You must kill Thiassi the Lightning Bringer in order to summon Grand Necrolord Antiok.
The only way to kill Thiassi on your own is to use Flame Fury until it runs out, then Engulfing Flame until Flame Fury is off CD. Right after he dies Antiok will spawn and you must dismount and kill him without the dragon or you will just make him despawn.
You can even help ally complete the quest if you wish, when Antiok dies he drops his scythe on the ground and anyone may loot it.

Save this quest, as of right now you can use the drake to fly around Dragonblight and make questing a little faster. Beware tho, sometimes he gets a little retarded and goes at epic ground speed maybe a little slower. To remedy this I just try jumping a few times to get it going. Also, this one is kinda important, sometimes when you dismount you don't get a parachute! So just be careful.

Just passing by this area and there happened to be a cobalt node down there with the scavengers... Here's a real pro tip, unless you're 75+ , don't bother killing these on the ground...their bone attack hits way too often and they seem to chain agro to you.

The Wastes Scavenger are all around the diggin site at 54,34.
Then go on the top of the hill behind the site at 54.38,31.25 and kill the giant called Thiassi the Lightning Bringer. After his death Grand Necrolord Antiok will appear, dismount, kill him and loot the Scythe of Antiok.

If you have a PvP trinket, I highly recommend you equip it before killing Anitok. He has a 10 second long fear and a 10 second long deathcoil and hits for 1000+ with his shadowbolts. Being able to trinket out of the fears will help a lot.

Part of the Horde questline for the Wrath Gate event. This quest line is very long and spans the entire length of Dragonblight. Quite honestly, I consider this one of the most important quest lines (thus far) in Wrath. A must-do for any hordeling. :)

In quite a few of these chains there are optional prequests. I will not list these, despite them being in the quest series list, because they are just that: Optional. I will list the LATEST quest available that will start the chain, or the one most likely to pick up while completing other parts of this chain.

Additionally, these quests are Horde Only. I, unfortunately, do not have an Alliance character on the Beta, so I do not have access to any alliance quests. Sorry!

Step names are purely flavor. They generalize what that part of the chain leads up to/is about.

I highly urge everyone to read the quest text. This quest line is quite possibly one of the most epic in Warcraft history and is highly worth the time. Lore lovers and haters alike should enjoy them.

After killing the ghouls you must kill Thiassi The Lightning Bringer. Once he is dead, the Grand Necrolord Antiok will dismount him and you will also auto-dismount to kill him the old fashioned way. He drops the Scythe you need.

He is found at the very top of a hill at 54, 31

Just completed this.
Here's how:
1. logged out and disabled addons
2. logged on, summoned dragon and away to Galakrond's Rest
3. Flame Fury (# 1) was the only thing that would burn the Scavengers down to DEAD; Engulfing Fireball (# 2) didn't work, it would just burn the Scavengers down to 1hp and not kill them...
Flame Fury does not have the same right click targeting as Engulfing Fireball does.
I needed to get the mobs maybe 30 yards underneath me and a little in front and that seemed to do it. No targeting necessary.
4. Engulfing Fireball seemed to work fine on Thiassi, burned him down to dead np, hopped off and killed Grand Necrolord Antiok easy as pie, although the poster who suggested equipping your PvP trinket had it right.

All this dismissing and logging out stuff is just a placebo. Well, maybe not the dismissing part. I had the "got them to 1 and then they don't die" problem, as a shaman, obviously not a pet class.

The way I fixed it was flying much lower so that my attacks agro'd them. After that I had no problem. You can't just stay high and bombard them because they don't agro to you.

Just an FYI, you don't have to be the one to actually kill Antiok. Once he is killed the scythe will drop and anyone can loot.

I just realized this, but make sure you're killing mobs inside the dig site, not the surrounding area. For the longest time I was trying to kill the scavengers who were in the smaller bone areas around there, and I couldn't kill them. Then I went into the big dig site, and suddenly I was able to kill everything and finish the quest :P

ok im a rogue and this quest is also bugged for me, ive logged out disabled all my add-ons and then logged back in and the Wastes Scavengers health stays at 1/9940 and wont die which means i cant finish the quest properly. I have killed a few but the rest wont die :S but thats mainly because i went on the ground to kill them.. but yes it does take the biscuit

Just to clarify some things:

the Waste Scavengers are IN the main dig site. Don't bother with the scourge in the smaller digs around Galakrond's Rest, they don't do anything for you.

