Demon Chain is outside (stop searching the lovely little buildings :) ) on a small hill in Thundermar next to the corpse of Narkrall Rakeclaw.

After you pick up the chain, an alliance soldier will spawn. If you don't feel like fighting, hit your air mount right away.

type /target Narkrall Rakeclaw and set raid target icon to icon of your wish, fly over the houses and you'll spot him pretty fast.

OMG! Please save yourself some time when you go to do this quest. It's simple but can be frustrating if you go searching the houses and dens for the item. The Demon Chain is not in a building at all, in fact, you never even have to see the supposed chaos mentioned in the quest description. The Demon chain is up on a mound near Narkrall's dead body; behind the little town.

Enable 'Target' at the minimap search-feature. (Magnifying Glass) and type /target Narkrall Rakeclaw. You should now be able to see his location on the minimap.

Something interesting: Nakrall Rakeclaw is not "dead" at the moment you encounter him, if you target him you will see that he has 1 hp remaining.

Basically after you retrieve the demon chain, you leave him to his death

Yes /loc 49.10, 28.20 did the job. The problem with this quest is that the Red medalion on the ground is nothing alike the chain on the quest icon. And you're thinking that you should fight him for if. It just lies there making you mad you haven't looked for it on the .... hill.

Go to Thundermar, then search for a building that has no walls (it's the only one in Thundermar...at that location, anyway). The corpse is on the hill behind that house (49,28). You won't have to fight him, but you might get aggroed by one of the Defenders that's there when you pick up the chain.

The actual quest text is misleading, as it makes you think that you have to kill someone waiting for a fight in that area.

The Demon Chain is all that remains of the Dragon Soul (aka the Demon Soul), a seemingly-harmless golden disc that Neltharion the Earth-Warder created ten-thousand years ago, before he became known as Deathwing the Destroyer. Neltharion told the other Dragon Aspects that it was to be a weapon against the demons, and so he had every single dragon except for himself put part of their life energy into it. This gave the Dragon Soul the ability to control dragons, and also filled it with enough magic to kill hundreds of soldiers with a single magic blast.

Neltharion used the Dragon Soul to kill hundreds of demons in the War of the Ancients, but then turned on the night elves and attacked them as well. When Malygos attempted to destroy it, Neltharion killed nearly all of the blue dragons, rendering them almost extinct. The pure power of the Dragon Soul tore Neltharion's body apart, and he had to have metal plates bolted on to keep him together.

The Burning Legion attempted to use the Dragon Soul to open a portal over the Well of Eternity for Sargeras. The Old Gods wanted this portal open as it would release them from their prisons. The Stormrage brothers, Malfurion and Illidan, used the Dragon Soul's power to destroy the portal, sundering the world and forming the Maelstrom in the Well's place. Malfurion hid the Soul away.

It was found thousands of years later by the Dragonmaw chieftain, Zuluhed the Whacked. The orc Nekros Skullcrusher used it to control the red dragons in the Second War, but it was ultimately destroyed by the mage Rhonin, with the help of Vereesa, Falstad, and Korialstrasz.

Shortly before Wrath of the Lich King, Deathwing's mate Sinestra used the fragments of the destroyed Dragon Soul to transfer the life force of the first twilight dragon, Zzeraku, into unhatched eggs and transform them into twilights as well. Deathwing was the one who gave the idea to Sintharia, as preparation for the army he would need in Cataclysm. Korialstrasz destroyed what little remained of the Soul by throwing the indestructible cube Balacgos's Bane at it, eliminating both.

It seems that the Dragonmaw clan entered the ruins of Grim Batol and gathered up the chain that was once attached to the Dragon Soul. They now use the dragon-controlling power of the artifact for themselves.

[Narkrall revealed to me the secret of his influence over the drakes in this area. I thought the Demon Chain was a myth, but he's had it all along.

And now the fool is about to lose it!

His life is meaningless to me but the Dragonmaw can't afford to lose that artifact. Follow him north, up to Thundermar. The city will be in chaos, so you may be able to land undetected. Return to me with the Demon Chain, even if you have to remove it from Narkrall's corpse.
