k This quest rocks... you will be given a whistle and you simply blow it which calls down a gryphon that you mount and you will gain 3 controls on your tool bar that allow you to soar, collect a helpless villager and drop them off at the start point at 77.49. Helpless villagers run about all around the Carrion fields around 84.49. They are running from the Hungering dead etc. Tip: Fly low and close enough to stop (on ground or low to the ground) must be in range of the villager. Fun quest.

Dropoff point is right below the "RG" in the word WINTERGARDE on the map. :)

Also, I don't know if this is a bug, but sometimes the mobs hitch a ride with you? When you drop off a guy, one or more Hungering Dead drop there, too, and possibly attack alliance. You can possibly getting your own faction killed! :( I saw a guy AFK at the FP who got pwnt when some guy was doing the quest.

Edit: It appears once you get in combat, sometimes the mob stays in combat and gets to the dropoff point.

Also, be sure to use the "Soar" ability. I disagree with the worst quest ever. It may make a little time, but it's different from the "normal" grind to 80. Only way it could have been better is to reduce the required rescuers to 5.

To those who cant access any buttons on gryphon UI:
Turn off the custom UI Add-ons. They seem to conflict in some way and don't let you to press the buttons.
I turned off Outfitter, AutoProfitX and FishingBuddy and done the quest easily.

This quest was giving me a ton of trouble, especially when trying to pick up villagers who were stationary. They simply wouldn't board the gryphon.

Eventually I learned to find the villagers that were running in fear and pick them up instead. This worked every time.

Make sure that the quest giver has 'drawn in' before you drop off your citizens. You can be moving very quickly and depending on the draw distance set up in your video config, the quest giver might not be there the moment you fly in. Wait for him to draw in before you drop off your citizens and you'll get credit.

I am experiencing a boundary bug for the gryphon. It keeps telling me I'm out of bounds and will be dropped even though I'm nowhere near out of bounds.The quest is set up to drop you if you are not in Carrion Fields or Wintergarde Keep. I actually have gotten 'parachuted' off directly over the mausoleum. It appears as if the game doesn't consider the the mausoleum to be a valid fly area for the quest when it is in fact slap dab in the middle of the keep and the carrion fields and it is well within the realm of possibility that one would pass over it on a normal route from the keep to the fields. Blizz may want to tweak that a bit to allow the Mausoleum area to be allowable air space.

This is about 85, 50. As others have said it is east of wintergarde keep and just a tiny bit south of Naxx. There's a spot where the roads form a cross road on your map with a little drawing of a building. It's there.

I was also having alot problems getting the Citz's to hope on and even to dismount. I spent an hour and only had two completed........ "Finnally I turned OFF all of my Add-ons and the quest from that point on worked fine." After completing the quest in about 10 minutes, i just stepped back into the inn, sat and turned all my addon's back ON.
Note: I had been dropped acouple times on my way back. I just started following the road back through the gates each time and was not dropped.

Ya... I had similar experiences as everyone else with action bar not responding, odd messages sayign im out of area. Re-logging resolved my issue with action bars. Still occasionally got the out of area warning, but it went much faster after i was able to use my buttons!

just curious having huge trouble from this one i have sat isp and lat stays at about 2000 and unable to pick up the helpless ones any ideas i want to finish the quest line but been on this one over an hour with 1 pickup and like 10 deaths cause it says i have to be still to do the quest

Skip this quest honestly until they make it less retarded then what it is.

Your gryphon randomly dies
When you pick people up they fall off and won't count
When you HAPPEN to save one and you take it back to the required area they won't jump off and they stay on on the back yapping
sometimes you take them back to the required area and it still says you need to be at the area even though you are looking dead at them
when they are running or stationary you won't always pick them up

so it's best to skip this quest until they fix the bugs that infest it

I've been wondering about something...

The Inn is empty (no Innkeeper, other NPCs, or even music) before you complete this quest.

Afterwards, there's an Innkeeper, cook, and a few other NPCs.

