What if these crystals were a one-time thing per realm? No proof that they are. The mounts journal quote for it says "You are the only one that remembered". "You are the only one".

Ephemeral - Lasting a very short time. Lasting but one day.

In 32minutes it will be a full week from our last mount grab on the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph. Crystals have not been up ever since on my realm. This may be something to consider. My realm is Norgannon/Kargath, if anyone else on that realm happens to see them again, pls let us know. It would suck if these were a one-time thing only.

Edit: Thanks for reply below. Since you can see them while dead, highly recommend farming this with a boosted class trial or something as a survival hunter. You FLY when you are dead!

I have just found one @51.34, 37.59 under the water.

Also after some You Tube snooping I have found this video by Mmrrggll Gaming with a long list of spawn points he is revising all the time to add new points.

And to add to the huge list under that video (67,77 32.86) I just found a crystal at that point :)

Found 2 new ones today.

East of the Ley Ruins of Zarkhenar (map said Farondale, at approx 61,18) and another behind the tree to the left of Doomlord Kazrok (43, 28).

Found a new location at 58, 24 behind a big tree guarded by Feathered Prowlers, this was an elusive one because it was not in the handy notes addon. Have to say it was the last crystal to find, you can imagine my frustration.

Reins of the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph : Not so forgotten now hey!

So this new rare mount is not obtained by killing your usual Rare NPC, oh no, this time you're looking for crystals, little, Ephemeral Crystals! And to get these you need to find 5 scattered all around Azsuna!

The average spawn timer for these bad boys is 12 - 24 hours after a server reset or after the mount has already been claimed.

BUT it's a race against the clock, you need to click all 5 of these before anybody else does otherwise they'll dissapear right before your eyes!

To start off with just a single Ephemeral Crystal will spawn. Once that one is clicked a second will spawn, clicking that, a third will spawn, and so on and so on! So you may have to go and check points you've already checked because it may of magically appeared over there!

i was doing a random world quest south of aszuna when i found one crystal, knowing i needed 5 for mount i just followed the walking path and made almost a complete circle walking around the zone before i found my 5th crystal all in under 15mins straying from the path as needed if i could not see across the fields or trees then back to the path. as soon as you click 5th crystal mounts pops in your bags and a rare elite version of the mount springs from the crystal and something is said in chat don't remember what.

i did not look up the spawn locations of the crystals or anything, they are bright neon pink and easy to see far away if nothing is blocking it.. have fun!

Can confirm 55.31 55.81, this was my last crystal which i stumbled upon by chance. No one else seemed to list this so I hadn't even planned on checking here. Its against the cliff close to the water on the grass.

If you die while clicking crystals, you will have to go and re-click any crystals you had found. I died when I found 4/5 crystals and had to go and re-click the first four after I found the fifth :( lol

I found my 5 ephemeral crystals at around 10:30PM 1/20 on Dalaran. I noticed a crystal while on my 103 druid, so I switched to my 110 paladin so I could get around faster. I could NOT see the crystals on my paladin, so I switched back to my druid and they were there. Therefore, be aware that these crystals can be phased. The coordinates below were the ones I found, only one of them was known on wowhead at the time.

Heads up, there is one that spawns in a very odd spot, I found one in Leyhollow clipping in a rock at around 50.18, 23.51.

You may care to download my Long Forgotten Hippogryph AddOn from Curse. It is in the style of my well-known Netherwing Eggs AddOn and is tailored specifically for the task. Notably it correctly differentiates between Oceanus Cove / Cave / outdoor locations.

Dragonflight Ready!

There is information around which suggests that all caves have crystals. Many do but only a quarter of the total do. The AddOn documents almost 40 cave entrances for you to explore. Just in case.

Don't forget: If all five crystal locations have already been revealed then only one thorough sweep should be sufficient. Just be darned quick about it! The other situation is when you are freshly discovering the locations. In this scenario, as soon as you have found a crystal you should consider the map as "fresh" and needing to be totally explored, including that part of the map already traversed.

Don't forget: A "set" route would be nice but the practical reality of having to run away from mobs and other players on PvP servers makes a fixed route impractical. I find that on occasion when I must jump off a cliff, for example, I am redoing an area already traversed. That is actually okay if you are still revealing the crystal locations and there are other players also hunting. The key is to continually move. Never stop. When you are not moving you are not discovering and you are more likely to finish up dead. Minimise repeating areas for sure, but constantly moving is the key.

The one in the bear cave isn't visible from the outside and is just around the right corner of the shallow cave. It was the last one I needed and I flew by it a good 5 times

It seems that these crystals remain clickable now even after the first person that finds them clicks them.Just tested it with a friend of mine, he clicked a crystal and i could click it after.

If you pick up the Kirin Tor Mana saber quest in Azuna, it looks like the world is "spawned just for you", including the crystals, so pick up the quest and go hunt crystals insted of energy, and you end up with a hippo insted of quest reward. Or at least so it looks for me.

Can anyone else try this and confirm if it works ?

found a crystal @azurewing repose left behind the quest giving dragon between a small statue and a tree plz add this to the waypoint as it wasn't in there..
also there is this 1 node close to suramar when you get to close to the node the waypoints stop and you have to reset wich is very annoying but hey ! the more you know the better grtz

I'm in doubt, I found like 70 crystal sets so far, gave away most of them, now with 8.0 they enabled crz at all times in legion, but even on rp realms I can't find anything, I wonder, could they have made it so that if you already have the mount you can't see them any more as of 8.0, or did anyone who already had mount find any?

