Best daily quest ever! Must be honored with Sons of Hodir and have completed Raising Hodir's Spear

Take the Spear and find a wild wyrm flying around west of Dun Niffelem and throw the spear.

You will find yourself flying around on a wild wyrm gripping onto its belly and you gain a new action bar as if you were in a vehicle, there are 4 abilities for phase 1 (theres a total of 2 phases).

Grab On - Tighten your grip increasing the number on the grip buff by 10.

Dodge Claws - Moves you closer to the wyrm allowing you to dodge its only attack for the next 2 seconds. 4 second cooldown (does NOT have a global cooldown)

Thrust Spear - Jab Hodir's Spear at the wyrm dealing 1000 to 1300 damage. Decreases grip by 5

Mighty Spear Thrust - Thrust Hodir's Spear deep into the wyrm dealing 9k to 11k damage but you cannot take any action for the next 5 seconds while you pull the spear out (this includes dodging). 10 second cooldown Decreases grip by 15

So basically you cannot let your grip fail and it decays over time, slowly at first but will eventually become too much to handle. (I think its about 1-3 min don't know exactly before it becomes too much to handle). If the buff fades you will fall to your death.

Constantly be using Thrust Spear on the wyrm while keeping your grip above 35-40. When a warning pops up alerting you to its claw attack use the Dodge Claw ability and after it use Mighty Spear Thrust. The objective is to get the wyrm to 25% of its health to force it into phase 2. If you think your grip is decaying too fast use Mighty Spear Thrust and hope for the best. At 25% you go into phase 2.

In phase 2 you are in its mouth (O.O) you have 2 abilities.

Pry Jaws Open - Prys the wyrm's jaws open by 5 degrees increasing your chance to hit with fatal strike by 5% per application. (stacks 20 times)

Fatal Strike - Throws Hodir's Spear into the wyrm's throat instantly killing it has a 0% hit chance on its own you NEED to use Pry Jaws Open.

So now youre flying around in its mouth. You gain a debuff called Jaws of Death which hit me (premade hunter with all that blue premade gear) for about 632 a second. The damage is physical so it might be affected by armor not sure though.

All you need to do for this phase is pray you didn't get hit by too many claws in phase 1 and use Pry Jaws Open as much as you can before attempting fatal strike (10+ stacks is nice but I live on the edge and go to 20 with almost no health left its intense!) If you are close to death and not at 20 pray your fatal strike hits.

Once he dies you fall to the ground (still in its mouth very cool) hit the ground and jump out.

Congrats you just killed a giant wyrm with only a spear. ^.^

After about a minute in to the fight I get the error "Invalid Target" while I'm targeting the dragon. She then proceeds to drop me on top of Nifflem every time. What's wrong?

Well for me atm on live realms its either bugged or I'm doing something horribly wrong. Pressing the skills by mouse or hotkey (1 to 4) actually do nothing at all. Nothing works, no reaction no nothing and after a while I just lose my grip and die..

Do yourself a favor and stock up on Snowfall Lager for learning this quest. Drink it right as he drops you and you won't die. Very fun quest I might add!

You cannot throw the spear while mounted. It'll dismount you and you'll fall to your death. I learned the hard way.

I also found it was easiest to just forget about dodging his claws. Just spam Mighty Spear Thrust as much as possible and the regular spear inbetween, only pausing to keep your grip up.

This may only apply to Warlocks as we have Fel Armor though (as it ticks for 400-500 health per 5 on a decently geared Warlock). I end up having 100% or close to that health when he switches phases.

Then it's just cake as you have plenty of health to get him to 20 stacks of jaw prying.

Brute force it. Forget about dodging, the way it's set up trying to skill it hurts you. Use the cooldown skill whenever it's up, make sure your grip is good, do little swipes in between if you can afford it.

Basically, there's very little penalty for being hit by the claw swipes, and the main limiter on the quest is how you lose grip progressively faster as the fight goes on.

For this to *Actually* require skill, they would need to change 3 things:

#1: The claw swipe needs to have a penalty for being hit by it, lose like 50 grip or something.

#2: The claw swipe needs to have a longer cooldown (right now the worm can swipe about 2 seconds after the last one, meaning you can have the dodge skill on cooldown and NO WAY to dodge it). In fact, it should have a longer cooldown than what Mighty Spear Thrust forces on the dodge skill.

#3: The progressively faster grip loss either needs to be done away with, or slowed considerably (right now it's too fast to even try doing it skillfully).

Bugged bugged bugged and sick of dying. Sometimes it works fine, then the next time nothing works, even spamming the grip action does nothing and I fall to my death. Bugs with and without add-ons.

I give Blizz credit for being creative and trying to make fun quests rather than just kill x of y, but many of these 'vehicle' type quests suck as they bug out way too often, especially if you play at peak hours when latency spikes.

TL;DR:

Phase 1 (Method 1)
(This method gets you into P2 with maximal HP.)

Press 1 and 3. (Keep your grip buff above 35.)
When a warning pops up alerting you to its claw attack, press 2 then press 4. (If you can.)
Repeat.

Phase 1 (Method 2)
(This method gets you into P2 as quickly as possible.)

Press 4 when it is not on CD.

Stack stam for this quest; your health matters since you take dmg, esp in phase 2. Your spell power is irrelevant, so you can even wear "of stamina" gear if you carry such things.

I started this quest by alternating 1, 3, 1, 3 (grip, thrust, grip thrust.... sounds kind of like... nevermind). But this is wasting too much time gripping. So as recommended above, spam 3 and grip only when it's falling below 35-ish.

If you reach phase 2 with > 50% health, you should easily get to stack 10 debuffs or more before killing him.

I thought this quest was so-so, but I'm grateful for one thing: it's one of the few Hodir quests where you don't have to fight to tag mobs and no one can steal your kill.

Edit: Today, Nov 25th, this quest gave 500 Hodir rep; the most of any daily at Honored.

If this quest bugs for you: You hit the keys but nothing happens here are some steps to fix the problem.

If you are a Hunter/Warlock Dismiss your pet first as this can bug the quest
Make sure you dismount before throwing the harpoon at the dragon
If your quest bugs it will continue to bug until you have reloged

Because you are not actually put in combat when you engage the wyrm, you can unequip your gear to prevent taking a durability loss if you are about to die from the fall.

NOTE: You do NOT take off your gear while you fight the wyrm. Do it after you lose your grip. Mods or macros that allow you to swap gear quickly is recommended.

The connection to nordic mythos is disturbing for those that know it. Hodir is most probably a reference to Höður hinn blindi (Hod the blind). Loki tricked Hod into thrusting a spear with a mistletoe tip at Baldur (Baldr the beautiful). Baldr's mother, Frigg, the consort of Óðinn the highgod of Valhalla had asked every plant in nature to spare Baldr except the mistletoe, thinking the plant was too weak to hurt anything. This resulted in the gods taking great pleasure in tossing things at Baldr, amused that nothing hurt him. Well, Hod could not see what it was he tossed so Baldr dies, Loki gets chased around the world for causing his death and incarceration in Hel, eventually caught and trapped at the roots of the earth in an exceptionally lurid BDSM position (chained to the roots of the earth with a snake hanging over his eyes dripping venom, Loki's wife standing at his headrest with a bowl to catch the snake's venom, once in a while the bowl fills and she has to empty it out, venom drips in Loki's eyes and he shakes the roots of the earth causing earthquakes) starting the plot for how to get even with the gods of Valhalla. Eventually Loki leads the Naglfar (ship of nails, as in, human nails) from Hel in Rangarök (literally: end of Gods).

In short: kill beauty and start the sequence that ends the world.

If you do end up falling, you CAN use your damage reduction from fall abilities and actually survive.

Slow Fall, Bubble, Parachute Cloak, etc.

As someone mentioned earlier there is also the brew that you can purchase in Frosthold for 10 Relics that will give you slow fall as well.

P51 minus's comment was the one that finally helped me get this done.

To sum up:

Spam dodge (it costs you nothing and helps keep you alive)
Use the heroic spear thrust every cooldown (this is the source of damage)
Use your grip ability in between to make sure you don't fall off
And if you can spare it, go ahead and use the normal spear thrust

Phase 2 is all about having enough hps and some luck to get off the killing blow.

I managed to pull it off with only 9k hp and all my gear off (282 armor) following that logic. Good luck!

Best advice is to just ignore the dodge button. I put on my old 70pvp gear and focused on using number 4 when it was up and then rotate using number 1 and 3 until the phase ended and then finish him off in phase number 2. Took me a few times, and it is worth it to buy a couple snowfall lagers.

I am not sure if this is a bug, or not. But, I died in phase 2 at the same time as killing the Wyrm, yet I took no durability loss. Has this happened to anyone else?

If you do not take durability loss for dying in phase 2, then it doesn't seem nearly as bad.

If you put yourself as focus you will be able to see your own health all the time, making phase 2 much easier since you will get an idea how long time you can spend on opening the wyrms jaw. :)

This quest needs "skill' to complete? I'm laughing my you know what off at that comment.

Some days the quest works fine and other times it just bugs out. And people think being able to spam a couple of buttons that only work if the server isn't lagged or some other random occurrence doesn't bug it out is skill? What a joke.

If you're having problems with this quest try the suggestions above and see if you can find something that works for you. Do note this quest can be buggy and is more difficult for some classes (those that have less armor / hps), so don't feel too bad if it doesn't go well at times.

Also try to have something for slow fall in case all goes wrong (abilities, drinks from Uldar relics, parachute, whatever).

I'd like to add that the damage is a fixed percent of your total with no dodge, block, parry, resist etc.

There is no reason not to do the quest naked.

Interesting tip for Demonlogy warlocks that have Demonic Sacrifice. If you are going for brute force, just sacrifice a voidwalker and with Fel Armor up, you take little damage regardless of the phase!

Never once saw a grip buff, little to no information on what you're supposed to do and skills were all on a GCD. Are we all playing the same game? A daily were you die if you fail is weak and while the idea is great, it is poorly implemented.

The one where you fly the eagle, the plane with different stations, the dragon one, all have proper icons and work well. This one is far from that level of polish and does not have the safe fall those do when you fall off.

If the wyrm kills you, you won't lose durability, but if your grip fails and you fall to your death, you will.

Don't use your spear to catch Wyrm if you're mounted. I used to "hurl the spear" while I was mounted (on the ground) but I got no credit after I killed the wyrm (happened several times). Just dismount when you're in range, hurl the spear to catch wyrm and kill it (see other comments for this).

Yes, this advice is correct. However, if you want to win 100% of the time and not land with close to no health you do have to dodge sometimes. Here's my strategy:

1.) Use mighty spear every time it's off cooldown.
2.) Use grip / normal spear the rest of the time keeping my grip around 30-40.
3.) Dodge when I can.

You won't be able to dodge all of them and as mentioned above you really need to use the might spear whenever possible, but if you ignore dodge completely then sometimes you're going to end up without a 20 stack in phase 2. With the above strategy I always complete the quest and I'm usually still at ~50% health.

Sometimes the abilities given when you "mount" the drake, did not work for me. Dropping and re-targeting the drake fixed this.

Ok , here is the break down...
I am trying to hit exalted with son of odir thus i really need this quest done almost everyday because it gives me 500 rep...
Well, many many problems with this quest
1st of all, i need to turn all my UI mods off in order to avoid the glich in the system..
2nd of all , if u die , yr body will be soo far away from the area where u start this quest again
3rd i can tell u that if u stack him 10 times u will have less then 50 % chance to accomplish the quest.

