Quests to Unlock a Level 1 and Level 2 Garrison

Patch 9.0 Level ChangesReaching Draenor

Pick up the quest Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal, either from Chromie for Chromie Time, or from the Call Board/Command Board. This will instruct you to visit the Vanguard Battlemage in Stormwind or Orgrimmar. In Stormwind, this NPC is found in the Mage Tower just below the portal room (49, 87), and in Orgrimmar, she is in the main Orgrimmar portal room (57.6, 88.6).

Talk to the Vanguard Battlemage to get a free ride to Blasted Lands.

Once you are in Blasted Lands, abandon the quest Warlords of Draenor: The Dark Portal. If it's in your quest log, this will not work.

Now run to the Dark Portal, but instead of stopping to talk to Khadgar, run through the masses of Iron Horde and straight into the portal.

You will appear in Frostfire Ridge (Horde) or Shadowmoon Valley (Alliance), right before you start opening your garrison. Mission accomplished!

but it is only usable for players level 30 and above.

From Stormwind or Orgrimmar, take the portal to The Jade Forest in Pandaria. This will be located near the turtle mount vendors.

Next, talk to the flightmaster in Pandaria to get a flight to the Timeless Isle (most eastern point on the map).

Ride to the are with the frogs on eastern Timeless Isle, then swim until you reach an underwater cave at 67.9 76.9. Go inside the cave, sit on the chair, and click on the Grim Campfire (limited to characters level 30 and above only).

You will now be teleported to a Grim Campfire on an island by 74 24.5 in Gorgrond.

Mount up (a waterwalking mount goes faster) and ride west until you come to the western pier of unphased Iron Docks.

Speak to the NPC, who will offer a dialogue option to fly you back to the Garrison. This will drop you off in the unphased area, and you can then start on the Level 1 quests.

Level 1 GarrisonAlliance

After completing the starting zone, Tanaan Jungle, you will land on the beach in Shadowmoon Valley. Here, you hand in Step Three: Prophet! and then follow Prophet Velen up a path (Finding a Foothold ). Hand that quest into Vindicator Maraad and complete For the Alliance! by turning around and clicking the banner. Hand this quest in to Baros Alexston nearby.

Pick up the two quests Baros Alexston offers: Looking for Lumber and Ravenous Ravens . Complete these by going into the woods along the path and clicking the banners and killing Lunarfall Raven. Hand those back into Baros Alexston. Pick up Quakefist from Yrel and complete that by entering the tree indicated and killing Quakefist. Hand that into Yrel and pick up Establish Your Garrison from Baros Alexston. Speak to him to build your garrison. Enter your garrison and hand that in.

Pick up Keeping it Together and Ship Salvage. Complete those in your Garrison and down on the beach, as well as Pale Moonlight from Vindicator Maraad. Hand those in (you now have a handy Garrison Hearthstone to get back to do so!)

Pick up Build Your Barracks from Baros Alexston. Collect the nearby blueprints and right click on them to learn them. The next portion of the quest will pop up and instruct you to use the architect table near Baros Alexston. Click the architect table to bring up the Garrison Plots UI. Drag the Barracks item on the left to the indicated available plot. Close the UI. The quest now tells you to finalize your plot - follow Alexston to the Barracks and click the large deed in front to finalize it. Hand that quest into Vindicator Maraad. Handing this quest in also grants you your Shadowmoon Valley garrison ability, Call to Arms.

Now that you've initiated building your Garrison, Vindicator Maraad will then offer you your first quest to acquire a Garrison follower: Qiana Moonshadow . Pick this up and complete it by leaving your Garrison and finding Qiana Moonshadow in Moonflower Valley, outside your garrison. Speak with her there and then return to your Garrison and hand in the quest. Qiana is in your town hall and handing this in rewards her as a follower.

Lieutenant Thorn, standing next to her, will then offer you Delegating on Draenor which teaches you how to send a follower out on a mission. Click the table in front of her to bring up the Garrison Mission UI. Drag Qiana from the left to the available follower slot and and click to start the mission. Starting the mission completes the quest, which you should hand in to Lieutenant Thorn.

Horde:

After completing the starting zone, Tanaan Jungle, you will land on the beach in Frostfire Ridge. Here, you hand in The Home of the Frostwolves and then follow Farseer Drek'Thar up a path as well as picking up A Song of Frost and Fire. Hand that quest into Durotan and complete For the Horde! by turning around and clicking the banner. Hand this quest in to Gazlowe nearby.

