If you're doing the tribute run, it's easy to have a Shaman/Paladin/Druid offtank the observerr while you DPS down the King. Depending on your tank's gear, he can hit pretty hard though!

Did the tribute run easily by having a rogue, tank, and Moonkin DPS him down while a hunter (myself) kited his priest and kept him out of healing range of the King. I would not recommend kiting him with Aspect of the Cheetah on, because he has ranged attacks which will daze you. The fight is pretty straightforward as long as you can find a way to keep Cho'Rush from killing the King.

Got him down to 40% as a level 70 rogue with some blues and some greens. SUPER easy to solo this if you got epics and/or 1 player with you. A healer would make it even easier. But another dps would also get him down.

Solo'd as a feral Druid in decent tanking gear and bear form earlier today no problem, no healing required (aside from Imp. LotP). Hell of a knockback on the King though, but that's what Feral Charge is for. :]
Had to kill the first guard for his key though, so the tribute chest loot wasn't the best. :[

easily solod as a lvl 70 rogue in full epics t5 and some t6. 1 word "owned". You do not however get any buffs anymore from the guards left alive.

How can you do the Tribute Run, when Guard Mol'dar drops one of the keys required?
I've tried killing Mol'dar, exit the instance, reset and go back in, only to discover that the key was gone..

As an epic rogue i farm North DM daily 10-15 times...just go pvp gear if u have resi and stamina will help a lot...and premeditation too gives u 2 x evasion...ignore the mage use all u got cloak of shadows, evasion and mostly expose armor.Do this and it shouldn't be a problem.

Soloed without much difficulty as a 70 pally in season 2 arena gear.

Quite easily soloed as a 70 shadow priest. He doesn't hit you for so much when you are in Shadowform and you have Inner Fire up. He also uses "nasty" knockback (much like new Disengage) which gets you 20 yard away from him.... Ogres aren't much clever :)
If you are going to die, send Shadowfiend and use Fade (in 3.0.2 it wipes all your threat for 10s), so he won't attack you. Dispersion just for sure.

According to Wowhead he reacts friendly on Horde. How does this work out then?
EDIT: did it myself and Gordok isn't friendly to Horde or Alliance.

All of the items he drops have a low vendor buy price. This would be due to the high amount of teleport hacking farmers in the classic WoW days. Hunters would solo this boss constantly using set teleport hacks to teleport between the high pillars in his room, switching back and forth whenever the King would get close. This boss had a nice chance to drop a Foror's, which made him a prime candidate to farm.
This is (sorta) the case with Arcanist Doan in SM Library. Back when Classic WoW was in beta, it wasn't too difficult for a high level character to solo the place and snag an Illusionary Rod, which vendored quite well back in the day. It was deemed too easy of a way to make money, and was nerfed substantially.

To those wondering why it says he's friendly to Alliance, once you gain the King of the Gordok buff ALL the ogres become friendly. Even the dead ones. I just killed him and got the buff, then checked and sure enough he was green.

I dont know why yall are killing even a simple mouse, That tribute run can be obtain with literally everything unscathed and nothing harmed. I didnt even have to kill that "guard boss" for the key to the door, I just walked up, looted the chest, took the key and, open the door and continued on. If you're killing him then I guess you're just bad and wont get full 100% tribute like I do.
Solo'd King Gordok as a lvl 80 mut rogue, Easy as pie.

So, I guess, you can become King regardless, just get more Tribute if you leave more alive.
Right, I think you can kill every ogre in the instance and you'll still get a tribute chest, but it will not have any armor or weapons in it at all, just food or potions.
I have been farming DM for rep with the Steamwheedle Cartel. I used to only clear ogres that could drop the shackle key, but eventually I decided I should switch to enchanting, kill the king and disenchant his drops for shards. At first I stuck with the habit from tribute runs and ignored Cho'Rush the Observer, and the tribute chests would have food, potions and a green item or two. But a couple days ago I looked up Cho'Rush, out of curiosity, and he drops blues too. So now I kill him before the king, and the tribute chest doesn't have at green items at all most of the time, just food, water and health and mana potions.
When farming the key I always skip the drunk ogre near the start. I think he counts toward the tribute (not sure, though) and if he does, then it might be possible to get no tribute at all by killing him, the guards, Captain Kromkrush, AND Cho'Rush. I don't know. I'll try it next time and see.

