These are fishable in open lava.

I was running around for almost an hour hunting every Fire Ammonite pool, until eventually I thought I'd see if I could get one just from open lava. Second cast at (45, 43) and I had one.

Some useful info:

* Fished in the inland waters (lava) of Frostfire Ridge.
* The drop rate at 700 skill is around 1%.
* It appears as additional loot to the main catch.
* Using Fire Ammonite Bait does not influence the catch rate. It does however influence the main catch, so I recommend using it to maximize your profits!
* Buffs to fishing skill (enchants, lures, poles, etc.) DO influence the catch rate (changed in 6.1). So far Ive managed to get to 1089 skill and the drop rate has increased to 5-6% (average 100 casts/5 lunkers)
* Can be caught from fishing pools (as of 6.1)
* Can be caught while in a raid group. If you aren't catching one, it's just bad RNG.
* Use it to get Nat's Lucky Coin and purchase pets, a mount and other fishing goodies!

Took me 135 casts to get ONE lurker at the lava pools outside the garrison. Dont know if its bad luck or low drop. Had 1100 fishing with buffs.

20 min with Ephemeral Rod and Worm Supreme. Skill > 1000. No Catches.

Having JUST fished up 100 fish from each zone, I can say with clear memory and decent data that I fish about 45 fish per 10 minutes. Lures make great timers.

If drop rate is 1% then 20 minutes per Lunker is a fair estimate. It is probably on the low side, so 30, 40 minutes is statistically likely. Worse still, the nature of the RNG is that you can easily expect to go an hour, and 3 hour spells WILL occur. So unless this gets nerfed, expect AT LEAST...

Hat/Pole = 25 Coins = 8+ hours each
Shark Pet = 50 Coins = 16+ hours
Mount = 100 Coins = 32+ hours

All four items above = 64 hours.

I think Nat is trying to be the new Winterspring Frostsabers.

caught mine at the coast at 52.15 in about 5 casts. So it seems you can catch them at coastal waters just as well.

For those of you trying this, please don't do what I did. I'd been fishing for about 20 minutes with no sign of a lunker anywhere. I came here, and read up, and found nothing other than you can only have 5 of each type in your bag.

Nat must be working in your fishing shack for you to catch lunkers.

Now I wait for him to come off mission so I can go back to fishing.

Here's what I found out about catching lunkers:

1. You don't need 1000 skill to catch lunkers.(I've been fishing them up at 880-905), not sure if it helps with the droprates if you get higher.
2. Nat Pagle has to be assigned and working in your garrison fishing shack.
3. El said the bait doesn't affect lunker droprates.(so use it anyway to avoid catching 70% junk fish)
4. Don't fish in pools.

Edit: When 6.1 hits, the higher your fishing skill will also increase the chance of catching lunkers.

1 hour and 200 fish later, I finally got 1 of these fish. Looks like it will take a while to get enough for the pet and the mount.

For any Alliance looking for a quick spot to fish these near a flight path, take the Iron Siegeworks flight path, then head south to the pools by 85.7, 72.2
The pools aren't lava, but you can catch Fire Ammonites there.
Beats running halfway across the zone every time you need to stock up on Lunkers.

I fished for about a half hour with none and then within 8 casts I got 3. It's really just RNG. I had 1100 fishing (700 + 100 fishing pole + 100 hat + 200 lure)

Caught 5 of them in about 45 minutes at 59 25 in Frostfire Ridge. I was at 974 fishing skill when I caught all of them.

Interestingly, the last 2 I caught at exactly the same time that Nat came to visit me.

Either I'm extremely unlucky or you don't want to waste time going for Fire Ammonite Lunkers. Between today and yesterday I've fished for 3 hours, catching about 550 fish. Caught a grand total of 1 Lunker. Hopefully will have better luck with another zone. And yes, I've double checked that Nat is in the Fishing Shack and my skill varies between 900-1050 depending on what bait and items I'm using.

Yesterday, i went to Frostfire Ridge (50.0, 59.3) to fish for Fire Ammonite Lunkers with 700 fishing skill and some Worm Supreme (+200). After only 6 throws, i caught 2 Fire Ammonite Lunkers right after each other. This without any extra fishing gear, beer or bringing a portable refrigerator (cooler).

