about 20 of them run to the spot where Herod starts when he dies, and will ignore until they get there uless you attack them, so you have 10-15 secs to heal up (only if you're almost dead) but you don't really need it, just AoE them, they die within about 3 secs

also, a great (and the only) way to get the Tabard of the Scarlet Crusade

They die REALLY fast. I got Ravager on my first armory run, and before I could realize i was 2 lvls too low to use it, the trainees were dead.

As a hunter I found the best way to kill these is to round up all of them around you and then place an Explosive Trap.
They will all wipe and you will be able to loot them all.

They only have 110hp so if you're a 175+ engineer you can kill them with a Iron Grenade https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=4390

Having never been in SM Armory before, as a bored Level 63 Felguards'R Us 'lock, I thought I'd go check it out the other day. After killing Herod, I looted him. Just as I was turning to leave the circular room, a sodding load of these guys came storming in. Being the first time I'd been in (and having not read up on the Instance prior to going in), I can tell you, I almost had a heart-attack. As far as I was concerned, I was in an Instance therefore NPC's are Elites. I once heard a saying 'Never underestimate the hitting power of a hundred kobolds'. I ran for my life and checked here to see how other people deal with them.
Next day, I went back, waited in the centre until they were all round me and blasted a couple of rounds of Hellfire. My 7 year old now thinks I'm better than Wowhobbs ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN7KfJ7ZKXc ) because I do Scarlet Monastery without any help :))))

i got a boost in SM armory at 28, and if you stand close to the wall you will not get aggro.

With any kind of mage.. Arcane Blast will do the job in one hit if geared right..

make sure you have lots of bag room before lootings these guys if your soloing, when aoe'd they tend to die on each other, making loot skipping difficult,

If you're a Paladin, don't let them die of Ret Aura alone, as you won't be able to loot them. Just push a Consecration, then you'll be fine.

I'm guessing this works the same way with a Mage's Molten Armor.

Edit: Probably with the Druid's Thorns as well.

Edit: And of course, if your pet kills them, no loot for you either.

If you're a rogue, pickpocket them all before killing them. At least then you get some poisons and vendor trash.

As a level 60 hunter, using volley to kill all of them before they even make it down the stairs is a morbidly satisfying feeling.

These guys remind me of a noobish human warrior i saw trying to kill Hogger with a friend. The friend died, and he started screaming stuff as if Hogger actually cared, and I just watch as the noob tries to kill him. A 20 or so lvls later in SM Armory, i get a total flashback of the good'ol' days.

These may be the guys that rush you after you ice Harod, but I am not sure. Can anyone confirm?

Edit - Just soloed in on my 60 Druid and confirmed, they are the non-elites that rush you after you kill Herod.

U get the tabard after u kill the boss in the armoury, with all the trainee ppl. It's a nice little item, deff. worthy goin through it a few times to get one!

Well, after TBC came out, i lvled up my shaman, first run through armoury at lvl 29 and these drop - i've seen the tabard drop 3 times once on my hunter which i won. Once on my warlock which i lost and on my Shaman which i got. ! Looks very nice - but it seems ALOT more people are wearing them these days.

i'm pretty sure its more then a 0.5% drop.

Well the drop is more than 0.5% but you find that most groups wont loot all the corpses, so the deaths that thott calculates do not all get looted... if you get what i mean :D... I want one for my 39 twink :p

It takes about 4-5 times to get the tabard but its enique so you can only loot it once unless you sell it or destroy it.

Any good 29 twink wears this instead of a purple guild tabard.

Ran Armory for the first time today, and after we kill all of the trainees we find 2 tabards. Everybody needs, and of course I win both. stupid unique item.

Easily solo'd as a 66 druid of course, just stealth through the entire instance and kill Herold. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes. Shift out, wait for the trainees to come down, throw barkskin on and then use hurricane.

Got it on my third run, along with 3 stacks of silk cloth and about 20 red rocket firework things. It's a nice tabard, wish the flame was on the back, too though.

If you examine someone in armory for ex Boseiju who is a 70 BE paladin on Zul Jin, you will see that according to the WoW Armory that the drop rate is considered (extremely low) 1%-2%.

this drop seems to be taking forever. I have taken out herod with my 70 BE hunter about 10 times and i have never seen this drop off the trainees that rush in afterwards. i am going to keep trying but its making me want to give up. About 20 trainees rush the room, and i have done this ten times so i have killed at least 200 of them and it has not dropped yet...
very low drop rate... maybe the new update has something to do with it.

As a lvl 48 rogue, I stealthed to herod, Killed him, then in came the trainees. The second one i looted dropped the tabard. Guess i was lucky.

Been farming the Armory many times for Fiery Enchant mats (the drop from herod becomes one of the 4 shards you need). This tabard only dropped once for me.

I am so happy. I was doing a SM Armory run with a level 70. Guess what? I got it. I was so happy because I really wanted one. I got it on my first run! LOL! Now all I want is the Deadman Ring from Archmage Doan in SM Library!

These guys also have a decent chance to drop the Troll's Bane Leggings...as far as world drop rate goes. im wondering if i could sneak through with a 50 pally just so i can kill the boss. seems kinda iffy.

3rd run i got i was thinking maybe it only drops if your running someone but nope so im happy and o yeah the ppl that dropped dropped some nice greens for the GV...Guid Vault for how ever doesnt know this

As of 1.11, these guys now drop Tabard of the Scarlet Crusade.
Easy to solo the armory with a 60 hunter - FD past the two or three groups of mobs you can't sneak post, take out Herod, then kill all the trainees in one blast with an Explosive Trap. Simple. Took me five runs to get, but each run was only three or four minutes.

I have done about 30 runs and only killed Herod, Arcane Explosion'd the crap out of the trainees but never looted.

Have been running it constantly for days, swapping to Classic Hardcore to wait for instance restriction to subside.
I got it on my paladin after 4 attempts from these guys, but it just will not drop for my warrior. I had to login to my paladin to make sure I wasn't gaslighting myself into believing I had it.
It says it's a 1.9% drop chance, but that can't be right. There's 20 of these trainees that run in, and if each one had a close to 2% chance of dropping it - I should have it by now.
107 attempts on my warrior thus far, still no luck.

This is using the Scarlet Key that dropped from the Headless Horseman recently, to enter the Scarlet Crusade of Old. The same place that it dropped for my Paladin.

Edit: Rip to myself --- this item is Unique, if you already have it on a character, it WILL NOT drop a second time unless you delete the first one. I suddenly got suspicious and went to check my bank. Lo and behold - I already had it hidden away in my bank bags. Ouch.
