By far the most important rogue skill for raid DPS regardless of spec, since it is 30% increase in white DPS. You should aim to keep this up all the time on raids.

Great for raids but terrible for PvP (a rogue's short lifespan in PvP means you should focus more on burst damage than buffing yourself)

I'm basing the following remarks on my experience as a fledgeling level 19 rogue who rolled a few days ago:

If you're fighting a mob that's not too hard to kill (ie. you never get to put 3 combo points and his remaining life is much less than your eviscerate damage), it's much better and faster to just use SnD after the first combo point.

Fighting more than one mob of the same difficulty mentioned above, you might wanna save 2 combo points before SnD.

I tend to use this with only one combo point. I haven't run the energy conservation numbers, but at 1 point, you're getting 30% haste for 9 sec (longer with talents). For every CP you have past 1, it becomes less efficent per point. Although like I said, I'm not sure if it conserves energy this way, I really don't feel like crunching the numbers and talents at this moment. Has anyone else, perhaps?

By putting 5 points in the combat tree and then 3 in the talent Improved Slice and Dice, you can increase the duration of this skill by 45%.

Slice and Dice is the single most effective ability at increasing a combat rogues dps, it should be up constantly when fighting.....it benefits subtelty/assassin also but for general grinding the burst damage from dagger specials means you rarely have to use SnD outside of an instance/raid.

For a combat rogue 50-60% of all dps is from white damage (basic auto-attack) so a 20-30% increase in speed is huge.

With the improved SnD talent, even 1 combo point is good for taking down most regular mobs around the same level as you.

Its pretty straight forward.
Yes, during raids it should be kept up 100% of the time during boss fights, along with Rupture. Considering 60% of our damage comes from white hits, this is the most important rogue ability, setting aside those necessary for CP generation.

Envenom is indeed inferior to eviscerate, as you are losing about 45 DPS after it is used until you fully rebuild your Deadly poison stack.

With t4 2p set bonus your cycle will be 1SnD/5Rupture, or in some cases 2SnD/5Rupture.

With about anything else it will probably need to be 3SnD/5Rupture.

Im in 4 pieces of t5 and i easily get away with 2SnD/5Rupture due to procs.

PUT SIMPLY:
Rogues who can manage to keep SnD and Rupture up 100% of the time during boss fights will have the best DPS. If you cannot rupture, Eviscerate.

On my rogue I raid as Mutilate (41/20/0)
Whenever I'm in a raid I go with 2xDP on my weapons, to make sure I always, always have it on whatever we're fighting. As soon as the fight starts, I wait a couple of seconds, untill I see the first DP on the target, then I use Mutilate 2 times, and whoop-di-doo, 5 CP's, in the usual scenario (with the buff to Mutilate in 2.4 I hardly ever get 2 CP's from a Mutilate).
That makes the 3-5-5 rotation pretty obsolete, seeing as I, after 2 Muti's, have 5 CP's on the target, which sometimes allows me to throw in that extra finisher, aside from SnD and Rupture, usually Envenom, since it does more damage than Evis, and DP makes for a very small amount of a raiding rogue's dps.

As mutilate, more finishers -> Find Weakness is up more -> more damage from Mutilate, but I don't know if it affects Rupture as well.
If somebody could/have done some testing on this then that'd be nice. It'd do it myself, but I'm just too darn lazy..

If you cannot rupture, Eviscerate.
Please never, NEVER use Eviscerate, kk it does scale with AP but it doesn't ignore your opponents' armor, instead if it's necessary use Envenom...

I have to admit, that as a lvl 49 assassination rogue, i never use SnD while grinding. It just isn't worth it for me, cause I open with CS, 4 or 5 point generation then KS, backstab, gouge (if not enough energy for a second backstab), eviscerate and if the mob still isn't dead, just spam SS.

it burns off rather quickly though making it a tough ability to find a use for unless you are fighting something that casts "Chill" on you...

A reply to Arkstok.

All rogue abilitys are instant ( Afaik ) , yet the global cooldown is still there.
But keep SnD up and use your main attack, like sinister strike or hemo, as the white hits between the gcd will go faster.

Not sure about the mechanics, but the duration can be buffed significantly.
Using Glyph of Slice and Dice to extend the initial 21 second (with 5 combo points)
to 24 seconds, and speccing Improved Slice and Dice. If the glyph stacks before the
talent, you can up the duration to 48 seconds. That's quite the difference from 21 seconds.

Then again, if you are Assassination spec you get Cut to the chase which makes all that
inferior =P

SnD should be considered to stack poisons easier on a heavy dispelling target ( druid, shaman ) or to not waste combo points on a nearly dead target or when you need to switch focus.

This ability (as well other buff-granting finishers such as the just announced "Recuperate") will be allowed to be used on corpses with combo points on them in patch 4.0.

100% haste is possible gear alone 30% trinkets over 30%. over60% now u can put Slice and Dice any talent tree can do it
but combat would be best for it since comet's trail has a chance of proc and other u have to use u can make that up with lightning reflexes+blade flurry
I see 3 ppl one rogue and 2 warriors stealth... sap rogue garrote warrior blade flurry then SnD let white and instant poison do all the work 3sec later dead sapped rogue like wtf im boned gouge rupture dead in 2sec. u might be as fast as hunters in range just to have fun equipe a gun and listen to the shot sound trying to catch up

back in BC i had4/5 assassination on,combat spec with 2 ceds carvers and was killing warp stalkers i opened up with CS got haste from assassination set put SnD then drums of battle. 50% haste from combat spec and SnD +assassination haste and drums of battle idk what % that is for lvl70 but i got from ceds carver 1.80 normal speed to 0.49 idk if they applied what mariosau said later after that day if not the other thing i posted on this page will be so OP

if you have combo points on multiple enemies and use slice and dice, the effect will last for the time according to the number of combo points on your current target but consume the points of all enemies without adding them together for a total amount. so, make sure you spend all spare points on dead enemies before starting a new fight.

Since patch 5.4 (I believe), Slice and Dice appears to be drawing aggro, even if stealthed. Previously I would always drop 5 combo points on a creature and then put up S&D before attacking, but now it seems as soon as I hit S&D the creature aggros even though I'm still stealthed.