My solution for all is to 1 shot this quest . have done it almost everyday for last 8 days..
Here is the trick
1-Disregard button # 2
2-Use button # 4 whenever its cool down is up(meaning this is the 1st thing u gotto use as soon as u get on the dragon)
3-While on a Cooldown use button # 3
4- dont be blow 35

Btw guys make sure u health is topped beofre starting this quest... if bossible get stam buff or self buffs.. i am a hunter so i use dragon aspect for dodge...

I think this quest might be bugged right now. The attacks I do are having no affect, I can spam tighten grip but my grip still keeps diminishing and I always fall off like 30s after starting, the attacks do nothing either, mob stays at 100%

On my server Wild Whrym are rare, and fly at ~~280% speed, hard to catch. I just gave up this quest since it takes me 15-20 mn to harpoon one.

classes/chars with a lot of base health who are just learning this take your equipment off. you can easily finish it without equipment on and wont take fall damage on it if you fail. i do the same thing with the quest in coldarra (every once in a while you accidentally grab two and die there).

best thing i found was hit 4 then 1 til at 90 then switch off between 1 and 3 hitting 4 whenever its off CD for phase one. for phase two just hit 1 10 times then 3 to slay him

After 3 days of watching the Jaws tick, it seems that it's not mitigated by armor:

Day 1: 6666 armor = 436/tick
Day 2: 7627 armor = 433/tick
Day 3: 11958 armor = 454/tick

I didn't log my total HP for the first 2 days, but a quick check for today shows that at 15135 hp:

454 / 15135 = 0.029 or ~3%

Working that backwards puts me at about 14,400 hp for day 2, which was about right. I haven't looked at the stats for the claw swipe, but i would be inclined to say that it's also % based so that the quest is 'fair' for all armor types and HP ranges. I've got the technique down now where I rarely die. I alternate grip with regular stab, then dodge as needed, followed immediately by a big stab. Floating beer is on tap just in case.

This did take me a couple of tries to get the hang of,. but when u get it its preatty easy .. :p first time i did it i were left with only 485 hp left, så maybe more luck than skills? :D you be the judge of that.. :p

anyways,.. if you follow #1 steps at the top it'll be pretty easy, and i also do reccomend stacking up on Snowfall Lager.

This is one of the most poorly designed quests I have ever seen. The cooldown on the dodge is too long to dodge all of his attacks, you don't have long enough to dodge the attacks 90% of the time, and even with 20 stacks of pry jaws up i missed several times. Blizzard should change the quest to make it doable without dying several times over.

What is an awesome quest is ruined purely cos it is bugged to hell. If you don't complete it first attempt of the day be prepared to spend the next half an hour tearing your hair out cos the wyrm turns friendly all the time once you mount and you can't use the abilities. When it works it is pretty easy just follow these tips...

remove all gear that will need repair, gear makes no difference to this quest other than repair cost, damage taken is a % of your base health and ability damage is constant. It will save you a lot of money if you struggle with it.

phase 1. use (1) to improve grip until its around 70, be prepared to (2) dodge when ever he swipes at you, once you dodge use (4) cos (4) resets the cooldown on (2). keep using (1) unless your grip is above 70 then use (3) instead. (Only use (3) if you grip is about 70

phase 2, spam (1) until you have 10 stacks on it, then hit (3) and pray it doesn't miss, i have often had it miss 3 times in a row. stupid quest it is. The better you were are dodging in phase 1 the more health and therefor time you have in p2.

If you get on the wyrm and it turns friendly and no abilities work, just spend the 30 seconds till your grip fails removing your armour if you had it on to save repair costs. If it does bug best is to log off for 10 mins, get a drink and come back and try again, an instant log off/on again doesn't seem to work.

If you ticket it don't expect anymore help than the usual, its your computer, remove all settings files and mods. I have tried all their suggestions to the letter, its the quest not mods and such. So until they fix it either avoid it or be prepared to spend a lot of time on it.

Can anybody confirm that the damage the drake deals is static, rather than based on overall health?

I find it highly unfair that clothies would be at a loss compared to the other, stamina-based classes (or even those without decent stamina gear), so it makes me wonder if the damage isn't just a % of health, rather than a static amount (e.g. If you have 12k health you get clawed for 500, if you have 24k you get hit for 1200, etc).

I finished this about the fourth time I did it, but I only died once. I'm a priest, and Levitate stops me from dying - and next patch I'll be able to cast it on others - could I manage to be under someone and lev them as they fall to their death, so that they live (lol)?

I've done this one multiple times, and never failed it. Frankly, it's a relatively easy quest for good rep (500 pts) if you know what you're doing and use the abilities correctly.

Phase 1

Use Grab On (1) and Thrust Spear (3), alternating them. This will do continuous damage and keep your grip up.
As soon as the warning pops up, use Dodge Claws (2) then Mighty Spear Thrust (4).
Using 2 then 4 in that order is important. Mighty Spear Thrust blows the cooldown for Dodge Claws, which mean if you're spamming Mighty Spear Thrust, you can't use Dodge Claws when you need to most of the time. 2 does NOT blow the CD for 4, however, so using them in this order gives you a dodge, and a massive strike at the wyrm. This ensures good damage while saving your health for Phase 2.
Go back to the 1 and 3 combo.
Make sure you keep an eye on your grip! If it goes below 30, spam 1 a couple times in a row to bring it back up.
Keeping this rhythm going almost guarantees 100% health going into phase 2.

Phase 2

Spam the hell out of Pry Jaws Open.
When you hit 20 stacks of Pry, hit it with Fatal Strike.
20 stacks of Pry is a guaranteed kill once you use Fatal Strike. Use this to your advantage.

Phase 3

?
Profit!

In all seriousness, I taught most of my guild to do it this way, and out of 30+ people doing the Hodir dailies regularly, only 1 guildy has failed doing this quest since then, and only because he lagged in phase 2.

By going into Phase 2 with 100% health, I can usually build 20 stacks of Pry and still come out at ~50% health, which is a huge buffer to work with.

4 times today I have started quest and not had the action buttons work. The global cooldown would activate when the button was clicked, however the action would not trigger. Hard to do quest when you cannot increase grip or do damage.

The wild wyrm spawnrate is AWFUL. If you're on a server that has any population at all, I recommend doing it at off-hours or you'll be standing around forever just for a try at this quest.

This appears to SCALE WITH HEALTH.

i.e. if you're low on health (or not full of health) or a tank or a clothie, you'll have around the same probability of doing it.

This quest is awesome, but it bugs easily.

If you start using your abilities quickly when the fight starts, they suddenly stop working. I ended up dying 3 times because of this. Everytime I started the encounter, I would be gribbed to the beast without being able to use any of the abilities. Couldn't dodge, couldn't hit, couldn't tighten the grib, nothing.

So when the fight starts, don't start to spam grib immidiently, and if it does bug for you, relog. Seems to be the only way to fix it for now.

EDIT: Yet another bug. If you die by the fall sometimes while in the ghost form you can't turn any direction anymore, forcing you to relog to fix it. You simply face the direction you were facing when you died, like locked in place.

Love the quest.

Worst daily quest in the history of Wow. Far too difficult to be a daily. Daily quests should be a fun,fast,and easy way to get gold and rep. This terrible quest is none of the above. I'll be skipping this until it gets nerfed . It should either be reduced in difficulty, changed to being a one time only quest, or removed from the game entirely.

Finally completed it this morning, with no visible health bar left. At least I got the Ultimate Triage achievement by bandaging myself afterward.. (Died about 30 times so far).

Spammed grip and Dodge until Mighty Thrust was up, to have enough grip and health to survive P2, then clicked Pry Jaws while watching my health bar, and Fatal Strike when I was nearly dead. didn't see how many jaw stacks I had.

If I don't dodge, I die in phase 1. If I use both attacks in P1, I run out of grip and die from the fall, taking equipment damage.

not sure if it was bartender or which addon was it, that made this quest immposible. the skill thatd increase your grip by 10 wouldnt do anything. its wierd because ive done every other quest that works in a similar way (getting to use a diff mob with new skills) and ive never had this trouble before.

Fits in well with the rest of the horrible daily quests in Northrend. Tried so many times, and I've been dropped several times when grip was still above 0 and did not fade.

Most of the fun is lost by the edge that the quest creates.

My first few attempts at this quest failed, even after reading the above posts but this eventually what I did:
Do a mighty thrust as soon as I mounted, and after that every time this CD was up I used the dodge move just before another mighty spear thrust (since dodge has no GCD).
The rest of the time I simply spammed the #3 button twice (occasionally 3 times) followed by the #1 button once.

For phase two I simply stacked about 8-10 buffs before alternating between the 2 moves until I was successful.

I registered and signed it just to comment on this.

This daily to me is on the level of Space Invaders: its a button masher, while keeping a buff up by mashing another button. Then phase 2 is mash another button to get a buff up before hitting another button once.

When trying to do this quest I would get "invalid target". There is one wild worm that flys in a small circle by Hibernal Cavern, ou can not target this one for the quest.

So if you keep getting the "invalid target" like I was make sure you have one targed that gives you the sword cursor.

This quest is crazy difficult to do when experiencing bad lag.

Hit the dodge every time it pops, and three times the reasserting your grip then the big thrust, or alternate regripping and the smaller attack. In my opinion, the dodging his claws ability is key, so if it is about to refresh, delay making an attack in order to be able to hit that as soon as it's available.

In the second phase, try to stack prying his jaws open at least 5 times before you thrust the first time. Generally speaking, you are only going to get 2 chances to do it, so try to guess how many times you can stack it for attempting it the first time in order to have time left for a last-ditch thrust after priming it a couple-three times, then a last one unaided if you are lucky enough to still make it. That third, unprimed one is the one I finally managed to freakishly succeed on landing after failing this quest one time because of not understanding about managing grip, second because of not stacking prying jaws apart so getting killed from the massive DPS, and third & fourth from doing everything right and just plain being unlucky. :)

This quest is bugging, after using the spear. I can see the new bar pop up but can't use any of the 4 abilites. End up dying 4 times till i decided to drop that quest.

If you like the kill stuff, grab stuff, get gold, win type of quest, then by all means. There are several available, some of which let you kill things that drop the Relics of Ulduar (heard rumors of Sons rep for a 10 stack hand in, which would be awesome). No one is forcing this quest down your throat.

As for the button mashing comment... that's your opinion. This quest is an exciting change. It's entirely different. It makes you give a different strategy a try. Yes, there is some skill involved in it. If you don't use the right combinations, you're going to be toast.

In general, I've liked all the "vehicle" quests except shooting down proto-drakes for EB rep. That one is just boring. But in general, I find vehicle quests enjoyable. Don't like it? Don't do it. But please don't tell people that it isn't fun. You are just irritated because you died alot. Some people enjoy this kind of difference. Obviously you don't, but you don't have to ruin it for others either.

As mentioned before, sometimes there is a bug on this quest. On the day that I failed it I noticed I could not grip, attack, etc on my second attempt. Every attempt after that was the same... the next day I tried it and it was fine.

Tested the theory of if you fail that it bugs out again today and it does. Don't know if that's everytime but try not to fail! Bring potions if you tend to take a lot of damage! Keep those Snowfall Lager's close at hand too...