The quest is buggy. Though you often don't see any damage bubbles, the three abilities are doing something, though it works best "up close and personal". Don't even bother killing them from afar, most of the time they don't seem to die.

This quest was bugged for me. My Dragon couldn't use any of his abilities on the Ghouls, although I wasn't lagging because I could dismount and fight off the dragon, and the Ghouls were still hitting me.

EDIT: I disabled all of my addons and the Dragon works now. If you're having a problem with it, it could be one of your addons. I had Fubar, Questhelper, Auctioneer, Runewatch, Bejeweled and Atlas on, I don't know which one of them is causing the problem though.

I just did this and disabling only the "Questhelper"-Addon while I have a lot of addons installed did the trick.
Getting aggro first works too but is less reliable and takes alot longer.

I reccomend trying to get this quest asap and not turning it in, you can use it as a flying mount for when doing most of the quests around the Dragon Wastes.
Saves alot of time compared to your normal mount.

I had to get the dragon close to the ground in order to gain credit for the kills. If you are too high it looks like you are killing them (kill numbers are being displayed) but when you get close to them and check their health they are still alive even though they have no health.

I have a hunter and I couldn't get this to work either. I found the best idea was to go down the bottom and kill them with the assistance of my pet. Took all of 5 minutes after spending 20 or so trying to get the quest to work properly.

Also, I couldn't loot the scythe at the end. However this quest was completed when I checked my log book so it would seem I didn't need to - very weird.

Another wierd glitch with this quest is that whenever I died I didn't ever end up at the spirit healer, I respawned alive and well in Wyrmrest Temple - also weird.

Acually this is a common bug when using any Vehicle in Wrath. It happened to me when doing Steamtank Surprise. I simply fixed it by abandoning the quest and relogging.

This quest has a bit of a confusing title. I think it should be renamed "On My Own". That's how I tackled this quest, anyways. Had to kill 30 hard-hitting ghouls on the ground, with no experience or loot to reward me.

The title led me to believe I'd be doing some fighting on the back of a dragon. Negative. Dragon is completely bugged, even after trying relogging several times, closing the game several times, turning off all addons, unmounting and remounting several times, and everything in between. Believe me, I tried every combination of posted suggestions over and over.

I was able to make my dragon eat a ghoul ONCE. I was also able to get him to use his #2 attack towards a ghoul once as well, however it didn't do a single point of damage to the ghoul. Luckily someone else was already killing Thiassi when I pulled up, otherwise there would have been no way for me to get the scythe. A rather broken quest, all in all.

I just did the quest as a level 71 and I hope I can help a bit. All the coordinates given are pretty much spot on. I had no trouble with the dragon controls appearing and working. Go low into the "pit" and aggro some workers. Use the cone (1) control to AOE the mobs. Spam the middle control (2) until no more damage numbers come floating off or no more quest kills appear on your quest tracker. If you get low on dragon health/mana, the easiest thing for me to do was to land on the road spiraling up the hill behind the pit. It's the one the elite is on you have to kill. Dismount after landing which will dismiss the dragon. No mobs pathed up the road while I was there. Then just recall your dragon mount and he will have full health and mana. Take off and kill your undead workers again until done. Land on the road again and buff up yourself (health/mana/etc..). Then recall the dragon and fly up to the elite on the mountain top. AOE blast him and then spam the middle attack button....repeat when the AOE is off cooldown if needed. Immediately the last NPC will spawn so just land and go at him. I never got feared in my fight, I had some sort of DOT put on me for damage, but he seemed to be a very easy fight. Your results may differ as in most WoW quests. The Scythe is huge and will glow for interacting with as soon as he dies. It was still glowing for anyone else to loot when I flew off.

Took forever for me to figure out what I was doing wrong. Ghouls kept getting down to 1 hp and wouldn't die. After a while I got closer and tried again, worked like a charm. If the ghouls don't aggro on you you're too far away and won't get the kills.

Like others, I couldn't get the 30 ghouls at first.

What worked for me was looking for a spot where there were several ghouls working in a "row," landing at one end of the row, and then using either ability til they were fried.

Also as others have said, it seems like the most successful way to eat a ghoul is to select and then land by it before clicking the eat button.