Confirmed. I did another key run over the weekend. I killed Guard Mol'Dar, Stomper Kreeg, Guard Fengus, Guard Slip'kik and Captain Kromcrush. I also killed Cho'rush the Observer BEFORE killing King Gordok, and I still got a tribute chest. However, there was only food, water and potions in it.
Of course, you generally wouldn't want to do this. Kreeg's only drop is a green item with an actual downside, and that isn't even a 100 percent drop. For me, all I got was some exotic alcoholic drinks. Which is cool and all, but still.
However, it is useful to know that the Tribute Chest isn't a simple, binary, "is it there or isn't it" thing. You can kill some of the named ogres and still get a tribute. If you're running DM for some reason other than tribute runs - farming Steamwheedle reputation like me, or farming Pristine Black Diamonds or librams or Foror's Compendium - but you decide you might as well maximize your loot while you're at it, it's useful to know how. Kreeg has no useful drops. Mol'dar and Slip'kik all have a two-thirds chance to drop one green item from a shared loot table a one-third chance to drop one blue item, again from a shared loot table, while Fengus only drops items from the green loot table. Kromcrush and Cho'Rush will always drop one blue item each if you kill them. Kromcrush also has a couple items that would be useful to DK tanks, if for some reason they decide to get geared up before going to Outland. However, I'm pretty sure they do not contribute a guaranteed blue item to the tribute chest. At least, I know Cho'Rush doesn't, but I only left Kromcrush alive a couple times so I can't say for sure that I remember correctly.
So if you want to get as many Large Brilliant Shards as possible in a single DM run, I'd recommend killing Kromcrush and Cho'Rush. And if you are a rogue or engineer or blacksmith then skip Mol'Dar, but if you aren't then kill him and don't feel too bad about it because you'll have a chance of getting a blue item that way too. You're guaranteed to get at least four shards this way (Kromcrush and Cho'Rush each drop one item, and the king drops two), you have a chance of getting a fifth from Mol'dar, and with Kreeg and two guards left alive you'll get one or two blue items in the tribute as well. Between five and seven Large Brilliant Shards in 15 minutes gets lucrative.

who is located in the grassy area of the court yard when you enter Dire Maul North. It took me a bit to find him because it's not specifically mentioned anywhere that I saw, where he is located. Hope this helps.

just killed him on my 80 (fun run) and realised his throne (seat) has the head of what would be a mamoth, so the gordok ogres obviously came from northrend at some point bringing with them some items that perhaps they thought tribal and precious, also if not that it could have been a smaller pit lords heads if they came from outland, but that doesnt seem likely.

Don't be lulled into complacency by these folks saying he's "super easy" or "a joke". He can crit MS for over 3K, so make sure your healer gives the tank their full attention. Also be warned that it's significantly more difficult now that you can't just kill the Observer (if you want the full tribute).
My first group here wiped a couple times (pally, druid, hunter, rogue, me (warlock)). The first time, we didn't realize that there are spirits around the rim of the arena floor that kick the crap out of you if you try to leave the ring.. we tried to pull the king out of the ring and got owned. Second try, we had the hunter pet offtank the observer while I kept curse of tongues on him, with the druid healing both the pally (our tank) and the hunter pet. The pally got MS crit/regular hit 2-shotted while the druid was healing the pet.
The second group I came here with was me, pally, pally, hunter, druid. Not ideal, but it's what we had. We tried the same strategy as the previous time, except I had the felhunter out for spell lock on the observer (didn't help all that much). Again, the tank was the victim of an unlucky crit while the druid was busy healing the hunter pet.
Now here's what I recommend:
we decided to let the druid give our tank his full attention and just drain all the observer's mana. The hunter pet started out tanking the observer while I had my felhunter out for spell lock. I kept curse of tongues on him and used drain mana while the hunter used viper sting (I couldn't believe it either... I managed to find a use for both the felhunter AND drain mana). The hunter's pet died in there somewhere, but once the Observer was out of mana (took about 30 seconds) my felhunter could tank him easily with tainted blood and an occasional health funnel from me. From there, it was a simple matter for the hunter and I to bring our DPS to bear on the king and take him down.

as you long as you have a priest as your main healer you shouldnt have a problem. i (hunter) put my pet on the observer and kept my eye on his health while our shammy, warlock, warrior, and priest kept thier full attention on the king. i threw a couple aimed shots his way and in the end the king falls over like a one-legged ice skater.
the observer must live.
he even says he'll make your tribute better when you defeat the king. killing the observer is idiocy. King still hasnt dropped the sword though. i must be really unlucky.