Even though i had a stroke of luck yesterday and got 2 lunkers right away, i don't find it especially difficult to fish up the lunkers (in any area). Usually i get 1-2 lunkers/1 worm supreme. The record is 4 lunkers/1 worm supreme (in Talador).

I haven't experienced any difference in the amount of lunkers i catch, regardless if i use extra fishing gear (hat, boots, fishing pole, fishing line etc) or just a simple fishing pole (in all the areas). It's approx 1% chance to catch a lunker (i guess no matter what you do/use) so Nat is right about one thing, patience is the key to catch the lunkers! ;)

i know its just RNG but i have caught 4k enormous fire ammonite and i have 68 coins, however, when i have caught them i never only catch one at a time, its always in short bursts of 2-3

Abashera’s Lunker Fishing Journal

I noticed a few people have said they averaged approximately three fish per hour. Others have lamented that "the drops are dismal," pointing out that they've been at it for an hour or two with no catch.

Rather than take guesstimates of how many lunkers drop per hour, I decided to turn on my Blizzard UI Stopwatch and record the amount of time that had past between each lunker catch, so as to get a more accurate idea of DROPS-PER-HOUR - which I believe is what the average person wants to know: “How long is it going to take me to get my mount and/or pet?”

This is the purpose of this journal, to get an accurate idea of how long it takes to get 100 lunkers for Nat’s mount. This way players can plan their fishing schedule accordingly. (Note: This journal is not however to figure out the drop-rate of lunkers, which is determined by the number of lunkers per cast, which percentage wowhead has already data-mined).

I also notice some debate on wowhead as to whether or not “BEER really brings in the big catch” as Nat Pagle suggests in his dialogue. I have to admit, when I read that, I too thought Blizzard may have added a “beer mechanic” into the game that increases the chances. Therefor, along with logging my catch times, I also split my lunker catches in half: 50 lunkers with Captain Rumsey's Lager, and 50 without.

Regarding Sample Size: 100 Lunkers may look like a small sample; but consider too that I caught 10,408 Enormous fish, along with hundreds of smaller fish, bait, lures, etcetera—so the 100 lunkers represent well over 11k casts.

If others want to duplicate this experiment and add their numbers with mine to further increase the accuracy of catches per hour, , please do. However I’m off to fish up 75 more lunkers for pet and the fishing pole; but I personally won’t be continuing this experiment, the grind is GRUESOME!

CONCLUSIONS

Captain Rumsey's Lager didn’t make any difference. In fact the drops were better without it, though marginally, likely due to RNG.

Because Captain Rumsey’s Lager didn’t make a difference, I recommend not using it for the simple reason that 1) obviously, it makes no difference, and 2) you have to stop every three minutes to drink, and that only interrupts your fishing rhythm. For the same reason, I also didn’t apply lures, hooks, or Worm Supreme, it makes you have to stop fishing to apply them, and lures and bait have a cast time to apply. The less time you spend applying buffs that don’t increase your lunker chances, the more times you can Cast & Catch, the more catches you can pull in per hour… the faster you’ll get your booty! (mount/pet/etc)

So what about Nat’s mention of drinking beer to bring in the big catch?

Nat also says “Don’t EVER go fishing without a cooler.” Are we to conclude that we need to have a Portable Refrigerator in addition to drinking Captain Rumsey’s Lager? And what about the Discarded Lucky Coin, which bears more than a remarkable resemblance to Nat's Lucky Coin? …I mean, it’s the same icon, and the name is only one word off.

But I would expect a lush to recommend beer and a cooler. Truth is, I don’t think Nat’s a good fisherman (or he’s just too drunk to fish), which is why I have to catch his food for him.

But go ahead and drink the lager if the placebo effect makes you feel good… or for the actual +10 fishing bonus.

FISHING FACTS

— ~~The Nat Pagle Follower must be assigned to your Fishing Shack to catch Lunkers~~.

— Lunkers are unique - only 5 of each type can be caught and owned before needing to return to base to turn them in.

— The addon Fishing Buddy is nice, and helps pass the time.

— I fished up between one and six Ephemeral Fishing Pole per day, and just kept equipping the newest pole.