Pick up the two quests Gazlowe offers: Back to Work and A Gronnling Problem. Complete these by going into the woods around the quest givers and clicking the banners and killing Frostfire Gronnling. Hand those back into Gazlowe. Pick up The Den of Skog from Gazlowe and complete that by entering the rocky area indicated and killing Skog. Hand that into Gazlowe back at Frostwall and pick up Establish Your Garrison. Use the Surveyor just up the hill to build your garrison. Enter your garrison and hand that in.

Pick up What We Need and What We Got. Complete those in and around your Garrison and down on the shores near the crash site, as well as The Ogron Live? from Rokhan. Hand those in (you now have a handy Garrison Hearthstone to get back to do so!)

Pick up Build Your Barracks from Gazlowe. Collect the nearby blueprints and right click on them to learn them. The next portion of the quest will pop up and instruct you to use the architect table near Gazlowe. Click the architect table to bring up the Garrison Plots UI. Drag the Barracks item on the left to the indicated available plot. Close the UI. The quest now tells you to finalize your plot - follow Gazlowe to the Barracks and click the large deed in front to finalize it. Hand that quest into Gazlowe. Handing this quest in also grants you your Frostfire Ridge garrison ability, Call to Arms.

Now that you've initiated building your Garrison, Gazlowe will then offer you your first quest to acquire a Garrison follower: Winds of Change. Pick this up and complete it by leaving your Garrison and finding Olin Umberhide in a cave in a ravine outside your garrison. Speak with him there and then return to your Garrison and hand in the quest to Warmaster Zog. Olin is in your town hall and handing this in rewards him as a follower.

Warmaster Zog, standing next to him, will then offer you Mission Probable which teaches you how to send a follower out on a mission. Click the table in front of him to bring up the Garrison Mission UI. Drag Olin from the left to the available follower slot and and click to start the mission. Starting the mission completes the quest, which you should hand in to Warmaster Zog.

Level 2 GarrisonAlliance

A Hero's Welcome: Travel to Embaari Village and speak to Samaara.

You will then be sent on three quests just north of Embaari Village. Closing the Door to kill Shadowmoon Portalmasters to close 3 Void Portals, Dark Enemies to kill 8 Shadowmoon Voidmancer, and Think of the Children! to save three children hiding in buildings.

Shadows Awaken: Confront Ner’zhul in the Embaari Village observatory and kill Karnoth. If you have professions, he will drop items that start quests for Draenor profession scrolls and Level 1 blueprints.

Travel southwest and speak to Prophet Velen at Twilight Glade for Into Twilight. He is located at the top of the mountain, which can be reached via a narrow path on the south side of the river.

The Clarity Elixir: Make an elixir for Velen—this requires 6 Swamplighter Dust from Frenzied Swamplighter, 3 Engorged Heart from Echidnian Hydra, and 1 Pristine Star Lily from Pristine Star Lily by the river.

The Fate of Karabor: Drink the Clarity Elixir and then complete the solo scenario to witness the fate of Karabor. This automatically queues/zones you into the scenario.

Going Undercover: Obtain an orc illusion from Sylene and then plant explosives in four key locations in Shaz’gul. You can also click on Void Touched Pumpkin for a buff. There are many Void Wolves who can detect your disguise and attack you. However, there are pieces of meat lying around that you can throw at them to distract them. If you do end up fighting them and your disguise drops, you can reapply the disguise with Sylene's Amulet of Illusion.

Escape From Shaz'gul: Inspire Yrel and then escape with her. When you inspire Yrel, you have the choice of several dialogue options—all of them end up inspiring her. During the escape, you will fight many waves of orcs. At the very end, you will fight Terrorfang.

You’ll then be sent back to your Garrison in Fast Expansion, which leads to Bigger is Better. Turn in Garrison Resources and you will upgrade your Garrison to Tier 2—meaning you automatically unlock all Level 1 Small, Medium, and Large blueprints as well as a questline for the Mine.

Horde

You are sent to Wor’gol which is being attacked by the Thunderlord clan. Save 6 Villagers or wolves in Free Our Brothers and Sisters and kill the named mobs and 15 Thunderlord in Save Wolf Home.

Enter the Pool of Visions underneath Wor’gol at 18, 56 and defeat Warleader Gargrak for The Farseer.

Pool of Visions: Talk to Farseer Drek'Thar at the Pool of Visions and watch the ritual.

