These spawn as mobs whose level is equal to your own.

Was just doing a Mogu Research Site and one spawned. Thought it was a bug at first then after killing him he dropped Mogu Statue Piece.

Just killed another one while in a Pandarean Dig Site and got another set of Mogu fragments. So I'm guessing it's safe to assume they'll only drop Mogu fragments unless they change it before Live. This makes sense because finding a Mogu site has been rare for me compared to Pandarean (I'd say on the level of Tol'vir perhaps).

Ancient Haunts spawn on occasion after picking up fragments in Pandaria. They have a level equal to you, and upon defeat, they drop ~7 fragments of either Pandaren race, and have a chance of dropping a relic as well.

Do note that if you're in a group, the loot from these can be assigned to any party member.

It appears to me that these guys always drop the opposite fragments of whatever dig you're in - dig up pandaren, it drops mogu and vice versa.

Yeah these guys are pretty awesome. They attack you while surveying in Pandaria and when you kill them, you get a couple pandaria archaeology fragments. Pretty sweet.

If you die while fighting the Ancient Haunt, it will despawn, and you will lose your chance for a few free segments. Do not do Pandaria archaeology if you have Resurrection Sickness!

I dual-box on a basic level (mostly follow and auto-mount) and have a max archaeologist paired for questing with a character that's in the low 200s. Discovered by accident that the low level archaeology toon can also get quest items for the quests:

Research Project: The Mogu Dynasties and
Fragments of the Past

That they couldn't get on their own. Just be sure to have the high level archy toon loot the Ancient Haunt first. Both/all partied and in-range characters get the quest items.

I've been doing my archy on my monk using Zen Flight so I wouldn't aggro mobs while surveying and kept seeing these spawn up. Finally decided to kill one on a whim instead of flying away and looted the mogu fragments. I wish I could have taken a screen shot of my face when I realized all the fragments I had been missing out on...

If you are digging under water and an Ancient Haunt spawns, you have to stand pretty much on top of it or it will evade your attacks, they don't appear to be able to move underwater.

Can drop fragments for the Mogu and Pandaren categories for archaeology in Pandaria, as well as keystones for the respective category.

It appears the droplist for this mob is as of yet incomplete, so here follows a list of the items it can possibly drop.

Confirmation required on if these actually drop Mantid fragments and keystones.

After farming for days upon days UPON DAYS for the Seeker of Knowledge, and only still needing 1 pristine pandaren item, I can safely say that these little fsckers drop no pandaren fragments, ever.

You can have multiple of these spawn in a single dig site. I had three pop up on me at a Mantid site.

Even if using the Mantid Artifact Sonic Locator, the Ancient Haunt won't drop mantid fragments, just saying...

Hey. any time im shooting for a rare solve,or just need restored artifacts, i use the item that turns all panda-land dig sites to mantid. reason being all mantid solves turn into restored artifacts. plus they are the smallest and easiest dig sites in the game (most dense areas). The reason im saying this is because recently, in legion (lvl110), i went back to panda-land needing restored artifacts, one of the Ancient Haunt popped up and was at lvl 110 with over 10m health. so make sure if you are at lvl cap, have half way decent gear because it seems older archeology content has been updated. mobs that are usually there are still the regular lvl80-90 or what ever, but any thing that spawned in related to archeology was current lvl cap + with the health to match (note they are still easy to burn down). i have not done research to see if outland, northrend, kalmidor, ECT have also been updated because i only use mantid for Tol'Vir or Fossil solvs. but i dont see why not. HAPPY DIGGIN'!

At one point they were scaling up to 110 during legion, but now as of TWW, they're back to their intended level, 35.

This NPC can be found in Townlong Steppes (61), Dread Wastes (42), The Jade Forest (41), Kun-Lai Summit (40), Vale of Eternal Blossoms (24), Krasarang Wilds (21), Valley of the Four Winds (19), Vale of Eternal Blossoms (12), and The Veiled Stair (11).
