*Being a forsaken warlock engineer with a deepdive helmet and a hydrocane, buffed with underwater breathing spell and a greater underwater breathing elixir. That should take care of ya :P

One of the best things about this staff is that weapons are changable during combat. So you can use it to reset your breath, then switch it with your main weapon to basically breathe forever underwater

This baby let me chase down and terminate a tauren druid in the sea just off of Darkshore - They died from a combination of running out of mana from shape shifting between sealform and casterform to heal, and sheer shock at the mage that just wouldn't drown, even though we were both perilously close to the fatigue boundary and down quite deep.

Easily soloable as 49 Mage as you can bypass all mobs to Viscous Fallout & also bypass all mobs out for a reset of the instance. (Could probably come in at 44). At this level you can survive agroing 2 or 3 mobs if required.

Steps:
After entering portal run to the first T junction and turn left and hug the wall. At the first pylon jump down onto large COG on bottom level and repair health. Move to the bottom of the COG and wait for Viscous Fallout as his route walks right past here.

Note: You can pull him while he is near slime creatures and they wont agro.

To get out:
From cog head to nearest wall and turn right and follow wall to first opening. Go up here and into the safe area. Then go up the stairs and take first left and then turn right and either hug the wall or run along edge depending where mobs are positioned (Use the COG as reference as to where the exit is that has the portal). Run out portal reset and repeat until you get the Hydrocane.

I had a bad run of drop luck and took me 22 runs OMG

Ah...Hydrocane,this staff is really awesome for PvP and PvE :),usefull on some underwater quests,even some which are tagged as Group ones cause of the breath problem.As kazalfahra mentioned its changeable during combat so for meele classes you can just equip it when your breath starts ending and unequip it(I am a MM hunter so i dont need to do that).Also usefull as a nightelf to dive in the water and shadowmeld-enemy players wont find you that way.(Btw Badadz when i was at that lvl it droped on every run i went and it also fel while boosting a friend,so you really had bad luck :P)

Hydrocane is a 2h staffwith +15 frost damage thats allows underwater breathing. It is dropped by Viscous Fall out in Gnomegeran (instance in Dun morogh).

Does anyone know if Blizzard has lowered the drop rate on the Hydrocane, or changed things so that it drops from a boss other than Viscous Fallout?

In the past week my husband and I have done the first part of Gnomeregan almost 20 times over two nights trying to get this amazing item. (He’s a lvl 45, I’m a 36.) No luck. We’ve gotten the Toxic Revenger 4-5 times and those damn Acidic Walkers every other time.

Everything I’ve looked at lists the drop rate for the Hydrocane around 18%, so either we’ve had bad luck, Blizzard has changed something, or there’s some other factor at work here. I’m stumped. Does anybody have any ideas on what the problem might be?

Blizzard FINALLY brought out a replacement for this item for high level fishers in Lich King, see https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=44050.

It requires that you grind Kalu'ak dailies to exalted and have 300 fishing. And if you achieve that, you'll have an extremely good fishing pole, with good melee capabilities and endless underwater breathing (throw away all those potions!). Finally melee users can retain some melee capacity while being underwater, if you notice that the fishing rod does 186.5 dps.

Remember when you used to raid SSC and had to go under water. It could have been usefull there, yes, this is definitely usefull in all levels.

This one is awesome for every class that can wield a staff, not so much for for its stats but because it has Underwater Breathing on it. My level 60's still has this staff just so you can go under water for along time when needed.

Often I get asked why I am under-geared. It's just that I forgot to take off my Hydrocane after some serious underwater time.

the cool thing is you can have this and your normal staff on one of your sidebars and switch back and forth when you can to recharge your breath but still fight using your better staff. Very useful.

Extremely useful when going AFK in the Plaguelands, or rather any zone with swimming parts. There aren't too many mobs underwater so you're relatively safe.

Just a bit of trivia.

This item's water breathing effect used to be "Passive: Allows underwater breathing.". This meant that simply having the item in your inventory gave you water breathing. As a result, it was one of those useful items that people would carry around.

At some point, it was changed to on equip.

Great item for Horde Druids who want to AFK in AV without being reported. Just head for the lake north of Icewing Bunker, equip this, drop to the bottom of the lake stealthed in cat form, and you should probably never get reported.

You might also pick up a bit of free honor from all the stupid Horde who fight on the low road on the way to Stormpike Graveyard. Just remember to pop Tiger's Fury every few minutes so that you don't get the auto-afk.

If you get this drop, keep this staff in your inventory. It relatively useless as a primary, but the underwater breathing aspect of it is INVALUABLE.

It drops off an elemental called "Vicous Fallout" in the Gnomeregan instance, there he patrols between his fellow elementals. If you've ever been there, you should know what I'm talking about already. Just jump down the ledge and wait for him to come.