Fly to Bladespire Citadel in Back to Bladespire Citadel to notify Durotan.

Meet Durotan’s brother Ga’nar in Ga'nar's Vengeance. He is located north in Daggermaw Ravine at 30.9, 25.8.

Let the Hunt Begin!: Talk to Ga’nar to start the quest, and then wait for him and his followers to go down into the ravine. At the bottom of the ravine, get in combat when the orcs engaged with the Thunderlords. When the real battle begins, fight off the adds with Ga’nar and his followers and after a few waves, you will get the reinforcements part of the quest finished.

Leave Nothing Behind!: Kill Kur'ak the Binder and destroy Thunderlord Ballista and Thunderlord Supplies.

They Rely on Numbers: Slay 15 Thunderlord at Daggermaw Ravine in Frostfire Ridge.

Wrath of Gronn: Release 3 Captive Gronn which are located both above ground and in the tunnels below (entrance at 46,35). You need to kill the Thunderlord Beastwrangler that have chains on the gronns to get credit.

The Eldest: Slay Hatock the Gronnmaster in the cave below.

You’ll then be sent back to your Garrison in To the Garrison, which leads to Bigger is Better. Turn in Garrison Resources and you will upgrade your Garrison to Tier 2—meaning you automatically unlock all Level 1 Small, Medium, and Large blueprints as well as a questline for the Mine.

Garrison Levels

You can upgrade your Garrison to Level 2 on completion of the questlines culminating Bigger is Better/Bigger is Better. Visit Quick Facts on those quest pages for a list of related quests. Upgrade costs 0 Garrison Resources. This automatically teaches you all of the Level 1 blueprints--small, medium, and large.

Leveling your Garrison to level 3 requires you to be level 40 and costs and 0 Garrison Resources. At level 3, you have access to more plots as well as any Level 3 Blueprints you've previously earned from achievements.

Blueprints

Level 1 blueprints all become available to you when your Garrison reaches Tier 2. The Salvage Yard is an exception, that is a short questline at 30.

Level 1 blueprints for the Mine, Fishing Shack, Herb Garden, and Menagerie are learned at quests available at specific levels. The quests to open the Mine becomes available at level 15, the Fishing Shack at level 20, the Herb Garden at level 30, and the Menagerie at level 35.

Level 2 blueprints become available at different times depending on their size:
Small buildings: Reach level 30 or complete the Talador Outpost quests at level 20.

Medium buildings: Reach level 35 or complete the Spires of Arak Outpost quests at level 30.

Large buildings: Reach level 40 or complete the Nagrand Outpost quests at level 35.

Is this setup all skippable? I think Garrisons are dumb and have no interest in investing any time into what is essentially a solo-player Sims clone. Do you have to do this quest to get any follow-ups to continue leveling?

Garrison level 2 doesn't require level 92 (once the guide is updated this comment is irrelevant, currently the guide says garrison 2 requires L92).

I got it as level 91 after completing the chain with Enfilade and returning to my garrison.

On the horde level 2 part, with "leave nothing behind" you also need to do "they rely on numbers" as well to continue.

Great guide! One thing could use correction/clarification: in the Alliance Level 2 section for Into Twilight, it says Velen is located at the top of the mountain. In reality he is located at Twilight Glade (which is not on top of the mountain) to hand you the next quest and until you gather the materials; he moves up to the mountain when you're ready to hand in The Clarity Elixir.

I really wish Blizzard had stuck with their initial design idea they advised at Blizzcon of not having a gold sink paywall for the tiers of the Garrison. 5,000 gold for the level 3 is such a bad design idea. On my alts I would muh rather drop that 5,000 on gear etc than to take the Garry to level 3.
I still much prefer tinkering with my Tillers garden, if only that blank spot in the garrison would turn into a tillers garden...

A very spicy detail you might want to add: Building level 2 buildings in the level 2 Garrison needs either level 96 on your character or an outpost in Talador.

FYI TO ALL
When leveling your Garrison from 1-2 or 2-3 make sure to pick up all the nodes (mines herbs) that have spawned first. Before you level the Garrison. Because they seem to re-spawn, I do not know if this is a bug or intended. Considering it is a one time deal each level i think it is intended.

Upgrading to a lvl 2 garrison now requires either completing Bigger is Better or being lvl 93.

