Had to kill about 20 overseers (after the Naga Claws quest) to get this item. The quest rewards and XP make it worth it. Wish it was automatic though.

You can farm this while on "Balance must be Preserved." Simply use the seed at the same station even after you've completed the quest requirements for that location. The seed will continue to spawn Overseers.

Despite the requirement of level 59, it is not possible to obtain this quest at level 59.

What we did was get my level 59 character to the quest target for "Balance Must Be Preserved" while a level 61 was on said quest. The level 61 had not done the Drain Schematics quest. We spawned the steam pump dude several times until it dropped. The level 61 could see the drop, but I at level 59 could not. We tried all the loot types (free for all, etc) and had it drop each time.

It does drop when you don't have the Balance Must Be Preserved quest. But again, not for a level 59.

There are few Steam Pump Overseers up at a given time, and the respawn rate is fairly long.

The best way to quickly get these schematics is while on the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved" (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=9720). Every time you use the Iron Vine Seeds (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=24355), a Steam Pump Overseer will spawn. These overseers you force to spawn won't yield experience, but they can drop the Drain Schematics, as well as Naga Claws required for "A Warm Welcome" (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=9728), and the Unidentified Plant Parts required for "Plants of Zangarmarsh" (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=9802) and "Identify Plant Parts" (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=9784).

There's no cooldown on the Ironvine Seeds. Just it will not force a respawn of a Steam Pump Overseer if one is already up that you forcibly spawned. However the one that guards the controls can respawn independently as well.

Yup, Balance Must Be Preserved is definitely the way to do this =p I was killing my fourth Overseer when AV popped, and just as I was resigning to have to come back he dropped the plans.

Ok yes this is farmable... you need the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved" kill the "Steam Pump Overseer" he will be standing in front of pump use that were provide by the quest to finish part of the quest plus it will resummon "Steam Pump Overseer"..kill him again if did not drop.. keep using to resummon him and repeat i did this as a 62 MS warrior took me 22 kills to get it...8% drop

I can confirm that you get zero exp for the Steam Pump Overseer. You can summon him endlessly using the Ironvine Seeds, but get between 10 and 14 silver per kill and some plant parts.

I had a L60 in party in an attempt to get the Drain Schematics quest, but they were not visible. It does look like a person needs to be on the Balance Must Be Preserved quest. Drop rate is still very poor.

Oddly enough on all my three previous chars I got them pretty much like most others, one the first or so overseer kill while on the Balance Must Be Preserved quest. However with my latest char, I had to grind Nagas for a long time to get this to drop, eventually got it off a Slavedriver. Weird. So this just for those who might be getting frustrated with theirs, you just might be having some bad luck even if on the quest.

It should probably be noted that if you want to stand there and summon Overseers using your Ironvine Seeds, you will not receive exp for these spawns. So if it's starting to take a while, it might not be worth the time to just stand there spamming kills and not receiving any exp for it.

I can confirm that you can get this item after completing Balance Must Be Preserved.

I just got the item drop off of a Bloodscale Wavecaller. This was the first Naga I killed after completing and turning in the quest Balance Must Be Preserved.

I was killing random Nagas and it dropped from second or third kill by Bloodscale Enchantress. I have done the pre-quest before it, so you dont need to be on it for drop.

I can confirm that you do not need to be on Balance must be preserved to have the drain schematics quest start item drop, as I remembered this quest when i had nearly completed questing in Zangarmarsh, and farmed the item, took no more than 10 minutes.

As far as drops go with patch 3.3.5. you don't need to be on the "Balance Must Be Preserved" Quest to get the schematics but you cen use the Seed during the quest to reaply it on the same drainpipe controls over and over again each time spawning a new Overseer who has the mosts % chance of dropping this quest starter!

All you need for this item to drop is to be lvl 59 and kill one of the mobs dropping it.

