Most fire mages open up on a polymorphed target with pyroblast followed by fire blast, but you can actually do more damage by adding a scorch before the fire blast. Since pyroblast takes a little while to travel to the target, scorch ends up hitting around the same time as the pyro, and then also the fire blast. This is just a handy little trick to get a little more frontload damage that I never even thought about until a mage friend of mine told me about it.

When you have attained the full Imp Scorch talent damage buff, do you only have to cast one Scorch every 15 sec to maintain the full buff?

評論來自 Karis

Scorch is a very useful spell and is wonderful especially at upper levels when mages start adding lots of +damage gear to their character. It becomes extremely efficent and wonderful dps for mana used.

Scorch is a much better spell than fireball as your main repeat spell, in raids, stacking 5 fire vunerabilities from scorch and then POM pyro'ing can result in an amazing amount of damage.

The best thing about Scorch is it's low casting time, it allows you much more freedom than if you were to use fireball, Most spells cast by mobs are 2 seconds long, meaning with scorch, you don't have to cancel your current spell before you counter them, whereas with fireball, you could have wasted a load of time casting half a fireball, not only that, but it gives you a much quicker response time to react to the what the enemy is doing, in PVP it also gives the enemy less chance to react to you! Counterspelling, kicking or reflecting a 1.5 second cast is much harder than a 3 second cast and with scorch, you can keep your distance by throwing in a blink or frost nova between casts, where if you had been using fireball, they would have reached you by that time.

Also, 'officially' 2 Scorch casts do not equal the same damage as 1 fireball but as these are two seperate spells you're practically DOUBLING your crit chance, aswell as Scorch's 3 point talent affecting ALL fire spells, increasing the damage from the PoM Pyro's and fire blasts you'll be throwing in there, where as spending 7 more talent points into fireball just to increase it's own damage.

Aswell as doubling your crit chance it's also less risky, if a scorch gets resisted, you've lost 1.5 seconds, if a fireball gets resisted, you've lost 3. if a scorch crits when you've got high aggro, you should be okay, if a fireball crits, you're screwed, also with spell reflection from warriors or bosses/mobs, if you have a scorch thrown in your face, you're okay, where a fireball would have done more damage to you.

All in all, Fireball only appears better if you're not a very good mage and just compare the dps, but closer inspection shows that scorch is a much better spell, aswell as scorch costing a lot less mana.

Does the added fire damage granted by scorch carry over into wand fire damage?

Scorch is an overlooked but useful tool while soloing, especially in the early/mid levels.

You'll often end up using Frost Nova during most solo leveling fights to give yourself a chance to gain distance and nuke some more. However, Frost Nova is extremely susceptible to being broken by direct damage attacks, so you usually won't see the full root duration once you start to renuke.

I have found that if I skip Fireball/Pyroblast/etc. and use Scorch instead, the tiny amounts of damage seem to be much less likely to break Frost Nova. In fact, it usually runs the full 8 seconds. This allows you to to Frost Nova, step just outside melee range, and spam Scorch with almost no fear.

If you're quick with your fingers & lucky with lag, you can get 5 Scorches in before the root expires. Alternatively, you can usually fire off 1 Fireball and break it immediately (sometimes I've gotten 2 Fireballs in, but very rarely).

Assume 700 spell damage (hey, we're still leveling), and let's just assume max ranks and some random talent points because, eh, I'm already looking at them in another tab:

Fireball: 889 + (1.15 * 700) = 1694 *ice shatters*, 425 mana
Scorch: * 5 = 3310, 900 mana, enemy is now taking +15% fire damage

So you do about twice the damage, and use about twice the mana, with Scorch. But it's all spent without being beaten on or having to take evasive manoeuvres. Note that this simple calculation doesn't take resistances into account, nor the fact that you're casting more spells and so increase the chance of a crit occurring, which triggers Ignite (if you're specced) and Ignite ticks have been know to have issues instabreaking Frost Nova. I probably also forgot a bunch of talents that could tweak the numbers.

Perhaps someone will come along and blow this apart with a set of charts and graphs soon, but in my experience, this works really well! :]

Combine this spell with the 2 talents from 4.0.1: Improved Scorch, then Firestarter, these talents make this spell incredibly powerful and very vital.

Competitive dps to Fireball for fire mages.

Will replace the fireball spell for Fire mages at 85 before tier 11 gear obtained..

and will be used almost as much as Fireball with tier 11..as spamming Fireball will get you oom very fast.

Plus: less cast time= more spells = more crits = more Hot Streak procs = more dps

isnt this spell useless when compared with fireblast?

評論來自 Thottbot

Thats what I thought until I watched Sorrow Hill 4. (link posted below) Scorch is a low mana cost, low cast time spell with considerable damage. If you include all the talents you put into it, It can be one of the most deadly spells there is.

Please watch this, its really worth it: http://www.warcraftmovies.com/movieview.php?id=1502

評論來自 Thottbot

I still dont think it is worth it, the damage is certainly not considerable, unless I am missing the point. Anyone explain?