I think this quest may have been nerfed recently. I soloed as a level 71 paladin. Bubbled out of Antiok's fear which he only casted once and it only took 1 or 2 fire balls to take out his giant. It was easier than I remember.

I recommend holding on to the beacon until you have completed most quests in Dragonblight.
The area in which you can use the dragon is pretty big, and the 'vehicle' can be a great replacement for a flying mount while questing in this zone.
Note: if you log out while on the dragon, you will find yourself falling to your death after relogging. Always remember to land before logging.

There's no longer much use in holding on to the beacon, since Cold Weather Flying is now trainable at level 68. Though, if you happen to be unable to obtain the skill for whatever reason, the beacon is still a decent substitute for a flying mount in the areas where it is usable.

As for this patch, the quest is hillarously bugged in few places.
If you jump onto a Vanquisher before it sits and settles down, it will not have flying animation. Which looks like total !@#$. He slowly walks in air or does nothing (you can still fly him, attack and do the quest, but it's just silly)
Now the really funny part - everything I killed using the Vanquisher (so all the scavengers and Antiok's giant) turned into gigantic flowers.

I did that quest before, and I don't remember roasting the undead till they become flowers.

But the quest itself works. You should sit down to kill the scavengers though, if you try to kill them while you're airborne, they may still keep taking damage, but stay alive with 1hp.

I can't see the aiming mark for the dragon. Is it because I am too high up maybe? Even when I move the view, it remains directly below his non-see-through head. lol

Also, he doesn't fly but walks through the air. Very. Slowly. Walks. Granted, he makes big steps and you are there fast, but no wing flap, just walking. Slowly.

I'm trying this on my fire mage toon.

EDITED to add: Finally got the quest done! You have to really get low for this to work. As in almost on the ground. Land once or twice so the dragon can feed (the one he eats doesn't count toward the 30 you need). There was someone else doing the same quest so we did our burning at opposite ends so as to not ninja each other (I love it when players automatically go to different spots!). After getting my 30, I went up to the top of the hill (dragon walked me up). We killed the first one easily then I dismounted and tried to take out the other guy. He Feared me and before I could get him, he killed me. I was below, refueling after rezzing, when I saw the text of his speech again. I finished up and raced up there to help out whoever but they were gone. BUT the scythe was there, just like others had said! FINALLY!

I was having difficulties using the dragon for bombing runs, until I zoomed my perspective into my toon's POV and used the dragon for close-range melee combat. Far easier.

Still kind of buggy, but in a different way, at least for me.

The dragon mount came in two varieties: one that was static, in that it would not fly in moving its wings, but it flew by simply walking. Wings would never flap, and it moved through the air like it was on the ground. This was usable, the attacks worked, but it made it very difficult to aim.

The other variety flew, the wings flapped, but I could never get low enough into GR to kill anything. It's like the dragon came to some lower limit above the ground and would not go any lower. So the attacks did nothing at all, very unusable.

I dismounted and remounted a few times, as the particular variety of dragon that spawned seemed to be random.

On the good side, both Thiassi and Antiok were complete push-overs, no fearing at all, and I just three-shotted Antiok into the ground. Thiassi hardly even seemed like any real elite. Also, just did this with my hunter, I did not have to dismiss my pet or disable any add-ons. The last is best, I can't function with the default display, I need those mods!

Sometimes there might occur an error, which makes it impossible to defeat the Scavengers, or cause damage to any other mobs.

As someone might have already mentioned above, below, or in any other comment, that it's a simple bug, but there might be also another explanation to it than abandoning and relogging. That's it, you can simply get rid of the bug by summoning the dragon again, but this might not work at all to everyone, so try to be closer to the ground to avoid such an error as this.

You can also try waiting for a while, but there's no need to abandon it or relog, the bug will fade away in a minimal moment. But if you want to, you can abandon and relog, ofcourse.

-Reanimated Frost Wyrms can agro you
-Never was able to feed. Range was never good enough for the dragon
-First ability (the one with the casting time) did not do dmg at all
-If you mount the dragon too early he will bug and wont animate the movement, he will freez in the landing position instead
-If you have the same eating problems just dismount whenever your dragon lost mana and recall a new one. It'll have full manapool

The Waste Scavangers HAVE to be attacking you for you to be able to kill them.

Therefore you need to fly down close enough for them to start hitting you for you to kill them, otherwise they will be at 1hp and you will not be able to hurt them further.

