Rare Solves:
Starlight Beacon: Draw the outline of a Starlight Field. Players inside the Starlight Field can fly.

Crown Jewels of Suramar: Vendor trash item that sells for

Key of Kalyndras: Gain access to a secret side room within Black Rook Hold.

Key to Nar'thalas Academy: Visit a time-lost version of the Nar'thalas Academy. Use the keys again to return to the present.

Starlight Beacon

A Beacon of Hope

This handheld device was used by star-augurs to focus immense amounts of starlight into a small, concentrated area. The device was mainly used during festivals, star-worship rituals, or when the augur needed to reach something on a high shelf.

Crown Jewels of Suramar

Sifting Through the Rubble

The ruling princes and princesses in Suramar chose only to wear their crowns at the most formal events. They were kept locked up at all other times and were considered unstylish.

Key of Kalyndras

What Once Was Lost

Black Rook Hold was maintained and upkept by a small army of servants. One such servant was named Kalyndras, who was responsible for overseeing the Hold's armory and munitions storage. Like most of Ravencrest's servants, he fell to demons during the War of the Ancients.

Key to Nar'thalas Academy

The Keys to Success

This key does not open any door. Rather, it is a ceremonial gesture of invitation to the Academy, as a way of saying, "Our doors are open to you."

Nobleman's Letter Opener

0 Highborne Archaeology Fragment, 3 Ancient Suramar Scroll

As is always the case with letter openers, this is a completely useless tool, kept only as an excuse to have a murder weapon nearby in situations where it would be socially unwise to carry a dagger.

Pre-War Highborne Tapestry

0 Highborne Archaeology Fragment, 3 Ancient Suramar Scroll

Tapestries woven before the time of Queen Azshara's pact with the demons typically display a unique "under-over-over" style of needlework that has not been seen since.

Quietwine Vial

0 Highborne Archaeology Fragment, 1 Ancient Suramar Scroll

Quietwine was an ancient Highborne term that simply meant "poison." Ironically, after ten thousand years in the ground, the substance typically loses its lethality and becomes a mild intoxicant.

Inert Leystone Charm

5 Highborne Archaeology Fragment, 1 Ancient Suramar Scroll

Many Highborne superstitiously carried bits of leystone as a lucky charm. Such charms were typically worn by rural farmers, struggling academy students, or those sitting on the cusp between commonfolk and nobility.

Violetglass Vessel

5 Highborne Archaeology Fragment, 1 Ancient Suramar Scroll

The Highborne's penchant for all things purple predates the War of the Ancients. Glass bowls were fairly common and used to hold anything from grain to gold ingots.

Demonic Archaeology Fragment

Keystone: Mark of the Deceiver

Rare Solves:
Blood of Young Mannoroth: Part of A Keen Eye achievement.

Crystalline Eye of Undravius: Peer through the eye to see a world where the demons won the War of the Ancients.

Imp Generator: Trinket with Equip - Your damage and healing spells have a chance open a portal to Mardum, sending a stream of imps at your target or your target's opponent.

Purple Hills of Eredath: Part of A Keen Eye achievement.

Wyrmy Tunkins: Teaches the Treasure Demon pet Wyrmy Tunkins

Blood of Young Mannoroth

Dark Secrets

It is unclear why any being—demonic or Azerothian - would choose to put themselves on Mannoroth's bad side by keeping some of his blood in a jar.

Crystalline Eye of Undravius

Corrupted Studies

The eye of a powerful demon, preserved in the cold, stony ground of Stormheim. Writings from the time of the War of the Ancients state that Undravius was a fel lord commander with designs on removing all life from Azeroth.

Imp Generator

The Gates of Valor

Under the guidance of uncooperative mo'arg engineers, demon hunters were able to create several of these portals to Mardum. Unfortunately, they never quite caught on, as they usually let more demons out than in.

Purple Hills of Eredath

Darkheart Thicket: Through the Fog

In their haste, the Draenei brought few artifacts with them as they left Argus. This book is one of the few relics that has survived the trip to this day.

Wyrmy Tunkins

And Into the Fel Fire

In his home realm, he commanded an army of ten million demons. Now his power is yours to command. Go make him fight a chicken!