評論來自 Thottbot

scorch x2 > fireball x1. or, how about... mob has 100 hp left. scorch kills in 1.5 sec. or, use it to pull with. or, lots of other uses.

評論來自 Thottbot

I think the shadow hill video makes it pretty clear. You can use scorch much more often, which gives you more crits, and with imp scorch you're doing a lot more fire damage. Also, if you're being attacked melee, it's going to take forever to cast a fireball.

評論來自 Thottbot

Scorch is, in my opinion...

One of our greatest spells in the arsenal. At level 60, with all of my +damage gear, I do about 375-400 damage on a normal hit with scorch.

400 damage for only 150 mana and a 1.5 second casting time.

Compare this to Arcane Missiles. I do 228 damage a missile. So 5 missiles = 1140 damage over 5 seconds for 595 mana. Let's see how this works over 15 seconds to better prepare the averages.

Scorch : 4,000 damage / 1,500 mana - per 15 secs

Arcane Missiles : 3,420 damage / 1,785 mana - per 15 secs

This is on average without bringing in to account critical hits and clearcasting.

10 casts of scorch will yield more clearcasts and therefore, cheaper costs than only 3 casts of Arcane Missiles.

As for critical hits, a properly specced fire mage has a greater chance to crit with scorch than an arcane mage can crit with arcane missiles. Also take into account that a critted arcane missile does an immediate 150% damage, while a scorch does 210% damage over 4 seconds.

If you want to see how this compares to fireballs, I usually do about 750-900 with all of my gear, I'll be generous and say a 850 average :

Fireball : 4,250 damage / 1,975 mana - per 15 seconds

This is assuming you have 3 second casting fireballs like a good fire mage should. Yes you do more damage, but the mana cost is greater and again you are casting fewer times which means fewer clearcasts. Plus, a properly scpecced fire mage will crit with scorch more often with the incinerate talent.

Fireball is still a great spell, it has a greater max range and makes better use of my +fire gear than the faster spells. But for mana economy and interuptability, scorch is the superior spell.

When fighting raids or in MC, I'll typically scorch until I get a clearcast and then throw out a free fireball or arcane missiles on the longer boss fights. Even with the amount of resists I can get in there, I still do more damage then most of our other mages.

For anybody who knows anything about playing mages knows you cant stand around while shooting spells. You will be hard pressed to outlast any other class in a blow for blow fight as mages have incedibly low health, armor, and cant heal. They need to use blink, COC, and frost nova to avoid being hit, period.

For those who believe fireball is the way to go are noobs. Fireball is nothing more than an initial strike or a good POM combo spell(but pyro is better for this of course). You cant stand around and wait for fireball to charge while a warrior is smashing your head in or when you are trying to stay between a hunters melee/missle zone. Scorch is fast cast, mana efficient, and hard to interrupt, giving a mage mobility to survive.

And yes fireblast is a good spell as well, but it is a nuke so you use it with scorch when it is on cooldown. You dont just stand around while fireblast is on cooldown.

To those who think its better to spam Arcane Missles are foolish as well as they also must stand in place while channeling and will find themselves very low on mana (although it works great vs. other mages since they dont have any ward against arcane dmg. It is also perfect against running opponents as it will continue to cast even when they are well out of your range). All in all you will find scorch to save your life and mana if you choose to use it.

I was a fireball mage on RP server.
Fireball is amazing for farmer. Long range and don't have to move. If your on a pvp server or want to pvp, scorch seems the way.

I have mostly + crit gear (archmage robe, glove of spell mastery, ogre king stuff).

But fireball was in 840/1030 range without crit.
Would say a 900dmg avg, fireball is dmg crazy.

For now, I love scorch as it proc stunt more then fireball, invaluable against caster. It crit more too, but a critical scorch isn't as impressive as a fireball crit. Only have scorch rank 2 yet on my build but again, it proc, you get crit, clearcast or stunt every often as you cast a lot of 1.5 spell.

New question, how many point do you put in improved fire blast to get a good timing with scorch ? I used to put 1 point only with fireball, what is the best with scorch, none or 1 point ?

評論來自 Thottbot

Remember that a fire mage will have the chance to stun with fire spells (impact talent). So you have 2 chances to stun with scorch and only 1 chance with fireball. Again when fighting a caster the double chance to stun is important because it will stop casting.

Scorch beats fireball.

評論來自 Thottbot

Also, improved scorch makes this spell even better, by decreasing the mobs resistance to fire damage. Low mana, quick cast, can increase in damage over time as your cast it, just all around one of the best spells in a pyro mages (or any other)arsenal.

評論來自 Thottbot

Wait, so when should I actually use this spell?

評論來自 Thottbot

Sorry, but do any of u know about the talent called "Burningsoul"!

One word is enough: LOL!