Phase 1

Spam 1 and 3. (Keep your grip buff above 35.)
When a warning pops up alerting you to its claw attack, press 2 then 4. (Then resume spamming 1 and 3.)

Phase 2
Spam 1 until the buff is stacked 10 times.
Press 3.

Phase 1, hit 4 every time it is cd or you won't get to phase 2 in time.

I just completed this for the 1st time. Im a rogue with just under 17k health.

I tried this fight naked but died just into phase 2, so no go.

I tried to brute force with all my gear equiped, but I took too much damage in phase 1, and died by 10 stacks on the jaws in phase 2.

Using the heavy thrust and dodge whenever they are off CD, whilst alternating grip and jab did it for me.

I think i was on about 17 stacks on the jaws when I killed him, and had about 3k health left.

For those who haven't found out yet..
Druids can use their flight form ability if they lose grip. This can help preventing any deaths :)
Also like some above have mentioned, snowfall lager can also come in very handy for this quest.

so I'd died already about 5 times doing this quest, and everytime I went into dun niffelem it got bugged and even if my grip was strong I still fell off, so I decided I was just going to ignore the dodge ability and just spam Mighty Spear Thrust and Grip, keep in mind that I'm a warlock with about 1.9k armor and 14.5k hp and I never was low on health, the lowest I went was to about 80%. I advice you just use Mighty Spear Thrust whenever its up, and when its not just spam Grip, you really don't need to Dodge. Got this quest finished in 2 mins after 5 times of prying jaws open and doing two Fatal strikes.

Not sure how the post by "Loneranger84" reached a rating of almost +70, while the one by "sqrly" got downrated.

To spam buttons 1+3 in Phase1 is plain wrong (remember, spamming is never good).
Sure, it may get you through that phase, but it aint as it should be done.

Button 4 is the one which opens up Phase2, although it will put a CD on your dodge ability (button 2), it is still better to use it asap to get into P2 fast and maybe beeing unable to dodge 1 or 2 attacks therefore.

Result is that you barely have to watch your grip (button 1) that much and get P1 done very quick.

Aswell in Phase2 you better do NOT wait for 10 stacks by using button 1, as it is very common that the button 3 (Fatal Strike) ability fails, aswell 7 stacks usually is more than enough to get it done (depends a bit on the fact with how much health the wyrm entered P2. - at around 25% 6-7 stacks will kill him by using button 3).

I have had runs when Fatal Strike missed 6 times in row (with close to 20 stacks up to the end), which is no longer surviveable as a non "tank" class (ferals excluded), so waiting for 10 stacks will decrease your chance by 1-2 Fatal Strike attempts (remember, you can stack further "Pry Jaws Open" while waiting for your "Fatal Strike" ability to come available again).

Spam is never a choice.

EDIT: As I see that "Loneranger84" tuned/adjusted his post by now, removed that "spam this and that", added the proper tactic ...
I can now live with it - my critics were a concern to his "unedited" post, as this was not reflecting the idea of this fight.
But now I am ok with it :-)

Might sound kinda obvious but im still saying it: Use the dodge AFTER he does the emote, instead of spamming the dodge each time it's off CD.
And also for warriors, be on Defensive Stance when you're fighting him, i don't know whether it affects his swipe dmg but it sure affects the damage when he flips you over into his mouth.

Spam 1 and 3 and 4 when its ready. Dodge is simple enough. Not sure how I killed it in phase 2. I just hit the buttons a lot and I killed it.

this is a very easy and fun quest actually, all i do on the 1st phase is to spam 1,3 and 4

and hit "2" aka dodge only when there is a message warning that state he's trying to grab you

if you hit it on time, you can 90% dodge it all the time leaving your Health almost full on phase 2

and during phase 2, i dont really know what to do other tham spam 2 and 4 respectively

because on phase 2, you will almost inflict a dmg around 500-800 every like 2 sec, so yeah, try not to lose too much Health on phase 1

phase 1 determines the whole quest IMO

as the dragon went to phase 2 and threw me into its mouth, i clicked my button 1, which was to open dragons jaws wider, but instead it cast a rejuv on me... so im now stuck in caster form in the middle of the air, unable to move in any druid form and auto-unstuck doesnt work.

As a priest i usually apply Renew and Power Word :Shield just as i throw the spear at the wyrm but before it picks me up and i can ignore the couple first claws since they are healed and/or absorbed.Also as soon as it picks me up i use 4 then 3 a couple times and spam 1 to have my grip at least 60-70 at all times.Also when you dodge its claws you can use 4 immediately after that,i have found that most of the time 2 is on cooldown by the time he tries to claw you again.

This quest is really , really , really easy, just press the dodge when he's goin to hit ya, do a mighty thrust after, and small ones when he's not hittin, and rince and repeat, but be sure to keep your grip up, as i do above i usally get him to the 2nd phase with 100% hp, just put up 20 stacks and kill him, or 15 or 18 or what u now like :> good luck

...yes you can. Keep grip up, spam Spear Thrust, Dodge when warned, and use Mighty Thrust when you dodge (every second dodge, to be precise). You want to do this because Mighty Thrust puts dodge on cooldown. By using them at the same time, it removes that weakness. Doing this, it's simple enough to enter Phase 2 with 100% health.

Step 1: If you are not a tank or another class with rediculously high health, buy a full set of green "of Stamina" gear to do this quest in.

Step 2: During phase 1, use button 4 whenever it is available. The longer phase one takes, the more likely you are to lose your grip. While button 4 is on CD, keep your grip above 35 at all costs and use button 3 whenever you can. IF you can dodge a claw attack, great. Don't worry too much about dodging claws. The point of phase 1 is to get to phase 2 without losing your grip or dying as quickly as possible.

Step 3: During phase 2, hit button 1 once then hit button 3. Continue to spam button 1 while button 3 is on CD. Hit button 3 whenever it is up. As long as there is at least 1 stack of the pry jaws buff, there is a "chance" that the killing blow will work. 5% chance to hit per stack.

Step 4: Kill the dang thing and dance on its corpse. Then go turn in your hard earned quest for 500 rep and 16 gold.

All in all, this quest can be very hard. Especially for those classes with lower health. Buying the "of Stamina" gear is not absolutely necessary, it is a tip. More health means you can take a few claw hits and get into phase 2 faster. The whole point of this quest is to finish it, not die trying. It doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you complete the quest reliably. This is not an easy "kill quest" like most of the others. This one requires a strategy. Do what works for you. This is simply my suggestion and it works for me. The entire goal is to be able to do this quest every day without having to try more than once.

I can confirm: deactivate all addons to avoid bugs and succeed.

Also I unfortunately can confirm that it is bugged. If you fail quit wow completely and restart it. otherwise the buttons will do nothing.

I agree totally the coolest daily I have seen yet so much fun. I spammed thrust spear as much as possible and grip and did not worry about dodging the claws and this is as a clothie so it works for light armor wearers like myself. GREAT quest.

Your "grip meter" is the small box beneath the wyrm's portrait.

BAsically, if you are headed back to the Hodir area (the big ice structure with the anvil), and haven't gotten the wyrm down on health, prepare for the big fall. You will find that your grip RAPIDLY decreases as you get closer. I found the slow fall lager to be a good thing to have!

To reiterate, this daily quest gives 500 rep, and is available at honored reputation with Sons of Hodir.

This quest is EASY. It seems hard at first, heck I died a few times because I didnt turn off my addons while doing it, so my attacks and gripping was not working at all, so I would suggest the same.

1) Take off all your gear just in case, the dmg is based on a % so your hp pool does not matter, then shoot a passing wyrm with your spear, and get taken by its clutches.

2) PHASE 1; YOU DO NOT have to dodge any attacks at all. Just spam #1 (grip) #3 (regular attack) and #4 (special attack) constantly.

I would spam #1 x 4 times then do #3 then #4, then back to #1 x 4 times, etc.

Eventually the wyrm will put you in its mouth, this is when phase 2 begins.

3) PHASE2; You are in the wyrms mouth and are going to be prying it open with the #1 skill button. You will be taking around 373dmg per tick here, so just spam #1 up to 10 times ish, then hit #3, if you fail , do it again, eventually the wyrm will die and fall to the ground.

Given that Relics of Ulduar will be non-souldbound and give SoH rep when 3.08 comes out, this quest seems hardly worth all the risk and annoyance. There are no other dailies that I know of where if you push the wrong key combo, or WoW bugs out on you, you receive an instant death. Given that you can't do every daily available to you every day, this one is very skippable for other dailies.

Hey, something to consider is doing the quest naked. It takes a percentage of your health when clawed of in the jaws, not a specific number, so doing it naked will save you on repair costs.

Dodge Every Attack in Phase 1!

Its possible to dodge every attack in phase one with your dodge because your dodge is actually off the global cool down (GCD) when you're on the dragon.

Phase 1
-----------
1) Spam 1 + 3 (make sure your grip is always 50+)
Wait for.. "Wild Wyrm swipes at you with his claws!"
2) Hit 3!
Then you'll get a message... "DODGED!"
3) Hit 4 for more damage (make sure your grip is high enough for this, it takes 15grip)
*Repeat*

Looking over what has been written above & my expriences I conclude:

> Use whatever abilities you may have to increase the amount of dmg you take (mana shield, Pw:S etc)

> This is far harder for clothies with low armor &/or HP, or anyone generally low on HP

Keep trying to find a strategy that suits you/your character as i believe there is quite a bit of luck in this (as to whether the drake tries to strike at you repeatedly or there is long pauses between strikes)

How to do this quest:

Don't. It sucks. Seriously, there are tons of dailies in WoW, dailies that does not have a big chance of you falling to your death, getting your gear !@#$ed and needing reparing (not always cheap as a plate wearer, I'll tell you that). Do those in stead.

It's really unfortunate that if you happen to kill the Wyrm when you're over the cliff to the South East of Niffelheim, when you exit its jaws you will slide down the mountain to your death.

And yes, THAT death will cost you durability.

What works for me:

- Chuck a few HoT's on yourself before you throw the spear
- Hit 4 when it's up, every time.
- Alternate between Grip and the Stab, keeping your grip above 35.
- Ignore the Dodge completely
- In phase 2, just get to 7 then attack. Then spam 1 until the attack is up again. 20 is the guarantee, but you can win it before then.

Worst quest ever made. Here's why...

Unless you are perfect (or lucky) and get it on the first try, it's not worth the 250 rep or the measly 13g you get. Pretty much if you fail the quest too many times (took me 5 the first time) you get stuck with a hefty repair bill from dying 50 times. Cost me 26g first time.

There is a point in the quest where your grip just plummets. If you spam Grip (1) and keep it up at 99, you'll be fine during the first... I'd say 1/3 of this quest. But then when he loops, around the time he flies over Dun Niffelem, he just lets go of you.

Today, the quest is actually bugged. Will not let me use Dodge Claws or the stronger stab with the spear. =P

So unless you REALLY want that 250 rep, skip this quest. It's not worth the 13g, 30g repair bill, and aggravation. Oh yeah, travel time back from retrieving your corpse on the side of the mountain bordering Zul'Drak sucks too.

This quest is easiest to do without the mouse, four fingers on your keyboard buttons 1 to 4.

