As a healer this is an awesome trinket to mess around with.
As a paladin this trinket will give a flat 15% bonus to your effective healing and none of it will be over healed.
Or with any healing class, go for a BIG heal right before a pull, nice mitigation to help the tank get agro even if they miss with thier taunt, specials and auto attacks.
Or even in anticipation of an enrage, the extra bubble is awesome.
Also, as this acts as a shield you are less likely to pull agro from the tank (thinking more about multi mob tanking or sensitive agro fights).

Another way to look at this trinket.

Let's say I am a Pally, or a Priest, or anyother healer for that matter.
I cast a 2.5sec 4000 HP heal.
This trinket then provides an additional (4000*0.15)= 600 HP damage absorbed
If we consider that 600 shield as part of the heal, that heal effectively became a 4600 HP heal.

Dividing the additional +600 to the heal by the 2.5 second spell coefficient of 71.43%
(600/0.7143) = 839.98
Meaning the on-use effect is semi-equivalent to an on use ~840 +heal when using 4000 point heals, assuming that the shield absorbs full damage, making it like unto a reactive heal component, like prayer of mending or earth shield. Averaging this out over time makes the effect essentially +140 healing (but healing that is not wasted by overhealing).

The more +heal you have, the more effective +heal this trinket has.
For a 5000 HP heal, this trinket is equivalent to an on demand 1050 +heal effect. Overtime equal to 175 +healing.

All this, and overheals will result in less waste as 15% of the spell will still linger as the shield, absorbing damage from the next attack.

Still a VERY useful trinket in TBC, and probably on into WotLK, though only time will tell.

How does this operate on Chain Heal and Circle of Healing? Does it only give your current target a shield, or does it shield every healed target? The power of this trinket is obvious, but if it were to work on every CH/CoH jump too it'd be absolutely absurd, even at 70.

picked this up tonight while my guild was doing a throw back run through aq.

it worked perfectly for me, and i feel like it worked extra well for me tonight because i was testing a 0/31/40 build - (dual wielding earth living weapons and spamming chain heal with the chain heal and earth living glyphs) - pop my trinkets and watch damage absorbing shields pop up on all the raid members around me.

Just dropped for me on my priest last nite in an AQ run. My priest is still leveling at the moment (70 right now) and this trinket is SUPER helpful when I'm running instances. Healed Magtheridon's Lair and Gruul's Lair last night and had a blast with it. Much more useful than the trinkets I've gotten while questing and undoubtedly useful all the way through 80. Makes ya wonder if blizz is gonna nerf it at some point, not too often you see an item with a flat % based use/proc like this. All it would take is a simple "has a reduced effect for players above level 70" added to the tooltip and it'd be a forgotten memory!

I noticed that this item's use effect says "up to 15% of the amount healed". This led me to think that this percent would diminish after level 60. Can any 80s who have this item confirm whether it still absorbs 15% of healing done at 80?

I'm trying to get this trinket to use as a holy pala in arena. I got decent ret gear and enough nature resist to solo Skeram and Sartura in AQ 40. Then I need the help of my dk partner to kill Fankriss and Viscidus every week. I've seen in 3v3 a resto shaman using it, but forgot his name, however I remember the buff "Persistent Shield" which is the buff that is triggered by this trinket, so I guess it's still useful as lvl 80.

Please, can a Paladin please answer my questions:

Scenario: I place Beacon of Light on the tank, activate the trinket and cast Holy Light on me. I stand 5 yards next to the tank.
1) I get a shield... But what about the Beacon? Does the Beacon-Heal provide a shield, too?
2) What about the splash-heal of Holy Light (with Glyph...)? Does the splash Heal acitivate shields?
3) I cast Holy Light on the tank and he gets a shield for 1500. Then i cast Holy Shock for 5000 on him. Does the new 750 shield overwrite the 1500 shield? Do they stack like at Divine Aegis at Priests?

Also, a question for Shamans:
1) I cast Riptide critically on me and Ancestral Awekening gets activated - so i heal the damaged tank for 2000. Does the tank get a 300 shield when the trinket was active?

In general: The trinket wording says nothing about direct heal only and spells like Prayer of Mending (where the trinket creates shields) are working with the trinket nice, so i had to question the ^&*! above ;)

If this wasn't an on-use and the effect worked on every single heal you casted ever, this would be the single best-in-slot item for any healer, in any expansion, regardless of how bad or good your gear is.

...I think they should buff this, replacing gear is overrated!

I've just done some testing with the Scarab Brooch.