Now, I could swear on my life that these are the exact villagers I saved on this quest. So clearly, there's an instance of the Inn before and after the quest...is the after instance different for each player, depending on which villagers they save?

Here's an interesting bug:

When I was taking the villagers back to the keep, I was followed by a trail of undead ghouls who were constantly falling out of of the sky, and when I'm about to land to drop off those villagers a few of those undead also landed right next to me near the questgiver.

I took off soon afterwards and the ghouls attacked other players, and they ended up killing an AFK Druid standing near the FP.

This quest is quite important if you're leveling in Dragonblight. After you save the villagers the Inn in Wintergarde Keep will have NPC's. (The NPC's are actually the villagers that you save)

The Inn will now have:

An Innkeeper

A General Goods Vendor

A Reagent and Enchanting Supply Vendor

A Trade Supply Vendor

A Stable Master

An Alchemy and Poison Supply Vendor

A Food & Drink Vendor

So by skipping this quest you'll loose alot of things, since Wintergarde Keep is the main Alliance Base in Dragonblight

Few things about this quest...

Its seems that you can hold one citizen at a time

Going outside of the boundaries seems to immediately cause the citizen to disappear Thus leaving you to collect another one

do NOT spam the button to drop off citizens...doing so appears to override itself and cause you to lose your passenger and once again leaving you to collect a new one

These are just what Ive experienced...please say yay or nay and add info to make it a bit more accurate =D

Only bug I had with this quest was easily fixed by turning off my addons, I have a bunch so who knows which one was conflicting.

I found that after grabbing a villager, if I stopped outside the keep for a second any scourge I picked up would drop out of me. Could save somebody a little stress at the FP

Christ! This quest is really bugged. The ghouls can actually follow you in the air and hit you of your gryphon so watch out for that one. If you fall from high up I guess that is what they call "death from above".

In addition, completion of this quest opens up the Wanted! quest billboard (inside the inn) which offers three group quests.

Most importantly, this quest is part of a chain with 32 more followup quests, involving:

an Achievement;
new cinematic;
chance to frolic in Orgrimmar, Horde-free; and,
*spoiler* romp through Undercity with two very cool characters!

As a lore/quest junkie, this is one of the best quest chains in the game. Don't forgo the chain due to some minor glitches in this particular quest. Come back at 80 if you have to.

You can check out the entrance of Naxx long before you've learned to fly in Northrend using the gryphon from this quest. Be warned though, the gryphon will despawn for being out of its range if you hang out there too long, so be prepared to find your own way down if you do.

the steps to do this quest:
1. Blow the whistle you get ffrom quest giver. you can do it wherever you like. even indoors.
2. fly to area right east of Wintergare Keep. (use soar (number3) always since it got 8 sek cooldown and duration you can constantly use it.
3. when you see a vilager running around with a fear sign above it land on the ground by it and press 1. if you rescue him/her fly to the gryphon station in Wintergarde Keep and press 2. then you release the villager.
4. repeat this 9 more times.

Gryphon randomly dies, "too far away" message at inappropriate times, passenger refuses to debark, passenger mysteriously vanishes, et cetera.
Blizzard do beta-test things things before they go live, right?

I just did this with my 4th character; so while my memory is fresh:

As others have said, I would disable any add-ons before you
begin. I did, and I had no problems.

A. Once you accept quest, you get a whistle in your back pack; you have all the time you need to begin. Begin when you are ready.

B. Depending on your class, if you need some buffs, then do so because it is possible to loose some life, take aggro if this is your first time.

C. As you leave the keep, look up to the scurge/ base in the sky and fly under or near that down toward the town. You don't want to get too far out of town boundaries . If you do, you'll get a message telling you to get back. Stay in the carrion fields area.

D. Begin to look for the people running with the fear sign over their head. When you first begin it is tempting to land as close to them as possible, but you don't have to land to get them.
You can hover near them and somewhat out of the way of the mobs. Press 1 to get the villager into the mount.
You'll see him/her leap in.
However, there are times that you see this happen, but for some reason, there is no one there.
Make sure you fly up a bit and check to see if you do have your person. Use 3 to soar faster to the keep if you like.
As you approach, the flight master will be to somewhat to your left.