When you hit your strongest attack (4), it also triggers the cooldown on your Dodge move (2) but the other way around does not, so it's best to wait to get the message that the wyrm is trying to claw at you - then use your dodge followed immediately by 4. While waiting for the wyrm to claw, spam 3 to attack, unless your grip debuff is at 50 or less, in which case you should spam 1 until you're back to 90 or up. If you hit 2 the instant you see the wyrm claw warning, you will dodge easily.

During phase 2, be extremely careful of your location when you hit the final blow button! If you are above the frozen lake where the Brittle Revenants roam, they will most likely attack you before you get a chance to heal the damage done by the wyrm, and possibly one-shot you with their slam attack before you can heal yourself. Also, if you fall on the tip of one of the large ice tips of the village, there is a high probability that you will reappear on a spot too steep to stand up and fall down to your doom. The wyrm corpse does not need a level surface to eject you and may do so even on an incline of 45 degrees or higher. My best advice is to look down where you would land BEFORE hitting 3, so if you're flying above the lake, continue spamming 3 until you're clear of the lake and flying above the center of Dun Nifflehem. That way, you'll land clear in the middle of the safe zone.

This quest is a joke.. NONE of the actions in the action bar even work. 1-4 do nothing. I have been lucky to get one spear thrust off, the grip does absolutely nothing for my grip. Both spear thrusts do no damage, so he is 99% hp or so when he drops me off the side of a mountain. What is the trick to this quest? delete it? The 2nd option "dodge claws" does nothing, doesn't even highlight. its worthless.

Unlike some other vehicle quests, in this quest you are concerned with your *OWN* health, and not that of the vehicle. So be at full health when you pull. I'm a priest so I also cast Power Word: Shield, Renew, and Prayer of Mending on myself while the spear is pulling the dragon towards me. A question I have related to this--I have two 80s I do this quest on, one a draenaei, one a tauren. They are both same class, very similar gear, similar HP, other stats are nearly identical. The draenaei sails through this quest smoothly, one shotting it every time. The tauren cannot complete it at all and I stop in frustration. Similar strategy used--does anyone else who has done this quest with multiple races found variances in how the different races complete this quest? (Typically I will do the quest on the draenaei first, then switch to the tauren.)

I honestly can't account for any reason other than race as to why I can complete this on one character, but not another--where race is the only variable. Thanks in advance for responses.

Note that you can cast your own defensive self-buffs in the seconds after throwing the spear before it pulls you to the Wyrm.

I.E. Death Knights can blow Icebound Fortitude directly after connecting with the spear and have it's duration persist like normal, which gives you a bit of breathing room at the start to get your grip up.

Same with other timed defensive cooldowns, Paladins can also do the same with Avenging Wrath for a major damage buff on Phase 1.

All the bugs mentioned are consistent with add-on problems. X-perl and Pitbull are notorious. Try turning them off and seeing if you have the same problem.

The quest itself is easy once you practice.

Phase 1

Take off your armor and weapons. You won't need them.
Spear the dragon.
Put your fingers on the 1, 2, 3, and 4 buttons.
Hit 1 constantly, as long as your grip is below 50.
Hit 4 every time the cooldown is up. Hitting this button often enough is what wins the quest.
Hit 2 when you get a message about the dragon swiping at you.
Hit 3 otherwise.

Phase 2

Hit 1 constantly.
When the "pry" debuff gets to 7, hit "3".
If the strike misses, keep hitting 1, then hit "3" again whenever it cools down.
Mount up and put your gear back on.

It's a quick reliable 500 reputation. If you fail, it probably means that you were trying to dodge with the 2 button instead of win with the 4 button, or you got really unlucky. Just try again. Since you're naked, you have no repair bill.

I've tried your "brute forcing" several time and I find it more ineffective than to dodge a few of his swipes. Everytime I ignore the dodging, I end up dead in phase 2 because I don't have enough HP to deal with his constant attacks.

Here's what I usually do: I do two or three grips right after the take off. I swipe at him with the "3" one or two times. By now, he probably starts to take swings at you as well. You can take a few hits, but as I already wrote, I have to use dodge a few times during phase 1 or I won't have enough HP for the second phase where my HP drops constantly.
Anyways, once you dodge the hit, use the "4" attack immediately. Use grip if you have like 10-20 in grip otherwise, just keep doing "3" (until he takes a swipe at you) -> "2" (dodge) -> "4" (heavy attack) -> and start over.

I had difficulty with this quest being bugged. The pet bar action buttons refused to register until I disabled my bartender add-on, then it worked perfectly.

Button 3 "Thrust Spear" is pointless. Shuffle between 1 & 2 and ALWAYS
hit 4 "Mighty Thrust" when available. You have about 1 minute before grip fails.

Hopefully by using the dodge feature enough from phase 1 you have enough health to stack "pry jaw" 10 times & end it by clicking fatal strike.
FYI, it is possible to still fail this quest when "pry jaw" is stacked over 10 times, just ask the hole in my drywall

If you Havent done this Before I would Personally Recommend taking off anything that will take Damage (helm,shoulders,chest,bracers,etc......) Because u will fall off and die I fell off 10 feet from the ground and it still kills you so if u wana save yourself some G especially if Ur in Epics Get naked

After trying this quest a dozen times and losing my grip and falling to my death each time, I finally completed it. Yeah me.

I took the advice of one poster on here, and didn't even bother with trying to dodge the swipes. I just spammed keys 1 and 3 over and over, and used the 4 every single time it was off cooldown. It worked. finally.

Don't even bother trying to dodge and time the hits with the 4 key... you won't kill him quick enough and then you'll make the full circle and you'll be thrown off. That is what was happening to me each time.

I don't get the grip or pry icons at all, but I managed it with three tries. I have Dominos set up so the 'vehicle' bar is not my main one, so 1 and 4 and so on don't apply; but the quest bar I use as the posess bar has shift-X set as the first button (grip) and shift-A as the third (stab normally).

You have to finish the whole thing before he circles back around to the area where all the giants are; at that point he drops you no matter what.

I was hitting grip / stab / grip / grip / stab, and so on as the cooldowns came up. When the warning popped up, I'd hit 'hide' then 'stab hard', then a lot of 'grip' to up the buff again. It seems like once the drake hits 45% or so health, it goes into the second phase, and I'd do pry / pry / pry / stab until he was dead. Got him on the second stab, after another three or four pries. The two times I failed, it was because I'd taken too long and he had finished the circle back into the Sons area and I cratered.

What makes this quest such a challenge is that it takes you out of your element.

This is what I did:

Alternated between 1 (Tighten Grip) and 3 (the standard spear attack). I'd hit 4 (the big spear attack) when it was up and try and do it after I dodged a swipe. Try and dodge whenever he swipes but don't get upset if he hits you a few times.

After he grabs you in his mouth (phase 2) its easy: Just hit 1 as fast as possible until you have 10 stacks and then hit 3 to finish off the dragon.

I died several times but once I got the rotation down and understood what each attack did it was easy.

Just remember: It looks like you have to get to phase 2 by a certain time or he drops you.

Did this as a Warlock at level 80 with about 16k max HP.

Absolutely horrible quest, I died maybe 10 times before I got the dragon to phase 2 - best thing is to spam the mighty thrust as many times you can since the normal spear attack doesn't do enough damage while you also need to dodge it's claw attacks WHILE you also need to keep up your grip stack... as mentioned by Muffeny ... not worth the repair bill.

This daily quest awards you with some gold and 500 rep. with The Sons Of Hodir

This is much too involved of a quest for a pittance of rep..not to mention if you've fallen to your death a number of times...it'll barely cover your repair costs!

I'm a lvl 80 Warrior Tank and have only ever completed this quest once but not before dying at least 8 or 9 times trying understand what the hell is going on.

As of today (2/10/09), I can reliably make it to Phase 2. However this is indeed the worst phase of all. There is no factor of skill ensuring that you'll kill the drake as you can pry the jaws open and continually miss; only to be "eaten" by the damned beast.

I've withstood Ony's deep breaths...downed Nefarian...been swallowed by C'Thun...tossed like a rag doll by Gruul...enfeebled more times than I can count by Prince Malchezaar...and somehow I can stand and aim for a dragon's throat!

This daily is about as irritating as Mario Kart on the Wii. The game WILL cheat. You WILL die more times than win. And in the end, there are better ways to grind up your rep...unless you're the masochistic type then so be it. There are no guaranteed tips / strategies to reliably but this quest. For $%^&s sake, "Jail Break" was a better quest than this, and that is saying a lot.

Strip down to your birthday suit. After spending 20-30g on repairs each time I attempt the daily, I decided to try it naked. None of your armor/stat bonuses seem to have an effect so why risk unnecessary bills.

Button 4 is the key. Just grip and dodge.

Having never died on this daily since the 1-2 learning attempts after obtaining it, I was surprised today to die twice in a row due to frustrating glitches.

The first time, I managed to get the drake to 25% while flying over the cliff beyond the lake. The buttons for the phase 2 abilities appeared for a split-second, then my drake simply disappeared and I plummeted to my death.
Second time, the drake simply never switched phases. I got him down to 20k hp left, 15k... 10k... and then he flew over Niffelem and dropped me as he's supposed to in phase 1.

I don't know if this is related to 3.0.9 or if anyone else has been having this much trouble but I'd be very depressed to find out the manliest daily ever doesn't work. :(

While trying this today for the first time, I died on the part where you have to pry open his mouth and stab him. I was low health to start with which is probably why I died, but when I died my "adored" debuff for the Love is in the Air event was removed with over 30 minutes of time remaining!

Anyone farming candy bags can do this daily with their gear off to remove the debuff it seems :)

I just found it far easier to just farm Sifreldar Village and farm Relic Of Uldar. I got 10 in about the same time it takes to do that quest, they drop fairly good. In about an hour and a half I've got nearly 40. Which is worth a couple days of this quest.

So much rubbish in this thread.

How hard is it to spam 1-3-1-3-1-3 and hit 2-4 when you get the warning? That gets you to phase 2 with 100% health every time, then you just hit 1 until the stack is at 20, then press 3. Quest done.

If you take any damage at all in phase 1 then you're doing it wrong. Do not spam 4, only use it after 2, if it's not on cooldown. If it is on cooldown (and it will be sometimes) then don't wait for it, just go straight back to 1-3.

For those of you looking for a good place to hitch a "ride" on one of these beasts. The best place I found was at 60,62, on the little snowy ledge overlooking the Valley. It gets you within spearing range of their flightpath. If you don't have coords, the ledge I'm talking about is right below the "D" of "Dun Niffelem" on your map.

If you are a Death Knight with the permanent pet, make sure you dismiss the pet before throwing the spear or your abilities will not work (they make sound and display the cooldown, but nothing happens just like having add-ons enabled) and you are guaranteed to fall.

To be noted that this daily gives you 500 Sons of Hodir rep (the others and the relics, 10 at a time give 250 rep only), and about 4 more gold. I had the same Problems (ok well i didn't die ... priest ftw) ... i don't know what went wrong, but in the end i just made it this way:

Try too keep grip about 80-100 by spamming 1, if it's near 100 press 3 until grip goes low to 70/80 (if this happens push grip with 1 ) or the warning comes up that the drage attacks, if this warning comes press 2 and after that 4. Now push up grip again and spamm 3 until he attacks again, dodge with 2 and press 4 after it again if ready.

