A solid tanking trinket for any of the tanking roles since they all
mastery and dodge is a solid defensive stat.
Not 100% certain, but if I recall correctly this is the Tier 13 Valor Tanking Trinket.
Purchased at valor vendors for 1650 valor points.
This is a good trinket--not great, but not bad--which makes sense since it's so easy to get (purchased with valor points). Mastery is of course the best secondary stat for every tank.. The on-use effect is the only lame part. While dodge is never a bad thing, the problem with it is that it's unreliable. You could use this trinket and dodge the next attack that would kill you, or you could use the trinket and... not dodge. Which means you're dead. Mitigation effects (think
if you're a bear) are almost always better because they're reliable.
For magic damage fights, I would still take the Mirror over this on all tanks (even with its 359 ilvl). For fights without any major magic damage, feral druids specifically should stick with
Firelands agility + mastery trinkets
. All other tanks would probably be able to replace anything they have with this item. It won't be a huge upgrade, so don't get this baby as soon as 4.3 comes out, but if you get unlucky with drops and don't have any other major upgrades you can drop some VP on it.
I can see this being one of the best in slot for Paladin tanks at the moment. Certainly better than Soulshifter Vortex, most probably better than Indomitable Pride and Resolve of Undying is a ramping tank trinket, and nobody likes ramping tank trinkets.
I crunched out some math on how much dodge % (post diminishing returns) this trinket would give based on how much (base) dodge the user already has.
Base Dodge - Dodge %
1500 - 8.90%
2000 - 8.28%
2500 - 7.72%
In general, this trinket would give you about 8% more dodge for 15 seconds.
Sometimes I think the name of the trinket is from two Adele songs - "Set
to the Rain" and "Rolling in
Also, with the amount of mastery, this should be second BiS for a DK tank (along with
and assuming you have no access to
Master Pit Fighter
I found that I was forgetting to activate my
Fire of the Deep
. Rather than abandon the on use completely, I macroed it with
, which I use whenever it's up and I'm being hit:
/use Shield Block
/use Fire of the Deep
The cooldowns don't match (30s for Shield Block with
Bastion of Defense
, 1m30s for Fire of the Deep), but that's not a big deal. The end result is that one in three applications of Shield Block is on steroids and also gives me an extra 13% dodge before diminishing returns (~8% as Yaska points out). I know it would be better to activate them separately and distribute my damage reduction, but I had trouble integrating the Fire into my cooldown rotation. This way I benefit from its effect and can forget that I even have it.
(I'm sure other tanks have comparable cooldowns that they can work in with this.)
Oddly, with the new vendor filtering in 5.0.4, this shows up as a Hunter item.
I was excited to find this item on Wowhead, but when I found the vendor, it wasn't listed. I usually only pull up Priest items as that is my default. Then I thought that was a little hinky because people had written about it within the last year so I changed my default to "All" and there it was. Not sure why it wouldn't come up as "Priest", but there you have it. Also, you can only have one trinket of this "series" so the next best thing you can do (since trinkets are hard to find at certain levels) is get the next highest "Mastery" trinket which is "Soul Casket" from Toren Landow who is in the same alcove, just on the first step on the left-hand side.
