If you are still not lvl50, i suggest two locations. Of course, if you're a skinner. 1st one is the Swamp Of Sorrows (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=742) and the 2nd one is Dustwallow Marsh (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=4329). I suggest the 2nd location since the skinning % was a bit higher than on 1st. I managed to get 11 pieces in less than 1 hour. But, on 1st location, you will get 10 pieces in approx. 2 hours or more but you will also get alot of Green Dragonscale (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=15412) used for Green Dragonscale Mail armor (if you are a Leatherworker that is).

Drop rate on these is very bad. As a lvl68 got 16 scales and 2 blues. It took me about an hour of farming. An hour to craft one item!? Now thats a bit extreme at this skill.

The best place I found to farm these was in SoS, the dragonkin there also drop green dragonscales, and you will see in other forums to ignore the elders and go straight for the captains, its untrue. I've got just as many worn scales of the elders as the captains. Also this is an easy farming ground theres tons of them, you won't have to wait on respawns. You can continually make circles and there won't be an issue of sitting around biding your time.

they must have nerfed the hell out of these drops because I tried grinding in dustwallow, 3 scales in an hour. Went to SoS, another 2 scales in an hour. The only good thing about this is I've skinned about 200 pieces of thick leather in the process.

I just made a full circle around the Pool of Tears on my 72 Hunter (Skinner). It took me 14 minutes to kill and skin all the dragonkin in the area. I got:

40 Thick Leather
20 Heavy Leather
8 Worn Dragonscale
7 Green Dragonscale

It took me like 1hr. and 30minutes to finally get the 10 Worn Dragonscales i needed. It is a very easy and long quest. Perfect place is to rotate from the Den of Flame to Stonemaw ruins in Dustwallow Marsh.

Lvl 68 Hunter soloed ST and killed EVERY dragonkin in sight, not one drop. Farmed the Elder's in Sorrowmurk and found about 5 in an hour and a half. Den of Fire found a couple more. Not very good drops in either place really.

Just did a Sunken Temple run. Got two off of the dragonkin, and each of the drakes except Eranikus himself dropped at least one. Made out with nine altogether.

It took 5.5 hours to get the first 10 dragonscales for the quest. Now I have been in the badlands for the last 3 hours killing the same mobs non-stop and I have not looted a single dragonscale. There needs to be some kind of guaranteed drop system put in place to stop this madness. By the time I get around to making my first pair of Dragonscale Gauntlets, they are going to be worth 50 times their true value because of the vast amount of time spent collecting the dragonscale. It's boring and frutrating to the point of breaking things with a large hammer.

It makes me wonder how hard the other leatherworking specialisations are?

do people not understand how probability works? if a mob has a 25% drop rate, and you only get 1 out 20, it doesn't mean the drop rate is wrong, it means your sample is too small. kill, say, 200, and it'll start to look much more like 25%. same goes for the people that get 3 otu of 4 - you just got lucky.

for worn scales, i recommend the whelps in the Badlands - easy level, low armor, slow attack spead, and decent drop rate. you can farm these guys (especially as a hunter) throughout your 40's, and you'll get a MUCH faster total drop rate than fighting elites with a slightly better drop rate that take 3 times as long to kill!

If you are in the early forties the Sprite Darters in Feralas ( in and around a little valley next to the Grimtotem camp that's close to the main road) are a nice way to farm scales - they are total neutral and don't add if you slay them next to each other. I farmed them for about 1,5 h and got 4 scales, about 60+ thick and 40+ heavy leather, 5 greens +- level 35 and about 2 gold in cash. Maybe I was lucky with the drop rate but it's easy farming there, only a few bears or the occasional Grimtotem will attack you. The Sprites don't hit hard but have a nasty long-range manaburn attack that sucks some 400 mana and deals a part of it as damage to you, so either let your pet keep aggro or bring some water^^.
Since Camp Mojache is just around the corner you can unload vendor crap or mail the stacks to an alt. If you're Alliance, though, you're screwd - but what sane Alliance Hunter will take up Dragonscale Leatherworking anyway...

