I spent about half an hour fishing in the ocean for these fish and using Fishing Buddy I got:
Murglesnout: 78 (57.4%)
Deepsea Sagefish: 32 (23.5%)
Fathom Eel: 13 (9.6%)
Volatile Water: 14 (9.6%)

525 base fishing + Kalu'ak (+30) with +3 mod, enhanced +5 glove, Weather Beaten Fishing hat (+5), and Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (+100) giving me a total of 668 skill. No junk at all unless I fished after the lure faded.

Not too bad but still a bit lower than I'd want considering I am dual spec'ed as moonkin and resto druid and would need a lot of this for either +spirit or +int food. Half an hour of fishing should be enough for 1 full raid run unless you spend a lot of time wiping.

definitely do this fishing in twilight highlands. i'll post some numbers in a bit but the difference seems pretty substantial as far as drop rates go, and there's no reason to waste your time getting useless murglesnout if you can avoid it.

My results from the ocean in Twilight Highlands after 30 minutes:

Murglesnount: 60 (50.4%)
Algaefin Rockfish: 19 (16.0%)
Deepsea Sagefish: 30 (25.2%)
Volatile Water: 10 (8.4%)
Failed Attempts: 6

This was as I leveled from effective 615 to 624 skill. This isn't statistically different from colar's results.

I'd say Uldum is probably the best place to fish for these - the Fathom Eel sidecatches are used in the Seafood Feast Magnifique recipe, so save those for when your guild gets the recipe. Unless you're keen on the +crit food you get from Rockfish, Uldum's the place to be.

I'd say Uldum is the best place, droprate seems to be the same as in twilight highlands, although you get the Fathom Eels used in the new Seafood Feast.

It makes sense to me that there are no schools for these fish. After the change to Fishing that allows low level fishing in any body of water, having these Deepsea Sagefish fished only in open water means that only people with high level fishing can catch them. If they were in schools, anyone with low level fishing could catch them. If the top-end buff food receipes require these fish, then it stands to reason that your fishing skill needs to be high enough to catch them.

I did well fishing off the dock at Dragonmaw Port in Twilight Highlands. I caught 53 Murglesnount, 27 Deepsea Sagefish, 30 Algaefin Rockfish and a handful of Volatile Waters. Note that I did start fishing in an Algaefin Rockfish school and just kept fishing after the school was fished out.

Went to Twilight Highlands, Highbank - 78.12, 78.53. Raised fishing skill from 494 to 525 using the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (+30 skill), Weatherbeaten Fishing Hat (+5 skill), and a Glow Worm (+100 skill) with these results over 422 casts:

Murglesnout 205 (48.6%)
Deepsea Sagefish 120 (28.4%)
Algaefin Rockfish 62 (14.7%)
Volatile Water 25 (5.9%)
Gray Trash 10 (2.4%)

I didn't fish any gray trash after reaching a base fishing skill of 500. I also noticed that I was catching a Deepsea Sagefish on average of about 1 per minute overall, so if you need a stack you're looking at about 20 minutes, maybe a minute or two less, with a base skill of 525. I also noticed that the frequency of Deepsea Sagefish caught improved from a base skill of 508 to 525 when using a similar population size:

So far i fishing that fish all Cata places best drop for me is from Tol Barad Peninsula.

For around 15 min fishing:

17 x trash drops

I fishing twice there once on 485 skill other time on 520 skill almost same drop both time only with Kulu'ak fishing pole.

If you're not the uber maxed out fisherman with all the fishing skill buffs listed above by others, you'll have to spend a great deal more time than they did. My fishing skill was 375 and I did have the Kalu'ak fishing pole. I got tons of junk (empty bottle of rum five or six times in a row; driftwood five or six times in a row; various mixes of junk) and it took twenty or so casts before I got one Deepsea Sagefish. Occasionally, I'd get two in a row! After an hour, I still didn't have a full stack so I'm going to get my 450 fisherman who is only level 80 out here and see if there's any improvement.

Got on my toon that has a higher fishing skill (475) with the Kalu'ak fishing pole (+30 skill) and got a full stack in 23 minutes. I also got far less junk and seemed to level fishing faster. So, the lower your skill is, the longer you'll be there trying to catch deepsea sagefish.

