Crushing Darkness

At the end of the cast bar, the Creature in the Shadows will smash a limb into the ground at the center of the marked location

All players within 8 yards will take moderate damage

While Crushing Darkness is not interruptible, it can be dodged, as the Creature in the Shadows does not move while casting

Tanks should face the Creature in the Shadows away from the rest of the raid and dodge each others' Crushing Darkness area of effect

Hateful Rebuke

Hateful Rebuke lobs a missile at every player in the zone

Each Hateful Rebuke missile deals light damage to the targeted player and all players within 7 yards

If the raid is stacked, this can lead to fatal damage, especially when other dangerous adds are active

The raid should spread out to minimize splash damage from the Hateful Rebuke

They do not need to be tanked, as they deal no melee damage

Each Shadow Pounder will chain cast Nightmare Bolt on random targets

Nightmare Bolt deals moderate single-target damage

If several Shadow Pounders target the same player, that player may take spiky, possibly fatal, damage

Healers should top injured players up quickly to avoid Nightmare Bolt deaths

When both Shadow Pounders and Nightmare Amalgamations are present, use healing cooldowns to recover from raid damage and prevent spike deaths

Xavius Abilities & StrategyXavius

Each phase has a different set of mechanics that players must master

Once consistent mechanic is that, each time Xavius reaches 100 Energy, he will summon adds

Some of these adds are high-priority burst targets, particularly during Phase 1 and 2

These adds are infrequent and players will spend most of their time DPSing Xavius

Corruption MechanicsDread Abomination

The Dread Abominations will cast Corruption: Crushing Shadows about every 10 seconds

This creates a large pink circle where the Abomination will smash its limb into the ground

Players at the center of the circle (near the edge of the encounter area) will take extremely high damage

The damage is reduced the further away you are from the center

The range is massive, so you cannot fully outrange the ability

Run as far away from the center of the AoE as is feasible

Corruption: Unfathomable Reality

Smaller pink swirls will spawn in random locations around the encounter area every few seconds

After 3 seconds, a plume of Nightmare flames will erupt from the targeted locations

This deals moderate damage to players within 6 yards of the eruption

Players struck by this damage will also gain 5 Corruption

If a Corruption: Unfathomable Reality zone spawns near you, move away

Corruption: Descent into Madness

For 20 seconds, the player's damage and healing is increased by 150%

When this buff wears off, the player gains Corruption: Madness, and becomes mind-controlled

The mind-controlled player transforms into a Creature of Madness, and will attack players with Smash

The mind-controlled player's health is increased by 150%

Creatures of Madness are immune to all CCs except stuns

On Normal difficulty, a player's Corruption slowly decays

Some sources of Corruption are unavoidable, but most can be avoided if the raid executes the strategy properly

Most players should be able to avoid becoming mind-controlled

It is likely that some players will reach 100 Corruption during the final phase of the fight, which is a race-against-time burn phase

Those players should take advantage of the 20-second Corruption: Descent into Madness buff and focus DPS on Xavius to attempt to kill him before transforming

Note that battle resurrections do not clear a player's Corruption.Corruption: Descent into MadnessThe DreamDream of Ysera

The Dream of Ysera appears when Xavius reaches 95% health, and again when he reaches 60% health

This is right at the start of Phase 1, and again at the start of Phase 2; Phase 3 has no Dream

Half of the raid enters the Dream each time, so every player will see the Dream mechanic

Ysera will take an even split of roles so there are always tanks and healers in the Dream

The players taken for the first Dream are chosen at random - the raid cannot influence which players are selected

Dream Simulacrum

Damage taken and Corruption gained while the player is a Dream Simulacrum is "erased" when the player's Dream ends

Additionally, any cooldowns used during the Dream are restored when the player awakens

Healers should note that any mana they spend during the Dream is refunded when they awaken

Dream Simulacrum

The player takes "fatal" damage

The player reaches 100 Corruption, and would become mind-controlled

In the latter case, the player will benefit fully from the 20-second Corruption: Descent into Madness buff

Dream Simulacrum

Dreaming tanks should taunt the Corruption Horror or taunt Xavius during Nightmare Infusion

Dreaming healers should be the primary dispellers of tank debuffs

Dreaming players should intercept Lurking Terrors, soak Corruption Meteors, and absorb Tainted Discharge pools

For more information on these mechanics, see the Phase 1 and Phase 2 sections below

Corruption: Descent into Madness

For players who are Dreaming during Phase 1, this is almost always a full Corruption reset, since the first Dream occurs so quickly that players probably didn't have a chance to gain Corruption.