Not too tough for a 72. Stay in the middle of the boneyard, but stay in the air. Just spam 2 on the enemies, and 1 if you see a large clump you can flame. When your hp reaches 2/3 or so, just swoop down and grab an enemy.

As for the boss, try to kill the elite on top of the pinnacle, because if the Necrolord ends up on the path leading up to it, he can still fear/shadowbolt you. Use 2 to kill the Giant.

The actual fight with Antiok is just shadowbolt spams and a fear. The fear is the only real worry, since it lasts for a long while, but can probably be broken by abilities and spells designed to do so.

Does anyone else have steering problems with the dragon? I cannot change altitude...Does it work differently than steering your own flying mount?

EDIT: Solution - you have to off of Wyrmrest tower. You cannot just drive off like with a regular flying mount; if you do, the wings will flap but it won't let you change altitude.

Killing the Scourge wasn't an issue for my paladin, Indyia. The quest did, however, bug when I went to kill Thiassi the Lightning Bringer. I wasn't able to do any damage, and died twice before I logged out and disabled all addons except CT Mod. It then worked perfectly, and I was able to kill him with no problem. Grand Necrolord Antiok spawned, and I was able to beat him into submission fairly easily. The Scythe dropped, and I re-summoned the dragon to fly back to Wyrmrest Temple. Oh, if you're human, use your racial 'Every Man For Himself' on the fear - or use the PvP trinket. Works fine.

If you get low on health, you can always fly to a safe zone out of the pit and dismount. Recall your drake and you will be back to full health and mana.

The wandering Storm Giants the quest text warns about (i.e., the ones not shooting electricity in the pit) seem to give experience when killed on your dragon. Might be a glitch, but getting around 4k experience in a few seconds is pretty nice.

Doing this quest on an alt post Shattering, I had trouble with the first few dragons I summoned - I was not able to steer the dragon downward, so could not eat any zombies or reach them with most of my spells. After 3-4 of my dragons died, the one I summoned finally steered normally. So if you are having trouble you may need to resummon the dragon a few times.

Just an observation on my part, but the dragon you are riding needs food to get health and mana back.
I didn't realize you could walk up to the target and eat them alive. For some reason I thought they needed to be dead.

Land right on the cliff to kill the elite. Then as hunter go down the hill a ways - get your pet - send your pet in, don't attack with your hunter. Heal pet while it is feared. Send it in again. And wipe up. Much harder with no pet and if not a healer.

Which is in a higher-level zone, one which requires you to have a flying mount to do many of the quests in. Obviously, the rental mount was for those who hadn't bought Cold Weather Flying yet, but wanted to quest in Storm Peaks. At the time, Cold Weather Flying was something you couldn't even get at level 71 (the level this quest requires). Thus, I said they didn't want you using this drake as a flying mount throughout the zone, since when WotLK came out, you couldn't fly at level 71.

Rebutting and voting down a post that is almost a year old, based upon faulty logic, is kind of a sad move IMO.

As a high level character, you might want to kill the ghouls and the boss without using a dragon. It will work perfectly fine: You'll get credit for it and the Scythe will drop.

Part 1
The scourge are the small humaniod mobs in the depths of galakrond's rest. There are a bunch of the around the entire area, approx 54, 35. It's pretty easy to bunch them up and kill them off.
You have to eat some of them to replenish mana/health. This doesn't require that the mob is at a low health level or anything. Just swoop down and eat them. I would recommend regaining altitude once you eat one because it does take a moment for your mana and health to be replenished.

Part 2
The Grand Necrolord is at 54,31.
I didn't see him on the initial approach, so i killed the elite giant at the top of the spire. The necrolord appeared after the elite giant was killed. He takes no damage from the dragon mount attacks and almost immediately killed my dragon mount.
The necrolord needs to be killed in direct combat (no mount)- so make sure you'e flying right above him when he kills your dragon mount or you'll have a long walk up. He was easy to solo at 73.
After killing him and looting the scythe, i resummoned my quest mount and flew back. Too easy.

