Wowhead Server Upgrades
Astute visitors have probably noticed that the site hasn't been operating as well as it normally does today. The reason for that is
we've migrated the site to a new set of web servers with upgraded hardware
. We're in the process of tweaking things to get everything working optimally again. In the meantime, please pardon our digital dust. :)

Cataclysm Beta: How to Log In Again
If you woke up this morning and
still
weren't able to log into the Cataclysm Beta, you weren't alone. As it turns out, Blizzard tweaked their login server but the tweak didn't exactly take effect. You'll need to tweak your install slightly before you can log in again:
Hi guys,
We've made some changes to the login server, however these changes didn't quite stick. You will not be able to login without doing the following:
Before you start, please make sure the WoW beta client is not open.
1. Navigate to the following folder in your beta install.
~\Data\enUS**
2. Open up your realmlist.wtf file with a text editing document.
3. Change the "set portal public-beta" line to "set portal public-test"
4. Save this change.
At this point you should be able to login normally.
**This folder will differ depending on which language you installed WoW Beta with. For example if you have a German install, the folder will be deDE.
If you still have issues with logging in please post here!
Thanks guys and sorry for the inconv

New Cataclysm Data!
In case the data you're already reviewing on our Cataclysm site is not enough, the first
new
batch of Cataclysm data has gone through our rigorous data screening process and is now available for review!
Check out what we've found so far on our revamped
Latest Additions
page. You'll notice that, on days where there are many entries, we now link to
a separate page
so that the Latest Additions page is less spammy. The new listing includes a tabbed interface to make your data browsing a little more pleasant.
Of course, there's more in store, so stay tuned!

Finally: A CAPTCHA Update!
Some of you may have already noticed a change to our site's
CAPTCHA
authentication (a.k.a those annoying codes you enter to post stuff). We tossed out our homebrewed solution and started using
reCAPTCHA
, which allows users of Wowhead to help digitize books. You can read the site for more information.
Before anyone complains that you now have to OMG TYPE TWO WORDS INSTEAD OF ONE AND ITS THE END OF THE WORLD, we also throttled back our CAPTCHA challenges. You should now only be prompted
once every five minutes or after five posts
, whichever comes first. That should help our more-avid users avoid
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
for a bit longer. Enjoy!
You hear that, pelf?

Security and Malware: Serious Business
Since the release of the
Completion Tracker
, there has been a significant increase in people using our
Wowhead Client
to upload data to our servers so they can see all of their character's tasty dataz. Also, as always, World of Warcraft accounts continue to be compromised, resulting in people losing items or even full characters. It's no surprise that some people who have lost accounts after downloading and using the Wowhead Client think that the client is the cause for the loss of their account.
While this may seem like a natural conclusion, I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone that
correlation does not imply causation
. It's always a good idea to do some research in cases like this to verify a possible relation between the two events. In an effort to help, I thought it might be useful to answer some questions about our site and our client.

Wowhead Client & AVG LinkScanner: Together at Last!
Users of
AVG
who have been trying to use the
Wowhead Client
will be happy to know that
the fix
we had under development has been tested and released to the public. Simply open up your client and it will update to the newest version, thus allowing you to upload tasty dataz while also using AVG's LinkScanner capability.
A special thanks goes out to the folks at AVG who were very helpful in determining the cause (even going so far as to reproduce the problem at home since they didn't have WoW installed at work). <3

Star Trek Online: Impressions From a WoW Player
World of Warcraft has the distinction of being the first MMO that I ever tried to play. Before WoW, nothing had ever interested me for two reasons:
I didn't know many people playing any particular game.
I didn't know the game's lore.
WoW overcame both of those via Warcraft III and the following that game brought with it. I've played WoW for years at this point. I find the game to be one that is "easy to learn, but hard to master". Such games appeal to me greatly.
I occasionally sample other MMOs as well (Auto Assault, Guild Wars, and EVE Online being three such examples), but nothing ever keeps my interest for very long. Largely, this is due to the problems described above. Without having the history of the realm stored in my brain and friends with which to play a game, I find it difficult to immerse myself into a game.
Star Trek Online is only the second MMO created where I know substantial parts of the game's lore before even entering the universe. I am also a science fiction nut and have been awaiting an MMO that introduced space combat in such a way that you had more control of your ship outside of "orbit this and

I HERD U LIEK ICONZ...

all over again, even though it was the other way around.
Bitter? No, not at all.
Not after I kill the wench...

So yeah, pretty pictures! We found

New Icons in PTR Build 10083
Build 10083 of the PTR was released today. In it were some small updates to spells, but nothing extravagant. I was about to end my day in The Datamines when I came across a rare boss: Iconus! As you know, you almost never see Iconus unless a new version of WoW is on the horizon, so when I saw him I was eager to take advantage of the opportunity. The skull beside his portrait worried me, but I had leveled many times since our last encounter and I figured I could take him down by myself.
I was wrong.
I gathered as many guild members as I could and we went back into The Datamines. 42 wipes, 250g in repairs, and plenty of cursing later, we downed Iconus. Nearly salivating, I looted his corpse... and found
1
new icon. :(
Furthermore, it was not an upgrade for any of us. However, it is Bind on Equip. Who wants it?

PTR Build 10072 Goodies, Supplemental
Some of you may recall that Malgayne

so we could mine them for the proverbial 'tasty dataz'. Well,

For those of you who wish to help out in this endeavor, you can send the contents of your %World of Warcraft PTR Install Directory%\Cache\WDB\enUS\ to feedback@wowhead.com.

New Items in 3.2 (Build 10026)
I know you guys are eager to see the new items in the Public Test Realm build. Well, you better set aside a good bit of time, because you have

We've also updated our filters to include the 'Added in Patch 3.2' filter so you can filter for
quests
,
NPCs
,
objects
, and of course
items
in the PTR - although you'll probably want additional filters for that last search. ;)