評論來自 Thottbot

scorch is good, it a Mage's "dagger": it has a fast atk speed so it benefits more from +spell damage. think abnout it, +145 spell damage once every 2.5 seconds casting fireball for 15 seconds only adds 1015 damage, but when casting scorch you add 1450 damage, and theres a talent to make it crit like crazy. My favorite benefit though is that it leaves no trail, while enemys can tell where a fireball comes from a scorch they can't, and its not that hard for a gnome to hide in some bushes and cast this a good 4 times before they could find him.

problem with it though is that you lose the scariness of a mage. any guy getting hit by a 700 damage fireball is gonna think twice about going after that mage, just as any mage getting hit for a 400 damage 2h swing is gonna try and get the hell away from the melee class. fear is useful, cause mages have THE best chasing spells in the game, once they wanna get away, don't let em. answer is to simply open up with fireball, and sheep any1 who actaully notices you casting (another advantage, no burning to interrupt sheep)

Ok in pve i pull mob pyroblast then this a few times fire blast mob is very close to me frost nova back off fireball then this a few time :P

評論來自 Thottbot

Scorch is really useful if you have Improved Scorch. Spam it a couple times then you can deal a lot more damage, but I'd never rely on Scorch for main damage.

評論來自 Thottbot

So lets say your armor was +10 dmg...
does that mean that every scorch you do you add 10 damage to it, and every fireball you do, it adds 10 dmg too, or does the 10 mean a percentage?

Edit

It is a percentage, the percent is 1.5/3.5 so 100 spell damage will add 100x(1.5/3.5)

評論來自 Thottbot

anybody who knows anything about pvp knows that long casts are bad, they open you up to silence, counterspell, kick, pummel spell lock etc. this is a way to maximize damage while still having mobility and lessening the chance of getting interupted

評論來自 Thottbot

u sed that any spell w/ casting time less than 3.5 doesn't get full benefit of +dmg rite? wut happens if ur fire spec and have the talent that shortens the casting time of fire ball? do u still get full benefit, or would u get the benefit of any other 3 sec cast?

評論來自 Thottbot

This spell is amazing. Seriously. Fireball sucks ass compared to this. My fireball does about 190-250 at my level, where as scorch does about 100-130. I can use two and a half scorches per fireball, so that means that in the same time as a fireball I can do about 300 damage. Plus, it stacks a nice damage bonus which sets up fireblast, CoC, blink and repeat. Fireball is the one that is obsolete, I don't even use it and I'm fire spec. Mybe when it's empowered, but currently it's fail.

評論來自 Thottbot

Actually it doesnt matter which spell ur using, because if you have 100 spell damage then every 3.5 seconds you get 100 more damage (unless of course you talented fireball then you get approximately 16.5 more damage or something per 3.5 seconds) SO...it more or less balances itself out since scorch will crit more (but does anyone know if it's a good idea to use scorch with combustion?)

評論來自 Thottbot

more clear casting and impact procs with less interruptability and increased mobility makes scorch the superior choice to fireball in pvp

評論來自 Thottbot

Scorch doesn't have a missile animation, making it better for attacking behind obstacles without giving away your location like Fireballs do. This is in pvp of course.

評論來自 Thottbot

Scorch is a great spell but its not the only one that you should use, it all depends on what your doing.

I am not including AoE spells because Scorch is almost useless for crowds,
And LVL +60 spells, if you don't now how to be a mage by then look for a other game, Packman maybe? :D

PvE
Single mob: Pyro > fireball > fire blast > frost nova > pyro > multiple Scorch > finish whit, fire blast, blast wave ore Arcane Explosion.
If you have dragon breath ore any instance spells that are cooled down u use them in between.

Crowd: useless except maybe the last of the mob.

Instance

Get OMEN treathmeter a must have, from example www.curse.com a must have.
ps. Tank must have OMEN to, for it to work.

Boss: let tank get agro and start of whit 2~3 scorches so you don't get agro from tank and build up the scorch stack, then a fire blast and 2 more scorches so you have stacked up 5 scorches.
Then go over to mixing fire ball's and pyro's because the 5 scorch stack also increases the the dmg they do, scorch last 30 sec on target.

The mixing of fire ball and pyro you do because if you only use fire ball got a extra dmg over 8sec and it doesnt stack.
So by casting a spell before the extra dmg is done will cut a part of and be reset by the new dmg.

Most dmg i do against a boss is this way:
Wait on agro build up from tank otherwise you wipe.
3x scorch > fire ball > fire blast > scorch > fire ball > fire blast > (x) > scorch > fire ball > fire blast > pyro > fire blast > repeat from (x)

If you dont think you get a other pyro in be for he go's down do a extra fire ball and otherwise spam scorch

If you start to get to mouths agro just only use scorch till your agro go's down again ore just stop casting at all just keep a eye on the scorch cool down on target.

I would say get also damge meter from curse (recount is a good one) and try out how mouths dmg you do the most and try different ways see whats is the best.

PvP
Hard to say whats best but scorch is a great spell for it,
But i would say look at what other PvP players do in fire mage films on the net.

Like i was saying its a great spell but for shoure not the only one