The level requirement to upgrade to level 2 Garrison has been increased to 93, unless you do the questline. In that case you can get it as early as 91 (possibly 90 if the xp isn't too large from the required quests)

as at 6.1.2, (horde side) You can also upgrade to garrison level 2 via Securing the South series - end at Return to the Pack which will trigger the Bigger is Better quest at your garrison.

FYI for Alliance Demon Hunters trying to obtain a garrison with the least possible fuss, it is important to know that the initial QUEST for the chain you need to get to Pandaria is The King's Command which you can get from a Hero's Call Board in Stormwind.

(Once I reached Pawdon Village, I handed in two quests and then took Flight Path to Timeless Isle.)

For Horde Demon Hunters trying to obtain a garrison with the least possible fuss, it is important to know that the initial QUEST for the chain you need to get to Pandaria is The Art of War which you can get from a Warchief's Command Board in Orgrimmar.

After doing that there is no quest at the garrison spot, but i can see 2 quests in the map, anyone knows what the prob is?

One of this week's hotfixes enables new DHs to click on their city's portal to Ashran after completing their intro quests. This drops you off right at the start area for your faction's garrison.

There are some steps missing. For any Alliance Demon Hunters following the the Reaching Draenor portion, follow the steps below:

Obtain the The King's Command quest from the Call Board in Stormwind
Complete the first quest in that chain
From Stormwind, take the portal to Paw'don Village in Pandaria. This will be located near the turtle mount vendors.
Speak to the flight master next to where you teleported and fly to Timeless Isle (most eastern point on the map)
Ride to the area with the frogs on eastern Timeless Isle (near Firewalker ruins), then swim until you reach an underwater cave at 67.9 76.9.
Go inside the cave, sit on the chair, and click on the Grim Campfire.
You will now be teleported to a Grim Campfire on an island by 74 24.5 in Gorgrond.
Mount up and fly west until you come to the western pier of unphased Iron Docks.
Speak to the NPC, who will offer a dialogue option to fly you back to the Garrison. This will drop you off in the unphased area
Run or fly to Eventide Bay to the northwest at 26.96 8.10.
Accept the quest Finding a Foothold from the NPC there.

Taking the portal to Ashran from inside Grommash Hold will take you to the starting quest for your garrison on Frostfire Ridge. If you haven't unlocked the Pandaria portal (which seems bugged for us DH right now), this is the fastest way.

I am stuck trying to level up my garrison. My town hall is a level 3. I have other level 1 and 2 buildings. I have completed all quests and score 100% on pathfinder except some in Tanaan jungle. I have 2600 garrison resources. I bought a level 1 blueprint for salvage yard that is not recognized. Any ideas?

The guide above says:

The only thing you need to do as a Demon Hunter is amass the 200 Garrison Resources needed to level it up.

Well, as a level 100 demon hunter I opened up the level 1 Garrison and acquired 200 Garrison resources. I don't see how to do this shortcut. Baros Alexston does not have anymore quests for me. The Architect Table does not allow me to interact with it. Am I missing something?

Aftr i lveld garrison to lvl 3 i lost all blueprints for small and medium buildings. Can't put professional buildings on empty plots cause " no blueprints". Is it some bug or do i need to finish some questlines...DH lvl 100?

Nice guide, i will use for a new 100 leveled with token.
Seems Demon Hunters have its garrison where reforge Artifacts, on Dalaran3, (Dalaran1 hillsbrad-foothills, Alterac Mountains, Dalaran2, Northrend,) jumping to floating isle (wish we have a heartstone 4times jump is fun, 40 is not)

The flight master at Iron Docks for the Horde is not on a dock at all, but on a little outcropping in the NE corner of the Iron Docks area. A Tauren named Dron Skyborn.

I am not sure if this got nerfed or what but this did not work for me. I have tried before accepting The Dark Portal quest and after accepting it but before doing any of the follow ups and after doing some and the result is always the same, I get to the future location of garrison and there is no way to start any building. Its just an open area with a few table looking things and some NPCs but nothing for me to do. I think it got hot fixed for some reason. I am doing this a a fresh boosted 110. Should have just started new class trial and then boosted it but I wanted to boost existing toon, silly me

My demon hunter didn't have a portal to Pandaria in SW. I hopped a mage portal to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and picked up the quest Journey to the Timeless Isle and then used my Curious Bronze Timepiece to get me to the Timeless Isle.

I had a character that completely skipped over Draenor, and out of curiosity wanted to get a Garrison to level up some alliance reputations. I found another quick way to Shadowmoon Valley.