I also found this up there, but well i kinda must have missed that last times i looked here ^^

I've done it many times now. The only thing you have to do is to spam 1,2,3 and 4 and when it change "battle-mode" just spam again. If you are a death night i would recomend to have your melee at frost since you gather more health and armor then.

The best strat I have found for doing this is to spam 1(grip) up to start (go to 99 or close to) then spam 3(normal thrust). Keep an eye on the grip number and when it drops to less than 60/70 go back to spamming grip to get it back up.

When you see the emote that you are being swiped at use 2 (dodge) and 4(mighty thrust) if its off cooldown. This will help you avoid damage in phase one so you go into phase two with a high amount of health. Mighty thrust triggers a cooldown so be sure to dodge first.

Many people fall off the drake because they let their grip drop too low. (This was my original issue with the fight.)

Most. Epic. Quest. Ever!

It took me several tries, but I finally defeated my first wyrm. :)

My advice: Do the grip ability (1) three times, then your normal spear thrust ability (3) twice. Repeat. This will keep your grip up. When he attacks you with his claws, dodge (2) and then use your mighty thrust (4). Once that's over, go back to upping your grip and then stabbing him. It goes by very fast so it'll feel like you're spamming!

Once you're in phase two, spam the first ability a for a little bit (I think I did it six or seven times), then try the other ability. If that doesn't work, spam the first ability again a few more times, and try again.

My Grip is NOT working for me after about 10 seconds. I spam it with the (3) button and dodge whenever I see the emote, then after about 10 seconds my Grip is failing and no matter how much I spam I cannot get it higher, and I fall to my death...

I died in P2; and when retrying later, I found that buttons 2 & 4 (the two removed for P2) didn't work at all, only 1 & 3 (the two changed for P2).

So a little tip: if you die in P2; relog first! --- It's much better than discovering after starting a new fight that 2 of your P1 buttons are bugged.

Also can someone confirm the impression I got: It seemed to me you need a pretty quick reaction time to successfully dodge. This could make the quest exceptionally difficult for high latency connections.

Has anyone had any issues on their hunters? I do this daily on my mage, which is my main, and have never had a problem. I constantly have issues with my hunter though. I don't know why other than having a pet, but that shouldn't have anything to do with it. I typically get Invalid Target about halfway or more through the first phase, lose my grip and fall to my death. When it starts coming up Invalid Target I get it for everything, can't hit him, can't get my grip, nothing, before that everything works as it should! Very frustrating.

Fun little trick for those who are having trouble with this quest.

Start the quest with all your armor on. His attacks are based on your maximum HP, so while they may do "more" damage to you, it's the same percentage of your total HP. When your health gets dangerously low, use an addon such as Outfitter to unequip all your gear. Your health will jump back to full (or close to it) because the stamina bonus you lost by removing your gear is likely greater than the deficit HP, and you'll notice that the wyrm does much less damage to you now, because his damage is based on maximum health. Basically gives you two health bars for the event.

Edit: Using this method, you can just use powerful thrust on cooldown and ignore dodging, just keep your grip up enough in between little pokes to stay in the air. No risk of you incurring the timer and losing your grip before he hits p2. Oh, and don't kill him if you can't see the ground below. I know the dead wyrm gives you protection from falling damage, but I haven't tested what happens if you kill him while he's flying over the edge of the zone.

I dont know if this happened to others already, but if you get the bad luck of starting this quest at someone else's Wild Wyrm, you will not be able to use any of your skills, but your own grip will still be losing and you will eventually die. Be sure to start it with some wyrm at the western most part of the valley of ancient winters as I dont believe used wyrms pass by there.

EDIT: I think actually the problem is when you quickly start doing any action as soon as you get on the wyrm. My advice is wait a couple of seconds after mounting on it before doing anything.

EDIT 2: I dont know what is going on, this time i waited 15 sec before performing any actions and it was still bugged. Any suggestions?

This quest has been working fine for me since I had the 'Invalid Target' issue a week or so ago.
All of sudden today it's doing it again.
Three full attempts where I never let the drake hit me once and had him pretty close to phase 2 and just as I come around the back side of Dun Niffelvem he goes 'Invalid Target' and the grip starts failing no matter how much I spam it.

I've done this quest dozens of times and have discovered the 100% fail proof way of completing it each time... since the wyrm's attacks take a flat % of your max hp, it doesn't really matter how much you have, and armor / damage absorbing spell effects don't change anything.

Phase 1:

alternate pressing 1 and 3 immediately on cooldown. The instant you see the emote about his claws swiping, press 2 and immediately 4 right after. Note: If 4 isn't off cooldown after pressing 2, wait until the next swipe to use it. After each swipe and 2/4 combination, immediately go back to alternating between 1 and 3.

Phase 2:

If you've done phase 1 correctly, you should be at max hp or close to it for this phase. just spam 1 20 times and then 3. You should end up with around 1/4 of your hp left and no worries.

There is no prize for finishing this quest with a lot of hp left. Bandage or heal yourself when you land, you've completed the easiest and most rewarding hodir daily.

This quest is horribly bugged.

The first time I did it, the controls worked but I died. The next time I tried it, the controls did not work. I died. The 3rd time I tried it, the controls did not work. I died.

Like so many of the vehicle quests (Iron Colussus anyone?), even when it's working it's usually way too difficult to complete. Not worth it, IMO. I can wait another day and grab the other easy dailies or farm relics.

The pet bar will stop responding for you completely after you die once. Sure you could simply close out and restart the game after every try, or you could say screw this quest and spend 250g at the AH buying hundreds of the Ulduar relics and say screw this buggy quest.

Ok this is just another version of what a lot of others have said! I died repeatedly b4 i did this. If u r still having trouble try it!
I key bound the buttons to my keypad! 4-grip,5-dodge,6-small attack,8-Mighty thrust
Since u lose grip when u use small attack
1) i hit grip(4) two or three times and then attack(6) once
2) as soon as msg that he swipes appears hit dodge(5) and then mighty thrust(8) immediately. For me this has dodged every claw swipe(ok well like 99% cuz sometimes my reaction time is slow!) It also only uses mighty spear and gives ur dodge the cd when it is already on cd!

So i enter phase 2 with full or near to full health.
For phase 2:
I spam(or hit reapeatedly) Pry jaws (which is now 4) until stacks 20 times. (I wait til 20 stack to even try the final spear because i've missed at 18 stacks b4!)
Then at 20 stacks hit 6! wyrm dies! Yay! :)

Note:
If u r impatient this method is not for u! This takes awhile but gets u into Phase 2 with max health and has allowed me to down him 1st try every time! But from other posts it appears there are faster methods but i could never make em work for me! I am a decently geared 'lock but don't seem to regen enough health to not dodge. :(

oh and is well worth the 2 relics while u learn!

Anyway hope this helps a few who r still struggling! Good Luck and Have fun!

For those of you who are having a hard time getting through phase 1, this is the simplest effective rotation I could come up with that doesn't include so much as looking up at your game screen, just the 4 keys on your action bar:

The rotation:

• Hit 2-1-1-1 to start off.
• After that, 2-4-1-3-1-2-3-1-3-2-1-3-1- and repeat.

What this rotation does:

• Makes sure that your grip is up at all times, increasing it by 15 per rotation, excluding the decay over time.
• Grants an average 66% chance at all times that you will not be hit by the claw attack.
• Inflicts maximum damage so that you can make phase 2 before your health drops too far.

This the same effect as spamming ...1-3-1-3-1-3... continuously and using 2 and 4 when the cooldowns are available, just simplified so that it requires much less thinking.

If you're fast at this and click the buttons immediately when the cooldown finishes, you should have well over 50% of your hp left for phase 2, giving you enough time to spam the '1' hotkey at least 15 times, which has a 75% chance of killing.

Other minor tips:

• If you have enough hp, get as close as you can to 20 stacks, since that is a guaranteed 100% chance at a killing blow.
• If you have any HoTs at all, it helps if you put them up right before you board the Wild Wyrm. Even if it's something small like Gift of the Naaru, every little bit could help.
• Any buffs or abilities to increase armor / health or reduce damage taken would also be wise to use before hand, such as Frost Presence.

I dunno about it but... I cant get into phase 2. I keep spamming 1 and 3 and when he uses his claws I dodge him always. Still I end up without any grip at certain point. I just tested if it's possible to do this Quest without any armor in case of death and it is.

It looks like the value of dmg you receive is not altered by Armor ( would be horrible for any Clothie ) so take it off if you can't handle the repair bills ;)

Naee's comment is dead on. I was having sooo many problems doing this quest. I was dying -constantly-. But the trick is, basically read his description and keep a few things in mind: doing this quest naked saves on repairs and doesn't really make you any more vulnerable to damage, make sure you dodge every swipe, as by phase 2, you'll need to be at least over 50% health not to die in his mouth, pry open his mouth 10+ times (I did it at exactly 10 once and I missed the hit :( ), and then use the spear. Remember, it's important to get him to around 25% as soon as possible, but don't miss your dodges, it doesn't cost anything!

Edit: Make sure you do Phase 1 BEFORE about 60 seconds have passed, otherwise your grip will be lost rapidly, and you will die.

This is what happened to me. I threw the spear at the dragon and realised that I have like 70% hp, so I started to bandage, and when I killed the dragon I didn't get the quest, so I had to kill another one. I'm not sure if the bandaging is to blame for that or not, but I'd recommend not to heal yourself after you throw the spear at the dragon, just to be safe :)

ok i had to take the time to create an account so that i could comment on here...

after trying the various strategies posted on here for almost an hour i just targeted someone else who was doing it and saw their wild wyrm get a debuff of 99 grip pretty quick.

the things posted here made it sound like you had to keep it around 35

the real way to beat this is to just keep gripping as much as possible (1) and when you see yellow text appear then dodge and thrust (2,4)

of course if you are gripping at 99 and still he isn't doing anything throw in a few hits with (3)

I pretty much have done what the other guides have said. I speared the Wild Wyrm and kept spamming the grip and just hit 4 when it wasn't on CD. I would alternate using dodge and grip. I never used the small attack. I've done this 3 times now and it's works flawlessly on each attempt. I have no problems with the Wild Wyrm becoming friendly and it's damage meter was running fine. I would suggest waiting to attack it until it swipes at you the first time. I always carry some Snowfall Lager with me JUST in case.

The defeat of the Wyrm has got to be one of the best death scenes in the game. I do have to admit I thought I was dead the first time it happened.

I found it very useful to get three stacks of Pry Jaws Open and use Fatal strike. Then just spam Pry Jaws Open till the cooldown on Fatal strike is over. Then rinse and repeat. I usually kill the wyrm when im over the frozen lake.

I can not complete this quest anymore. Last 10 goes I can't get the final killing blow on the dragon even after the requisite number of pryings. Not worth my time, effort, or gold. Sorry Blizz but this is yet another pointlessly frustrating quest.

After failing this quest a few times I realized that the way its designed is so utterly retarded that you literally must be retarded in order to complete it.

PRO TIP:
Position fingers on keys 1-4
Literally mash all 4 keys. Do it at once, or completely at random, doesn't matter. It will work either way.
Continue mashing until quest completed text appears. Don't worry yourself with these silly "phases", infact don't even bother to read the abilities, just follow above advice and continue mashing.

I died two times in phase 2 ('cause too much low health from p1) and i didn't noticed any repair cost! Equip was still at 100%. Is this happened to someone else?

I have no problem with the first stage.

