I finally got one after farming for about half an hour on the Naga cave south of Feathermoon, Feralas.

I was kinda annoyed at the beginning because every time I opened a Big-Mouth Clam I was hoping that was the one which would drop it. After a few minutes I decided to wait until I had a few clams and clicking them all very fast and what do you know, it dropped and the wait seemed shorted, hehe

Anyway, I killed the following number of mobs before seeing it drop:
24 x Hatecrest Serpent Guard
25 x Hatecrest Sorcerest
2 x Lord Shalzaru

Basically I cleaned the cave 2 times before it dropped and meanwhile I got the following:
36 x Fish Oil
05 x Moonberry Juice
12 x Raw Spotted Yellowtail
32 x Zesty Clam Meat
01 x Small Lustrous Pearl
01 x Iridescent Pearl
01 x Black Pearl

I liked this cave because it has decent respawn time, by the time I got to the top, the lower portion and the entrance already have some new mobs. The entrance to the cave is around 26,66.

The Snapjaws at the sea level area of east Hinterlands is also a great place to farm these. Respawn is very fast, nobody is ever there and Gammarita is the only mob that will agro.

Was farming Mithril on my DK and dropped down here to check for deposits before hearthing. Ended up farming the turtles for about 20 min and got 3 black pearls. Also a great place for skinning.

I, second the suggestion, that the coast line of (Eastern) Hinterlands, is by far the best place to get this item Black Pearl .

After arriving at the LOA, my in-game stopwatch read 00:04:54 (four minutes, fifty-four seconds) before I got the drop, from the drop. (The clam from the turtle that dropped the aforementioned Item.

So if your server economy is outrageous (present price for the four available: cheapest being 199 gold), this is the best place to go.

I will continue farming to supply additional data for the Wowhead Client.

I recommend using this client to assist in the proliferation of the drop data in this site.

Big-Mouth Clam is the drop you are searching for, for the Black Pearl - So keep that in mind when you're spazzing out because it hasn't dropped - I did at first. I've got three more now, timer reads 10 minutes.

If you go to the Hinterlands to farm this (which I HIGHLY recommend, btw), there are a lot of turtles in the water. So if you are a class (like a DK with Path of Frost, a priest with Levitate, etc) just go out to the water and farm if you have someone kill stealing all your mobs (like I did). There are quite a few out there, and it is much more quiet.

lvling up enchanting on my warrior atm, and well the black pearl is 90g each on AH on my server... so i went to wowhead looked it up and saw there was a chance for it to drop from the turtles south in tanaris on the beach. and well there are many turtles.
it took me maybe 15mins and i had 5 pearls.

As a lvl 44 Warrior (Tank) I farmed the area north of Revantusk village, spending about 1.5 hours...
That effort yielded 1 golden pearl, 1 small irredescent pearl and 1 black pearl along with two lockboxes (have a guild rogue opening them - surprise?) and one troll hide bag. Still need another black pearl, and it is taking a while. Other buddies have spoken of farming for a couple of hours before hitting a black pearl.

If you consider the standard shell drops (for cash) and the happy surprises (troll hide bag) then it is well worth farming the area.

If you are going to do this, pick up the quests held by the fishing trainer on the dock.

On Fizzcrank server there is a guy who has 59 black pearls in stacks of 4-5 for sale for 25g in AH.I want to ask him so badly where he gets all his pearls from but he likely won't tell. It just seems outrageous that one person have that many.

I'm going to try my luck farming it before I spend at the AH.

While leveling enchanting on my 70 DK, i needed a black pearl to make my truesilver rod. There were none on the AH, so I came here to wowhead. After reading the comments, I went and farmed the turtles in the Hinterlands. I don't know how many turtles I killed, but I ended up with 156 Sparkled Shell Fragments. Over 2 hours later, I had 4 golden pearls, and I finally got not one, but two black pearls in a row. Figures.

In short, if you decide to farm the turtles for a black pearl, be aware that you may not get one in the first 5 kills. If you do, more power to you, and FML.

Coastline, Tanaris , i done one run and from 18 clams i got 6 Black pearls.
So that's my suggestion where to farm em.

Defiantly Tanaris, 1st kill golden pearl, 2nd kill black pearl. It couldn't have been easier. Not to mention taking a portal to the Caverns of Time basicaly puts you on top of the Steeljaw Snappers

Basically impossible to get on AH on my realm (AggamagganEU), but quite easy to farm.

I went to The Hinterlands and killed the Saltwater Snapjaw there, looted 22 Big-mouth Clams before I got my Black Pearl and it took me around 20 minutes.

Found within 5 minutes of pearl farming north of Revantusk Village on the eastern beaches of the Hinterlands. There are plenty of turtles there and they drop iridescent, black and sometimes golden pearls.