At level 60 theese scales are very easy to get. Drop from most dragons.
My favortie farming palces are blue dragons in Winterspring and black dragons in the burning steppes.

As with all things in life you get what you put into it. I'm a troll hunter(the best kind) and have made about 250gold from skinning/lw at 45. I had another alt that was skinning/herbalism and he made about the same amount. Bottom line is it averages out since you can wear some of the stuff you make saving you money in the long run. Key to making money in lw? Diversify! as in sell 1/4 leathers in stacks on the ah, sell 1/4 in armor kits, 1/4 vendor the trainer learnt recipes and buyout the cheap auctions for the pain in the ass drops like perfect deviates and dragonscales. This is what makes it more interesting and you level as your skill as you vendor and auction your goods. Its just like having a portfolio -you dont want to put all your eggs in one basket. Sure you can go with two gathering professions but its boring, imho, to pick herbs and skin leathers all the time.

Oh and i havent even been able to skin rugged leather yet but i assume that i will have enough for an epic by the time i get to 60 as rugged goes for 2.5-3g/stack on my server. I'm sure i can get about 4-5 stacks in about an hour and thats not including any vendor trash and random world drops. Also, i dont have any of the rare dragonscale patterns either.

If you really go cheap and not go crazy buying epics and blues in the ah (most of which will last you only 10 levels anyway) you can skip the 40 mount (if you are a hunter/druid/shaman) and save that for your epic at 60. Let the twinks wearing your deviate scale belts own WSG at 19 while you ride into Org on your epic at 60. Remember to thank them....

Just my 2cents- its all about looking at the long term picture!

I just bought 20 worn dragonscales on my server (doomhammer) for 3g. I guess someone didn't know the true value of what they had. Just try and keep your eyes open on the AH, especially if like me you log in for 5-10 minutes at a time quite a few times a day. It wont be long till you have enough of these to use.

I just went through Swamp of Sorrows with my 43 Hunter. Just going to get sundried driftwood and back I skinned 4 worn scales and 4 green scales. Wasn't farming, just killing whatever was in my beeline way to my objectives. As I recall, one of those skins I got 2 worn scales.

Now, since I only came here to find out what these scales are good for, I think I'll go ahead and take up Dragon Leatherworking.

Update:

Immediantly after typing this, I went back to Swamp of Sorrows to farm the remaining 6 worn scales for the Dragon Leatherworking quest. In 24 min I got 6 worn scales, 6 green scales, and about 1.5 stacks of thick leather, 1 thick hide, 1 stack heavy leather, and about 1.5 gold (cash and vendor trash)

Swamp of Sorrows seems to be a good place to farm for worn scales to me.

After 8 1/2 hours and 6 drops in Dustwallow i moved to the Swamp of sorrows and started laps on the islands surrounding the Temple. Half way thru the first lap i got 2 worn scales from 1 drop and about a quarter of the way thru my second lap i got 2 more form 1 guy. this all happened in a period of 1hour.

Soo 9hours of this crap i have my 10 scales. 150 heavy leather and 184 thick leather! if this doesnt pay off im comitting sucide. Blizzard WTF were u thinking

Swamp of Sorrows is the best place. the Dragonkin are lvl 41 to 45 and easy to take out. I did however kill 80 of them going around the lake over two hours and got 3 Worn Dragonscale and 20 green. Sold the greenscale and got some pretty good money. It's a grind but they will drop there.

Haven't been to ST, but can confirm that all the other places suck hard balls.

I'm guessing anywhere between 12-24 hours of solid grinding for 10 of the things.

There are the low 40s items that require like 20 each. Yah, right. 2 days of killing the same &*!@ over and over for a lvl 45 blue?

Yea i would definatly recommend Swamp Of sorrows too;) Go to the The Temple og Atal`hakkar and circle around it on those small island and kill the 42-45 dragonkinds i think it was. They will have respawned when you have got all the way around, so then its on a new one;) I got 11 in about 40 min.^^

Ok tired all the areas and if you can get a group and go to Sunken temple. I was dumb and got rid of LW at a low lvl but at 70 i got it up and that was the best droped place i started with 2 from a few hours of grinding and went there and blam heavy drops.

