Really looking forward to this skill, it will be so good in PvE. Will make tanking Easy mode, finally a nice warrior ability incoming. I hope it's going to work so well, so you can tank 2 targets at the same time without a problem with 3 charge abilities.

This macro puts you in Defensive Stance if you aren’t in it already, then checks to see if the target is friendly & if so casts Intervene. If you are targeting a mob, then it targets the target (your teammate) and casts Intervene.

As many have noticed, using Intervene can be quite tricky in crowded places, but in many cases might save you from a wipe. So here is a most excellent macro to help you guys out.
Intervene; Uses Targets Target if you have an enemy targeted, Target if your target is friendly, and gives you a mouse pointer if you have no target. Starts auto attack again after Intervene. Will also change stance if needed.

Just a useful little tip: When fighting Murmur in Shadow Labyrinths, it's useful to have a caster stand back so that you can use intervene to escape from his Sonic Boom spell.

Just some new info: Intervene had a small change in 2.1 so that it will now automatically pick your target's target for you if necessary, while keeping the current target selected. The excellent macro above is therefore no longer needed, as it is now default behaviour.
They also added a new animation on the person you intervene: A small shield above her head, much like the spell reflect one.
Lastly, I'd like to point out that intervene is NOT on the shared cooldown with charge and intercept (I had assumed it was until just recently). This is brilliant, as you can intercept whenever intervene is on cooldown, and even use intervene right after charging if something should go horribly wrong... :)

I am Main Tank on Gruul and i have our 3rd tank (the one who isn't taking Hurtful Strikes) use this on me whenever the cooldown is over. He soaks a hit from Gruul and saves me from getting overnuked.
Very nice ability for this kind of stuff.

Very nice skill to use on Zul'jin during Lynx phase. He does a nasty ability that attacks 12 or so times very quickly in succession, with the attacks getting stronger and stronger - a Intervene near the end of the attacks to absorb one of the strongest attacks is very nice for saving clothies and getting rage.

I didn't read everything so sorry if this has been said. But, in arena, seeing as alot of setups involve a rogue, use intervene on your healer and it will take the stun for you. Especially seeing as popular setups like Mage rogue and RMP 3v3 stunlock / focus fire the healer.

In WSG... once was quite a trip and really funny to see your Warrior Charge a target, then Intervene a friend just ahead, just to Intercept and catch up the flag carrier... it's almost a teleport XD

Last night I was in AV and hit my key binding for intervene while targetting Drek'thul, and oddly enough I actually charged at him. I'm not sure if the person he was targeting got the intervene buff.
Confirmed after doing eye of the storm. Intervened a blood elf paladin that had an alliance targeted, intervened him and ended up getting his stun spell.
Pretty awesome, wonder if it's a bug though.

Not that many people will see this, but an awesome trick in the arena is to intervene a blinded person and stay close to them, and it will redirect the sap to you. Great in Warrior/healer 2v2s.

I suggest instead of , in case you might be targetting friendly NPCs that are part of the encounter. Does nothing to the actual functionality, but prevents error messages for NPCs. Also, is redundant, as and the like imply that exists is true. See

Last, I'd use /startattack , again to prevent errors.
So:

This ability is somewhat awesome. Even untalented and without glyph it gives pretty lot of mobility ( in case your buddy is fighting something on range and you cannot charge it simply saves your intercept cooldown, or for protection warrior it saves diminishing returns for concussion blow as you won't stun target, but buff your buddy instead )
Another usage is linking with charge or intercept, as already mentioned above. With right positioning you can intercept far and not well visible targets ( eg. column running druid ) and result can be devastating. If you have Tactical Mastery play with this thing around as much as you can, it will definetly pay off.
Ofcourse don't forget about original usage of this ability - eating up one ranged/melee attack, two with glyph. Unlike mentioned above, this work on any ranged/melee attack, not only physical attacks. So you cannot eat fireball as it is spell, but it will eat Arcane Shot for example. You have to be at 10 yards from your friend though.
And ofcourse do not get confused by icon or protection tree. This does NOT require shield to be used ;).

