I tried to find a build that would give me the most damage from my shadowbolts. The 2 main talents that affect this are shadow mastery and Shadow and flame, here is the maths comparing the effects of the 2 different talents (Note I have not included the 15% extra shadow damage that u could get if u got Demonic Sacrifice and saced your Succubus for flexibility sake, not everyone wants to sac their pet).

The following maths assumes u will be using one of the following builds as a base(or a variant):

Basically both have ruin, bane and improved shadowbolt.

there are 3 cases relating to Shadow Mastery either (Case 1) it adds 10% damage after spell damage or (Case 2) it adds 10% to the spell coefficient, this is according to http://www.wowwiki.com/Shadow_Bolt "Shadow and Flame and Shadow Mastery will increase the amount of shadow spell damage that applies to the spell by 20% and 10% respectively at max rank." or case 3 the 10% extra spell damage is applied before spell damage is added, i think this is the least likely case and have not included it.

On the top row we can see damage dealt by rank 11 shadowbolt with Shadow Mastery.
On the second row we can see damage dealt by rank 11 shadowbolt with Shadow and Flame.
==Case 1==
~With 500 spell damage~
572 + (500 * 1.057) = 1100.5
*1.1 = 1100.55

~With 728 spell damage(the current amount I have unbuffed, no fel armor)~
572 + (728 * 1.057) = 1341.496
*1.1 = 1315.4856

~With 1000 spell damage
572 + (1000 * 1.057) = 1629
*1.1 = 1571.9

==Case 2==
~With 500 spell damage~
572 + (500 * 1.057) = 1100.5
572 + (500 * 0.957) = 1050.5

~With 728 spell damage (the current amount I have unbuffed, no fel armor)~
572 + (728 * 1.057) = 1341.496
572 + (728 * 0.957) = 1268.696

~With 1000 spell damage
572 + (1000 * 1.057) = 1629
572 + (1000 * 0.957) = 1529

As we can see, in both cases, Shadow and Flame will yield better damage than Shadow Mastery(also note this is purly for shadowbolts and does not include damage delt by corruption etc).

According to the 3.0.3 patch notes, the damage bonus for Shadow Mastery has been increased from 10% at the cap to 15%. Affliction locks rejoice!

Improved corruption, shadow mastery, and contagion are additive
if you have all three, the formula looks like this:
(base damage + added damage from spellpower) * 1.30

Works the same way with improved CoA, contagion, and shadow mastery:
(base damage + spellpower damage) * 1.30

Malediction works differently, it's multiplicative. If you have imp. CoA, shadow mastery, contagion, and malediction, the formula for CoA looks like this:
* 1.03

Does this increase damage of shadowbolt? I guess so, but I'm not sure.
I have this talent at the moment, but I want to respec to Ruin.
Affliction doesn't have enough other nice talents to get this one, so I'll sacrifice it. Build will be 21-9-21. :)