Alright, I had a mess with this quest but finally figured it out. Hover up just high enough that you can target a ghoul so that you see the red circle around him then put the yellow light target on him and fire at him. You should see damage figures coming off him and see his life go down on the targeted mob on your screen. When you get him down to 1 hp you will have to go closer to finish him off. Not all the way down just out of his hit range. It should only take a shot or two to finish him off. Usually I got 2 or 3 this way. To eat them go all the way to the ground and target a ghoul (red circle) and eat. He will dissappear and your gauges will go up all the way with just one. I didn't have too much trouble with the storm giants or the frost wyrms. If they target you don't fight just hit the space bar and you will be out of combat in a second. I did get dropped alot. I don't know why. The dragon would say he had been called back to Wyrmrest and I would get a parachute which would drop me right in the middle of the mobs. This is not a strafe flying type quest as you must hold fire on the target for quite a while, they renew or something but it is not glitched I don't believe just tough. Hover and fire and when they are down to 1 go closer and fire again. Hope this works for you.

i was on this quest earlier (dinner break lol) so far i havnt killed a single 1 of the scavangers =( the pyro blasts or whatever they are called arent doing any damage to them at all.. and the dragon seems glitched as well in that it will freeze mid-air (ie not flap wings or anything) Some (not all) of these bombing quests are plain stupid, i would prefer to just go and kill 30 of them on land but slkwiley has just mentioned u dont get any xp for the kills doing it that way so that plain sucks =( oh well hopefully il have a change of luck :P

I've just completed the quest using the flying mount. The trick is to get close enough to the ground that the Wastes Scavengers can hit you. So to clarify, if they can hit you, you can kill them. Happy hunting!

For those of you who have had their dragon be completely unable to attack, Thottbot has the correct explanation. You need to disable your addons and then re-attempt the quest. I had Omen and TitanPanel running, disabled them, and then came back in and breezed through this (fun) quest.

One note - do NOT log out while mounted. You do not retain your mount through a logout, which may well cause you to fall to your death

I ran into a small glitch. Now just so you know I'm a 6/15/43 Lvl 73 Rogue. Everytime Id kill the elite and float down and face the Grand Necrolord I couldn't stick any combo points on him. After 4 very annoying and infuriating tries someone else flew by and summoned him, being the nice rogue that I am I helped her dispatch of this rather infuriating Lock. But to my surprise this time I could stick combo points on him. I don't know if anyone else had this problem but I'm glad its finally over. On a side note even though this other person wasn't in my party we were both able to loot the scythe for the quest.

Maybe it was mentioned before, but I cant figure out how to kill the little suckers(wastes scavengers). I've been on this quest at least 3 times and haven't been successful. Can someone please be kind enough to lend me an explination on this...is it a bug or what?Ty

What a pain. Breath weapon was only thing that worked on the Elite giant. 50-50 chance of you getting him before he gets your ride. Necrolord was easy.

Killed the scourgies at gakalrond's rest and killed the big ice giant but he drained most my dragons life so it took the necromancer 1 shadow bolt to kill my dragon :l so i whooped his ass

FYI dont go afk while on the mount. It times out after about 10 min and will drop you.

After you kill the giant and then the Necrolord, vacate the area very soon! Giant respawns quickly.

This quest still has issues. I disabled my add-ons, abandoned it 3 times and still could not get the scavengers to die from the dragon.

However, I killed the scavengers on foot and then called in the dragon to blast the elite before dismounting and killing the necrolord. It took longer than it should have and you get no xp for killing by hand, but it tallies the count, and allows completion.

The Waste Scavengers need to be killed with Flame Fury (#1 on you action bar). Get close to the Scavengers before attacking. It's a channeled attack so wait for the spell to finish before moving on. Flame Fury will kill Scavenger's well outside of the targeting circle. Occasionally I was able to kill >5 at a time. Ignore the things they throw at you. Just eat (#3) a Scavenger when your health gets low.

Done this quest on a few toons now. Just fly close and spam button #2, which has an AOE so you can just aim between mobs. Eat one occasionally to top off health but keep in mind that the health restore is delayed so don't get too low (which shouldn't be a problem). For the elite at the top of the hill. I hit him with one #1 and then spam #2 again and he goes down pretty fast. The non-elite at the end is only annoying because of the fear but he usually just gets one off that you have to ride out. Once you dps him he goes down fast.

Use this beacon to signal a Wyrmrest vanquisher. Climb upon its back and fly north to Galakrond's Rest. Once there, command the dragon to destroy the Scourge scavengers that work to unearth Galakrond. Once the area has been cleansed, fly to the Wicked Coil, overlooking Galakrond's Rest, to destroy Grand Necrolord Antiok and recover the scythe that he uses to control the wyrms.