E. Once you land, push 2 to let off your passenger.
However, there may be times that a mob has hung onto the
mount and you may bring it to the keep.
Be prepared, they may attack you.

F. This is a good time to check your life. If you have taken any damage you can dis-mount and heal up and call your mount again. In fact you can dis-mount as often as you like if you need to heal up.
My first time I tended to get too close and I was hit by the mobs.
I would return with half life (hunter w/no pet) but my life didn't seem to recover fast enough.

I did not find that it was timed. One occasion I even had to log out and then back, I was able to call my mount and continue-must have been 4-5 min later.
So, relax, you have the time. I know a lot of posters had problems with this quest; it can be a tad stressful, but it is doable.

Also remember that doing this quest gives you access to all of the NPCs of the keep.
No one is there before the quest, once you do it, they are there.

Someone said it would make a good daily and that's probably true. This is something that you get better at the more you do it.

If it's really driving you nuts, leave for a few levels and go back.

Another completely buggy blizzard quest. I landed by them multiple times. pressing 1 never worked. Pressing the button never worked. About the tenth try, I was killed because they kept shooting at me even in the air.

Revived and tried again. After 10 more tries, gave up. Still hadn't rescued a single one.

I would as Blizzard about it except I know they'd do absolutely nothing.

I did this quest as of 2.2.2008 with no problems. It took a bit to get the hang of picking up the villagers, but after that, piece of cake! (Also, I finally tracked down the one addon that was keeping my vehicle bar from showing, which turned out to be MoveAnything- which was updated to the latest version available a while ago, so it's not an old version of MA I'm using.)

it was slightly difficult to actually find the villagers. just look for groups of undead chasing something. also, the only glitch i had was when i rescued one, it sort of fell through my gryphon and i had to find another one. this happened twice. not sure if it's somehow related to the fact that the villagers you save end up being the vendors in the keep (like so many gnomes, so many nelfs, etc). just something that occurred to me. over all, a fun little quest. finished in less than 10 minutes

edit: i forgot to mention, not a bug but frustrating: the villagers are running away from the undead, which sometimes makes it difficult to land near them (since they don't stop). this might account for some of the "bugginess" that other people are experiencing. it's not a bug, they just run out of range before you're finished casting.

This is by far the most annoying quest I have ever done. First of all, the villagers are difficult to target. Once you can get one targeted, they run by so fast that they're out of range before the pick up spell has finished casting, which by the way can't be cast while you're moving of course. So you basically have to hover long enough to memorize their running pattern and then land far in front of them. Oh and after you've done all that, half the time the villager disappears/dies after it's already jumped on your gryphon!

If it weren't for the fact that this quest is a pre-req. for other quests at Wintergarde Keep, I'd say drop it like it's hot.

This quest bugged for me too, but worked when I turned my addons off. Interestingly enough the only addon I had on at that point was the latest version of Omen, so it appears that may be the source of the bug, atleast in my case anyway.

If you are in a party and doing this quest together, make sure you stick with your friends, or at least wait or tell them to wait before turning a person in, you will get credit for their rescues.

How to do this quest.

1. Shoot the flare to call down a gryphon.

2. Fly to the Trapped Wintergarde Villager and try to rescue them.
2a. Realize that these villagers aren't part of the quest.
2b. Curse Blizzard.

3. Fly to the Carrion Fields and find a fleeing villager.

4. Land in front of them and spam the pick up villager button.
4a. Realize the buttons are bugged and you have to manually click with the cursor.
4b. Curse Blizzard.

5. Click with the cursor, pick up the villager and fly away.
5a. Realize that if you move too quickly, the villager disappears from both the ground and the mount.
5b. Curse Blizzard.

6. Collect another villager and fly back to Wintergarde.
6a. Realize that Wintergarde bugged and is showing you the phased version that has NPCs already.
6b. Curse Blizzard.