The shield from this does not stack with itself. If you apply a 1500 shield, and then proc what would be a 1000 shield, the old buff will remain unchanged. Overhealing will proc the effect normally, but certain unusual heals and HoTs will not. (I noticed Renew does not, and Glyph of Power Word: Shield will only proc it on the caster.) The effect can proc on players not in your raid. The buff on your target is called Persistent Shield (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=26470), is a Magic effect, and lasts for 8 seconds from the time it is applied. It will remain even after the initial 30 second duration of the trinket's use effect, which is also called Persistent Shield (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/spell=26467). The use effect itself has no buff type. The shield will not interfere with Val'anyr or Divine Aegis, and will stack freely with both.

What this means:
You cannot spam heal someone to accumulate a large shield in anticipation of a large hit.
This is next to worthless for non-healers, even if they do produce a steady stream of healing or overhealing. (Shadow priests)
Since this grants a Magic buff, this makes a good dispel buffer in PvP, in addition to its base effect.
Addons like Grid and PowerAuras, which identify buffs by their names, will be unable to tell the two buffs apart (not a major problem.)

All in all, a solid healing trinket for certain fights, but probably not what you want to use all the time.

I was thinking of using this on my lvl 72 Resto shammy until I find something better. Right now I still have a couple green trinkets from BC and +28 SP with +100 SP every 2 minutes just doesn't seem as useful as this. I was hoping someone could answer a few questions about it though:

1) How does this react to chain heal? Will it proc only on the first target or on all of the targets? If that latter it would be a great asset in fights where the whole party is taking small amounts of damage.

2) Does this have a visible effect like PW:Shield or does it just show up as a buff? What can I say; I like cool looking stuff. ;)

3) Espoire tested and found the shields will not stack, nor will a weaker shield replace a stronger one (thank you for posting that Espoire). Does anyone know if a stronger shield will replace a weaker one? For instance, if I put a 1000 hp shield on a target, then they take 500 damage and my brooch puts up a 800 hp shield (or even a 1200 hp shield), will that replace the old one?

I finally got this on my Shaman. Here are some results of testing:

will proc a shield:

Earth Shield healing on yourself
direkt healing of Riptide, Chain Heal (every target), Healing Wave and Lesser Healing Wave
the healing of "Glyph of Healing Wave"

will not proc a shield:

the healing of Ancestral Awakening
the healing of Earth Shield on another person (the tank for example)
ticks of the Earthliving Weapon HoT or Riptide HoT
ticks of Healingstream Totem

So, I was browsing through Atlas Loot and found this little gem, thought to myself 'hmm... self, you should check into this', and headed this way.

Very interesting to see this still has use in current endgame. I'm especially interested for the Lich King fight, as in my 10-man group we've lost our disc priest and our missing those shields. Being a tank, I'm not exactly sure, so I thought I'd ask you healers out there. Would this make much of a difference in handling Infest if, say, it was on a resto Shaman? Or is it worth going to the trouble to obtain?

There are benefits and disadvantages to using this.

One notable benefit is that it scales with current gear due to it being a flat percentage. Lower ilvl trinkets with a flat spellpower bonus would obviously not scale as well. In fact, this scales so well, if one compares it to the talisman of resurgence, at 4000 spellpower raid buffed, this would account for more prevention than the talisman proc would for healing.

Another formidable advantage is that the overhealing penalty is removed as long as the bubble is eventually removed. This increases the value of every heal done under the effects of this spell.

In arena, the ideal is keeping a kill target as healed as possible. They will most likely be the target of dispels and if they dip low, executes. Spam healing the afflicted person with the buff acting as a buffer for dispels is probably quite effective. While I've never tried it personally, I'm trying to think of situational advantages it might provide.

One disadvantage of using this trinket is the rather hefty cooldown. When compared to a static 200 spellpower on a trinket (assuming it brings you to 4.2k raid buffed), the spellpower will contribute a small percentage to your effective healing. However, it will do so consistently, which in a fight with uniform damage, may have a greater overall effect on the outcome. The trinket would probably be best suited to healing intensive moments, especially when combined with haste buffs to utilise as many absorbs as possible.

Two minor disadvantages of the trinket which will probably not be of concern to those doing high rated arena or serious raiding, are that the absorbs will not show up on metres. Its was a reason people trashed val'anyr, saying it was the legendary that was fastest to be replaced. Another is that you sacrifice using a trinket slot for regen, as trinket slots are usually good to use for regen. This will probably cause its usage to be cut down in Cataclysm, where mana regeneration will supposedly become a larger concern.

I'm sure there are many oversights I've made, so if anyone who uses it wants to add some info (like its perfect syncing with a cooldown), I'd love to hear it. Just wanted to put some thought into why it would still see use.