The schematics do drop after turning in Balance Must Be Preserved. I had already turned in the quest but realized I didn't get the schematics so I farmed some Steam Pump Overseers with no success. I actually got the drop off of a Bloodscale Overseer.

Went to cords 70, 80. Mission was to farm Overseers for drop.

Quest dropped first Overseer kill.

Was on no other quests at the time - was working on Mysteries of the March achievement and was stuck on the last few.

I did this with my Level 66 Priest-Shadow. Flew on my carpet to about middle of structure in the middle of the lake, stop on its structure. Drank the underwater potion, dove down into middle of it got a "COMPLETE". Turned in. Level up!

This is a good thing to look for if you are stuck with only a couple quests to go. After you turn in the schematics, the questgiver will tell you to fly to Hellfire. When you get there it counts as another quest, and flying back counts as another quest. So finding these schematics is a bonus 3 quests.

Post-Cata patch 4.3: Unable to believe it myself, but my Quest Completionist add-on told me I was missing this chain and from most of the comments above players originally had to have the Balance Must Be Preserved to get the drop chance. Then comments said that had changed. So hoping I wasn't wasting time, I headed to the Bloodscale Grounds, and it dropped on the very first Steam Pump Overseer.

Had just completed Mysteries of the Marsh, so confirming as of this patch it IS still obtainable even loooooong after completing Balance Must Be Preserved. Now I can do the last four quests to clear the zone, thanks to wowhead users like YOU. =^)

This does not seem to work for me. Started off with both quests. Found the drain - no problem. Drain Schematics quest status is now 'Drain Located (Complete)'. Took advice and continued using Ironvine seeds to re-spawn Overseers. Killed about 30-40 of them - no schematic dropped (should be about 1 in 13). Decided maybe better to complete and hand in the 'Balance Must Be Preserved' quest. Did so but still no drop. Returned to kill more Overseers but still no drop (had to wait for re-spawn this time). Reading the quest, I'm thinking I should have got the schematics first before locating the drain. If so, this may be bugged. Perhaps I'll try Bloodscale Overseer/Wavedcaller/Slavedriver/Enchantress - perhaps I'll have more luck.

I confirm the theory! This item "Drain Schematics" only drops if you are on the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved"!
After that you just need to go to the big X on serpent lake (the entrance to coilfang instances) and them go deliver the quest. Its easy...

Alright, instead of waiting for the Pump Overseers to spawn go ahead and get the schematics when you have the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved". You can use the Ironvine Seeds an infinite amount of times on the same pump. You will therefore have infinite spawns of Pump Overseers and eventually get the Pump Schematics.

You don't need to grinding to finish this quest... Go to the location at 50, 41 which is in the middle of the cross and swim down against the "stream". Then you will complete the quest. Realy simple.

The 3% to drop is a bit deceptive. The item seems to only drop if you are on or have completed the Quest "Balance Must be Preserved." I was grinding the Nagas and the Overseers for faction on my druid for an hour and there was no drop. Then I killed one Overseer while doing Balance Must be Preserved on my priest and it dropped off the first one.

I actually found the entrance by accidentally exploring the area. from the surface, just swim to the entrance of piping.. along the way, there is a spot where your breathing timer goes off. if you continue, it does come back, but youll have more than enough to get to the instance portals.

Drainpipe is at exactly 50, 41. Just swim out, then straight down into it. No potions needed, your breath timer will refill itself halfway through the pipe. This is the entrance to some instances, so everyone will eventually be very used to it. Coilfang, Slave Pens, Underbog.

You get the schematics as a random drop; I got it twice off the Nagas on the north side of Serpent Lake within about 3 kills.

The drain is in the middle of Coilfang Reservoir; it's the huge structure on the map in the center. (it's all underwater). Swim to the center, and then dive briefly into the air bubbles coming up, and you will complete the quest. The actual coordinates are 50,40. You don't need any special equipment.

