using
刺骨
and spend almost all of your combo points maintaining

. This may sound bad, but it really isn't - the damage per energy of
背刺
is much higher than that of
邪恶攻击
. The loss of
刺骨
damage is made up for by superior damage from your combo point builder,
背刺
.
Many of the concepts presented in this guide may seem fairly basic, but once a Rogue has an understanding of the Energy resource, as well as some of the Rogue mechanics such as Combo Points, there is a lot more depth to the Raiding environment for Rogues.
Learning Rogue Spells and Rogue Spell Ranks
Instead of having abilities passively grow in power as your character levels up, in Classic WoW each ability is split out into many ranks. That means that most Rogue abilities will require you to visit a Rogue Trainer in order to learn higher ranks as you level up. Some abilities even have special ranks, only learnable via special tomes found around the world.
As you level to 60 in Classic WoW, new abilities will unlock every two levels. In order to train them, you must visit a
Rogue Class Trainer
, usually located in a major city. In this rotation guide, when talking about abilities, it is usually implied that we’re talking about the max rank unless stated otherwise.
However, in our Classic WoW Spell database, you can browse all available ranks for Rogue abilities, seeing what level you can train each rank at, as well as how much damage each one does.

Abilities
Openers
潜行
Stealth is at the top of this list because it's required for an Opener to be used. One of the most iconic Abilities of the
潜行者
Class, Stealth allows the Rogue to sneak around, effectively invisible. Rogues will of course have to watch out for a Human's
感知
or be sure to slip into their
耳语长靴
!

Garrote is unfortunately one of the least used Openers in the Rogue toolkit. It really only has effectiveness against heavily armored targets, because Bleed damage (Which is what Garrote is, even though the tooltip doesn't explain it) ignore Armor values on the target. This is best used in PvP, versus a Warrior or Paladin, followed up by a 5 combo point

. In PvE Raids however, because Garrote takes up a Debuff slot, it is highly recommended Rogues do not use this ability.

(Requires Daggers)
Ambush can be absolutely devastating when it crits! Unfortunately, it's really only used in Seal Fate Daggers, or the far less common Combat Dagger spec. Because Ambush requires
潜行
, Rogues can't use it in PvE Boss fight situations, unless the Rogue first uses
消失
, which has a 5 minute cooldown. In PvP however, one could argue that Ambush is one of the most powerful Attacks a Rogue has!

Cheap Shot is why most classes hate fighting against a
潜行者
. This is the first step in what is known as a "Stun lock", putting the target of the Rogue's attack in a seemingly endless loop of Stuns and Disorients. Some can argue, the strongest thing about Cheap Shot is the fact that Cheap Shot awards 2 Combo Points, instead of the typical 1!

Sap almost requires all 3 points in the Subtlety Talent,

, to become truly effective. In PvE situations, a

can Sap a Humonoid target in a large group, effectively removing one enemy during a pull. Unfortunately, even with

, there is still a 10% chance the Rogue loses
潜行
after Sapping. In PvP, Sap allows the Rogue to fight multiple targets at once, Sapping one and killing the other.

(Talent in Subtlety)
Premeditation is the final Talent point in the Subtlety tree, requiring 30 points of investment. While not particularly as powerful as the final Talent in Combat,

, Premeditation does become more formidable when taking into account the fact that it is reset by

. Even taking that into consideration, Premeditation doesn't offer much in PvE or PvP.
Combo Point Generators
邪恶攻击
Sinister Strike, one of the very first Abilities a
潜行者
has at Level 1. This is a Rogue's bread and butter and likely going to be the most spammed ability by that Rogue, it would be ideal to have this on a comfortable keybind, like 2 or 3. After calculating in
强化邪恶攻击
from the Combat tree, Sinister Strike only costs 40 Energy. Allowing the Rogue to use it twice with a full energy bar, and a third time after a single Energy tick!

(Requires Daggers)
Backstab is considerably more powerful than
邪恶攻击
, but it costs 15 Energy more to cast. Backstab also requires a Dagger in the Main Hand, and for the
潜行者
to be positioned behind the target. Factoring in all of this, Backstab is still far superior to Sinister Strike, strictly comparing the two Abilities. Especially after taking into considering the potential for extra Combo Points with
封印命运
, a Talent from the Assassination Tree, Backstab is clearly better. Of course, this is all before realizing how powerful

is.

(Talent in Subtlety)
Hemorrhage should never be used in a PvE environment. Hemorrhage applies a Debuff to the target, and in Classic, bosses can only have 16 Debuffs at one time. This would strictly lower the Damage of the entire raid if a

were to bring Hemorrhage spec to a Raid. In general, Hemorrhage is used in a PvP spec, because of the low energy cost of the Ability, 35, this is a very efficient way to build Combo Points!