Uldum, Coastal water. I spend 2 Fish Attractors so its about 20 minutes of fishing:

Fished from open water sources in the ocean, rivers and lakes don't seem to count as obvious as its name implies.

Fishing Skill: 525 + 20 from fishing rod, and +75 from Bright Baubles = 620.

Fished in Uldum at the coastline south of the Lost City of Tol'vir for around one hour.

If you are not a Fisherman, the 'best' place to farm these is Glimmerdeep Gorge in the Shimmering Expanse. There are about 10-15 Oceanic Broadheads swimming around there. Dropchance is average (about 1 in 6) but it's better then nothing

I got an over 60% catch rate right behind Highpoint (Alliance) coords - 80.8 , 81.8 exactly. My fishing skill is maxed, using a standard pole, but with a +75 lure on it. This is the only spot I've found that is a reliable over 50% catch rate.

I am seeing pretty standard drop rates for this fish across all zones for fishing in open ocean.

The only upside I see in fishing Tol Barad is that Volatile Water catches were 1 to 3 each time instead of 1-2.

The downside to Tol Barad is the 675 Fishing Skill required. With max skill, a few enchants and a lure I only hit 667.

I fish for these off the southern coast of Uldum around Schnottz's Landing.

A get 150-180g per stack of 5 severed sagefish head on my server, roughly 600-720g per full stack of 20.

My fishing is at 525 and I use the Kaluak Fishing Pole and the Weather Beaten Fishing Hat with the lure from the hat. I rarely, if ever get junk.

I try to fish up a stack of these per day to sell at the AH. I'm making bank off of them right now because for the last 2 weeks I seem to be the only person selling these at the AH on my server. It is a low pop server so I guess that helps.

Anyway, I wanted to share some data. I do believe that the catch rate for these fish, at least in the southern Uldum area is affected by either a day/night cycle, a night/day cycle, or something else completely random.

For example at 11am server time today I spent 30 minutes off one of the platforms that stick out in the water and my catch was as follows:

17 Fathom Eel
12 Volatile Water

I went back to this same spot at 9pm server time, spent 30 minutes again and the catch was as follows:

I have noticed that sometimes the Deepsea Sagefish seem to jump in my lap, other times it takes 2-3 minutes to catch just 1 of them. I'm leaning to something more random, say at random times of day or night, the catch being better than others. I haven't collected to enough data to be able to predict, or to even determine if its something you can predict. It very would could be completely RNG, but I have no doubts that there is something that affects the catch rate at certain times.

Whoa! Perhaps the laws of averages quit working or I got ultra-lucky, but I popped one of my Elixirs of Water Walking and went out to where I got fatigue and backed up a little. Faced toward the deep sea and approximately every third cast was Algaefin Rockfish (no pool of course) the Deepsea Sagefish or Volatile Water. So, my bags didn’t fill with tons of Murglesnout. I did this in southern Twilight Highlands.

Jokingly to myself I tried it because Deepsea Sagefish didn’t make logical sense to catch on a shoreline. I did it just enough to cook up a stack of 20 Severed Sagefish Heads. When I have time I’m going to try it again for some auctions.

I was an English major, I don’t do percentages. Please someone try it and see if I was just lucky.

The catch rate seems to be dependent on your fishing skill. At 480 I was catching approximately 1 sagefish every 10 casts. I used my fishing hat and lure which added 100 to my skill and caught 12 sagefish in 15 casts with the rest being driftwood. Could be just dumb luck but I doubt it.

It also makes a dif where in uldum you fish. I was at Ramkahen just off the docks (55 36) and spent 30 mins not catching anything, then moved to Snottz's Landing and the first 4 i fished up were Deepsea Sagefish.

If your in uldum, be sure to be fishing in the right area of open water. It's not all the same.

So far my favorite fishing spot in Tol Barad is at 20, 37. If you have any water walking elixirs or spells, you can run straight to the wrecked ship in front of the northern-most cannons at Wellson Shipyard.