I have found an interesting issue related with clams. and it seems to happen rather for a lot of stuff.
for example if you are wanting a rare item, you mostly never get it if you have one clam and opens it, even if you take 100 of them but open it each time you have 1.
but if you have 20 or 30 and you open them all at the same time..it seams to give more rare item than normally does.
as if the random of if depends on how much you have at the moment of opening them.
even more i think that if you do "nothing else" but to open them (not even open a new bag) works even better specially at last.

and its due to empirical data so may be was just luck but...as i was looking for iridiscent pearl. i grab about 50 shells and nothing, but opening them asap.
then tired of it gater about 20, and when i returned because just passed a level, so was only opening for the food. found it. (almost in the end).
it happened quite a few times (not with the same character) so after readthing this, all takes some new meaning.

the nagas in Aszhara at the shore drop bigmouth mussles in these i had 3 black pearls, 1 small glimmering pearl and 1 rainbow coloured pearl in 2 hours farming

I was farming for these on the aszhara coast earlier today having moderate luck. then I went to Dustwallow Marsh to turn in a quest. I was attacked by a Muckshell Something and It dropped a black pearl. I farmed for a short while didnt get a repeat but they obviously drop them too and they are 10 lvls below the Naga in aszhara.

The lvl 41-43 turtles in the Steamwheedle Port area of Tanaris drop black pearls also. I would say the black pearl drop rate there (which of course requires you loot a bigmouth clam) is about 1 pearl per 15 clams and the clam drop rate is about 1 clam per 2 turtle kills. So, overall, the black pearl drop rate here would be about 1 per 30 turtles. Farming is easy since the turtles are non-aggressive. A side benefit from farming these turtles, if you have the Undermine Clam Chowder recipe which is available from a vendor in Steamwheedle Port, is the great hp restoration food make from the zesty clam meat looted from the bigmouth clams.

I got 2 black pearls out of the clams that the murlocs n the cave near Stonard dropped (Swamp of Sorrows) -- since there were none in the AH, I sold them for about 5g each! Easy Money!

There was one in the Gadge AH for 60 silver so I snapped that up. Then went to Steamwheedle Port and killed turtles for around an hour. Last one before I gave up for the day dropped an iridescent pearl. Nice but no cigar! Just need 1 more for my chestpiece... =/

As stated they drop from the clams that certain mobs drop.

Found all mine doing the quest to kill the murlocs on the coast of swamp of sorrows,and in the cave thats full of them.

And off the turtles on the coast of Tanaris,while grinding them for the cooking quest.

Just doing them i got 9 pearls now.So i would guess i got about 5 an hour.

The naga are the best place for all pearls. In two 30 minute trips I got 2 gold pearls, 2 black pearls, and one white one. Hope this helps!

I killed young murk threshers for pearls, becaise they are listed here as having the second highest drop rates of the big-mouth clams. I ended up with over 60 clams in one hour, but only one black pearl. According to this site the clams should have a 4.5% drop rate of the pearls, which means 1 in 22 clams should contain a black pearl. So I must have had very bad luck.

Well i was just looking in the ah for a black pearl for my enchanting rod.. the cheapest i saw was 35 g for 1 and the prices went all the way up to 60g for 1.. best thing to do.. is like the previous posts said.. fly to tanaris.. head east to steamwheedle port.. kill the turtles out there.. i actually worked my way around the first mountain killing in water.. got the pearl in about 15 mins from a giant clam.. dont know about yall, but 15 mins worth of work was well worth saving 35 + gold. good luck!

The 44lvl Naga in Stranglethorn Vale drop these Black Pearls also. 4 of them in about 50 kills. Probably just luck on the drop rate.

I have been questing in STV for awhile and when I go to turn in quests in Booty Bay, I check the AH there. There is never very much there but I have gotten stack of medium and thick leather for very low costs as well as stacks of silk and mageweave cloth. Last night I saw that someone had put up 3 black pearls as a single auction with a starting bid of 70 silver and a Buyout of 3 gold 99 silver. Technically, it was a decent deal at the Buyout price but I had just purchased my new level skills/spells and was a little low on coin so I just put in the minimum bid, figuring my chances were slim to win. Amazingly, I was the only bidder! I effectively got each black pearl for about 23 silver. Amazing! I doubt I'll be that lucky again!

You can get a decent number of these from Big-mouther clams, dropped by upper 30's and 49's coastal creeps. If you can survive all the Zesty Clam Meat, you'll get one now and then.

If you are considering farming these in Azshara, like I have been for the last few hours, good luck.
I have received 50 meat and ONE black pearl, and ONE small lustrous pearl only, bearing in mind that the clams have been dropping about one in three kills, I am by now, about ready to uninstall the game (again) it is, at best, mind blowingly tedious for little reward, so be prepared for a potential loooong haul, unless you are one of those lucky bstds that reckon they get (insert item here) on the first kill....