— My fastest lunker catch was 3 seconds after the first cast; My longest time between catches was 2 hours and 18 minutes (ETERNITY). If you go over two hours, it’s just bad RNG. It evens out when you catch two or three within a few minutes or seconds.

— I alternated fishing spots (zones), catching equal amounts of all “enormous” fish types, mainly so I could send them to alts to level fishing through the Fishing Shack dailies.

— Saberfish are the best way to level cooking, I leveled up the cooking skill on four toons, and have more than enough Enormous Crescent Saberfish for the rest of my toons (if they were all lvl 100). I’m even sending some to friends so they can level cooking.

— I did the Pandaria Nat Pagle dailies at the same time, and got my rep from buddy to to Best Friend (exalted) in just four days!

— Nat Pagle is a real putz. Oh, and “GET THE HELL OFF MY RAFT NAT!” If you ever fish in the 1st person view, Nat WILL make you lose a few fish! They should have named him Gnat.

At 1100 fishing skill (Tentacled Hat, Ephemeral Fishing Pole, Worm Supreme bait, 700 base skill), I average 8 per hour.

They have dramatically increased the drop rate with higher skill. My neighbor next to me was at 750 skill, and caught 3 per hour.

Again, RNG can be merciless. Fish on, Salty!

If you decide to fish for these outside your Garrison, MAKE SURE that you walk far enough, and are actually IN Frostfire ridge, not still phased to your garrison.

I added the lunkers and minnows to the addon Rarity, and average one Lunker within 35 casts. I realized there was a problem when I fished up a Frostdeep Minnow from the lava pool out front and was lunkerless at 75 casts.

I walked 20ft over, phased into actual "Frostfire Ridge", and caught a Fire Ammonite Lunker on the 6th cast.

Pay attention to the Zone. Should say on your minimap, or walk towards the Garrison, then back out until you're phased for Frostfire Ridge.

I've been farming for Fire Ammonite Lunker and Sea Scorpion Lunker every once and then since 6.1 was released. I've recorded a data of 5 hours considering the drop rates are inaccurate due to contamination. This contamination exists because of several reasons: (i) People might be fishing without baits and without Nat Pagle assigned to their Fishing Shack Level 3, (ii) People might not have Fishing Shack Level 3, (iii) People might already have 5 Fire Ammonite Lunkers in their bags which prevents them from fishing Lunkers and (iv) People might have fished before 6.1, where Fishing skill level didn't affect Lunker drop rates. There might be more reasons that I might've overlooked, but my point is that the drop rates that are displayed are much lower than actual rates. So I'm going to share my data and then let you know of some statistics regarding it.

Some explanations before I give my data: First number is the number of casts that I've fished during a Worm Supreme's duration, whereas the second number displays the number of Fire Ammonite Lunker or Sea Scorpion Lunker I caught. All of them were done with 1100 skill if not more (I'll explain that part later). I used Ephemeral Fishing Pole and Hightfish Cap and Worm Supreme as I previously stated. One more thing I think I need to mention is that I never allowed Lunker clipping, that is to say I never cast the Pole when I had 5 Lunkers of a specific kind in my inventory. Anyway, here goes:

Casts in Schools are very rare because I never specifically looked for them, but if the Pole landed in some I didn't recast, so I estimate my Pool catch ratio to be ~2%. Also, I very rarely missed when the fish hit the Bobber. For those lucky 10 minutes where I caught 5 Lunkers, that happened at 9 minutes at which point I stopped casting immediately.

I said I had 1100 Fishing skill minimum earlier, this was due to "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish. When you're fishing for Sea Scorpion Lunkers you catch "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish every once and then. This item was buffed in 6.1, now you also get 100 Skill bonus. Considering Lunker catch rates are affected by Fishing skill this comes in handy, so a good idea would be creating a Premade Group in Group Finder and get someone else to fish with you. What's more: the effect stacks, so if you use "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish on someone and they use it on you, you'll get 200 Fishing skill bonus. In the worst case, you can apply this item to your Bodyguards before it expires.

As for statistics, I've got 1248 casts over 299 minutes, which means a cast takes ~14.5 seconds. I caught a total of 55 Lunkers, which means you catch ~0.18 Lunkers per minute or ~4.5% per cast. This also translates to ~1.8 Lunkers per Worm Supreme. So, to get Reins of the Crimson Water Strider you would need to fish for ~9.5 h, or for the duration of ~56 Worm Supremes. Naturally, the amount of time required Land Shark and Sea Calf is half of what is required for the mount, i.e. ~5h.