I have it on good authority (hearsay from a friend) that Ahn'Qiraj will be removed in Cataclysm, much like old Onyxia and Naxxramas were. I highly suggest that anyone who plans to heal someday grab this trinket while it's still available.

Also, get the mounts while your at it.

As of Patch 4.0.1, this trinket is now, unfortunately, broken. Blizzard has decided to no longer allow this trinket to work.

Don't bother going back and farming AQ40 for it, now.

Its so annoying that they killed it. It was the one level 60 item that was worth using. It wasnt a game changer, it wasnt OP, it was just a fun little trinket from a time gone by.

I understand Blizz wants us to drop old stuff and upgrade with the times, but its absurd to take it so far and kill little gems like this.

No longer a viable trinket for high levels. Due to the effect becoming less powerful at higher levels.

Use: Your magical heals provide the target with a shield that absorbs damage for up to 15% of the amount healed for 30 sec. This effect becomes less powerful at higher levels. (3 Min Cooldown)

At 85, with the buff from this trinket up, I got no absorption from my heals.

Anyone notice that the pre-BC trinkets are so much more interesting than all of the post-vanilla trinkets? Uther's Strength, Darkmoon Card: Twisting Nether... I'd go and link more, but you guys get the idea. I don't mean to insult, bash or disparage Blizzard, but they've really gone from making useful, neat trinkets that are equipped for their Equip or Use effects to simple stat sticks to buff up our health and mana pools.

Come on, Blizzard. Give us some more Brooches, Uthers and Nethers!

I think you guys are looking at this item wrong. It isnt that great, if I understand it correctly. You must "use" to activate it. On your next heal, the shield is activated. If you holy nova, 5 people will be getting shieled for around 200 damage give or take. They only get this shield once...

Therefore its good for single target large heals. If you get hit for a 3k heal...you get a whopping 450 damage shield.

Not that great IMO?

This seems very valuable but only situationaly. If you are just healing the tank(s) the benefit will be pretty good as they will consume the shield by the time you cast another heal on them. If you are healing the raid in general a lot will go to waste.

A lot of the value of it stems from the fact that if you fully heal someone and they get the shield it's as if they had more total health (temporarily).

It would also be good in fights where everyone gets hurt like vael.

A shield is a way of saving "heals" on a certain character for upcoming damage. So this is only overhealing when the character wont receive any damage at all.

On a MT this means +15% to all your healing spells for 30 seconds. In a Vaelastrasz fight it means +15% to all healing spells for everyone, AND a shield for casters which means they can do a LOT more dps because they dont get interrupted by damage from Vael.

What i'm wondering about it the 30 seconds... Is it the time that the shield lasts on the target of your heals, or is it the time that the healer has the trinket buff (and the shield has a seperate timer).

I'm a assuming that this trinket is for ALL heals within the next 30secs and that the shield lasts 8 seconds, now can you imagine tranquility? everyone in your group would have a relatively permanent shield for the duration,I'm wondering if just the burst heal from regrowth would proc this or also the ticking heals every few secs

however with a priest the relatively same thing can be done with prayer of healing and their greater heals when they put on +healing buff (1.10 discipline talent) the shield will be very affective on the MT,wondering how this works with renew

This trinket will also remain useful after the expansion as it will shield yourself everytime you heal and is percentage rather than value

The question is, does it work on HoT spells?

I, for one, would love to use this during Vael fights. Because, the poster above who said "if you can't beat Vael you don't have this trinket" is correct, but Vael is a very random encounter. Even BWL farming guilds wipe at him sometimes. Therefore, this trinket is lovely for Priests during that fight.

I can also imagine using it in other situations. :)

spamming someone with heals when this is up is basicly giving that person/persons 15% of the heal in extra hp. that's good in many situations. think group heal at 30% huhuran or mt healing at any spike damage or/and mortal striking boss in the game. then the pvp part with helping ms'd flagcarriers survive. one of the three items I really really want from aq (the others beeing the staff (check) and the cloak from cthun (give now)). the ring is pretty good aswell I supose but not in any way half as usefull.

Oh and to reply, The shield definetely willl not stack. That would definetely be overpowered. Imagine just loading the tank up with tons of heals / over heals right before the fight starts...or right before you run to cap an AB flag? I wouldnt' doubt it if the PW:Shield and this Trinkets shield stack though.

i'm a resto-druid an got this one... and it's quite cool =)

so, to those of you, who don't understand how it works:

on activation it gives you a 30sec buff, which gives every direct heal you cast in this 30sec the shield. those shields last for 8sec and you don't get shields for HoTs or anything like that (i think it won't work on holy nova eather).

anyway, its realy good for PvP, enrage-bosses and (for me as a druid) for healing AoE-mages.
(and as a bonus, it's 15% which will make it still usable if you're lvl70 in BC an have 2000 +heal... ZHC is not... )

but in some fights, rejuvenating gem and shard of the scale will give you more benefits...