7. Land near the gryphon master and manually click the button to kick the villager off.
7a. Listen to the villager ask how he can repay you and think to yourself, "By getting off my mount."
7b. Realize you have to be standing in a tiny circle several feet away from the quest giver with the villager on your mount selected and spamming with your mouse button.
7c. Curse Blizzard.

8. Repeat 9 more times.
8a. Curse Blizzard.

9. Realize Horde doesn't have any quest like this to unlock their base in Dragonblight.

Before turning in this quest, use the bird to fly to Wyrmrest Temple if you don't have that flight path. You can fly more than halfway there and use your ground mount the rest of the way. The fly back and turn in your quest. There's also a quest out of Wyrmrest Temple that gives you a "free" flying mount for in and around parts of Dragonblight.

You can watch first how the helpless people runs. Many runs in circles, so you can easy go to place where they shall pass you. Press then the button to pick them up.
Not all are immdiately dead.
Track Humanoids is helpful. Look for moving greens on minimap, they're mostly helpless people.
If you see one, land in front of them, stay still and keep pressing button. You must not move when picking up people.

Oops, gryphon can die suddenly after some minutes... but you don't fall immediately dead, you have parachute on it.
Whistle again, get on, and you can continue.

This is a tip if you dont got flight skill and wont bother the locks for summon all the time... save this quest and never complete it before you get your real fly skill since you can use it to fly up to naxx. just a tip for those who know they cant efford it later in game. hope you will use it.

When you mount the gryphon it says when you hover over the icon in the buffs corner, "You may only fly in Wintergarde Keep, Wintergarde Mine, and the Carrion Fields."

The only place I can find these stupid citizens is in the mine, but when I go there it throws me off my gryphon. =/

The villagers you save are NOT the same that appear in the inn after the quest is done. I was doing this on my dwarf character with the intention of making an all-dwarf inn and was disappointed to find preset NPCs.

Very easy and interesting quest. Villagers are south of quest giver, bellow the big undead building, you cant miss it. Simply fly down, press 1 to let them get on ( they jump, you can even lift off while they are jumping ) and fly back. I used Soar only to get there and back quicker :).

I spent about 2 hours doing this quest. I had multiple pick ups that didn't complete but I didn't get a 'failed' message. The NPC just seems to disappear as they float down on the mount. So, if you pick one of them up, you will see them behind you. Otherwise, keep trying. For me it was much easier to target the larger NPC's like Night Elves and Humans. And there were one or two that had a definite pattern to their path and those were easy to anticipate. For example, one runs around the bonfire in the square in a circle. You don't have to be on the ground but you do have to be stationary for the pick up to work. Hope this helps someone.

this quest is hardish, takes forever, the peeps you are looking for are below in the fields and have bright blue balls over there head, it is tricky cuz you get beat on.
you have to land and get close enough then him #1 alot, it sux.

fly down to the lower part of the keep ( but don't go out of range or it drops you in a really bad spot )

any mobs you aggro will probably follow you back to the station.

it's harder than you think to pick up a villager so eight of them takes at least 30 min if not an hour.
that's an hour of ZERO xp and ZERO money or drops.

I rescued one. Just one. I saw two others (on two trips) jump onto my gryphon, but when I got to the drop point, there was "no target" and I had nobody to drop off. The first one I picked up said his thank you way before I got to the drop off point, but I dunno if that's normal.
The dudes are running as you're trying to pick them up, which makes it a pain to do since picking them up seems to be a short channelled spell and they're sprinting away from you. Honestly, I'd make more xp/money killing random mobs than I would in the time it would take me to finish this glitchy quest. I dropped it to do just that.

It's easy once you get the hang of it. Click on the whistle in your inventory, mount the gryphon, then head to the carrion fields east of the keep. Try to land on the ground just in front of the running villagers and hit "1" or the "Rescue Villager" button. If you miss, just take-off again and try once more. Don't worry about the enemies, they won't knock you off as long as you don't stay on the ground too long. Once you get a villager on your mount, fly back to the keep and land near the quest giver, then unload the villager. Repeat 10x, then you're done!