Can anyone confirm that the message that displays when you get the mount, doesn't appear zone wide anymore?

I was flying my husband around and he had 4/5 and then they were all gone but the message that says "Suddenly you hear a faint caw in the distance, and then silence," or whatever it says didn't show up. I did it a few days before him and got the message tho. We had 4/5 in an hour so it hadn't been 8 hours yet.

Also: I didn't get the crystal buff when I did it and neither did he.

I found 200 crystal sets so far, I realise only the most experienced crystal hunters could answer my question, but I'm gonna try: I did NOT find the crystal tucked in the cluster inside leyhollow cave, keep in mind, the other spot in that cave is one I still found lately, but NOT the one tucked in the cluster for months, and I do these 3-4 times a day.

I have a feeling it's been removed, did anyone see any in that cluster in the last few months? If so, how long ago?

Confirmed today:

I collected the 5 crystals without hearing any emote or gaining any buff. It wasnt until I collected the 5th that the Gryphon appeared and the item went straight into my bags. Then the emote :"You hear a faint caw in the distance and then silence" happened.

I only tried this once a month on and off since Legion, so Im glad to finally have this done. Even so there were other toons flyiing around as well despite it being a worknight and in the wee hours of the morning - and on an Oceanic med/low pop server.

CAREFULL all the coords you get are semi accurate, the crystals might be around the area!

What does it mean when you find a crystal but you can't click on it?

REMEMBER this is a RACE. you are not the only one who can see or interact with these crystals. You could be on your second find, and there could be someone else looking for their 5th. They will see the same crystals you see, they are only unclickable to you, once you click one. So if you find one you can't click, it means you got that one already, so be sure to remember where you've been already!

For those wondering, yes you can get these and get the mount while leveling in "Chromie Time" you will need Artisan Riding to be able to learn the mount though.

Just got this mount last night! The Handynotes addon put markers on my map, but what really helped me was the YouTube video “Long-Forgotten Hippogryph: Ephemeral Crystal Visual Tour” video posted by user “Requitus The Paladin”.

Starting outside of the Oceanus Cave at the ‘Shipwreck Arena’ the player flies around Azsuna, showing places that Ephemeral Crystals can spawn. I followed along and checked each location shown in the 24min video. Near the end of the video, I found a crystal. I read somewhere that the crystals spawn as they are found, idk whether or not that’s true. But since I found one, I followed the video to the end and then started the loop again. Shortly after, I found a second crystal where I had looked earlier.

I kept flying in the loop along with the video and eventually found all 5 crystals. The last one was in the cave at Azurewing Repost. I never would’ve found it without that video.

I just did this because I was there for the midsummer fires and I accidentally found 2 right away. It took me a bit because I didn't have all the information when I started. So here's some advice:

How do servers work
Do it on a server where there is noone else in the area or almost noone else. This means you have to understand how servers work.
There are 2 instances of this puzzle on every server. One for warmode on and one for warmode off. I suggest you use warmode on because nobody uses this anymore apart from leveling - especially not in old zones.
Some servers are clustered together on the same instance even if they are not on the same realm pool. for example the German Antonidas (heavy Alliance PVE) is together with Blackhand (Malganis connected heavy horde presence). BUT some rules still apply. PVE and PVP will never share an instance, neither will any of the RP realms with non RP realms.
Meaning, if you are on a RP-PVE realm you will never see and PVE PVP or RP-PVP people. not with WM on and not with WM off.
So if you have WM on on a RP-PVE realm you are a special snowflake and pretty much have every old area to yourself. You could in theory even go to realms with rare languages.
Try and do it at night if you can. Just any time that people do not play

Use /who and then adjust the numbers to 1-60 to show you everyone in the area. I had noone else around.

How do the Crystals spawn
Out of all the spawn locations possible only 5 will be active and show a crystal. No more and no less. meaning the first person to find the 5 active spawns wins the mount. The crystals will still show up for you even if you used them but they cannot be interacted with any more.

How am I doing this?
Use the addon handynotes - and activate the crystals in it. it shows small purple dots, most of them with notes. All of my crystals spawned at exact locations marked by handynotes. The /way locations marked in the comments here are good as well, but handynotes was way more accurate for me.

Use the /waypoints just to give you some indication where else you can check and to have an indication where you have looked already. I had to double and triple check because I didn't know that I needed to check EVERY point. Don't miss the one where the active crystal is just because you do not want to go into a cave or fly 10 meters off the path.

Have fast flying. I did not. Have flying unlocked is probably the first step.

Either set waypoints or markers to help you remember where you have looked already and just fly to all the points.
The trick really is to have almost no one on your server. then you have all the time in the world

So frustrating to get 4, and never find #5. I have gone all over the zone, all the ones I have already clicked are still up, but can't find #5!

Just got mine after 10-15 minutes of work. RP server. Chromie time. Warmode on. To reduce the possible number of people in the zone.
All the crystals were outside and easy to spot. A crystal is as big as a gnome. Just fly and look around using any addon that marks possible spawn points on the map.

Finally got mine today, took about an hour to find all 5 crystals. Doing it in war mode via the tips in the comments here was a good tip. Good luck to everybody still hunting for it! :)