(Talent in Subtlety)
Ghostly Strike is a very situational Ability. Because of its 20 second Cooldown, it can't be spammed like a typical Combo Point Generator. It is also a Defensive Ability, giving the
潜行者
an increased chance to Dodge Melee Attacks. And in PvE, the Rogue should never be the one receiving attacks. In PvP, a Rogue doesn't want to be on the receiving end of Melee Attacks either, using
消失
,
致盲
, and Stun abilities to control the target, thus reducing the effectiveness of Ghostly Strike entirely. Even then, Ghostly Strike is valuable in the rare situations the Rogue is carrying the flag in Warsong Gulch!

Gouge is one of the absolute most useful Abilities a
潜行者
has. With
强化凿击
, the Gouge incapacitate will last a total of 5.5 Seconds. It takes 5 seconds for a
潜行者
to drop combat, allowing the Rogue to use
潜行
, without the need for
消失
! Gouge also has usefulness in the World, when a Rogue pulls an extra mob or doesn't want to deal with a creature in the wild, just Gouge them and keep on running!
Finishers
刺骨
Eviscerate is the other Ability a
潜行者
starts the game with, at Level 1. It's a great way to learn the Combo Point system, teaching the Rogue that
邪恶攻击
generates Combo Points and Eviscerate consumes them! One of the most interesting and unique things about Eviscerate and Rogues, in general, is that this Ability has flat damage dealt, meaning a Critical Strike 5-Point Eviscerate can one shot a target, regardless of the gear the Rogue is wearing. Which means, yes, even a naked Rogue can one shot a poorly geared Level 60 player if the Eviscerate Crits!

Slice and Dice is the most important Finisher for a Raiding

. With the talent

from the Assassination Tree, Slice and Dice will last a significant amount of time, increasing the number of Auto Attacks on the target, and boosting the Rogue's Damage by a large margin, especially after factoring in other Talents, such as

.

Rupture is similar to

, in that it also ignores Armor values because it is Bleed Damage (still not mentioned in the tooltip). As mentioned previously, using Garrote and Rupture on heavily armored targets is the recommendation and the most typical use of this Ability. If, however, the

is fighting another Rogue, it might be a good idea to apply a Damage over Time to the target, making it harder for the enemy Rogue to use
潜行
! In PvE Raids, Rupture is normally quite balanced with Eviscerate and because Rupture has some extra complications to it (debuff duration in order to deal its full damage), Eviscerate is just simpler to use.
破甲
Expose Armor is a great tool in PvP. Used on Cloth targets, a
潜行者
can reduce the enemy Armor to almost 0, effectively increasing the Rogue's damage by a noticeable amount. It is often used to "dump" extra Combo Points after using
致盲
. Expose Armor can be cast without starting the Auto Attack animation, requiring specific positioning. In PvE Raids Expose Armor will sometimes be used by rogues taking the Improved Expose Armor talent for the exceptional armor reduction this ability can provide to raid bosses.

Kidney Shot is the most powerful Stun Ability in the entire game. With a full 5 Combo Points, a
潜行者
can stun a target for a full 6 seconds. With only a measly 20 second Cooldown, Kidney Shot can never be put on Diminishing Returns from the same Rogue, unless of course that Rogue were to use

to Reset Kidney Shot before the DR timer runs out. In most PvE situations, Kidney Shot won't be necessary, unless of course the Raid needs to control

Cold Blood is such a powerful ability, because of how much

can Crit for! In PvE, it is mostly only used in Seal Fate Daggers, which is fine because the

can choose to use Cold Blood with their

, allowing for two combo points, or use it with Eviscerate when there are extra Combo Points on the target.

(Talent in Combat)
Adrenaline Rush is the final talent point in the Combat Tree and is a strong damage dealing cooldown. In a PvE Raid environment, Adrenaline Rush will increase the Energy gain of the Rogue, allowing for a massive burst in Combo Points and damage, because the Rogue can spam
邪恶攻击
on about every other Global Cooldown. With the extra Combo points, the Rogue can use multiple
刺骨
, as well as refreshing
切割
when necessary.