Houndstooth Hauberk

0 Demonic Archaeology Fragment, 3 Mark of the Deceiver

A massive piece of "mail" chest armor, crafted entirely out of demonic hounds' teeth. The points of the teeth face upward and inward, making the armor impossible to remove once worn - that is, impossible to remove without tearing the flesh of the wearer.

Orb of Inner Chaos

0 Demonic Archaeology Fragment, 3 Mark of the Deceiver

Chaos does not come easily to all demons - some struggle with the ways of the Burning Legion. Those who did would often carry an enchanted orb that invoked the rage required of any good demon. It is not known how the orbs were made or who made them.

Malformed Abyssal

5 Demonic Archaeology Fragment, 2 Mark of the Deceiver

The ritual to summon an abyssal is complicated, and often fails. When a failure occurs, a small piece of the demon typically remains behind, seething with a combination of latent demonic rage and despair at its own dysfunction. Ancient battlegrounds are littered with such stones.

Flayed-Skin Chronicle

5 Demonic Archaeology Fragment, 2 Mark of the Deceiver

Different breeds of demon exhibit different behaviors between battles. Succubi, for example, have a tendency to keep detailed logs of their day-to-day activities. Their accounts are often lurid, almost always grotesque, and were typically written onto "paper" made from the skin of an enemy or a captive.

Imp's Cup

0 Demonic Archaeology Fragment, 2 Mark of the Deceiver

Imps have to drink too, and many prefer to bring their own cup with them. Some theorize that an ancient imp-like race revered their drinking vessels as something sacred, and a part of that ritual remained even after they were indoctrinated into the Burning Legion.

Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment

Keystone: Highmountain Ritual-Stone

Rare Solves:
Spear of Rethu: Heirloom Polearm

Shard of Sciallax: BoA Relic

Spirit of Eche'ro: Spectral Moose Mount

Prizerock Neckband: Necklace with 3 prismatic sockets

Spear of Rethu

Neltharion's Lair: Misdirected

Revered by miners and blacksmiths, Rethu Ironhorn was one of the first tauren settlers in the Broken Isles. His descendants carry on his tradition of metalworking at Ironhorn Enclave, near the peak of Highmountain.

Shard of Sciallax

Uncovering the Orb of Sciallax

This immensely powerful Highborne spell focus was shattered in a reckless archaeological expedition. Its shards are all that remain.

Spirit of Eche'ro

Laying to Rest

Eche'ro was the pet, mount, and battle companion of Huln Highmountain, legendary hero of the War of the Ancients.

Prizerock Neckband

Drogbar Deception

The Drogbar have always been masters at jewelcrafting. In particular, tribal shamans would wear heavy, three-stoned necklaces. These necklaces were passed down from master to student.

Stonewood Bow

5 Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment, 3 Highmountain Ritual-Stone

The limbs of the bow are carved from a rock-hard tree wood, which makes it nearly impossible to draw. Archaeologists disagree as to whether the bow was originally so hard or whether the wood simply petrified with age. Either way, the size and heft of the bow suggest that it was only used by the most practiced of tauren hunters.

Drogbar Gem-Roller

5 Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment, 3 Highmountain Ritual-Stone

While most Drogbar appreciated the rough edges of a raw gemstone, others preferred a smoother, rounder jewel. Rather than using standard gemcutting tools, they used a hand-cranked stone device, which tumbled the gems over the course of several weeks. These were typically operated by servants, slaves, or disobedient youngsters.

Hand-Smoothed Pyrestone

0 Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment, 1 Highmountain Ritual-Stone

It was customary for a widow, child, or grandchild to keep a pyrestone from the funeral pyre of an especially loved one. These stones were carried in a pocket and rubbed for courage, comfort, or in remembrance of a lost companionship.

Moosebone Fish-Hook

0 Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment, 1 Highmountain Ritual-Stone

Moosebone was, at the time, the most common material for fishhooks: solid enough to carve a barb into, but pliable enough not to break off in the mouth of a large salmon. Many fishermen carved elaborate designs into their "lucky hooks".