Press 4 (big hit) as soon as it flies in, then grip (1) up to 80-100 while waiting for claw swipe, then (2) to dodge, then (4). Then grip (1) up to 80-100 again, then (3) minor hit until it swipes then (2) dodge then (4) then grip up to 80-100 then (3) until it swipes again, then dodge then 4. Obviously adapt to the actual fight as necessary but this is the general pattern.

I keep my grip above 40 at all times but generally 60-100. Only press 4 when he has just swiped - hopefully the dodge cooldown will have finished before he swipes again. Dodging is important (be very quick with the dodge button) but it doesn't matter if you get hit once or twice. Do NOT just spam buttons - be careful with your timing & it really is easy.

Having said all that, I've just spent the last 20+ minutes doing this quest. Easily got to phase two each time and then got a minimum of 5 fatal blows in each time (6 most times). I must have put in 35-40 fatal blows ALL OF WHICH MISSED.

Blizz seem to have nerfed this quest - it only ever took 1 or 2 attempts a couple of months ago when I was getting Hodir rep (I then took a bit of time off but have been doing this quest on & off again for the last two weeks. Now it takes at least 3 or 4 attempts. Complete waste of time now, especially if you're only in it for the money - today's epic failiure is what has prompted me to say DON'T BOTHER! (7 attempts - I'd have just quit but had already invested too much time & figured it must happen with the next try.)

You are failing because you are waiting for the claw swipe to hit the 4 button, so you take too long in Phase 1, and don't have enough health in Phase 2.

The claw swipe is a cooldown ability. The drake can do it right away, or can wait a long time between swipes. It's random.

Winning this quest is all about hitting the 4 button fast enough and often enough. Yes, dodge if the cooldown is available, but don't wait for a claw swipe to hit the 4 button.

Put your four fingers on the 1-4 buttons. Don't use the mouse.
Alternate the 1 and 3 buttons, keeping the grip above 50 or so.
Hit the 4 button as much as you can. Every time it cools down, hit that button.
If you can dodge, yes, dodge.

When you get to Phase Two, hit the 1 button seven times, then hit the 3 button. If you miss, keep hitting the 1 button as fast as you can, and hit the 3 button whenever it cools down.

Do it this way, and it is easy. Really. I have beaten the silly drake a dozen times in a row this way. It's fast and easy gold and rep.

When I use #4 (mighty thrust?), it always makes me lose about 10k hp. I don't get it. I dodge every time he strikes at me with his claws, but regardless of this I always lose 9-10k hp when I use #4. Any ideas what's going on? This makes it really hard to not die doing this quest, even when using the thrust on every CD.

If the wyrm kills you, you won't lose durability, but if your grip fails and you fall to your death, you will.

Of course, it doesn't matter a damn bit that you didn't lose durability from being eaten when your corpse is floating about 500 yards above the ground, and your only choices are:
1) Resurrect in mid-air, and die horribly on landing (unless you're able to instant-flying-mount or bubble before the landing), or
2) Rez at the spirit healer, damaging all your gear.

I have yet to be killed by the drake where I was NOT dead in the ass end of space with no ledge on which to rez.

In my opinion is as follows. This is the one of the stupidest dailies I have done. The supply of Wyrms is extremely scarce, and the deaths that will occur will pay a toll with gold. The frustration created by this quest is immeasurable. I wish I could somehow force attack the quest giver.

I have huge problems with this quest, too. I've done it probably 20 times, and before the patch, yes, it was hard. But since then? It's rare I can actually complete it and my repair bill far outweighs the gold i get for completing. Here's why...

I can get to phase two with 0% health lost. Yes, it's easy. In phase 2, I can get 10 pries in with still 75% health left. Which is supposed to allow 100% chance to get a killing blow, or so I thought. I can sit there and mash the killing blow like 3 or 4 times and miss EVERY SINGLE TIME. Then I still have time to get 7 more pries in and give it another go, but I still miss. I'd say about every 3rd day I'll actually get a kill before I give up.

But here's the worst part....

If the wyrm kills me in phase 2, I die in the middle of the air without my corpse falling. This means I have to rez in mid-air. No, I cannot rez on the ground below my corpse. I have to fly all the way up to it, rez, fall to my death, and rez again on the ground.

I opened a ticket about the last part, and mentioned the constant misses with 10 pries. The GM said he would "look into it." What awesome service, and I'm sure they're all working on it and it's just that nobody can figure out how to fix this bug *eyeroll*.

This quest could be so awesome, if it worked. But as of now, I'm giving it up. Whoever designed it needs to rethink their career.

yes, its most important to use the heavy special attack on cooldown BUT -

you ALWAYS use the dodge right BEFORE hitting the heavy attack.

never bother with the weak attack except when grip and dodge are both still spinning on their cooldown.

spam grip and dodge. you cannot outlast this mob. you have to get to 2nd phase asap WHILE maintaining at least most of your health. each time the heavy attack comes available, hit dodge then heavy strike in that order, then go back to maintaining your grip and dodge. simple as that.

i tried this a few different ways and basically, only tanks with their high health let them #$%^ off doing things any old kind of way and still succeed. for pretty much everyone else, the mob gets you before you get it basically, so the above method will see you through. i consistently finish the quest just fine like this. gold is gold, dont pass up any if you can help it =]

mages can pop a fresh shield AFTER throwing the grappling spear to start the quest.

I just attempted this quest for the first time since 3.1.1, I never had any problem before the patch in many successful attempts, but tonight after 8 tries I threw in the towel. It seems that the Blizz did nerf it, & a bug got in. Just when I have the wyrm down to where it should swap to phase 2, I lose my grip. And I am spamming on the 1 key throughout Phase 1, my scrolling text is showing I have grip, I'm at well over 60% health (more like 75%+) on each attempt but when I get the little flip from the wyrm that used to indicate going into phase 2, I plummet. Must be a bug... I don't need it, I'll let Blizz fix it!

Actually, no. I've been doing this quest for long long time because it is very easy, less time-consuming, and awards the highest gold (16.20?) compare to other daily quest (13.20).

After reading comments in Wowhead, I always thought and waited til 7 Pries before landing a Fatal Strike.
But as far as my experience go, Landing Fatal Strike is almost totally random

The least I had in order to successively land a Fatal Strike was only 5 Pries.

It may take less but I recommend everybody to use Fatal Strike as soon as possible. The more chance you land a Fatal Strike the more chance you will succeed without losing health.

I land Fatal Strike on 5 Pries and even if it fails I almost succeed in landing Fatal Strike on my next attempt.

Just FYI, I always finish Phase 1 with 100% of my health, Wyrm with 20000-25000 HP (Phase 2 starts when the Wyrm has 30000 HP)
And almost always slay the Wyrm in the mountain region between Storm Peak and Zuldrak.

Yeah, I sometimes die because sometimes you fall on a mountain side with no Fin' footing (Uber skill will cost you repair bill~!)
But I've been doing this purposely and repeatedly because I want Blizz to fix (reduce the area of) the flight path of the Wyrm
(sent a petition to GM about a week ago)

This quest isn't worth doing. I died 10 times. (5 from getting killed by the drake, 5 more because your body gets stuck in mid air when you die). It's much easier just to farm up 20 relics than to do this quest.

Just finished this quest for today, so it might take a day or two. Haven't done this quest for about 2 weeks and tried it just now, I got hit once (*sob*), but 5 Pry Fatal Strike still works and got my fast-kill personal record :D I don't know if Blizz fixed the radius of the Wyrm's flight path, but this time I landed even closer to Zul'Drak mountain side, totally near safe zone.

But before the video, here is my strategy

Phase 1

HIt '4' as soon as you mount the Wyrm
Hit '1' couple of times then spamm '3'
Reminder: If your grasp reaches or goes down below 20, stop all attacks and spamm '1', '2' is acceptable
While waiting on the cooldown for '4', you may choose to spamm '1' and get your grasp up to 45-60 for later on '3' spammage
When you see the warning emote that Wyrm is going to bite you press '2' (Use '2' only when you see the emote)
Click '4' on every cooldown except when your grasp is under 20
Important: '4' will decrease your grasp by 15 and '3' will decrease it by 5. Your main focus is NOT to outlast the Wyrm's HP by attacking, 'who dies first? Wyrm~~!', no, it's about maintaining your grasp and dodge it's attack and attacking when there is a gap. Total safe number for 'Grasp' should be 50. Exceeding 40 when phase 2 comes is a total waste.
As you gain more experience with this quest, you will know when the Wyrm is going to use it's next Bite attack after the 1st one. Even if cooldown of '4' is up, you may choose to wait til Wyrm's next attack and click '2'. If this is the case, click '4' as soon as you hit '2'

Phase 2

Spamm '3' til you hit 5 Pries
If it fails, spamm '3' til the cooldown of '1' comes. This will get you to 7-8 Pries
Click '1'

Yes, in me early experience doing this quest, I sometimes had to get 12-15 Pries, but recently I have never had to push it beyond 10 Pries.

Hope this will help some people finish their 16.20 gold dailies everyday.

This is another method that I find easier, but it does take longer I believe.

Put on any shieldings you have before harpooning, heal to full health. Do not use the spear if a Jormungar is nearby, if you are in combat you will likely bug and not be able to use the vehicle commands

Phase 1
Spam 1 as soon as you get on until you have 95-99 stacks. Then spam 3, but don't allow your grip to fall below 90.
When the warning of a swipe appears, immediately hit 2. As soon as the cooldown is done, hit 2 again and immediately hit 4. Begin spamming 1 again.

It takes a while as you won't use the minor attack much, but your grip stays up.

Phase 2
Same as most strategies above. You don't really have to worry much. Keep an eye on your health bar and aim for 20 stacks before attacking the dragon. If your health bar falls to 1/5 then immediately attack him and you should succeed.

Anyone who says they can do this quest and end at 100% health are straight up lying. Anyone who says they can get to phase 2 with 70% health, may or may not be lying. For me this is definitely not the case and I am a tank. Also, They may have fixed the amount of damage you take to not be gear dependent. When I was in blood spec with DPS gear on, I took roughly 1000-1100 damage. In frost spec with tank gear on I took 1000-1100 damage . I did the quest naked and took 1000-1100 damage(and failed). During phase 2 I still took 735 a tick. It would seem that dodging doesnt matter at all.

Maybe it's something in my UI and it's not showing up... no buffs, nothing on my pet frame.

I just wanted to add some details.

If you are still on the learning curve for this quest, it is best to do it naked. This will not put you at a disadvantage, since:

Wild Wyrm's attacks cause a percentage damage.
Wild Wyrm's damage cannot be mitigated by any defensive stats.

Specifically:

Phase 1: Claw Swipe causes 8% damage, unless Dodge Claws is used.
Phase 2: Jaws of Death causes 3% damage every tick (per second).

There are some abilities which can absorb or negate the Wild Wyrm's damage:

Mages: Mana Shield and Ice Barrier.
Warlock: Fel Armor.
Death Knight: Icebound Fortitude and Bone Shield.
Priest: Power Word: Shield.
Paladin: Divine Shield.
Shaman: Earth Shield.

There are probably others.

HoTs can also be used, but since their durations are generally quite short, you won't see much benefit from them in Phase 1 unless you are really sloppy with Dodge Claws from the start.

It's a bit tricky at first, but can go naked to avoid the repair bill. The only problem with going naked is getting your stamina reduced.