Hello fishermen!

I decided to analyze how many casts it would take for me to get 5 Fire Ammonite Lunker

My base skill was 700.
For fishing skill buffs I used:

Hightfish Cap which give +100 fishing skill.
Ephemeral Fishing Pole which give +100 fishing skill.
Worm Supreme which give +200 fishing skill.

That made a total of 1100 fishing skill. I also used Fire Ammonite Bait during this test. This item will not improve the catchrate of the lunker tho.
I fished in Frostfire Ridge at (36.86),(38.04). At this spot there will be no mobs interupting your fishing. (I got this information from JamesDevlin).
I didn´t drink anything to increase the catchrate.
I got 5 Fire Ammonite Lunker in 20 minutes.
On my 41st, 67th, 72th, 76th and 86th cast.
My catchrate this try was around 5,81%. (Math: 5/86)

I finally sat down and tried fishing up one of these yesterday. I have max fishing skill and I used a 10 minute +200 lure on a Kalu'ak fishing pole with a +5 fishing line, Fire Ammonite bait, and a +5 fishing hat to bring my fishing skill to a total of 975. In 10 minutes, I had fished up 3 of these Lunkers just to the northwest of my Garrison. A pool of Fire Ammonite appeared twice during this time period and I caught two Lunkers out of it, the other being from open water. Hope this helps.

So when I have been doing my Lunkers for the Fire Ammonite fish I found in the Bone Slag of Frostfire Ridge has been a good spot. If there are pools there I would tap those first using the Fire Ammonite Bait, Worm Supreme, and Pandaren Plum Wine from the Grand Expedition Yak.

In the beginning I noticed Nat would come to you and would tell you when fishing you need patience and beer.

So with the wine I get smashed, and drunk to get the lunkers.

Within 2-3 hours with doing this I had gotten roughly around 10 or so Fire Ammonite Lunkers.

You can now have more than 5 Fire Ammonite Lunker at you at any time.
This also concern the others, such as:
Blind Lake Lunker, Blackwater Whiptail Lunker, Fat Sleeper Lunker,
Sea Scorpion Lunker, Jawless Skulker Lunker, Abyssal Gulper Lunker,
and the new one Felmouth Frenzy Lunker.

Why isn't there a "Currency for" tab on wowhead for this item. I see from comments that this is used to purchase many things including a mount! But which mount? I'm trying to see if it's worth my time to fish and get Nat Pagle, but the tab I was looking for doesn't exist yet to show me the spoils of fishing these bad boys.

Maybe ya'll can upvote this to get wowhead to make the appropriate tab? Thank you (no, I don't care about votes) Or am I just missing something? Some other mat is used instead? I have no idea. Thanks all for any help

Just unlocked my fishing shack level 3 on 22/09/2015 patch 6.2.2

I immediately went outside my horde garrison to the North exit to catch some lunkers.
Here are my statistics using Fishing buddy addon

Enormous Fire Ammonite 29: 57.4%
Enormous Crescent Saberfish 12: 25.5%
Fire Ammonite Lunker 5: 10.6%
Fire Ammonite Bait 2:4.3%
Burnt Clump 1: 2.1%

Nat Pagle was assigned to the fishing shack.
I had 1105 Fishing skill using

I was using the zone buff Shamanstone: Touched by Fire. Not sure if this makes a difference or not, but thought it worth mentioning since I was after FIre Ammonite.

While horde apparently cannot catch Lunkers while phased into their garrison, alliance don't phase and can catch them even if the map/chat channel text says "Frostwall". Safe from ganking.

Tips for catching lunkers....As if we still needed to prove to ole Nat that we're still best friends. ;-)

1. Leave Nat working in the fishing shack. You can't catch these if he isn't there. ~~But bring a follower with you on the trip. If no players are around, you can throw the "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish to get an extra 100 skill.~~ "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish does not drop in lava. I assume this is why we sometimes see Burnt Clump.