Use Ever-Shifting-Mirror toy on Shadowmoon Valley (Outland) Legion Hold 'Crossroad' 27.1 33.36

Fly north to the landing zone and Velen was there to give me the appropriate quest.

For anyone with a boosted 110 Character I had a bit of a hard time figuring out exactly what to do, so these are the steps I followed for my Horde character. Hope it helps!
Take the portal in Orgrimmar to The Jade Forest in Pandaria
fly to the Timeless Isles to the south East
Ride to the area with the frogs on eastern Timeless Isle, then swim until down you reach an underwater cave at 67.9 76.9. Go inside the cave, sit on the chair, and click on the Grim Campfire.
You will now be teleported to a Grim Campfire on an island by 74 24.5 in Gorgrond
Follow the coastline all the way north and arount the northern entrance to the Iron Docks. You will have to approach from the water along the northern shore
Got to 55.9 6.7 - horde flightmaster, on the eastern dock not the West. Alliance flight master is on the West dock.
select "take me back to the garrison"
this will bring you to frostwall, frostfire ridge 45.62, 50.57
Head west down to the beach where the shipwreck is, 40.80, 67.09
Speak to Farseer Drek'Thar
accept the quest "A song of frost and fire"
this will bring you back up the pathway to the NPC Durotan to complete the quest
accept "Of Wolves and warriors" quest from Durotan
This will bring you back to where you originally landed. frostwall, frostfire ridge 45.62, 50.57
complete the quest and accept "For the horde"
This will allow you to plant the banner and claim your garrison
keep following the quests given by Gazlowe next to where the banner is planted until your garrison has been built and you receive your garrison hearthstone

I found many of these comments to be confusing since many don't specify what zone, NPC, and faction they're discussing when they list coords. So here is the EXTREMELY simple version, no pandas required.

How to Skip the Draenor Intro And Just Get Your Garrison (ALLIANCE):

1. Get a mage to port you to Ashran.
2. Walk/fly yourself (no flight path) to where your garrison SHIPYARD will eventually be (Shadowmoon Valley, 27,8 ish).
3. Prophet Velen will have a quest for you: Finding a Foothold. This quest is ON YOUR MAP by blizz as a plot quest for easy finding.
4. Proceed w the questline and you're good to go. :)

I don't have a DH so idk about the whole Ashran portal in SW thing, but mages are everywhere. Go into WM if your server is empty and go to Goldshire and ask. WM Goldshire is usually full of helpful people.

Port to Ashran from Stormwind, then fly to Shadowmoon Valley. You can't get the starting quest from Khadgar, you have to go down by the water just to the NW of the garrison plot to get the quest from VELEN. Make sure you have trivial quests checked on your minimap locator. You then need to take the quest from Yrel.

I don't understand why these guides don't get updated, they're so outdated.

If you have boosted chars and you are stuck, you need to complete the 2 quests from Gazlowe and the quest The Ogron Live? from Rokhan, then Gazlowe will have the quest for the barracks, after that you get the quest to get the first follower from Warmaster Zog, send that follower on a mission (also quest from Warmaster Zog), then you get the quest Bigger is better and you can build the Garrison level 2 once you have 200 resources

Remember to view trivial quests.
Pick up Finding a Foothold
keep following the quests in your garrison, completing them and returning. Pick up and complete the first follower quest and the first table mission.
Yrel will then offer the quest to start route to Garrison 2. See page https://www.wowhead.com/guide/garrisons/quests-to-unlock-a-level-1-and-level-2-garrison - follow these quests and after about two hours (1 hour waiting for it to be built) you will have your enchanters study.

Doing the quick portal route with some timerunner alts, don't forget to put "Blasted Land" in the right time to see Khadgar, if he is not present you'll end up in outland ...

I just added the Garrison to my 68, "Bigger is Better" came available without leaving the garrison, after turn in to LT Thorn.

BUT...

You will need more questing if you have not purchased Huge Ore Cashe from the AH, or otherwise received one, or ground out 200 Garrison Resources.

Careful Spending Big Gold on Huge Orge Cache's, they do NOT count towards the quest to upgrade Garrison...

For what it's worth -- it's now Feb 2026, the beginning of Midnight. To start my Garrison, I've tried this abandon quest and run through the portal strategy three times and still end up in old Outland -- tried on my (2026-level) 45 alt both with and without Chromie time and won't work. Sooo, I guess this strategy no longer works. :(