These players must be careful with their Corruption gains in Phase 2, as it will not be cleared again during the encounter

Players who are not Dreaming during Phase 1 should be careful to minimize their Corruption gains in Phase 1, so that when they emerge from their Dream their Corruption is low

Corruption threshold mechanicsPhase 1: The Descent Into MadnessLurking TerrorCorruption HorrorNightmare Blades

Xavius gains 5 Energy per second, and will therefore summon adds every 20 seconds

Usually, Xavius summons a Lurking Terror, who will appear under a random player with Lurking Eruption

However, 1 minute into the fight, and again at 2:20, Xavius will instead cast Manifest Corruption

These are the 3rd and 7th times that Xavius reaches 100 Energy

Manifest Corruption deals heavy raid-wide damage and creates a Corruption Horror add

Lurking EruptionTormenting Fixation

Lurking Eruption appears suddenly under a random player and deals moderate damage

Lurking Eruption prefers ranged players and will not target players in the Dream

The Lurking Eruption damage splashes to all players within 6 yards, so the raid should be spread out

The Lurking Terror spawns instantly, but is inactive for approximately 4 seconds before casting Tormenting Fixation

Tormenting Fixation causes the Lurking Terror to endlessly pursue its target

anyTormenting Infection

Tormenting Infection deals heavy damage and grants the player 15 Corruption

The player targeted with Tormenting Fixation should kite the Lurking Terror away from other players

A player in the Dream should then intercept the Lurking Terror and soak the Tormenting Infection damage and Corruption gain

Lurking EruptionDream SimulacrumTormenting InfectionManifest Corruption

The Corruption Horror is a priority target that must be tanked and killed quickly

Every 20 seconds, the Corruption Horror will cast Corrupting Nova, damaging all players in the raid and giving them 5 Corruption

Every 12 seconds, the Corruption Horror casts Tormenting Swipe at its target

Tormenting Swipe deals heavy damage to all players in front of the Horror, and gives those players 10 Corruption

The Dreaming tank should taunt the Corruption Horror when it spawns and bring it near the boss for cleave damage

Face the Corruption Horror away from the raid

All DPS should swap to the Corruption Horror immediately and burn it down quickly to limit Corrupting Nova casts

Manifest CorruptionNightmare Blades

Every 15 seconds, Xavius chooses two targets for Nightmare Blades

Tanks are ineligible targets; otherwise, any player could be chosen, including players already in the Dream

The targets gain the Nightmare Blades debuff and are marked with a red arrow

After 4 seconds, a wall of Nightmare Blades will spawn and traverse a straight line through the two targets

Any players struck by these Nightmare Blades will take heavy damage and be knocked back

Nightmare Blades

The targeted players must move out of the raid to avoid striking other players with the Nightmare Blades wall

Run out to the side of the boss so that melee DPS targets can take a short path

Particularly avoid striking the tanks with the Nightmare Blades

Consider dropping a world marker to designate which side of the room players with Nightmare Blades should run to, since the room itself is featureless

Darkening Soul

Darkening Soul is applied to the current tank approximately every 8-10 seconds

The DoT damage is heavy and tanks will have to swap fairly frequently to avoid taking fatal damage or running healers out of mana

The Darkening Soul debuff has no duration, and can only be removed by dispels

When Darkening Soul is dispelled, it deals heavy Darkened Discharge damage to all players within 25 yards of the dispelled tank

In addition, the dispelling healer takes Darkened Tainting damage and gains 25 Corruption