The thing is, he's quite easy to solo and you can do hourly runs (as long as you're +27). And, even if you fail getting Hydrocane, Toxic Revenger (dagger) and Acidwalkers (cloth boots) also sells quite nice (especially for items around that level), so the doing is not completely hopeless.

Hydrocane has little use for Warlocks, as mentioned, but even druids with Aquatic Form may find it easier equipping another stave than start shapeshifting underwater. This item is a must for every class!

Another step-by-step guide (for 60's or whatever...it matters not):

- get in a group
- instance in
- leave group
- run down the path
- to the left, drop down to the gear
- /target viscous
- wait for it to come close, then aggro it, solo it
- if it drops, yay. If not, log out
- log back in, you will be at the entrance
- instance out
- grab another guy
- instance in
- repeat

was solo running through with my 60 hunter and was just basically killing everything..picked this up and didn't even know what it was until i went to sell it and noticed the underwater breathing..lives in my inventory now permananently! great tool! even managed to level up my weapon skill with it because it doesn't do all that much damage against higher level healer dude...just stand there and let the guy heal himself most of the time.

For quests that make you swim, priceless.

Don't forget about the PVP advantage this gives you. Nearly instant full breath without wasting a potion or any mana.

And, to think, I almost sold it. Very much worth the farming effort.

I got this with my mage. By then it was the best staff I had. Now as lvl 60, I still have it next to my trinkets in my inventory. Great in Booty Bay where you have to kill underwater elite murlocs, and several other stuff.

Also, when I was lower lvl in STV, it was a great way of escaping horde (swimming under water with blink, makes it harder to get caught). :) It's also useful if you need to go AFK for a while (if there's no mobs under water) - swim down and stay there, quite safe from mobs and opposing hordies (or vice versa).

Got it on my 5th try. I just ran in the instance, ran down the first hallway ("Clockwerk Run"), jumped off the ledge to the ground floor in the Hall of Gears, and waited a minute or so for Viscous Fallout. I'd kill him and then run left (left if your back is against the wall) to the door into the Dormitory. I'm a priest, so to avoid any fighting, I cast Mind Soothe on all the troggs on the stairs, run through the Dormitory area (the place with the machines to wash the Grime-Encrusted objects), and up the next flight of stairs to the ledge circling the Hall of Gears. I turned right and Mindsoothed everyone along the way back to the Clockwerk Run. If you're high-enough a level, you can just turn on PW:S or some equivalent and run through all the troggs. I'd go through the instance window, right-click my portrait, hit "Reset all instances" and try again.

Loot: Acidic Walkers x2; Toxic Revenger x2 (but that's unique so I only got to keep one of them), and Hydrocane.

took my lvl66 hunter in there, killed him twice cant loot the staff, was able to loot the bubbling water no problem, did blizz patch this so you cant loot blue items far below your level to prevent shard farming?

edit: nevermind. disabled all my addons and was able to loot - probably was "auto bind on pickup" addon preventing me from picking it up

Using this with my lvl 28 warrior its a blast! good damage, ppl are all but set out when i duel, but beats the living sh.. out of most ppl my lvl:)

Its a bit untraditional but what the heck i can have fun and go deep sea fishing all i want.

Ok, If you want to farm this fantastic questing stave for everyother class besides the Pimpin Warlock all you have to do is ...

-enter gnomer
-walk striaght off the edge after taking care of the 2-3 troggs in you way and then jump.
-heal up and search for the viscous fallout
-kill fallout, if doesn't drop you can still sell all the blues (which are excelent gears for mages and rogues mid 30 lvl)- for about 5g per 30 minutes if you are efficient (sell in the clean zone to trash vendors)
-avoid fallouts by stealth or just kill yourway to the clean zone
-climb stairs to dormitory, and exit instance
-RINSE AND REPEAT I EARNED 10GOLD IN 1HOUR OF FARMING THIS GUY ON MY ROGUE lvl 41 GOT THE TOXIC REVENGER FOR ME AND MY ROGUE FRIEND AND GOT THE STAVE FOR BOTH OF US. Its worth its while. keep it forever unless your cool and decide to roll engineering as a profession and make a deepdivehelm.

and before you start farming like mad for this, remember that EVERY quest since BC has supplied you with a breath-under-water potion should you need it. ALL OF THEM.

so that leaves even the kalu'ak pole totally useless, whatever, we can farm anyway in the hopes we get an underwater expansion where we'll be the only ones who can breathe (good luck with that...)

At some point this was stealth nerfed and it was changed from a Passive effect (worked in your inventory) to an Equip effect (must have it equipped for the water breathing to work). For mages this isn't too important, but for all the rogues who took time to farm one, it's disappointing.

this is one of those items that, pretty much no matter what class, as long as you can equip it, you'll use it till you stop playing the game... srrsly i'm 64 and i'm STILL find a use for this on my mage... farming elementals underwater, this item makes it SOOO much easier.

i really love this staff... i got it umm 3rd kill, in group. running group loot with need v greed ideal running and beat out the Druid that rolled agasint me :D i got it the level before i could use... it was fate ^^ some quests (like wetlands cursed cre etc) quests are so easy with this :D i'm never getting rid of it.