Trailhead Drum

5 Highmountain Tauren Archaeology Fragment, 2 Highmountain Ritual-Stone

Not all Highmountain Tauren were hunters, but those that were typically commemorated their first kill with a ceremonial drum, stretched with the hide of their quarry. Most trailhead drums are made with rabbithide or foxhide. Hunters typically carried them for the rest of their lives.

Comment by lordloss390

It states that there are no rare legion solves from dig sites, and that they can only be completed through world quests, but what about the epic solves? And furthermore, does it function on a random basis, or can you choose the solve?

Comment by Bullfish90

Would be nice if a shovel icon could appear bigger above character's head. With camera zoomed out to the max, it's a bit of a trouble to notice it. Other than that, it's quite nice addition to this profession.

Comment by GJHY

Excellent guide. Very happy about the title and the mount this expansion.

Comment by jjanchan

Awesome guide! Answered some questions I had about some of the quality of life improvements they implemented.
I'm most looking forward to some of the lore - hopefully the quests will flesh that out some more.

Comment by 945239

Will we be able to use Restored Artifact buy Draenor Archeaology Fragments? Have over a hundred of the suckers; still diggin for last 9 Pristine Artifacts. Would be great if I could buy to help speed it up!

Comment by JOANOLS91

Hello, im 54 in archéology , we need to be 100 or more to have archéology quest from legion? thx a lot

Comment by Elyseon

Is anyone else unable to see any dig sites on the Broken Isles? Tried disabling addons but still nothing.

Comment by deathtrapper

Any reason why I can only see digsites in Stormheim? No other dig sites appear anywhere else. 800 Archaeology too.

Comment by 1393072

Can really only Horde get both epics? That would be a major d*ckmove.

...please tell me that isnt true.

Comment by iamnotreece

Definitely a twist on what Archaeology has been in previous expansions. I'm not sure I like how it forces you to do one area every two weeks. You can't efficiently grind it out, and it's more of a waiting game than anything else. Archaeology was definitely a fun profession due to the thrill of a rare find after 20+ Castles of Sand, but that aspect seems to be gone now.

Who knows how long it'll take me to get the wicked cool Spirit of Eche'ro, but good luck to everyone farming it and/or the toys!

Comment by Narillan

I've had two dig sites in PVP areas show up this week, one in Whisperwind and one in Storm's Reach in Stormheim. So expect some PVP in with your archaeology apparently. Lousy annoying change there.

Comment by Tritius

So there really isn't reason to farm, but just wait for the quest every two weeks to get the rare solves, huh?

Comment by Chewbrocoly

Crystalline Demonic Eye is another demonic rare solve, just got it.

Grants 300 Artifact Power (+25X% X being the number of Artifact knowledge you have).

Comment by 301593

I'm confused. First this guide shows a list of rare solves and then says there are no rare solves.

Comment by Truweil

Two weeks of digs in the same zone, feels bad man. Why? Having all digs in the same zone is great, but can they change daily, or maybe every 2-3 days, this is absurd and upsetting. Just a BS time gating mechanic for a side thing. Guess they don't want you unlocking those appearances too fast.

Comment by supermage

Blizz making rare solves from quests only kind of defeats the purpose of going out and grinding archaeology. Now all there is to do is wait around for weekly archaeology quests.

Comment by SweetTea123

Well crap. I didn't realize I had to complete the quest in two weeks so I never finished it. I looked up this guide to see why it disappeared from my quest log. I like how archaeology works in Legion I just wish I had known about the 2 week timer. Oh well. Now I know.

Comment by Dubilas

No, you can get right away. Just did it on my dh.

Comment by Hydracen

~~In case you don't feel like spending time on completing 25 projects for the Highborne archaeology quest by yourself, being in a party and solving an archaeology project grants everybody credit!~~

EDIT: No longer the case, this was hotfixed within a day of the quest being available.

Comment by Nymerias

If I don't complete the 25 Highborne projects in this two week window will my progress be saved the next time this quest comes up in the rotation?

Comment by Vonriel

I got the same "rare" quest reward twice in a row. It doesn't appear that having it prevents you from getting it again, at least not at the moment.