Darkening Soul

Run to the opposite side of the room from the Nightmare Blades target

Most groups' tanks swap at 3-4 stacks, which is approximately every 30 seconds

Use heavier cooldowns at higher stacks of Darkening Soul

Try to have a cooldown of some sort active when dispelled, as Darkened Discharge is extremely heavy damage

notDarkening SoulDarkening Soul

Each healer can only dispel 4 times before their Dream will end due to reaching 100 Corruption

If more than one healer is in the Dream, be sure to cycle dispelling duties so both healers stay in the Dream for a longer period of time

If only one healer is in the Dream, non-Dreaming healers can occasionally help dispel since, when they get Dream in Phase 2, their Corruption will be cleared

Phase 2: From the ShadowsInconceivable HorrorCorruption MeteorBonds of TerrorCall of Nightmares

Xavius will reach 100 Energy every 40 seconds

The number of Inconceivable Horrors he will spawn depends upon raid size

The Inconceivable Horrors spawn at the edges of the encounter area and walk slowly toward Xavius

Dark Ruination

Dark Ruination empowers Xavius to emanate waves of damage once every second

Dark Ruination damage is moderate, and players also gain 1 Corruption per tick

Xavius will do this for each Inconceivable Horror that reaches him

This has the potential to deal fatal damage or overload the raid's Corruption bars if too many adds reach Xavius

Tainted Discharge

After 15 seconds, Tainted Discharge pools will spawn a new Inconceivable Horror add

Players can prevent this by standing in Tainted Discharge pools and absorbing them

Doing this causes moderate Shadow damage each second and also grants 4 Corruption

Only Dream Simulacrum players should soak up the Tainted Discharge pools

It is important to prevent Inconceivable Horrors from respawning, so that the raid can focus more DPS on Xavius

Tanks can drag Xavius away from approaching Inconceivable Horrors if necessary

Corruption Meteor

Tanks cannot be targeted by this, but all other players are valid targets

The targeted player is marked with a black arrow, and draws a red circle to depict the radius of the Corruption Meteor attack

After 5 seconds, a Corruption Meteor will strike the targeted player, dealing extremely heavy damage and generating 40 Corruption

This damage and Corruption is split evenly between all players inside the Corruption Meteor's area of effect

Dream SimulacrumCorruption Meteor

Mark a location for the Corruption Meteor target to run to

Players in the Dream should be near this location so that they do not have to move much to help soak

Players who are not in the Dream should stay away

Healers should use cooldowns to recover from the Corruption Meteor damage when necessary

Blackening Soul

Blackening Soul is applied to the current tank approximately every 8-10 seconds

The DoT damage is heavy and tanks will have to swap fairly frequently to avoid taking fatal damage or running healers out of mana

The Blackening Soul debuff has no duration, and can only be removed by dispels

When Blackening Soul is dispelled, the tank gains Blackened, taking 150% increased Physical damage for 30 seconds

Tanks should avoid taking Xavius's melee attacks while debuffed with Blackened

A pool of Tainted Discharge is also formed where the tank was dispelled, which must be soaked to prevent an Inconceivable Horror spawn

In addition, the dispelling healer takes Blackened Tainting damage and gains 25 Corruption

BlackenedNightmare InfusionTainted DischargeBlackening Soul

Each healer can only dispel 4 times before their Dream will end due to reaching 100 Corruption

If more than one healer is in the Dream, be sure to cycle dispelling duties so both healers stay in the Dream for a longer period of time

Nightmare Infusion

Xavius gains this buff once a minute, and it lasts for 30 seconds or until 6 melee strikes/30 Corruption has been applied

The Dream Simulacrum tank should taunt Xavius during this time to safely eat the Corruption gain

Depending on timing, the Nightmare Infusion tank may gain a stack of Blackening Soul

Tanks should plan around this when scheduling their tank swaps, so that the Dream tank's Blackening Soul stacks do not get too high

Tainted DischargeDark RuinationPhase 3: World of DarknessBloodlustHeroismTime WarpWrithing Deep