Got this in my first run, on my first character, wasn't even trying for it... and now, I'd never give it up. Didn't replace it till I got the Rod from the Library in Scarlet Monastery, and I still always keep Hydrocane in my pack just in case.

I didn't know what this was or where it dropped. O_o. I had went to gnomers about 3 or 4 times and it dropped and i was like omg. O_o I have an Emberstone Staff but this thing kicks ass. And I was the only one who could use a staff in my party. So. Yes. I got it. ^_^

heard of these randomly in WoW. went and farmed same night, got on 8th run. at lvl 60, it was like 5 mins a run so im really excited. its cool looking which is nice, and infinitley useful in practicality! ill keep this forever for sure just to mess around with. just go in instance, run to end of that first hallway, drop down to the big cog from this upper ledge to the floor where the viscous fallout is. its a lot of dmg (like 50% at lvl 60) so be careful. kill him, and go out through the south towards the dormitories. when the word "dormitories" comes up, go right to the clean zone where gnomes that didnt get infected live. hand in any grime-encrusted objects u might have gotten, a nifty bonus, and then go up the ramp, and turn right when u are back above the viscous fallout room. take the 2nd tunnel on ur right to exit. invite someone randomly then disband group while still inside to reset the instance, then leave, then come back in and keep repeating till you get this sweet item!

I play a Druid and when I was doing Gnomer this dropped and all in the group rolled. When I won some of the others were upset because we were playing need before greed. Because I'm a druid they felt that I did not need the effect. All I can say is that the druid swim form is meant for travel only. We do a minimal amount of damage and have no spell casting abilities at all in swim form. Having a staff like this is huge for underwater areas, especially for a druid who needs to worry about keeping others healed and not wasting their mana switching back and forth to sea lion just to breathe.

Dropped on what was probably my 12th solo run! >< It dropped once before my solo runs, when I was taking some low-lv guildie alts through, so the drop rate is pretty accurate.

This staff would be useful in any situation where you have to go underwater. I wish I had this when I was doing The Doomed Fleet quests in the Wetlands.

Good thing about this is that is your a feral druid you don't have to breath for air when killing in water, just equip the staff and you become a underwater breathing cat or bear =P

Got this 3rd solo run with 52 hunter. I'm sure there is a better way in but i just ran to that center location (feigning as needed) then jumped down. Then I bandaged and Viscous Fallout was right there. 3 minutes in/out.

Nice for underwater grinding. I also plan to use to evade unwinnable PvP battles - dive in / go deep / wait em out. Also will be a beautiful thing to freeze trap a PvP enemy down deep when they are low on air.

In Classic this item is invaluable for Hunters. You might run Gnomer and pass on the item but I beg you to reconsider. There are tons of quests involving underwater combat, and since mobs and you move much slower you won't need or benefit from melee, so no need to have your melee weapon equipped. Swap to the cane and dive in!

This thing is clutch for RTV farming in Azshara if you can't self-buff some kind of water breathing aid. Also pairs nicely with Azure Silk Belt (+15% swim speed).

If you're wondering whether transmogging a different weapon as Hydrocane will trigger the water breathing effect: no, it does't work. I've tested it. You'll just have to live with swapping your weapon in and out with Hydrocane for underwater combat.

Thanks to Zeep for the help on this.

Don’t use the key to the Workshop. The main entrance is all 1 pulls which you can pretty easily solo. Just make sure to only get one at a time, be careful there's an occasional wandering mob that may show up. Or just skip by running past, and Feign Death. Don’t waste any mana on shots, just let your pet and auto shot do most of the work, while you mend pet as needed.

When you get to the jumping spot, BE SURE TO DISMISS PET before jumping down to large gear. Jump down to the gear, summon pet, and all the elementals below are solo-able too. I found it best to kill some of the elementals that lie around the gear before taking on the Viscous Fallout. Target the Viscous (/tar Viscous) and mark him with a raid marker so you can track him, or he just may show up while you are dealing with the other elementals. He wanders around that area. No worries if shows up while you're clearing some room, just Feign Death, wait til the Viscous guy moves on and rez pet. Deal with remaining elemental, and wait for the Viscous to show up again.
He's really easy to kill. Just let your pet do the damage, use auto shot, and heal pet as needed. You do not want to pull aggro on this guy.

After each unsuccessful try, I exited the game, and when I relogged, I was just outside the Gnomeregan entrance. You can then reset the instance and try again if needed.

Took four tries, but the Hydrocane dropped! I AM SO PLEASED! Many thanks to Zeep.