Comment by IronHorde01

So the quests are given at random every two weeks, along with a new digsite? and there is no prereqs for unlocking these world quests?

Comment by Luomo

From Tuesday, Seotember 27th until October 10th the location is Highmountain. Spear of Rethu is the reward.
This is by far the easiest ARCH project to date. After Dalaran head to H.Mountain and talk to ARCH NPC. You will be given a quest to have an npc present for 0/20 surveys (pretty sure it is surveys, if I am wrong people will tell me :) After that part of quest complete, it gets turned in and you will be given a straight-forward dungeon quest. Complete Netharion's Lair (difficulty not specified, so any?) & loot the ancient highborne artifact.

The next ARCH quest will be given out in Dalaran on Tuesday, October 11th after the weekly reset has completed and every 2 weeks after.

When the quest changes every 2 weeks the old ARCH quest is removed from your quest log. This is intended.

Have fun, good luck : )

Comment by rvnender

I'm not sure how I feel about the new achology profession.

I do like the fact that we have other stuff to do besides grind dig sites, but at the same time I like getting epics and Rares through dig sites.

Comment by JProgrammer

It appears that the rare solves follow the order from the achievement: This Side Up

Edit: Here's the order in the achievement (wrong in the mouse over)

Crystalline Eye of Undravius
Starlight Beacon
Spear of Rethu
Crown Jewels of Suramar
Imp Generator
Black Rook Key
Wyrmy Tunkins
Shard of Sciallax
Prizerock Neckband
Blood of Young Mannoroth
Key to Nar'thalas Academy
Purple Hills of Mac'Aree
Spirit of Eche'ro

Comment by Jingoistic

Ironic that of all professions, the one that involves digging up items from 10,000 years in the past, is the one with a short window for completion.

Comment by 1051919

So is there anything useful you could use the Restored Artifact for in Legion? Doesn't seems so, right? Is there even a loadstone to buy for legion? Cant find one...

Too bad the only thing that rewards archaeology in Legion is the quest that you get every second day... why can't you anymore be rewarded for actually spending time digging? Bah...

Comment by billymm

When I went back to see Bran in Pandaria, it seems you need your archaeology level to be 600+ in order to purchase crates of old archaelogy fragments with Restored Artifacts

Comment by serangel

If i missed a quest, will it rotate back at any point or is it gone forever?

Comment by Hayew

The comments listed under Purple Hills of Eredath stated that at Artifact Knowledge level 25, this awarded 250,000 AP instead of the 1,000 AP listed in the tooptip. That's a BIG difference! You also complete this quest by killing the Shade of Xavius in the Darkheart Thicket dungeon on any difficulty level.

Comment by Hayew

After you're maxed out at 800, is there any point in digging when you don't have the quests unless you're using theRestored Artifact as currency for old content solves or just going for the general profession grind achieves like Getting Your Hands Dirty?

Comment by Tyraellus

Can anyone help me out with this? I got the quest from Dalaran after that I got a quest to go to Val'Sharah and do the quests with Brann ending with the Darkheart Thicket dungeon and when I completed it I didn't get a new quest in Dalaran, like it didn't show up the archeology woman was in the archeology house but just no quest? Does anybody now anything more about this?

Comment by Catherine2358

Blood of Young Mannaroth was the end-quest reward from a chain in Suramar, involving Demonic digsites. Putting it into my Obliterum Forge gave me 3 Obliterum and around 50 Obliterum Ash.

Comment by maryalice

I really like all the improvement to Archaeology this expansion but I wish they would make improvement to how the keystones are stored. Such as, allow the keystones to stack to 200, or don't make them a bag item at all and add them to a tab on the Archaeology menu. I'm not even sure why they still have keystones, does anyone even pay attention to them? I don't.

Comment by kanegasi

Is there a list of all the quests in the order Dariness gave them since Legion started?

Comment by klaudiew

Since 7.2, on my character with a lower archaeology skill, occasionally there have been items turning up, at least in Suramar, when I survey called "Lost Highborne Journal". These are interactable, and spawn a Highborne spirit, who laments on the fact the sentinels have been destroyed, and her people have joined with the demons. She uncovers 2 free digs.