If you're not confident enough to finish this w/o failing, bring Snowfall Lager or you have Levitate / Slow Fall (for more info, visit WoWWiki's entry on Fall Damage) (e.g. as a priest, cast Levitate fast as you are falling).

While possible, I think blizz over-complicated this quest. I can't tell whether or not I dodged a claw swipe, and amongst that I find it hard to monitor my own health while checking my grip as well as watching my cooldowns to know when I can dodge and when i can major thrust, not to mention watching for the text that warns you when he's going to swipe.

They need to take something out, and IMO it should be the grip. Our characters should be smart enough to grip on without us spamming "Grip" non-stop, at least with 800 Int they should.

Seems to be something wrong with this quest lately. Just failed about 4 times on it because of the same problem - I'd be doing well, dodging and thrusting like normal, when about 2 minutes in my abilities stop working for several seconds ("invalid target" message shows when I try to use any abilities), and I lose grip and fall. Definitely something changed, as I had been doing this quest with no problems before. Finally managed to get it done on the 5th attempt, and survived the fight with about 500 hps left....

I tend to do this quest in my Cloak/Tabard/Neck/Throwing Weapon/Rings/Trinkets Only.

Why? To avoid durability damage of course! It doesn't affect the damage you do to the Drake and hardly affects the damage it does to you, but:

1. You look like a prehistoric barbarian figure in you undergarments only, throwing spears to flying reptiles (very cool!);
2. Night Elf -> Undergarments -> Tarzan

I really fail to see why people are having so much trouble with this quest. I run 99.9% addon free (I've got Wowhead's dataminer installed), and I only play in 1152x864. The text for the swipe hitting shows up bright and yellow under the target bar. When you hit the dodge button, it shows up DODGED! in allcaps. Do people just not have reflexes anymore? I failed the first time I made the attempt (grip fail), and then completed the quest with about 25% hp left the second time.

It really is -not- that difficult. Spam 1 'til you've got 90ish grip, and spam 3 with it. When the text pops up, hit 2 to dodge. And then do it again if he swipes again. Doesn't seem to do it in twos consistently. After the swipes, hit 4 for massive damage.

Phase 2 is a surprise, for the first timer, but spamming 1 'til you hit 12-14 stacks of 'open jaws' and using 2 seems to be somewhat effective. 12/13/14 (I can't remember exactly) is about 45 degrees of open-jaw. Mousing over the buff on the wyrm tells you what angle its open at, not that it seems to be terribly relevant. I imagine the chance of it working is just raised the wider the jaws are.

I come from a background of twitch gaming and I tend to be observant (ohcrap 30 grip, spamspamspam), so I didn't find it to be that hard, I guess? But so long as you keep your grip up in phase 1 and jam the spear in every safe chance you get, you'll get to phase 2 with a ton of hp and should have plenty of time to get those jaws open to 12+.

Sure its not quite as awesome as harpooning wyrms and battling their riders to the death but it is still a damn cool daily. 550 rep no less. Human ftw.

Loads of comments here but I really have to butt in. Once again Blizz wants to challange us with a happy-go-lucky-different quest. Solution for this:

Phase 1: FOK! (mash keys 1-4, there is no way you are gonna fail. The cool down of all spells are timed so that you can do this with 2k HP)
Phase 2: Nuke "1" n´till you have ~10 stacks or your HP < 90%, then smash "3".

Result: kk, u puhhsht te winn battan!,grats,lol!

For all of you out the who are going: "Tis te best q evea! Amagaaad, lol, qq more!" It´s a shame Blizz gibd 40 ppl raids.

Okay, I have tried this about 6 times today, 4 times yesterday. I give up.

I followed the advice here and get dropped each time. The first few times yesterday was because I didn't understand the pet bar (I hate that I have to mouse over each one and read/understand so quickly). Then I came here and went back to try again yesterday and, like I said, more today.

Kept the grip to 90 or higher.
Hit 2 each time it said claw rip or whatever.
Hit 3 and 4 each time they were done with cooldown.

But each time it flew over the place (not even gonna try to spell it!), it dropped me. Luckily, I can use slow fall (gnome mage).

I think I'll keep hunting for the ever elusive everfrost shards and keep killin' stuff for the relics. This one isn't worth the frustration. Those of you who say it is no trouble or super easy, congrats. I hate you.

As an aside, I can't do the drake one over the Nexus either although I have no trouble with the Wrymrest daily.

is anyone else having problems actually accepting the quest? I am currently standing on Hodir's Spear and have run the whole length of it (crap this quest makes every comment, no matter how innocent, sound so dirty) and it still says I am too far away from it. Yes it does have the blue exclamation mark above it. This is my first time trying to accept it. Please help!

Edit: Apparently you have to stand directly in the middle of it, and position your cursor on the quest exclamation mark, not on the spear itself. Or at least that what worked for me.

Thought I'd be clever and avoid all the hard work, as can be done with so many of these type quests. Positioned myself over the cave entrance at 55,63 and waited for a Wild Wrym to get in range, then I hit. Sure enough it took damage. In fact, it followed a very nice circular pattern, always in play, never evading. He'd fly by, I'd hit, he'd fly by again, I'd hit again. This went on for 3 or 4 minutes till he got down to 0%. My plan was working perfectly, it seemed. I was ready to collect my prize and then I noticed something strange (aside from the fact it never attacked me) ...... it just kept flying. "Undead," Wild Wyrm apparently.

It would appear they cannot be killed by standard methods, at least not while taking quest. Naee's advice is right on here. However, I disagree about this being the "best quest ever." The BEST QUEST EVER has to be ANY in the series that include "Generiosity Abounds" - https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=13146. VOTE "Lithe Stalker" for next playable race. Nothing quite like being able to leap 40 yards in a single bound. These quests are an absolute blast, without all the silly button mashing!

Edit - locks may wish to set a soul stone on Wild Wyrm quest. I found a bug both times I died, leaving corpse to rest at same elevation as when I died. This quest is a B*TCH! Excuse my French.
Even though you don't lose durability when you die from the wyrm, your corpse is stuck in midair, of which you will fall to your death when you resurrect.
And it's also a pain to also try to find a wyrm and throw the spear at it. -__-
I'm starting to wonder if this is worth it.

I agree this is a lame quest... but it's not hard guys. Just put your keyboard in front of you, with an index finger over the 1 and 2 keys, and your other index finger over 3 and 4. Once your in position just -

Phase 1
Spam 1 and buff your grip as high as it will go, and be ready to dodge as needed. All the while you should be spamming 3, and striking with 4 whenever its cooled.

EASY, now

Phase 2
Spam 1 over and over as quick as you can, then thrust spear with 3. If it fails to kill wrm, then rinse and repeat.

I have done this quest 5 times and only died on my first try.

Oh dear god, this is worst quest ever. Few days in a row im missing that strike after 15+ stacks. And u fail in air, so u have ress in AIR, and u get 10% durability loss. I'm just skipping that piece of %^&* while farming rep with Sons of ^&*!@ez.

OMG what a terrible quest.
Is it bugged? Ive used all the techniques mentioned above but they dont mean a thing if hes dropping me despite a full stack of grips and Im still on 90% hp.
He seems to drop me instead of starting phase 2.
Im skipping this nonsense :(

This quest is well nigh impossible when there is lots of lag. It'll be too late for you to read the message when you're being swiped at, Dodging will be too late for the server to read in time.

If you'll try it anyway, hope you have Levitate / Slow Fall / Flight form

I've done this quest several times. I usually have to repeat it 2-3 times to complete it, that makes it much less worth the time and effort than doing other quests that are easier and yield gold. I would recommend doing all the other Hodir quests before this one and think twice about this one.

DO NOT DO THIS QUEST!

It's simply not worth the frustration, time, or expense (gold) that it costs. The quest is ultra-sensitive to timing, buggy, and futile. For those that have completed this..congrats. I expect your success has more to do with probability than some 'secret' or practised routine. For those that haven't experienced this success yet..save yourself some time... gold and anger, and move on. It might take you a day or two longer to get the Hodir rep. but will be worth the wait.

I've found this quest so infuriating, I had to finally sign-up and post!

The straw that broke the camel's back was the umpteenth death where I *finally* made it to phase 2, and I died almost immediately. Ok. no big deal, right? that's to be expected. Fine. I DIED IN MIDAIR. really really high. so high, that in order to be close enough to my corpse, I had to fly my wisp up off the ground. I bet you can see where I'm going with this by now, huh? Yeah, that's right. You can't rez from that high up. instant splat. dead again! WTF?

grip goes away no matter what. taking time to dodge and regrip slows down attack. just regripping and spamming attacks *finally* got me to phase 2, but I was at like 10% health and only had chance to pry jaws twice before I died. not enough time to even attempt a fatal strike. oye!

Most irritating part of the whole quest right there. I have, until today, been putting off the Spear quest, having heard horror stories from guildies and friends. I de-quipped all my gear and put it in my inventory, made it to phase 2, and then died almost instantly. No worries, right? No durability loss and all. So I fly out to where the map says my corpse is, and it's way in mid-air. Cute. I go back and accept the spirit rez and eat the rez sickess and 25% durability loss to EVERYTHING, including inventory items (my entire Ret set and a partial holy set).

One death cost me 27g.

This quest simply isn't worth it. It may take me longer to get to exalted by skipping it, but I don't care.

Found the "perfect" way to do this quest.

When in Phase 1, do the following.
Use Ability 3 "Jab" (or something similar) immediately followed by 1 until you see:
"Dragon Swipes at you with its claws."
At which point use ability 2 followed immediately by 4 and 1 - 1 to get your grip back up.
By the time the dragon swipes at you again, 2 will be recharged. 4 will take a bit longer.
Continue doing 3 - 1 in between.

So, it should look like this:
3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - Swipe - 2 - 4 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - Swipe - 2 - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 3 - 1 - Swipe - 2 - 4 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 1...

4 will not be off cooldown every time he swipes, but you will be able to use it just about every time it's off cool-down while keeping your health up for phase 2.

Phase 2: Because your health is so high from phase 1, you can affore to hit ability 1 about 10 times before attempting your first thrust.
However, 6 times should be enough to start trying ability 3. Phase 2 is a piece of cake if you have decent health left over from Phase 1.

This quest is very difficult and not worth the effort. Once at Honored you have 4 other dailies to do which will give you 1000 rep per day, and then you can turn in the Relics of Ulduar for 250 rep each, the SAME amount of rep as turning in this quest. I'll take my rep from turning in relics rather then dying over and over trying to kill a wyrm with a spear.

For some reason if i die in the worms mouth my copse floats in the sky. So, when I rez I fall to my death and have to rez again. Wierd.

This has to be the single most challenging daily ever - usually takes me several tries - very satisfyng to complete!

It's not hard at all, it's just when I get to the last phase where I am in his mouth, I press the first button at least 8-10 times, press button 3 to finish him off and I just miss. So, I have to do it again. By the third miss I'm dead. Is there a trick to it or is it just random that you can miss?

I also just spam 1 in the first faze until it says he is clawing then hit 2 then 4, then spam again continueing this until he is into faze 2, then you spam the pry button until about 10 or more stacked then hit the stab button. I recomend doing it naked, it works for me everytime. your character, not yourself, unless it works for you lol

I just wanted to add a quick note. Do NOT take your time doing this quest. If the drake crosses into Brunnhildar Village airspace, you'll phase into a Vykrul thanks to Sara's spell. The drake promptly decides it DOESN'T like the taste of Vykrul and drops you unceremoniously.