Xavius gains 5 Energy per second, so this occurs every 20 seconds

Writhing Deep summons several Nightmare Tentacle adds

The number summoned depends upon the number of players in the raid

Nightmare Tentacles cast Nightmare Bolt at a random non-tank target every 3 seconds

Nightmare Bolt deals moderate damage, but increases the target's Corruption by 3

Nightmare Bolt cannot be interrupted, and the Nightmare Tentacles are immune to CC effects

Nightmare Tentacles are immobile and do not need to be tanked as they have no melee attack

Tanks should drag Xavius to nearby Nightmare Tentacles so that efficient cleave abilities can kill them

Multi-DoTting Nightmare Tentacles is beneficial especially if this increases your single-target damage via procs or resources

It is not important to kill every Nightmare Tentacle

The goal is to reduce raid damage and Corruption gain just enough to avoid premature deaths or mind controlled players

Nightmare Blades will occur every 33 seconds

Corruption Meteor occurs approximately every 45 seconds

Tanks are afflicted with Blackening Soul, which still affects healers with Blackened Tainting when dispelled, and still debuffs the tanks with Blackened

Xavius buffs himself with Nightmare Infusion every minute

There will be no more Dream mechanic to help manage Corruption

The raid should stack up so that Corruption Meteor is easy to heal through and spreads its Corruption over the largest number of targets possible

Players targeted by Nightmare Blades must run out to the side to avoid hitting the rest of the raid

The lowest-Corruption healer should dispel Blackening Soul on each tank swap

The lowest-Corruption tank should taunt Xavius for each Nightmare Infusion buff

Corruption: Descent into MadnessRanor of <Temerity>Strategy SummaryPhase 1:Phase 2:Phase 3:Nightmare BladesCorruption Meteor

Phase 1:
The raid should be loosely spread out behind Xavius

The two Xavius tanks should swap at 3-4 stacks of Darkening Soul

The Dream Simulacrum tank should pick up the Corruption Horror and tank it near the boss, facing away from other players

All DPS should switch to the Corruption Horror when it spawns

Players targeted by Nightmare Blades should run out to the side

Players targeted by Tormenting Fixation should kite Lurking Terrors into Dream Simulacrum players

Dream Simulacrum healers should dispel tanks when they reach a safe distance

Dream Simulacrum DPS should intercept Lurking Terrors and soak the Tormenting Infection

Ranged DPS and healers should split into two groups, right and left of the boss

Dream Simulacrum healers/DPS should stay near the middle

Tanks should swap at 3-4 stacks of Blackening Soul, and run slightly out for dispels to drop their Tainted Discharge

Dream Simulacrum healers should dispel tanks when they reach a safe distance

Players linked together by Bonds of Terror should run to one another

Players targeted by Corruption Meteor should run to the middle to split the damage with Dream Simulacrum players

When Inconceivable Horrors spawn, all DPS should switch to the nearest targets and kill them quickly

Dream Simulacrum players should absorb the Tainted Discharge left behind when Inconceivable Horrors die or when tanks are dispelled

A Dream Simulacrum tank should taunt when Xavius is buffed by Nightmare Infusion

Use Bloodlust/Heroism/Time Warp when this phase begins

Focus DPS on Xavius, but use efficient AoE/cleave to kill nearby Nightmare Tentacles when possible

The raid can stack behind Xavius to split Corruption Meteor as evenly as possible

Players targeted by Nightmare Blades should run out to the side

Tanks should swap at 3-4 stacks of Blackening Soul, and make sure the lowest-Corruption tank takes the Nightmare Infusion

Healers with the lowest Corruption should dispel tanks

Use healing cooldowns to efficiently heal through the high raid damage

Tanks can use cooldowns more aggressively since they will be tanking Xavius less frequently, allowing healers to dispel less frequently

This allows healers to stay in the Dream longer during Phases 1 and 2

Managing tank swaps around the Corruption Horror and Nightmare Infusion mechanics becomes more forgiving

During Phase 3, three tanks can spread out the Nightmare Infusion's Corruption gains to lower the chance that any tank will succumb to Corruption: Madness

Tank Responsibilities

Phase 1:
Take as many stacks of Darkening Soul as you can survive, using heavier cooldowns at higher stacks