I managed to get several from the Scalebanes in Dustwallow. Do have to go through a fair few but in 20mins I got 7, so I think if you've tried the other area's with no luck this would be the place to go.

I've been reading many of the comments about finding Worn Dragonscale and have also been having similar trouble... until now. :-) I tried the Scorched Guardians in Southeast Badlands and have 5 scales within 30 minutes - perhaps killed 15 of them. So by my reckoning that is a very high drop rate (30%?). OK so the Scorched Guardians are level 43-45 elites, but if like me you're still struggling to find Worn Dragonscale at 48th level, killing these is a breeze. Hope this helps. :-)

Horrible drop rate. I started in SoS, nothing for about 15 minutes so then I went to the badlands for a good 20 minutes and had none drop for me there. I then decided to go to the burning steppes and still had no luck with them (I spent a good 30 minutes here). So then I decided to go into the temple of Atal' Hakkar and was able to skin 6 worn dragonscales after killing every dragonkin in the instance.

IF YOU'RE A LEVEL 70 LIKE I AM YOUR BEST BET IS TO FARM DREAMSCYTHE AND MORPHAZ, THE TWO DRAGONS IN THE TEMPLE OF ATAL HAKKAR. THEY ARE VERY EASY TO SOLO AND THEY EACH DROP MULTIPLE DRAGONSCALES.

I managed to collect about 22 scales after killing about one hundred or so Scalebanes and Flamecallers down in the wyrmbog near Onyxia's lair. As a lv 40 hunter I figured it was better than trying to kill the lv40-45 elites in the badlands. Sometimes you can get two scales from skinning them too.

Got 7 in 30 minutes killing the Firemane Scalebanes in Dustwellow. After that i didnt get anymore for another 30 minutes so i went to the islands around the Sunken Temple in SoS and got the last 3 in less than five minutes. I should have gone there first

I just finished getting 10 within 30 minutes. I tried first in Burning Stepes and had very bad drop rate, went 10 minutes without getting 1. So then i tried the dragons around the lake in Swamp of Sorrows, and the drop rate is very good. hope this helps :)

okay, i've been to most of the places mentioned above. if you don't have the luxury of getting a party together & hitting an instance, or can't take down the elites by yourself, really the best place for lvl 45-50ish players is doing laps around the pool of tears in swamp of sorrows. it takes me less than 1/2 hour to do a lap, and i get approx 5 worn scales & 8 green scales each lap.

i've only gotten them from scalebane captains & green scalebanes, and both kinds of wyrmkin. elder scalebanes have never dropped any scales for me, so i'd recommend passing them by, save yourself a little time.

also watch out... like me, you might get into a rhythm, going from beast to beast, and suddenly find yourself fighting the one elite scalebane that roams the area with your health way down without realizing it until it's too late. don't recall his name, but i can only take him down (lvl 51 warrior) if i start at full health & fixed armor.

if you're serious about leatherworking like i am, then getting green scales will make you just about as happy as getting the worn ones.

I bought around 60 of these from the AH for 3 gold! I was amazed at how many there were for sell even though they have a terrible drop rate.

OK, just did this. On my server, Calestraz (OC), there were two on the AH over the course of three days. While helping my fiancee quest in Dustwallow I got 7 more off the dragonkin. Best drop rate was from the armor wearing ones by Ony's Lair. Skinned probably 30 of them, so, a good rate.

Following this, I went to SoS for the last one. Spent an hour there, no drops. Killed close to 50 of the formerly elite dragons.

From there I gave up and hit up Badlands. Got close to a 50% drop rate of the black whelps there, along with the Dark Whelpling pet drop. Very profitable 15 minutes.

So, imho, Dustwallow and Badlands FTW. SoS is for the birds and totally not worth the time or effort.

I took my level 49 tauren shaman to the eastern badlands to grind for worn dragonscales. I killed 50 of the whelps (lvl 41-43), and for my trouble I received the following:

Ripped wing webbing x 28 (worth 49 silver)
Forked tongue x 14 (31s, 92c)

Small flame sac x 5 (great for dragonbreath chili)
Wicked Claw x 2

Thick Leather x 22
Heavy leather x 26

Worn dragonscales x 2 (!)