IMO This is one of the best/better trinkets. The benefit from +Healing is not as good as a sheild that absorbs 15% damage. If you think about it, the talisman of power isnt as good, as you get more "healing" from the 15% sheild. Also, Because almost all the rest of your gear has +healing or +mana/5sec a unique ability such as this has way more effectivness in combat. Situational, probably, but still a very good trinket.

I'm currently in an endgame BC guild that's done up to Gruul + VR. We're planning on going back to all the pre-BC raids we didn't finish, and I have to say, now that we have noticed this little beauty we may go to AQ40 more than once. Being a percent it scales very well at lv 70, and allows pallies, shamen and druids to get their own low-power version of the PW:S spell (and gives priest another version to add to their arsenal).

As a pally, I know this will work with all my heals (I'll make sure to pop it with LoH at some point... /drool). Just hoping for the other healers it works with AoE heals (I believe it would if they're direct heals) and HoTs (don't think it would work with anything other than regrowth's first and lifebloom's last ticks).

Does this grant damage protection from one of your heals for 30 sec on a target, or does it stack your healing total over 30 sec in damage protection on a target? It's a bit unclear. Either way though, it's an insane trinket.

if a pally got it:
1) use gear with lots of health
2) heal ppl for a while until almost out of mana
3) use trinket
4) LOH (when u have almost no mana)
5) mt can take more dmg
6) get more mana and get bak to healing
7) kill boss :)

maybe blizz should add something like this for casters that gives a dot that deals 15% of the spell's dmg over 9 secs, lasts for 30 secs. then again, maybe thats too cheap for mage/lock ;)

I would assume that it provides a shield for all heals over 30 seconds...that's how I read it anyway.

I was just imagining this on a crit spec'd inspiration priest spamming prayer of healing with this trinket activated. Shields + increased armor + the healing already provided. Be fairly impressive for a priest in the MT group.

Cooldown two or three minutes? I think that's the biggest question. Anyone who can confirm?

this is not just a freaking druid item...
yeah with prayer of healing that trinket is the best if you acedently get a few too many mobs attacking everyone, pws yourself, pop the trinket, prayer of healing, the new shield on yourself should be enough to allow you to cast prayer of healing again without getting interupted and this continues untill the trinkets effect wears out

The way it works is basically you pop the trinket, each heal you throw during the 30 second duration also gives the target a shield that absorbs dmg equal to 15% of that heal. You cannot stack the shields. It doesn't share cooldown with ZHC so they can be used together. And the cooldown is 3 min =). Hope it answers a question or two out there. Oh and yeah it doesn't matter if the heal overhealed some amount, it still gives the 15% of the total heal.

Does the effect stack with faith second set bonus (on greater heal critical hits your target is protected with a holy shield that absorbs up to 500 dmg). Could be fun to pop out this trinket and cast gheal rank5 with inner focus and watch when your target gets 750 shield + 500 shield + 942 shield :)

actually, both shard of the scale and rejuvenating gem outclass this item
on the long run. This is something nice for PoH encounters like world dragons
or huhuran berserk mode, but when it comes to keeping the MT up you'll be
better with the 2 previously named items.

and second, this item is suited best for a priest, i works on prayer of healing
so you can give 5 shields every 3.5 sec in a max of 30 sec :)

This item has if nothing, improved in tbc since its % based yea..
A paladin from my guild critheals for 9K in raids.. thats 1350 dmg absorbtion..

Updated the bug fixes list in the original post with the following fix:

Fixed a bug with the Scarab Brooch item that prevented the Persistent Shield proc from this item from applying to new targets in certain scenarios.

This was an accidental omission and this bug fix should be present and available on the 1.13.6 PTR now.

It's not very good. It only works on direct heals, unlike it claims with 'magical heals'. It's of use for tank healers as tanks are the only ones taking consistent damage on most fights, however they're usually buff capped and thus would not appreciate this trinket kicking off Ony or DM T. Leaving only few bosses it can be used for such as Vael / Firemaw in BWL and Viscidus in AQ40. Personally I'd use it combined with PoH / Chain Heal. Don't waste EPGP / DKP on this, there's plenty of trinkets out there that are far greater.

This Trinket is criminally underrated!

It is one of the best trinkets for group healing on encounters with frequent heavy raid damage like sapphiron. Its long 30 sec duration is great. The shield it applies last for only 8 seconds so you better know when raid damage goes out. Its also decent in pvp. But most important the effect doesn't get nerfed b4 cata prepatch so you can enjoy this trinket for years to come.
