During the first 80%, just spread out and DPS him. He'll throw out mushroom spores that start small and quickly grow. Get away from the mushrooms as they have a poison aura and aoe.

At about 20% he'll self-root and put out an aoe that heals him. Stay away and dps him down.

Very easy fight, he is the first boss encounter in Coilfang: Underbog - it's just him, not him and the two adds as it may look like when you first approach him. When the fight starts stand where there aren't any plants blocking your sight of the ground, as to see and avoid the the mushroom spawns mentioned in the post above. Tank must move everytime AE occurs, and at the end of the fight with the self entangle roots, as above poster said.

It is also possible to destroy the mushrooms and prevent the large aoe dot effect. However, I recommend only a ranged class destroys the mushrooms, as it still creates a small area poison cloud after being destroyed for a short amount of time.

First boss in Underbog: This is one of the tougher bosses in this instance.

1) Mushrooms- GET AWAY (or have a ranged dps class get rid of them, but still stay back at all costs). We had two people die from the mushrooms alone, they grow fast and are sometimes hard to notice. They spawn quite often too.

2) Poison Aura/AoE - If you're tank is geared enough, don't worry about him running out of the aura he can probalby take the damage. Any other melee class (especially rogues) will want to step out and back away until it goes away.

3) Roots - When he gets to low health (20-30%) he'll root himself, and anyone within his aura range will heal him, for a lot of health. In fact, if 2-3 people stay there for 5 seconds he can heal 15% of his health back. Simply just back up until it wears off, then re-dps

The mushrooms are the roadblock in this fight. We actually 3 manned this guy because two of us died at the beginning from the 'shrooms. He doesn't hit that hard and doesn't have much health.

Abilities
Mushrooms: These mushrooms take a few seconds to grow. When fully grown they will do a nasty AE dot. Just avoid them. It is also adviced to announce them into Ventrilo/Teamspeak (if used) because they can be hard to see if they spawn directly behind the boss.
Root/AE: At around 20% and periodicly afterwards, he will root himself and start and AE. Any damage done by the AE will heal him for 4x damage.

Tactics: Tank and Spank fight. Just watch for the mushrooms and at 20% have melee DPS back off just in case someone doesn't notice. I would also heavily recomend not using melee pets at all during this fight (imps should be fine).

Only difference on heroic is the mushrooms spawn a lot faster, need to keep tank and group moving on the fight.

For those of you facing how to do the two guards in Heroic, I thought I would post this. We found it very rough because they cannot be tanked, CC'd, snared or split.

We had a hunter kite the second one to the instance. He had to shoot it, jump off and run straight for the instance with Aspect of Cheetah up - even still the giant tagged him before he feigned at the front.

In order to compensate for healer agro I had him lay a fire trap a little down the ramp, wait 20 seconds, Aimed Shot - Viper Sting - Arcane Shot - Send the pet - Jump and run. He then dropped another fire trap while running. This held the agro to him during the MT heals.

IN HEROIC MODE:

Hungarfen is not has hard as the two Bog Lord in fornt of him, they key is to avoid the mushrooms he spawns. Your group needs to clear the entire bottom level. Then have the MT or a Hunter kite him all the way down the ramp so your group avoids being hit by the mushrooms. The rest is just like regular non-heroic mode.

The two pull before the boss can easily be conquered with a half-competent tank and a decent healer. Just put amp magic (if you can) on the tank, and have him put 2-3 sunders on the second mob and thunderclap/demo shout etc, while you dps the first. Much easier than trying to do all that kiting

Use V (or whatever key you have to see healtbars) to see the mushrooms. This helps a lot when avoiding them.

For heroic, we kited him down to the bottom of the ramp, and fought him there as there is a lot more room to moneuvre.

I always play with healthbars, sees alot more things then. We killed him on the platform he stands on in heroic, just makes sure the tank moves him around to safer spots, and it's no problem. The mushrooms ainr dangerous when they are small, so just know what mushrooms you can stand at.

For those having problems seeing the mushrooms, seriously, level 70 and you havn't learnt to put enemy hp bars up?

The first 2 bog giants before him CAN be tanked if you have a decent tank and healer, if not then 1 can be kited away while you kill the first.

On heroic you don't need to clear the first floor, just tank-kite him around his platform. The shrooms spawn faster, but aren't dangerous till they're full grown. Easier kill than the two giants guarding him. As long as your tank can walk backwards and spam attacks while avoiding the purple decoration mushrooms (can't walk through them) and the rest of the party can avoid standing on a shroom you'll be fine. For those of you that don't know the benefit of showing enemy health bars (press V) this fight should wake you up to their importance.

this guy was as hard as hell cause we got wiped 3 times on this guy. but all we need is a good tank with either a pally or warrior or with both cause we had 2 pallys and 1 of them started healing. our paladin tank almost got killd and our pally healer got killd by a spore. so we started spreading out and wen the spores can we moved from them. and we managed to take him down with only 1 perosn dieing.