I was unable to get the people close to the quest giver so i flew to the carrion fields and landed infront of the feared people and hit the #1 key as they ran by. then leaped up to fly away and they just landed on my bird. easy beans . 20,300 exp. and 250 faction took all of 10 mins. ps hit # 3 kek for warp speed . have fun

For a bit of cheap XP, fly up to Naxxramas. Once you're close enough, you'll get 2200 for discovering it. If you're feeling suicidal, you can land and dismount, but your gryphon will abandon you and you can either jump down (and die) or hearth out.

One of the villagers you rescued had a rare statement changed. I guess her offer was too enticing for those with Victorian Age sensibilities. It was the highlite of doing this quest.

Stay in flight and hover above the Helpless Villagers while hitting "1" to pick them up. Landing and getting aggro or getting hit interfered with the "Rescue Villager" cast and I wasn't able to grab them. Staying afloat made it work.

''I spent xx hours doing this quest''

There's no reason to spend hours on this quest.

Admittedly, I was stumped at first. I kept getting dismounted from the quest gryphon for being out of bounds, but in the end this helped me figure out what was (for me) the easiest way to do this quest relatively quickly. (NOT hours but minutes)

Call the quest gryphon using the provided whistle in your bags starting from the main gate at approx. 78:48 where you'll see High commander Halford Wyrmbane pacing back and forth.

Face yourself looking down the road. It descends towards the town (goes downhill)

Follow this ''main road'' fairly low to the ground but not to low or you may be knocked off the gryphon by undead baddies.

Follow the road as it bears to the left and continues through a ruined wall / gate into the ruins of the town at the bottom of the hill. You should see the ruined Blacksmith's building to your left and what is probably the local Inn across from it to the right.

Now, simply pan your camera back and forth looking for the villagers that are running for their lives ''Helpless Villager'' (not the stationary ones: ''Trapped Villager'' as you probably wont be able to pick them up. Only Helpless Villagers seem to work for the quest.

Be Patient! They can be hard to spot as they run around like whirling dervishes and zig and zag frequently. Keep panning that camera around each time you return to this area looking for Helpless Villagers running around.

To aid you a little, the Helpless Villagers also have an ''exclamation bubble'' of sorts over their head as they run around zigging and zagging.

Fly over their head as they run and hit the 1 (one) key as you do so. You should be able to grab the villager and head back to the Keep using that same road to do so.

Caution:

My advice is to stay as close at you can to the road you followed down to the town as possible.

For me, I was able to to do what is described above several times with only one issue:

The Helpless Villager I was trying to save ran ''out of bounds'' ie; away from the road, as I was attempting to rescue her.

I was dismounted in the village, and instantly attacked by scourge. I was able to survive (this time) and then call the quest gryphon again and continue the quest as described.

This all took me approx. 20-ish minutes to complete.

Not hours.

You should now have access to the local innkeeper and other important NPC's as well as multiple new quests.

Who designed the this quest should noz be allowed to work even as a janitor at gaming companies. If you can't program the game, then don't choose it as your profession. Today I got dropped 2 times fro the gryff becase the zone coding is the S-word.

For one thing: They could add a marker on the map for the drop zone. I got disoriented and wandered all over the place trying to find it. It is well to the west of the blob that is the 'quest zone', which also doesn't line up with any of the 'you've left the area so we're going to drop you on zombies' either. I suggest when you're trying to find the people running around just avoid the areas with high concentration of undead, then you can swoop around trying to pick the person up several times rather than immediately getting knocked off and killed. What fun. (sarcasm)

[With this whistle you can call down a Wintergarde gryphon. Mount the creature and head towards the ruins of Wintergarde Village, now known as the Carrion Fields, southeast of here. Once at the fields, keep your eyes peeled for helpless Wintergarde villagers. When you spot one, fly low and use the gryphon to pick them up. Return the rescued villager here, to the gryphon station.

There are Scourge all over the place so you'll need to keep your wits about you, hero. Good luck!]