I have fished these in Uldum, Twilight Highlands and Tol Barad. By far the best drop rate is in Tol Barad. If your alliance, zone in and run down to the shore near the Ally base (you'll see a ship). I average 12 per 10 mins in this spot.

Horde probably has a similar spot...good luck. It helps if you play music while grinding Murglesnout!

My curiosity was piqued. Since I am a healer, I need the sagefish. Based off of previous comments, I went to Uldum. Started with base fishing skill of 185.

Based off of 50 casts and located right at Schnottz's Landing, I fished:

All in all, I'd say a pretty decent drop rate so far. great for queue times.

I fished both Uldum and Twilight Highlands for about 90 minutes total today. About half the time, I just used the +75 hat lure, along with my Kaluak pole and 525 skill, the rest of the time for an experiment, I applied a +150 Heat Treated Lure.

The numbers for me in both places were about the same, although I think with the higher lure, the non-Murglesnouts hit a little more often.

My percentages were about 50% Murgles, 25% Deepsea Sagefish, 17.5% whatever's indigenous to the zone (Algaefin Rockfish or Fathom Eeel), and the remainder as Volatile Water.

If you don't have maximum fishing skill level, you might be wondering if deepsea sagefish are worth fishing for. These were my results fishing for 20 minutes on the coast of Uldum with an initial skill level of 354, +5 weather-beaten fishing hat, +20 Seth's fishing pole, +100 glow worm = 479.

31 pieces of junk = 42.5%
11 Murglesnout = 15.1%
10 Sharptooth = 13.7%
7 Lavascale Catfish = 9.6%

If by "vendorfish" you mean Murglesnouts, I have to disagree with you. You can still cook those towards the 5000 your guild needs to unlock the Dragon Feast.

On a side note, there really is a Vendorfish :)

The drop rate goes down in Uldum if you fish in the river delta, because you're getting fresh and salt water fish. I was fishing at approximately 61, 87.

I fished some in twilight highlands for about 5 minutes and the drop rate sucked... Then i tried Toll Barad and the drop rate is decent.

Goto Toll barad, it doesnt matter if your faction controls it or not, get some water walking potions, get the and then go walk out onto the ocean and start fishing. actually, you probably dont need to have all that stuff.

But what kind of fisherman are you if you don't!

(edit) One thing i just took notice of, is that the fishing enchant from my hat had run out (75+ to fishing) and iv been catching less Deepsea Sagefish and more Murglesnout.

my fishing rod adds 30 to fishing on its own, so 30 plus my base fishing level (which is 500 ish) is um? you do the math. And what im saying is that, the higher you can get your fishing level, with enchants and stuff like that, the more likely it seems you'l have luck in catching this fish, But this is only what iv noticed from a few minutes of fishing.

I use this macro while farming the shimmering expanse for Deepsea Sagefish, Savage Leather, Deepsea Scale, Murglesnout, and what ever else useful that drops

/tar spotted swellfish
/castsequence reset=target/combat Immolate, Curse of the Elements, Incinerate, Fel Flame

ofcouse you can replace the spells with those of your class
you can spam the macro until you target 1 of these mobs and if you have one of those keyboards with an auto repeat/fire function (like me) you can just swim around and when you lock onto a target home in by checking your minimap for the target's position

Cataclysm open water does not necessarily drop these, I spent 10 minutes waterwalking at Abyssal Breach (60.80, 45.35) with 640 skill and caught 28 Murglesnout (87.5%) and 4 Algaefin Rockfish (12.5%), although small numbers it's statistically improbably not to catch a single Sagefish in this time.

in 15 min at Tol Barad coastline in one spot with 392 fishing skill and +20 for Seth's graphite fishing pole, I got:

So I don't think having a high fishing skill makes any difference except you get less trash.

Yes! I agree :P it is harder fishing in schools!

Some schools do not spawn unless you completely empty all the fishing schools in the area... and then there is only a chance that the right school you want spawns! @_@

You have to keep moving! and searching for the right school!

AND you have to get your stupid cast to land RIGHT IN the little swirly circle fish school

These also drop from the sea creatures in Vashir so if you go kill the various critters there you will also pick up a stack or two.