Run away to a designated location for Darkening Soul to be dispelled

Only the Dream tank should taunt and tank the Corruption Horror

Face the Horror away from the raid so Tormenting Swipe does not hit any other players

Take as many stacks of Blackening Soul as you can survive, using heavier cooldowns at higher stacks

The Dream tank should taunt Xavius for the duration of the Nightmare Infusion buff

Move Xavius away from approaching Inconceivable Horrors if possible

Time tank swaps so that a different tank is tanking for each of Xavius's Nightmare Infusion buffs

Drag Xavius near clumps of Nightmare Tentacles only if it is convenient to do so

Use cooldowns frequently to help the healers, as raid damage during this phase is very high

Corruption: Crushing ShadowsCorruption: Unfathomable RealityDamage-Dealer Responsibilities

Phase 1:
All DPS should switch to the Corruption Horror when it spawns

Move away from Lurking Eruption to avoid Tormenting Infection damage

If targeted by Nightmare Blades, quickly move out to the side of the raid group

Stay far away from the designated location to dispel the tank's Darkening Soul debuff

All DPS must switch immediately to the Inconceivable Horrors near them

Melee DPS should attack the Inconceivable Horrors near the boss, while ranged should attack the ones behind the raid

If targeted by Corruption Meteor, move to the designated location so Dream Simulacrum players can help soak its damage

Only attack Nightmare Tentacles that spawn within comfortable cleave/AoE range, or with multi-DoT abilities

Mostly maximize your single-target DPS on Xavius to defeat the fight before the entire raid succumbs to Corruption: Descent into Madness

Use your most powerful cooldowns here to align with Bloodlust/Heroism/Time Warp

If targeted by Nightmare Blades, quickly move out to the side of the raid group

If targeted by Corruption Meteor, stay stacked in the raid so the maximum number of players can help soak its damage

Corruption: Crushing ShadowsCorruption: Unfathomable RealityHealer Responsibilities

Use cooldowns on tanks at high stacks of Darkening Soul or Blackening Soul

Use raid cooldowns for Manifest Corruption and Corruption Meteor damage, and again during Phase 3 as often as possible

During Phases 1 and 2, only dispel Darkening Soul/Blackening Soul if you are in the Dream Simulacrum

If no healers are in the Dream Simulacrum, or during Phase 3, the healer with the lowest Corruption should dispel tanks

Players targeted by Nightmare Blades, Corruption Meteor, or Bonds of Terror, and players over 33 Corruption, will require additional healing

Move away from Lurking Eruption to avoid Tormenting Infection damage

If targeted by Nightmare Blades, quickly move out to the side of the raid group

If targeted by Corruption Meteor, move to the designated location

At all times, if you have more than 33 Corruption, run away from the Corruption: Crushing Shadows effects

At all times, if you have more than 66 Corruption, move away from the Corruption: Unfathomable Reality zones

"Dream Team" ResponsibilitiesDream Simulacrum

During Phase 1:
Tank: Tank the Corruption Horror off to one side of the raid

DPS: Intercept the Lurking Terror adds to protect others from Tormenting Infection

Healer: Dispel the Darkening Soul debuff after each tank swap

Tank: Taunt Xavius when he is buffed by Nightmare Infusion

DPS: Stand in the Tainted Discharge puddles that form after killing Inconceivable Horrors, and help split Corruption Meteor damage

Healer: Dispel the Blackening Soul debuff after each tank swap

Dream SimulacrumManifest CorruptionCorruption MeteorCorruption: Crushing ShadowsCorruption: Unfathomable RealityLooking For Raid DifficultyHeroic DifficultyBonds of TerrorBonds of Terror

Tanks cannot be targeted by this, but all other players are valid targets

Each targeted player takes light to moderate periodic damage

Bonds of Terror is removed when the two marked players come within 3 yards of each other

Linked players should run together, but since this mechanic does not give Corruption, it does not take high priority over other mechanics

Mythic DifficultyTormenting DetonationTormenting Infection

Tormenting Detonation deals heavy damage to all players within 8 yards of the Lurking Terror

Any player struck by Tormenting Detonation will also gain 25 Corruption

Excellent guide, and the Emerald Dream screenshots are fantastic.