Comment by Seffie

can someone post a link on the prerecs for the heirloom spear quest. i just got the moose and i want the heirloom. please help.

Comment by miakayuuki78

There is an elite site in Stormheim at Storm's Reach.. it's a PVP area sometimes, but not always. There are beasts there (non-elite) you can fight, and when you defeat them they become mountable. If you do this, you get a 50% speed buff while mounted and you CAN do all your archeology stuff while mounted. Makes this little area very quick and fun, especially if you get there when the PVP isn't going on.

Comment by Railguy

Is there any reason why a comprehensive guide to Archaeology in Legion wouldn't include the basic information of which fragment type goes with which zone? I came back here to try to remember whether Valsharah or Azsuna contained Demonic fragments, and that information isn't there, or even the fact that specific zones give specific types of fragments in general.

Comment by 1505869

conducted a survey to see if it was possible to obtain a pristine artifact, whilst having the quest for another in q-log/back-pack

ran the highmountain and demonic bi-weeklys.

solved the following without poppin either stone bow, or the imp cup i needed.

1 malformed abyssal
1 houndstooth hauberk
2 orb of inner chaos
2 flayed skin chronicles
4 imps cup (missing pristine)
11 moosebone fish hook (pristine i had in inventory)
9 trailhead drums
10 drogbar gemrollers
13 stonewood bows (missing pristine)
5 hand smoothed pyrestones (missing pristine)

total 58

asked a friendly GM, his reply wasn't i direct answer to the mechanics, but his reply was clear:

if you get a pristine - hand it in

reply was

"bla bla formalities

it is best to turn in the quest, because it will give you a better chance for a new one to pop up"

as side note he even topped it with a joke: how do you get dwarfs on your roof? you tell em drinks are on the house XD

happy hunting lads and lasses

Comment by Ashley

Just want to point out that Shard of Sciallax is Highborne, not Highmountain.

Comment by Filverel

I have done quite a bit of digging, but for some reason my bag is full. I have reached my limit of 200 pieces and don't know how to get rid of them. Can somebody let me know how to do this?
Felverel Archaeology

Comment by HammiChan

just wanted to throw it out there, if bad guys come out of quest objectives (see quest weeklies for Legion Archeology), they scale to you.

Comment by BeornwulfSaxon

Does anyone know if you can stock up on pristines and hand them all in at once? I'm working on Eche'ro and don't want to have to head back to Dalaran in between dig sites if I can avoid it

Comment by TheCutter

Very nice guide except for one issue. Why not post the starter quest which leads to the item rather than the final quest? For example, you list Neltharion's Lair: Misdirected for the Spear of Rethu rather than History of Highmountain which is the starter quest for that chain. Doing so would enable players to better choose what they want to do or not rather than having to come here and scroll through page after page. Just my 2 cents. (And yes I know I'm very late to the party).

1 - 750
Surveying dig sites at Broken Isle is the fastest way to level Archaeology to 750 because you can survey each dig site 9 times, and the dig sites are confined to one zone, so you will get to each dig site much faster. (The zone where you can find dig sites changes every two weeks)

Alternatives:

You can level until 700 in Draenor. You will also get 9 skill points from dig sites in Draenor, but you will have to travel more between dig sites.
You can level until 600 in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. But, you will only get 6 skill points from each dig site, and you will have to travel a lot more between dig sites, so these continents are much slower.
You can also level to 600 in Outland (from 300), Northrend (from 375), and Pandaria (from 525) once you have high enough Archaeology skill.
750 - 950
You could do the 750-800 part at the Broken Isle, but from around 750, looting the fragments at dig sites will give skill points much less frequently, so I recommend switching to Zandalar or Kul Tiras.

And for the last 150 points, you can only gain skill points by surveying in Zandalar or Kul Tiras dig sites, and solving artifacts won't give any skill points anymore.

As you get closer to 950, you will get skill points much less frequently. The last 30-40 points will be really slow, you will sometimes have to clear multiple dig sites just to gain a single skill point.