On Heroic, we just ran him in counter-clockwise circles. If the party stays on the move it's over in no time.

On the two bog lords before him, our shadow priest popped into heal gear and offhealed while I tanked both of them.
Also, when he tries to heal himself, you can keep nuking or even increase your nuking as long as you have ranged DPS.

Pretty easy to solo as a feral druid. Just stealth past the bog giants, put on some tank/dps gear, get in to bear form, and move him around in a circle near the bridge while avoiding his mushrooms and getting aggro of the bog giants. When he roars in pain, just move out and heal up to full health. =) (Didn't have to use frenzied regeneration either.)

The following worked great for my group today:

To take out the bog lords, have the tank pull the right lord and a Warlock send his pet in on the left. Have the Warlock cast a Shadowbolt (or Searing Pain) immediately after sending his pet in, and as soon as the pet dies, jump off the ramp and head to the instance entrance. The bog lord should chase after him down the ramp. This should give the group enough time to dispose of the other bog lord. When the Warlock dies or gets out of range, the 2nd bog lord will come back to meet his demise.

Contrary to many posts I've read on Hungarfen, there's really no need to run him in circles, or down the ramp, or anywhere off his platform. We fought him as a tank n' spank, taking care to avoid the mushrooms. However, listen to the other posters when they say to use 'V' for the alternate health bars. This works miracles for avoiding the otherwise hard-to-see mushrooms.

I (druid) tanked him last night on heroic mode. My group got through the two guards, but not before the healer carked it and had to soulstone mid-fight. I've got no idea how the rest of the group survived that - but after the healer died, the guards only had agro on me.

As for kiting Hungarfen, I had enough threat that I inadvertently kited him in a spiral pattern. In all, got him and his guards first go.

This was only in normal mode, but we had the two ranged DPS in the group move together to avoid the mushrooms, but stay close to each other. We went clockwise, the healer went the other way. I didn't see a single shroom pop up on the tank. We might have been lucky, or it might target groupings of toons. Who knows. Needs testing.

His Foul Spores can be dispelled with a hunter's Arcane Shot. I did it once last night; I'll test it again to see if it was a fluke or an error in the combat log, and edit this post if I notice anything different.

he can be solod by a lvl 70 feral druid quite easily, he hits weak at that lvl and dodging the mushrooms alone is no problem at all, at 20% take a healing break and your done

Soloable as a 70 elemental or resto shaman looking for the totem. Drop your earth elemental, earth shield it if resto, and just alternate heals on it with lightning bolts. The further back you stand the fewer mushrooms will spawn near you. At 20% dismiss your earth elemental and finish nuking him down as he channels his foul spores (they will heal him if your elemental is near him even though the elemental is immune to the nature damage it causes).

Also, the 2 giant pull before him is skippable at 70 if you carefully move around the right side of the right giant.

Some people seem to be confused. When Hungarfen roots himself when his health gets low, he gets healed by players attacking him, not by players standing close to him.

He heals very quickly. If your DPS is not paying attention when he roots himself, it has the potential to restore him to full health.

Luckily, he does not root himself a second time.

When Hungarfen roots himself, the root effect (Foul Spores) is actually removeable by warriors Shield Slam ability. So when he is getting close to 20% make sure you save your Shield Slam and use it as soon as he starts to root.

Soloed on heroic as a feral druid, 34% dodge 33k HP 60% mitigation from armor. Had to use frenzy regen toward the end of the fight and popped barkskin and dodge trinkets. Heal to full when he roots himself and sprays spores. Very easy.
Also the 2 giants before him do not pull with him.

Soloed as BM Hunter level 64 (also cleared all mobs before) in quest gear, although I initially went in just to grab a few Sanguine Hibiscus.

Died on first attempt due to not paying enough attention to Mend Pet or an unlucky crit streak. Pet was Beetle, specced for mitigation and increased healing. Glyph of Mending is a must but the pet survival in the end depends on the Shell Shield and Cower.
An important thing is to have your pet on passive so you can recall it away from the boss when it hits 20%. I didn't bother trying to move the pet away from mushrooms, too much micromanagement.

Cataclysm sure has made things simple, not that I know how hunters were before that.

edit: went in again a level later and had a ton more trouble for some reason, even dying on trashmob pulls. Probably lucky on first try.
The pull just before Hungarfen with two giants was especially troublesome as pet can't tank both very long and they're far enough apart that the aoe skill doesn't hit both right away. Yet you need to start mend pet asap.. In the end I told pet to 'move to' middle of the two giants to ensure it had initial aggro on both.

Just before Hungerfan is about to cast Foul Spores it says "Hungarfen roars in pain"...It makes me feel kinda bad actually.

avoid shrooms like you already do and just dps him down, with the release of 3 expansions after tbc its unbelievable that people still complain about how broken and imba bis this boss is