2. Spend a little time fishing in your garrison for Frostdeep Minnow. Throw them into your garrison's waters and kill the cavedweller that spawns. Among other things that are less likely, he will drop things like Ephemeral Fishing Pole, Worm Supreme, Hightfish Cap, or Tentacled Hat.

3. Use the Ephemeral Fishing Pole and put a Worm Supreme on it. Assuming you are at max level fishing, your skill level is now at 1100 as a base. "Fragrant" Pheromone Fish is simply a bonus at this point as skill level affects drop rate now.

4. Pandora, Spotify, or whatever provider you choose, make sure you have some sort of noise in the background to regulate your sanity while enduring the sport that is known as fishing in WOW. ;-)

I have approximately 6700 casts in various locations across Draenor since starting to use this method and my current average on lunkers sits just shy of 6%. It still isn't for the week at heart but I find that in two hours, I generally go back to Nat with 20-23 of them. (There is no longer a limit of 5 that can be carried.)

Then replace 'X' according to which type of lunker you're handing in:
1 - Fire Ammonite Lunker
2 - Jawless Skulker Lunker
3 - Fat Sleeper Lunker
4 - Black Lake Lunker
5 - Blackwater Whiptail Lunker
6 - Abyssal Gulper Lunker
7 - Sea Scorpion Lunker
8 - Felmouth Frenzy Lunker

It'll work like this:
Right-click Nat Pagle, spam macro 3 times, and you've handed in 1 lunker.
It'll go faster than handing them in manually, and you won't have to download some addon either.

LOL pools are the best for lunkers i just got 6 in like 30 min just running around in Frostfire looking for fire ammonite pools just got 3 in 1 pool LOL

After farming weeks to get the Crimson water walking mount, and still farming, I have to say that there appears to be diminishing returns on these items. Within the first half hour of farming I will on average fish 7 - 11 lunkers. After that, the drop rate is significantly worse with the same fishing level of 1100 (I would only catch one an hour or none at all). These same DR effects also appear to apply on the Lunarfall Carps.

I have a ticket open with Blizzard awaiting a confirmation on the DR for these items. If they share anything relevant I will be sure to post here.

I would also like to add that for someone farming for the Crimson walking walking, it will take quiet sometime due to the fact that you must increase your rep with Nat which takes significantly longer than fishing up the lunkers (with the results outlined above).

My two cents, some datas...
You will find in the comments more faster way to collect than mine but I'm in no rush and just wanted to share some datas to give you an 'idea' of the numbers.
First, since I don't really care about the kind of fish, I went to the closest fishable spot, that is the lava outside your garrison. No specific spot, just along the eastern edge of the pool.
I have been using Fishing Buddy addon, Nat's hat, the Arcanite fishing pole coupled with High test eternium line and the Boots of the bay. Also used the Worm supreme buff and the Fire ammonite bait which brought my skill up to 965. I've sometimes added the Ephemeral fishing pole or Tentacled hat if I dropped them from dailies. And here's the results for 1000 catches:
- Enormous fire ammonite: 468 / 78.6%
- Enormous crescent saberfish: 209 / 14.3%
- Burnt clump: 54 / 5.4%
- Fire ammonite bait: 50 / 7.1%
- Fire ammonite lunker: 27 / 2.7%
- Trash loot/smaller fishes/quest items: 14 / 1.3%

Conclusion: looks like a roughly a 4000 catches will be needed if I keep this up, granted the skill keeps hovering between 965/1100ish. Hope this helped

I don't think the limit of 5 is in the game anymore. I have just fished my 6th in my bags. It didn't seem to take any more time than the first 5 took.

The upside for this(for me at least) is that the turn in quests are not dailies, they are repeatable. The down side is that you're at the mercy of RNG, so it might take a while to fish them up sometimes.

I don't use buffs except for the Fire Ammonite Bait and that isn't needed to get the lunker.

Now that WoD is over, Worm Supreme are in very low supply. So I was trying to figure out if it was worth it to use all these expensive baits to boost my fishing skill or not. I did a quick experiment (I only did a 10 minute session for each which equaled between 35-40 casts) and these are my findings (This would apply to all Lunkers in all zones.):

Summary: Fishing skill from 800 - 1195 made NO difference on Lunker drop rate. It seems there is a cut-off somewhere between 860 and 1035 where you will stop getting Crescent Saberfish and Jawless Skulker. In my opinion, it is not worth it to boost your fishing level more than whatever gear you happen to have if all you are going for is Lunkers. The cost of the baits (high) vs the market price of the Enormous fish (low) makes it not worth worrying about.