The number of individual uses of this ability are almost without number but basically break down into a few catergories:
First:
You do not need to be prot to use intervene!
Dungeons:
---Mob your healer: Intervene, taunt.
---Random charge coming up? (e.g.
Gal'darah
): Intervene healer.
---Aggro drop coming up? (e.g.
Eck the Ferocious
): Intervene healer.
Raids:
---Same as above for dungeons.
---Off tanking? (or a suicidally brave dps): Intervene main tank - less damage on tank and you get a rage spike. Even better if you are specced into
Safeguard
(though you have to ask why....).
---Soft enrage? Intervene main tank.
---Hard Enraged...(!): Intervene... though it is probably all over.
PvP
---Intervene anyone in trouble: Absorbs the damage, saps, hunter shots, and much more.
---Got the warsong flag? Run up the other side of the map than normal and intervene
up
to your friend in the graveyard and leave the trailing enemy rather... stumped. You just disappear up a cliff.
--- Getting away from enemies (also a WSG flag charm) intervene a friend further up the field.

When offtanking and i find myself low on rage on a boss thats not aoe'ing I find it usefull to
Beserker Rage
then Intervene the mt for a large rage spike usually putting you at 100 rage
With the new buffs to prot and these rage spike you could call yourself prot dps when your offtanking

All this talk of intervening the MT is fine for the time being as threat is not an issue. Remember though, that Intervene lowers the target's total threat by 10%. In later tiers of raiding when threat will likely become more of an issue, that would be an extraordinarily bad idea.

You intercept an attack (be it ranged or melee) so the attack is redirected to you...
this means your intervene could possibly proc revenge, or a 10% dam engrage, making it even more usefull in pvp with the right specs
e.g.: shield block + glyphed and talented intervene your healer from a melee attacker + improved revenge =
almost garanteed a revenge (shield block) and the 10% engrage, with a good stun change, more powerfull shield slam (shield block again), and if the revenge did proc you can stun for another 5 secs with consussion blow making it an 8 second stun (or a trinket use)
Most burst openers don't see this comming all of the sudden especially not a pesky rogue or feral druid opening from stealth
if you have some (not all that) lucky procs and your intervened person goes offensive this has the potential to be a real turn tabler in arena, killing the killer, hunting the hunter etc etc etc
Btw grizlor-thank you for the blind advice, i find beserker rage and intervene on a very nice way to work around sap now

Here's something that hasn't been mentioned. You can use intervene to negate your own fall damage. Test it out. Place a party/raid member beneath you and fly up as high as you can, dismount in mid-air, cast your Bloodrage, and spam the crap outta that intervene until you've got a target in sight. Might get trickier as your fall speed accelerates, but for falls where you're just high enough to die and a bit higher than that, this is quite convenient.

There is many comments talking about its usage on the MT to help mitigate damage, and then theres a small handful of comments saying "what are you thinking? thats a bad idea with 10% threat drop".
As far as I know :
The addition of threat reduction was an unnanounced stealth change.
I was unable to find any patch note that ever indicated the change. Its perfectly normal to assume most people wont reread a tooltip that they are familiar with unless there is some reason to do so (like a patch note). If you can find the patch note, feel free to link it and downrank me. As someone who likes to read each patch notes page from top to bottom, since release, I figure its unlikely I'd miss something pertaining to my main's class. Addtionally, I looked through

just to be sure, and found nothing.

Intervene really is one of the most criminally underused warrior tanking abilities. In addition to the previously mentioned "saving healers or dps from getting 1-shotted if you lose aggro" and "saving the main tank from death when he's on low health if you're an offtank/suicidal dps" there are many other uses for this great ability.
As an offtank you can use it pretty much every time it's off cooldown on whoever is 2nd on the threat meter to increase the gap between the main tank and everyone else. This is especially useful on fights where tanks struggle with threat (like Hodir using one tank in frost resistance gear). This doesn't affect your prot dps by much, especially as you can charge back to the boss after intervening if you have the warbringer talent.
As a main tank you can often save yourself by using intervene as a way of avoiding damage. Obviously this only applies to certain fights (bad idea to use it like this with bosses that cleave for example), but personally I've saved myself like this many times. A recent example would be tanking Faerlina in a pug, the healing was a bit slack so I was having to pop cooldowns all over the place to survive her frenzy (pugs don't do mind controlling) so I found myself with no cooldowns left to pop and my health dropping rapidly, fortunately I managed to intervene someone at max range while I was on about 2k hp ready to get 1-shotted, giving time for the healers to top me as the boss was chasing after me.
So there are three main uses for this ability; intercepting melee hits, dropping threat by 10% and moving from A to B at high speed. Most people (warriors included) only think of this ability as a way of intercepting melee hits and ignore the other two uses. Don't make this mistake.

Please note that with the Warbringer changes in 3.3.2 Intervene will be the only A to B type move that will break roots and snares. You will no longer be able to use Charge or Intercept to do so.