Would like to add that killing Xavius is also required for The Stuff of Dreams, part of the A Growing Crisis storyline of Good Suramaritan, and thus ultimately required for Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part One.

Comment by Kuronx

Is it possible to use an invulnerability ability like Ice Block or a pally bubble to absorb corruption meteor or tainted discharge without taking and corruption? Or does it just block damage and not corruption?

Comment by majeedaf

What would happen though if a shadow priests uses Surrender to Madness as a Dream Simalcrum?
1- Will the priest die?
2- Will he be cast out of the Dream Simalcrum with all cds back? Since you leave the construct when you take fatal damage. That would be sweet. Imagine using two Surrender to Madnesses in one fight damn.

Comment by Elyseon

And stay dead! No "merely a setback" for you!

Comment by SaltLB

It's possible to cheese the normal version of this fight in Phase 3. Instead of dragging Xavius over towards clumps of Nightmare Tentacles, you can just bring him to the center of the room and, after lusting, just burn him down. This does of course require good DPS and good HPS.

Comment by Alhazred01

battle rez does NOT clear corruption. you'll rez with 100 corruption and go MC all over again. confirmed.

Comment by Abohassan

I hope this video will help you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkU0ckOvKsE

Comment by Hordearmy

Healers must not dispel until the debuff has 3 stacks and they should have dreaming buff.In addition, do not worry if u reach high corruption while dreaming.

Comment by Ulquiorra4thSwrd

In the emerald dream, there is also a "spirit" that looks like Ysera in "human" form walking near a cave, and a battle pet all around the zone :|

Comment by Demonikhunter

Bonds of Terror seems to be a Heroic addition. It didn't appear on our Normal kill.

Comment by CzechCloud

Dont be fooled. This boss isnt really that complex on normal or heroic.Basically you just need to know how much corruption you have and overall knew what to do.

And also, be sure to Hero/Bloodlust at the third phase, not at the start.

Comment by 172602

Please remove the battle ress hint after killing a corruption: decent into madness player - or at least note that this does not clear corruption.
The player will start with 100 corruption after the ress and will me MCed again after the 20 sec corruption: decent into madness phase.
It might be only worthwhile if these 20 extra seconds are the extra DPS needed to finish the boss.

Comment by cephadex

Thank you so much for all your work in putting together this detailed guide! Just a silly question, would you know if on LFR difficulty you would still get to see the Emerald Dream after defeating Xavius? ^^

Comment by fleaabag

What are recommended DPS requirements for normal/heroic? I have encountered multiple groups now that swear up and down that the second corruption should not spawn on the xavius encounter unless dps is just incredibly low, yet I have downed this encounter twice now by doing one of two things lusting at 30% of the second spawns health or pushing to the start of phase 2 and lusting. Neither time that have I used lust in 3rd. I would rather use lust on 3rd but because multiple people in the group want that add down they decide to lust. Any suggestions?

Comment by Breadgehog

Am I right in thinking that if you DO hit full stacks of corruption, you're best to dump as much DPS as you can into the boss and then bail into the shadows to prevent the MC effect? Either way the player is effectively dead, but that way seems to at least mitigate most of the impact.

Comment by Atraira

...ok seriously how can I view this without the guide. I just want to view the instance/bosses like all the old ones.

Comment by Roqua

After Legion, this fights going to take a few Xpacks before people will be able to solo it.

Comment by alec1012

Can you also use Cleanse as Retri Pally to dispel tanks from Darkening Souls? That could help damage dealers who receive Dream in phase 1 to reach the 100 corruption mark, as corruption gains during phase 1 are lower.

Comment by swifty2016

I hope dps know that they can go full dps while they in dream.

Comment by AmiYuy

This guide is missing a very important Mythic mechanic. You have to choose who gets Dream and it needs to be rotated. Details in the Fatboss video guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeBWBN2jJm8