I think I will try grinding the whelps and dragonkin in Dustwallow marsh to see if the drop rate is higher.

Meh. Screw farming them. I'll farm AND buy them off the AH. If the price of a breastplate is 25g, and I can get 20 scales for a total of 15g plus farm 10 of them, I've just made a profit of 10 gold. Not as good as a profit of 25 gold, no. But a profit nonetheless.

But that's on Earthen Ring, Horde side. Our prices are infinetly better than you Alliance types.

I've been trying to get 10 of these worn DS for about 1h 30mins and only have 1/10 that i need :(. I've been farming them in SoS... i've gotten about 10 green DS's only through skinning...

This post below is 100% on the money (assuming you don't mind grinding for an hour or so and watching out for a Lvl 62 Elite dragon).

Go to Swamp of Sorrows - Located at 73.38 on the islands surrounding the sunken temple - work your way north and back between Elders and Wyrmskin jobbies. Green & Captain Scalebane or whatever they're called are the only ones who give up the worn dragonscales although I picked up 10 green dragon scales while grinding for the worn ones. All lvl 42-44 and don't bother with the Elder mobs - tried a few but nothing of note.

Scorched Guardians in badlands also drop them - though, the whelps are a bit easier to farm, and drop rate seems the same for both - too freakin' rare. (I'm surprised that Allak has the scales listed as "junk" - lol ) The badlands whelps are almost constantly camped on Malygos.

I always hear people complaining about how hard it is to get Dragonscales, but it's not that hard.
The Best way to do it is simply this!
Get together a group of 5 lvl 45-55 players who all want the scales and go to Azshara and farm the scales together. One player does all the skinning (You should all have lvl 300 skinning by now anyways) and then devides up all the scales at the end. Azshara is the best place to go, because not only can you get the Worn Dragonscales there, but also the blue ones. My group and I in about 3 hours managed to gather close to 100 Worn Dragonscales and 200 Blue. We were all able to make the armors that we wanted. If you do it this way, you'll be able to kill the dragons faster and more high lvl ones than you'd be able to do on your own. So next time you're at the Auction Hall, advertise that you want to get a Dragonscaling Party together and start farming these suckers the easy way!

ive put in 6 hours in the marsh, and only come across 5 scales 2 in one loot, 2 in another and 1 in the last. very rare at my level 43. mob does however list the drop rate 0.53% so im expected lots of time involved

Typically when I farm for these (As a lv. 39 hunter) I go to the valley in the badlands (east on the map)and kill whelps like crazy. You can also skin the elite dragons if anyone's killing those. Typically I spend an hour farming and get two stacks of thick leather and about 5 of these to drop. Plus all the other things that drop- normally the random stuff that drops from that'll give me about 1-2g and the thick leather sells for 3-4g a pop. Keep saving up those dragonscales and you can make a ton of money. You can make around 15-20 g in about 3 hours and also got 3 bars from leveling. Lol.

As a few people have said, I find Swamp of Sorrows to be the best. Even though the drop says only 1-2%.

After a short day at the east of SoS, I had 20 worn dragonscales, 30 green, and lots and lots of thick leather.

I spent 1 hour killing dragonkin in Swamp of Sorrows (I left when my arrows ran out). In that time, I found 20 green dragonscales but the worn dragonscales practically refused to drop. When I first started, I had 288 skinning. The funny thing is as soon as I hit 300 skinning, they started dropping worn dragonscale x2 quite frequently. I don't know if having 300 skinning had anything to do with that or not. I didn't manage to get enough worn scales for the quest, but Gut Ripper dropped... so I wasn't at all disappointed.

I got 13 worn and 13 green in 2.5 hours farming around Pool of Tears in Swamp of Sorrows at level 51 by myself. 3 of the drops even had 2 scales. Additionally, I got 50 thick leather, 30 heavy leather, 3 auctionable green items, 3 gold in cash, and 5 gold in vendor trash.

not too bad... obviously I was the only one around so i wasn't competing with other farmers for the kills. Just watch out for Somnus!