(Talent in Combat)
Blade Flurry is the strongest PvE damage dealing cooldown available for rogues - if there are two targets to hit with it. When multiple targets are close together and the Group needs to burn the targets down, it is best for the Rogue to use Blade Flurry in conjunction with
冲动
, allowing for high burst damage on multiple targets.
Defensive

Vanish is one of the most powerful Defensive Abilities in the game. Allowing a
潜行者
to escape from a lost fight or PvE encounter completely. It is also important to be aware of how Vanish will remove any movement impairing effects, such as

or

. Of course, Vanish can also be used Offensively, allowing the Rogue to cast another Opener ability, mid-battle! Lastly, Vanish will completely wipe any Threat the Rogue has on a Raid Boss, allowing Rogues to spam damage as much as they like, without much worry about Threat.

Blind is one of the strongest Crowd Control (CC) Abilities, allowing the
潜行者
to Disorient a target for 10 seconds. Any damage will break the effect, so be sure not to Blind a target with
绞喉
or
割裂
on them! Blind isn't that useful in a Raid environment, but it can be a powerful tool when out in the world dealing with creatures or enemy players!

Preparation, easily the most broken Talent a

has access to. Because of how long most Cooldowns a Rogue has access to, most of them are 5 minutes long, Preparation allows a Rogue to have a second

if you have a specific Talent Build!

Evasion has nearly no usefulness in a Raid situation, unless of course the main Tank has died and for whatever reason the

has gained Aggro! In which case, it's a really bad spot to be in! Out in the world however, Evasion is a great Ability to use in the case where the Rogue has accidentally pulled multiple mobs, or a

breaks

, or even when a

is Resisted (Yes, it can happen)!

(Talent in Combat)
Riposte is often picked up in Leveling builds, or very unique PvP builds, for dueling against other Melee classes. In general, most
潜行者
won't have access to a high Parry chance, so Rogues won't be able to activate Riposte as often as they'd like.

Feint is pretty much a useless Ability. Because
消失
wipes all Threat for the Rogue, Feint is mostly a waste of Energy in a PvE Raid environment. However, there are some particular uses for this ability in PvP. Feint doesn't start Auto Attack, allowing you to Feint a target even during
致盲
. If you happen to have a Chance on Hit item, such as
幻影之刃
or
平静
, you can Blind the target it, Feint them, and hope the Chance on Hit will proc from the 0 Damage Attack from Feint. This is a pretty rare situation, so don't count on it.
Utility

Pick Pocket is a great method for a
潜行者
to make some money. In Blackrock Depths, there are a ton of enemy humanoids who have pockets lined with Treasure. Rogue will often sneak through the entire dungeon, alone, pick pocketing every mob available, leaving with a small haul of Gold.

Distract is an extremely underrated ability. Out in the world, it has so many various uses and tricks, it could almost be a guide on its own. The most common use for it, is of course when a
潜行者
needs to sneak past mobs or get through a cave without being detected.
脚踢
Kick is one of the most important Abilities a
潜行者
has access to. In PvE Raids, there are often Bosses that players will encounter that can be interrupted during casts. It is often the Rogues who this responsibility is placed on, required the Rogues to work together to time their Kick in a sequence, keeping the Boss interrupted.
疾跑
Sprint could technically be classified as Offensive, Defensive, or even Utility, because of its various applications. Sprint can be used Offensively, allowing the
潜行者
to stay on top of their target, which might be trying to flee. It can be used Defensively when a Rogue might be trying to escape and run away from the target. Lastly, Sprint can be used as a Utility type ability, when a Rogue just wants to run from Point A to Point B faster.

Disarm Trap is extremely important in Blackwing Lair. In the Halls of Strife, there exists an area known as the "Suppression Room", where Suppression Devices apply an aura,

. Only

can disarm this device, deactivating the Suppression Aura for a short period of time. Without enough Rogues in the Raid, this can be a very difficult area for many Guilds.

Pick Lock is the most common way you will find a
潜行者
trying to make a few extra Gold. If the Rogue has trained

to a high enough level, Rogues will often advertise their Lock Box picking services in Trade Chat, offering to open the Lock Boxes for free, plus a small tip.
Debuffs in Classic WoW
Be mindful when using Rogue spells that apply debuffs on enemies that they may only have 16 debuffs on them at a time, including raid bosses. With this limitation, usually large raid groups will assign specific players to apply certain debuffs, while others refrain from using them. Oh god... the advice "don't bother with an opener". How about a garrote? And for Seal Fate? Never waste a CB on an Ambush. CB is ONLY for 5 PT Evis... Who wrote this?

I think you should add that
剑刃乱舞
gives an additional 20% attackspeed increase and is a very viable singletarget dps cooldown that should be used together with
冲动
if the fights has no add spawns and/or adds that need to be killed.

Combat dagger is probably the most powerful PvE spec early on. You should include it.
I tested it alot on private servers and on multiple simulators, beats SF and combat swords.