If you swim through the drain, you will get to at least a couple of instances. You don't need any special equipment or gear to get through. About halfway into the pipe, well before you run out of air, you move into an area that recharges your breath. You're still underwater, but you can breathe. After swimming awhile in the breathe zone, you'll come to normal water again, at which point you swim up to real air.

I accepted this quest, but Ysiel won't take the schematics. No matter what I do, she still has the grey ? above her head and wont let me complete. I don't understand!

I have farmed this for 2 hours already. Is it just me or is this quest item really rare?

You DO NOT NEED a lock or pot to get to the instances there are spots of bubbles much like in sonic which refill your air meter

I also farmed this for an hour before it dropped (off a Bloodscale Wavecaller, if you're interested). I wouldn't have even known about it except that I have two characters in Zangarmarsh. My Priest got it right away while killing Naga. So I went back with my Rogue and killed and killed and killed. If you've done the pre-requisites as mentioned above, then just keep trying. You should get it eventually.

For those of you that are having trouble with this quest, are you guys sure you pushed the "accept" button on the lower left corner of the quest page? I thought my quest was broken, but I forgot to accept the quest.

Confirmed: you MUST complete "Disturbance at Umbrafen Lake" and " As the Crow Flies" before the plans will drop.

I farmed the Naga for hours, then read Thott more closely... Once these 2 quests were complete, the plans dropped off the first Naga I killed.

In the middle of serpent lake, there is the coilfang resevoir. Go in the middle of the reservoir and swim down (x) until u see somtin suckin in water. Go in tht and u completed quest.

it's important to note that if you're not able to turn the quest in, it may have been that you accidentally deleted the item from your bag; if it's deleted you can't turn the quest in.

I got it pretty easily by having the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved" and killing the Steam Pump Overseer that spawn at the Umbrafen Lake Contols at 70.80 and while waiting for it to respawn you can kill another by entangling the Controls. The reason to kill the Steam Pump Overseer is because the drop rate is higher than other naga.

4. Keep Scroll

Tip: If the scroll doesn't drop at first, you can use the Ironvine Seeds again and again and again on the Steam Pump Controls, even if you've already entangled it once - each time it summons a Steam Pump Overseer, the mob with the best drop rate for Drain Schematics scroll.

Completed the two required quests, and the plans still haven't dropped. I've killed enough naga for the 30 naga claw turn in quest, and have circled the area farming the overseers multiple times. Sort of am at a loss about what to do, my other characters get the schematics almost immediately.

Drain Schematics is a quest related item - you can use it to accept Drain Schematics quest.

So, to start the quest you need to loot Drain Schematics item from any naga mobs around the area. Usually need to 1-2 kills to obtain this.
There is a large lake named Serpent Lake in the middle of Zangarmarsh. You need to swim to the middle of the lake toward the big metal construction.
There is a passage between the tubes, you need to swim close to count the task. Just beware of angry fishes in the lake, overpulling them may be fatal.

Still drops as of 2021-06-02 - but it can take a while. Keep killing and it will eventually drop. Best to combine it with the quest "Balance Must Be Preserved" since you are there for it anyways.

Appears you have to be on the quest for it to drop. I spent hours trying to farm it before i had the quest Balance Must be Preserved.

This item will not drop untill you do some of the quests at the Cenarion Expedition hub. I farmed for 2 hours without a drop. Went back and did the chain up to "Balance Must Be Preserved" and got it after around 4-6 kills.

Even when on the quest Balance Must Be Preserved, it's not a guaranteed drop.

After killing all 4 Steam Pump Overseers at the pumps, I had to spawn 16 more to get it to drop.

In order for these to drop you need to complete at least Disturbance at Umbrafen Lake, but I would suggest completing As the Crow Flies as well which is given right after Disturbance and just requires you to wait a few mins. I was in a party with two of my characters and the Schematics dropped, but I was only able to loot them on one of the characters. I then went and did those two quests previously mentioned and was able to loot the Schematics within 2 kills afterwards.