You can get an unlimited amount now. There's no longer a limit to five in your inventory at once. However, if you're a completionist, you should fish at least one up of each type and turn it in so Blizzard records your character as having completed that quest.

I decided to fish until I got 40 of these. On the way to that, in addition to other stuff, I got 61xBurnt Clump (close to the same drop rate).

Wanted to type up a guide of my experience on Nat's Lunkers as of Shadowlands patch 9.1

Nat Pagle in this incarnation has 6 friendship tiers
Stranger
Acquaintance
Buddy
Friend
Good Friend
Best Friend

Each friendship level is 8,200 reputation, and each lunker gives 385 reputation per turn in. It takes 22 lurkers for each friend tier. As of patch 9.1 you can carry all 22 lunkers required for each friend tier in your bag at a time (assuming your fishing up the same one as I did) and each Lunker has a less than 2% drop chance (I don't want to say 1% because I feel like fishing items and level play a huge part in this, When I would forget to apply my lures and other fishing items it would take ages to get a lunker until I reapplied everything and started getting them more frequently, so don't forget your lures and lagers!). 1 lunker turn in gives 1 "Nat's Lucky Coin" and the 385 rep and the coins can be used to buy rep based items.

Nat's Drinking Hat - Purchased at "friend" status, it increases your fishing by 8 and has the ability to attach a special lure to your pole increasing your fishing by another 10 for 10 minutes
Cost 25: coins

Draenic Fishing Pole - This pole is purchased at "friend" status and increases your fishing skill by 13, and can also apply a special lure increasing your fishing by 10 for 10 minutes as well. This pole is Alliance only
Cost: 25 coins

Left Shark - Shark pet purchased at "good friend" status
Cost: 50 coins

Sea Calf - Sea calf pet purchased at "stranger" status (couldn't find on him where it said any status of friendship required so I'm assuming it's at stranger but if not please let me know and ill edit)

Angler's Water Strider - Mount equipment that doesn't require a friendship tier, gives your mount the ability to walk on water
Cost 47 Gold 58 Silver

Reins of the Crimson Water Strider - Mount purchased at "best friend" status
Cost 100 coins

Nat's Draenic Fishing Journal - Permanently increase your skill in Draenor fishing by 25 up to a max of 100
Cost 25 coins

All in all, it takes about 110 Lunkers to get all the way to best friend status with this Nat Pagle. When you have reached "best friend" you also receive the famed "Nat's Fishing Chair" in your mailbox as well! it is essentially a mirrored copy of the TCG fishing chair.

As always the level 3 fishing shack is still gated behind the achievement "Draenor Angler" which is still essentially the same, catch 100 enormous fish for each area, which unlocks the blueprints to the level 3 fishing shack. If you have already achieved this on another character and want to get the hat on an alt, this is not required a second time, and as of patch 9.1, you only need Draenor fishing skill level 80 for the quest "Luring Nat" to show up instead of max level like before.

High Mountain Tauren have a Racial Passive that allows them a chance to loot additional meat and fish called Waste Not, Want Not. While fishing in Frostfire Ridge just outside of my garrison, I caught a Fire Ammonite Lunker, the passive procced and gave me a second Lunker in the same cast. Might not be a huge advantage, but catching two lunkers instead of one is definitely a win.

Here is some addition information from what I've experienced, the drop rate might be higher or I might just be a little bit on the lucky side.
I've fished in pools only in Frostfire Ridge to get Fire Ammonite Lunker.

After some time this is what I've got:
224x Enormous Fire Ammonite
22x Fire Ammonite Lunker

Which means the drop chance for me was 9.82% chance of getting Fire Ammonite Lunker.

Draenor fishing is max(100 skill level) and the following items were used:
Hightfish Cap
Ephemeral Fishing Pole
Worm Supreme

I can't be certain of my luck or that the drop chance has increased after the profession levels were split.

Hopefully this helps anyone trying to get Best Friends with Nat Pagle.