The king is pretty tough yes, but not t tough. He is well belanced and fun to fight to.
I killed him with a group twice.
Group: Warrior, Priest, Hunter, Mage, Rogue: All LVL60.
First run:
The rogue didnt had lockpicking skill to open the door so we had to kill one guard, what caused less items in the Tribute.
First run:
Me (hunter) offtanked The Observer with my pet (tiger), when King Gordok was at 30% my pet died, after that The Observer attacked the priest, the priest died, then the mage died, then the warrior died and me and the rogue were able to finish Gordok off.
We waited for the 3 to get back and looted Gordok. Not a very succesfull run, but we managed.
Second run:
Same group, but an other rogue with a good lockpicking skill.
We kept all the guards alive this run, what caused for 1 extra blue item in The Tribute chest (btw, when you kill the guards anyway (not recommended), they drop #$%^ty stuff).
Me (hunter) is alchemist, i used an invisibilty potion, walked towards The Observer, throwed an IceTrap to his head, what caused him to freeze for 26 seconds (i`ve improved Icetrap). When the icetrap broke i did the same thing as last time, let my pet tank The Observer while i constantly healed the pet.
The other 4 were able to finish the king off without really much problem, we had a good priest.
When the king dies, The Observer becomes friendly, so you dont have to kill him off.
Hope i helped some players with this info. :)

I've done this at over a dozen times now. First two were learning experiences, but it's no problem at all now. I'm a druid, and the group makeup I've found that works for me is to have a warrior and either a second druid or a priest, and then the last two slots at least one dps and anything else. Warrior tanks the king, second priest or druid ignores me and only heals the others; I offtank the observer and handle my own healing so that they don't have to be distracted. Never failed!
And by the way - druids, DM is worth your time! It's full of awesome leather heal & spell damage gear!

He's not terribly hard. Our group (well, me) decided we should kill the observer, and no one had a problem with it. I really fkn wanted his shield. the plan was for me (shammy) mage, and lock to superpowerwordfocuswtfpwn the observer while our priest and warrior played tag with the king.
Unfortunately, the king is VERY good at tag, so much so that our priest got stunned and then our favorite move MORTAL STRIKE came to our warriors face!
We got the observer down before we wiped, so then it was just matter of getting back up and having double healing on the warrior while I threw the occasional shock and whatnot. Fell pretty easy without having to worry about caster. Didn't get CRAP from the chest (we had to kill guard 1 for key, stupid asses didn't bring any skele keys or charges) and killing the observer didn't help. warrior did get a new sword though.
ALl in all, this is a really fun fight, and with the exception of the dual warlock pull right before the ramp near slip'kik, it's not hard at all. I'm definately lookin' forward to doing more runs.
Oh, and for the record, you don't HAVE to bring the thorium and frost oil and whatnot, it just makes things....erm...well, interesting.

was v easy - my first run for tribute last night and I (pally) off tanked the observer and the war, hunter, mage and priest dealt with king. He went down like a sack of sh*t.
2 blues off king and 3 blues and 2 greens from tribute. Not bad - took about 1 hour 20 mins. Will be doing loads more of these runs now that I have checked out king/tribute loot tables. Way quicker than 5 man scholo or strat with much better chance of getting loot than raids.
Got barbarous Blade - mmmm nice. Got that tasty mail too on a greed roll - seems a shame to waste a nice piece like that on the vendor but our hunter v well equiped.

Look, i'll tell you a trick just get a rogue walking in and aggro both. King will come first and add behind, then the rogue walks up to the tank and vanished ,if the warrior is close enough he will only aggro the kind that is in front and the add will go back to his place.you have succesfully vanish pulled without an add now!

Myself as full Protection Tank Paladin
Full Holy Paladin playing the melee DPS / OH role
Epic'd Resto Druid (healing only)
Frost Mage seeking some heavy-hitting gear
Warlock for extra ranged DPS.
The fight to him was harder than this fight. Paladins tanked and we focused on downing the Observer first, then focusing on the King. Easy as pie.
The drops were horrid, but then again, I didn't know much about DM North anyway, or how to do the Tribute properly. Ah well, I needed it for my Tier .5 quest (Ogre Beads)

Dramatically fun fights, VERY good loot(we had two blues drop from king himself and three from the chest).
Tarnished Elven Ring is a nice DPS item for anybody(in this case, Feral Druid...as Warrior chose Barberous Blade).
Well worth listening to what the other bosses say to you on the way out after you make yourself 'King'(which also gives you buffs).