Yo. Just thought I should mention how extremely useful Intervene is in the
Lich King-encounter
with
Safeguard
talented. Cast it on the MT whenever Soul Reaper is applied to him, and watch how you just rendered tank swapping unnecessary.
See my comment on the Safeguard-page for a couple of other uses.
But remember to use it with causion, and make sure your raids knows you're using it.

Ok... looks like this '30s cd' 'damage reduction skill+talent' has been nerfed (for tanks to use on tanks anyway). Due to the reduction of threat by 10%.
I guess we broke the camel's back when the entire world of (pro) warriors used the above strat to help tank better.

I think the greatest use of Intervene in PvE is far from the original intention, but it rocks for example in the Murmur encounter.
Our tank just did a macro to target me and cast intervene (I'm the healer) and zoom, he was instantly out of the blast range when Murmur started to charge for it.
My two cents is that in certain situations where you know what to except Intervene can really make things easier, mainly in moving the distance.
Also one can do a macro to gain the target of your target, and cast Intervene, resulting in easy mob following.

the ToT intervene macro is a life saver, period. i've found a lot of uses for it even in the first few hours of using it. before that i dreaded using it because sometimes id click the wrong person or hesitate too long. now when i lose aggro to anyone ranged, i am right there to get it back.

please delete your warrior if you think this skill is useless. i save the healer's or overagroing casters' butt at least 10 times(and probably prevent a party) each heroic run thanks to this lovely skill. seeing how fragile druid and priest healers are, saving those 1 hit and taunting back is extremely useful. I love intervene. whoever dev thought about it deserves a cookie. now do something about multi mob tanking for warriors pretty please? ty.

Very nice when your doing Moroes in Kara. Moroes does his vanish thing, tank uses this on the main healer, no chance for that healer to take the Garrote.

The eaten attack is nice, but too often I think the speed boost is overlooked. You rush the aggro, even ignoring snares, and have a better view/position for a quick taunt.
Originally, a quick assist-intervene-assist-taunt combo would snatch stuff back almost instantly, but it seems 2.1 changed intervene, so that simply casting it on a mob will defend the aggro if it's not you - it does it automatically, no changing targets required.

I agree that it can be used in pvp. Try using this when you think some rogue/druid is about to ambush/ravage your clothie, and trust me, it will really surprise attacker that instead of taking down half of clothie's health, he'll barely scratch you (i know that ambush isn't scratch even on plate, but it's way weaker)

Has anyone tried this in Kara to absorb one of the Big Bad Wolf's attacks on the "Red Riding Hood" debuffed runner?
I am wondering if this will take away one of his attacks. A lot of people in my guild are kinda slow on the reaction tip in this fight so I am brainstorming some new ideas for how to handle this encounter should we come up to it again.

...to start it off i've read that it can really help in the Gruul fight. When Gruul silences, the offtank can bite the bullet, intervene the main tank as soon as he/she can, and take a hit for the MT so the healers have a better chance of getting those first heals back to the MT in time once their silence wears off.

A Special Note About Intervene.
Intervene, when hit, will automatically Intervene your targets-target if the target is Hostile.
For example, if you loose aggro on a mob, you can simply hit Intervene and have it interview your targets-target.
Just a little side note that a lot of Warriors miss.
No need for macros, assists etc - as I've seen mentioned countless times.

I was thinking... say if a mage was casting a pyroblast at a nearby ally, is it possible to hit spell reflect and intervene your ally so that the spell hits you and bounces back and omgwtf blasts the mage back for a ridiculous amount of damage? or are spells not effected by intervene?

If you are fighting something and it attacks another target, the simplest way to use this is to hit the skill, then immediately hit your assist key, (default is F) it will throw the intervene at the friendly, and not take you off your target, as long as you pop the skill first. Paladins should know this, as their taunt works in the same way, assists a friendly instead of debuffs an enemy.

I've found this useful in my 2v2 team if there's a melee dps attacking my healer, intervene to my healer, absorb the next blow and then proceed to disarm the person.

exceptional for WSG in moving across the field as a flag carrier. Start off with a charge - zerker mode and an intercept - finally defensive mode and intervene to an ally. Ridiculously fast field movement considering that warriors don't have any regular speed boosters.

I was OT'ing At the time but i saved up rage and when he turned
someone into a Little Red riding hood, I intervened The person like 1sec after they got changed, because usualy people have a hard time in first split few seconds before they start running, it total i intervened like 7hits that fight, Saving a healer who had 3k hp after being hit once alrdy and a few dps