As of 4.3 there are now pools of Deepsea Sagefish. I just fished 3 pools in Twilight Highlands around Dragonmaw port and got 11 Deepsea Sagefish. Haven't checked out other Cata areas yet.

Edit: 16 Pools, 43 Deepsea Sagefish, 7 Azshara's Veil, 4 Volatile Water.

You can fish these in their own pools now. It looks like a lot of the angelfish rockfish pools were replaced in twilight highlands near highbank.

As of Patch 4.3.0 these now have fishing pools!

The only place that I have found them (so far) is in Twilight Highlands off the coast from Highbank (rough coordinates are 81, 81). If found at different locations will update.

The Algaefin Rockfish pools along the coast of Twilight Highlands seem to have all been converted into Deepsea Sagefish schools.

As of 4.3.15050 I can confirm that these now have a pool! Although I cannot find the pool link on wowhead atm. I'll check back later to add it.

These Pools have what seems to be a 7-10% chance drop Voile d'Azshara. I can only confirm that they spawn in Coastal Twilight Highlands, as I have not check any other zones as of yet.

There are now pools of Deepsea Sagefish to fish from! Great for casters cooking Severed Sagefish Head. Change was made in a patch 4.3 hotfix. I find the area around Highbank in Twilight Highlands very convenient because of its location near the two-way portal to Stormwind.

Just today I saw they FINALLY made Deepsea Sagefish Schools! Thank you Jesus! You use to have to fish for these in open water only. :(

Algaefin Rockfish no longer swim in schools, and schools of Deepsea Sagefish have taken their place along many coastlines.

Indeed a nice change, especially to those people that also fish for the Turtles All the Way Down achievement. You can, however, still fish Deepsea Sagefish in open water in both Twilight Highlands and Uldum if you prefer.

Does anyone know if these new schools are linked to Highland Guppies like the old schools with Algaefin Rockfish were?

I noticed today that there are Deepsea Sagefish schools in Twilight Highlands along the coast. Guildies told me it was a hot fix, so the schools are there and you don't have to worry about the drop rates now since schools have a 100% drop rate. But I did fish up some Azshara's Veil though

There are Deepsea Sagefish Schools now on the coast of Twilight Hihglands. I think schools of Algaefin Rockfish were replaced by it.

Today, I took down EVERY school of these (on the coastline) following this route. (click.)
(I only fished in the schools, but off course I also catch other stuff.)

This is what I got:
101 x Sagerelle abyssale
24 x Murgouilla
6 x Voile d'Azshara
9 x Sébaste nagealgue
8 x Eau volatile

Took me about an hour.
Some of the pools forced me to stand on the horde ships, and I had to take down a few of the NPC's, but I was allright.

If you have the patience to take the time and deal with the mind-numbingly boring job of fishing, then this is a stupidly easy fish to farm now. The best place to farm this is the Twilight Highlands. In 30 minutes of farming, I got 2.5 stacks of Sagefish, 4 Volatile Water, and 7 Azshara's Veil. :) Happy Fishing!

The Map here is accurate...
You need Deepsea Sagefish to make the Severed Sagefish Head ... Which when eaten gives you 90 Intel and 90 Stamina for 1 Hour,,, very good Food ,,, eating it also tops up your Health and Mana ,,, but not by much...
Deepsea Sagefish are caught by Fishing in the Twilight Higlands ,,, Ocean ...
Level 80 required...
I mostly fished Schools of Deepsea Sagefish and caught them along with some Azshara's Veil , Algaefin Rockfish and Volitale Water in the Schools,,, but you can catch them by throwing your line about anywhere in the Ocean in the Twight Highlands,,, However the Drop rate is very low that way...

I caught 87 Deepsea Sagefish and got 9 Azshara's Veil along with 10 Volital Water ...
I was Fishing the Coast line in Twilight Highlands up next door to Badlands... Not to say that I caught them next to Badlands ,,, saying the Twilight Highlands in next door to Badlands ,,, LOL ... :)

Just spent 30 minutes in Twilight Highlands, only fishing from pools of Deepsea Sagefish (and they were many!)
I've already caught 100x and am done with my little farming.