I'm exalted with Sons of Hodir on 5 characters and today I went to do this quest like I normally do and the wyrm took a different route! Instead of going east of Dun Niffelem it went up over The Terrace of Makers and came around in a circle over the Ice Steppes. I was very suprised.

Dumbest quest ever. I keep my grip high enough and still I do nothing but fall to my death. Or I get killed in midair, have to fly to my body and fall to my death a second time upon resurrection. Feels very buggy to me. The time this takes and the money spent repairing don't justify it. I abandoned it, there are enough other ways to gain reputation with Sons of Hodir.

This is one of the worst quests i've ever had to be forced to do everyday, no matter how you do it there's still a chance you kill the wyrm and end up on some $%^&ty angle of the mountain and fall to your death. Have fun!

Probably the coolest concept for a daily quest but becomes very frustrating very quickly. If you die, half the time you're suspended in mid air and have to fly back to your corpse just to release, drop to your death, and get back to your corpse again.

I've died probably about 10 times trying. Made it to phase 2 twice of those 10 times. Pretty steep learning curve and my health drops like crazy whether I dodge the attacks or not. Definitely going to save myself the headache and skip this quest because as it is, it's a PITA unless you know exactly what to do to win.

I have tried this about 10 times today and there does not seem to be any indication of how much grip I have or how many counts of prise jaw I have on him. I am therefore doing this blind.

This quest is a load of $%^&. Every time I use dodge claws, he does it again before the CD is over. When I get to the second phase, I stack as much as I can and it always says "FATAL STRIKE HAS MISSED. FATAL STRIKE HAS MISSED. FATAL STRIKE HAS MISSED" and I die and get stuck 340527306 feet in the air. Consequently, I have to @#$%ing die, AGAIN, to get my body back.

Definitely an annoying daily when you first start trying it. But, it is doable and fairly easy once you get the hang of it. Firstly, read the first comment on this quest, it helped a lot when you don't have time to read the abilities while you are doing the quest. Each of the damaging moves can make you fall to your death so keep an eye on your grip. Also other comments mentioned to do this naked to avoid all the repair costs, I HIGHLY recommend you do get naked, it is very easy to not get hit once so your health is not a huge deal til Phase two, which you have plenty of time to get 10+ stacked jaw opening easily.

For those who are still frustrated with this, keep in mind your grip is important, but not as important as how fast you get the Wyrm to 25% or below. Keep your grip around 40-50, but don't get out of hand spamming only grip.

Took me about 6 tries to get this for my first time ever doing it, this is how I won without getting hit once:

1. Get a Wrym to pick you up and start the fight.
2. Spam Grab On(1) til he does his first swipe at you, it shouldn't take long for him to do it. You should get a high grip from it.
3. Soon as you dodge, hit Thrust Spear(3) about 2-4 times.
4. Hit Grab On(1) about 2-3 times til he swipes at you again, shouldn't take long.
5. Dodge his attack again, soon as you hit dodge, hit Mighty Spear Thrust(4).

This should only take a few seconds for most of this first chunk to happen, once you hit Mighty Spear Thrust for the first time, you want to hit it every time its ready afterward. You want to use it after dodging an attack to help prevent you from getting hit with his claws while you have the 3-5 second cooldown.

Pretty much repeat step 3 to 5 til hes done. This took me like 20-30 seconds if that to get him to 21% using this method. Keep an eye on your grip though, you may use Mighty Spear Thrust(4) and lose a nice chunk just from your grip dropping itself every tick, so use Grab On(1) if you need to instead of Thrust Spear(3) after you use Mighty Spear Thrust(4).

Soon as you enter Phase 2, spam Pry Jaws Open (1) til you feel you need to attempt to finish him off. I had full health going into Phase 2 as a naked Ret Paladin with about 9k health. So I only got down to about 70% before I had about 12 jaws stacked already and got the kill first try.

Worked perfect for me, again, this is my first kill ever on this quest hope this helps someone. :)

My small guide:

Use the dodge ability as soon as he picks it up, and every time it's off cooldown. It'll help to keep your health up for phase 2. Use the Spear Thrust ability all the time, and Mighty Spear Thrust whenever it's off cooldown aswell. And keep an eye on your grip, if it goes to <20 spam the grip ability a few times.

You should have close to 50% health (I did as a ret pally with 20k health unbuffed) and just spam the Pry ability and as soon as you get to about 15% health, try and stab the spear into its throat.

This daily is the biggest load of bull crap I have seen in the 3 years I've been playing this game.

I tried using what people have said in the comments but I was too frustrated to complete this daily. There are no other dailies that require this much time and energy. Frankly it's not worth it to go through the frustration of dying and dying and dying. And I'm not going to get an addon just to do one daily.

My advice, and I'm surprised there aren't more people who have posted this, is to just skip this daily. Don't bother, there are quicker, easier, more rewarding dailies out there.

Just a side note, when you do kill him, make sure it's not on a steep cliff. I managed to (with only luck at my side) kill him, then fell, his body stopped but I didn't and fell to my death, again.

Since you can't see your grip score on anywhere else on the screen, always target the wyrm while fighting and keep an eye on it. I keep my grip at 60-90 before stabbing (1111111, 333, 11111... dodging at the right times).

I was trying to figure out why people were rezing in mid-air and then dying again. I was finally able to replicate this.

If you die on this quest in mid-air do not release immediately. Your corpse is still falling. If you release while your corpse is falling, you will rez in mid-air.

Instead, wait until your corpse falls to the ground and then release.

Dying the second time from that fall is really killing your durability. It's a great way to support your local gear repairman.

Ok I liked what dimos did but after trying his strategy over 10 times if not more, I found it didn't necessarily work for me since I would end up falling even though I used his strategy to perfection. Instead of doing that exact rotation every time, use grip continuously and when you need to dodge claws, dodge then use the thrust spear. I did this and got it right away after trying all the other things mentioned. It worked perfectly and after that I spammed pry jaws during the second phase and stacked about 15 *I only had 200 HP left and then went after him with the other attack and got him down. Hope this helps!

Using patch 3.3.5.

I'm a 'below average', Level 80, Rogue.
- Did this fully clothed, unbuffed with 21k Health.

Tried the Dimos Rotation (1-1-1-2-1-1-1-2-1-1-1-2-4 repeat) and didnt work for me

Tried the Brute Force method (described in previous post) instead and it worked beautifully:

Phase 1:

Spam 1 til grip gets between 90-100, then
Spam 4 when available and 3 when available, until grip gets below 50, then start again at Spamming 1 again (until Grip gets between 90-100 again) and repeat (see above)
I didnt find it necessary to use "2" (Dodge Claws) at all

Phase 2:

Spam 1 for as long as you can to Prize Jaws Open keeping an eye on ur health
When ur health gets as low as ur willing to let it go (in my case 2k/21k). Spam 3 (i.e. kill the damn beast)

Hopefully this will work for all of you

My reward 16Gold 53Silver and +650 rep with Sons of Hodir. :)

Phase 1: mind the warnings and be rdy to dodge when they pop during this phase (dodging will also help u to grab), than u only have to keep mighty thrust on till the second phase comes.
Phase 2: pry open the mouth (I spam it 3/4 times) than hope :D to kill the wyvern with fatal strike.

It took me about 4 times of failing this quest before I got the hang of it. Initially this seemed like an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT quest, but after I got the swing of it I was able to start doing it on the first try every time. Basically, for the first sortie, make sure you keep popping Mighty Thrust(4) as soon as the cooldown has ended. Keep spamming Grab(1) to keep it above 30, but PAY ATTENTION and stay on top of Dodge(2) when he's about to swipe at you (make sure you pop Dodge(2) quickly after the warning pops up). For the second sortie, spam the hell out of Pry Open the Mouth(1)so that you quickly have at least 15 on the meter, then pop Fatal Strike(3). If you aren't successful on the first try, don't try to sit around and figure out why, just spam Pry(1) to get that number up as high as you can before the cooldown for Fatal(3)comes around, then hit him again.

It's really a relatively quick and easy 16 gold and +500 rep once you get the hang of it!

Worth noting that you *must* do enough damage to the dragon in the first phase or else you will just loose your grip by default.

I was playing safe by spamming 1 (grip) and 3(basic stab) whilst dodging every attack.
I always had plenty of health but by the time he wheeled back around over Dun Niffelem, my grip rating dropped *extremely* quick and I kept falling.

So, use 4 (mighty thrust) whenever it's off CD and you should do enough DPS.

i think this quest is bugged in twillight's hammer. i'm keeping the grip at 50-60-70 and before 2nd phase come i'm loosing all the grip in a sudden and i'm falling..

Some notes:
(1) Don't try to toss the spear to aggro the wyrm while flying. You'll be dismounted and take damage which may end up losing the fight.

(2) Once you've speared the wild wyrm (head west out of the Hodir area and look up), the fight occurs in two phases

Phase 1 : You vs the wyrm. You have 4 moves. I'm doing this from memory (just finished after 3 tries) so the names may be slightly different.

Hotkey 1 : Grab - you have a 'hold' factor with a numeric value of 0 or more. Grab command adds to your hold factor; keep this above 30 so you can use your big stab. Your attacks cause you to lose hold significantly, and you'll also lose hold over time, with the 'over time' rate increasing as time goes by. Your grip rating will show as a 'debuff' on the wyrm's target window. Keep an eye on it, cuz if you lose your grip the quest is over and you fall, and if you die from the fall you lose durability.

Hotkey 2 : Dodge - The wyrm has a moderately slow attack cycle, and you are told when it's coming. Dodge if you can. Doesn't trigger a cooldown on your other moves. Damage done by the wyrm's attack seems to be a pretty consistent percentage of your max hp.

Hotkey 3 : Basic stab. Does about 2-3% of wyrm's health per attack , and lowers your grip/hold rating by 5 per use. Not a lot of damage but no cooldown other than GCD.

Hotkey 4 : Mighty Thrust - about 10% of wyrm's health per attack. -15 grip, moderately long cooldown.

Took me 2 tries to get into the 2nd phase, lost my grip both times before I realized where to look for the grip value.

Phase 2: The wyrm now has you in its mouth, and you have 2 attacks. I died once from the damage over time effect before I won the fight.

Hotkey 1 : Pry open the mouth. Stacks a debuff on the wyrm (like grab) which reduces the damage over time you receive from being in the mouth. Other online sources suggest spamming this a MINIMUM 5x before you try your attack. It increases the chance of your single attack working in addition to reducing the damage you take.

Hotkey 2: Fatal Strike. Will kill the wyrm if it hits, otherwise spam "pry open" and hope you dodged enough hits in phase 1 for the next cooldown ;)

ok this became a little easier when i started using all 4 fingers to spam until my grip got down to about 40 then spammed 1 and 2 back above 90 and repeated. phase 2 i just continued the same method just using 1 and 3

So to do this quest in Wrath Classic, spam 1 and 3 together (alternate to keep grip up), Dodge (2) when prompted and use 4 right after. You can also use 4 whenever you want, if you have a lot of health and can take 2k hits from not dodging. You need to be in the dragon's mouth long before it starts to fly over the village, once it does your grip will slip and you will die.

TLDR:
Spam 1 and 3.
Press 2 when prompted.
Use 4 on CD or after a Dodge.
