Like mentioned above, seems like the best place to farm these is off the Elementals in the North Western corner in Silithus (where you summon the boss for Thunderfury Quest) - if your high enough level of course.

I spent one hour up there and got:

Elemental Earth x4
Essence of Earth x 12 (I swear they upped the drop rate on this stuff since TBC)
Core of Elements x17
Core of Earth x4
Deeprock Salt x10
and
Tons of stones

All in all, low drop rate. Thankfully I'm on a PVP server so after clearing the mobs i had horde to harass until they respawned. Gonna try Desert Ragers now.

Unless im extremely lucky, i picked up 2 of these for my elemental leatherworking quest in about 5 minutes, so maybe the drop rate is better?? O yea, i farmed em from the desert ragers in Silithus

Forget farming these in Silithid if you don't want to be killing dozens the elementals and not earning XP. Fastest way as stated above is to use your Septer of Celebras inside Maraudon and farm them from Theradrim shardling.
Easily solo'able at lvl 50+

For what its worth, the level 56 Rumblers are dropping them at a much higher rate (15%) than the 57s (5%) or the 58s (1%!)

I been trying to farm Avalanchion and his Thundering Invaders, but to my dismay, every time I visit Azshara to farm, Avalancion's already been slain, and I get to clean up 12-15 Thundering Invaders that were left behind. I've killed 27 in this fashion over several trips and only gotten 1 Core of Earth.

Then, following the advice in the above posts, I tried the Desert Rumblers in the Crystal Vale of Silithus, and found one on my third try, along with a BS plan and an Enchanting formula. I think I'm sticking here for my farming needs...

mara might be good... but think about this, there is a set amount of those rock guys in mara, and they take for ever to respawn. so you go in, spend 5-10 min maybe killing them, get lets say 2, then you have to run all the way out, reset the place, port back in to do it again... so in total your spending 30-45 min each run (depending on how fast you can run, and kill the mobs), getting 0-3 of these things... where as going to silithis, spending 30-45 min you will get 0-4, or more if your lucky... and you can keep farming pretty much non-stop, with out reseting anything, or porting anywhere and waiting for load times, or running out of some place to reset the area to get new targets.

For anyone farming Core of Earth I've figured out a way to get a steady income of them.

The boss in Maraudon called Landslide spawns (lootable) adds periodically during the encounter.

1. Tank Landslide
2. Kill adds
3. Loot adds
4. Profit!

And when on low hp/mana, just reset the encounter!

The Crystal Vale in Silithus is definitely the place to go if you need Core of Earth (Dust Rumblers). Here is what I racked up in 1 hour:

Core of Elements x 100
Deeprock Salt x 29
Essence of Earth x 39
Core of Earth x 10
Solid Stone x 40+ (I say + because I ran out of bag space)
Elemental Air x 6

I also farmed the Stormers waiting on the Rumblers to respawn (which didn't take long):

just keep killing the greater rock elementals in Badlands. They're high armor so it blows to be a rogue and do this, try to get a mage to help you blow through these things. Estimate 400 kills for 4 Cores of Earth. It'll be fun, bring snacks!

I farmed about 1.5 xp bars worth at lvl 43-44. Took me about 6-7 hours to get 4 at about 1 core every 125 kills.
I was farming in badlands off the lvl 42-44 elementals.
I ran into Rumbler a lot. He's a "Rare" lvl 45 Rock elemental in the south western Elemental area. He was popped about 5 times for me. More elementals you kill the faster he pops I think.
Saw him first at 10:30pm. then 11:15, then 11:30, then 12:15, then 12:16 (I kid you not he spawned seconds after I killed him) each time I got about 6s worth of stone. Nothing worthy of a "rare" mob.
Got a handful of green items and made about 20g in rocks for vendors. I also got about 100 Deeprock Salt, and 200 Solid stones.

Definitely worth keeping. You can make the Shatterer (if you choose weaponsmith) for blacksmithing at around level 220. The Shatterer sells for about 15-20g on Laughing Skull.

If you're level 55 or 56, head to Silithus and go to the Crystal Vale. I got my cores of earth in 3 kills. I figured I'd kill some more and here's what I got after 16 kills:
13 Solid Stone
7 Deeprock Salt
4 Cores of Earth
2 Aquamarines
2 Essences of Earth

Not to mention great experience.

I got this in the badlands whilst fighting enraged rock elementals... wasn't even looking for it! Didn't know what it was either, so auctioned it for 10g - went straight away... made me wonder if i had under-priced it and reading the above kinda confirms my suspicions!

Farmed in badlands from 42+ elementals (enraged etc) with 7 green drops, 1 blue drops, Solid Stone and rock chips, not one Core of Earth drop. These sell for about 15g per 2 in Ajol-Nerub AH.

Burning Steppes is a semi-decent area for these too.

On your way to BRD etc its easy to run round one or two circuits here killing the obsidian elementals.

I usually get at least one or two, and on one occassion I got 4.

There's also a few rares that I see quite often and regular chests in among the wyrmkin elites.

Plus if you mine, there's thorium, mith and dark iron.

I can not find the obsidian elementals or the greater obsidian elementals in searing gorge and I have spent a lot of time farming there for heart of fire. I began to look after the latest patch that lowered the requirements for leveling (November 19,2007). Have the obsidian elementals been removed from Searing Gorge? Does WOW intermittently change the drop rate on items and add or delete NPC's to make the game more interesting? What currently is the laest place to farm these?

I went to where Thott said the best drop rate was...Azshara !
Killed Avalanchion and his 3 to 4 co-horts...got 4 cores of earth...4 elemental earths...and a nice lvl 54 ring plus a lot of stones...if your not lvl 65+ take some friends...he's a 58 elite !

The drop rates listed for the elementals at the top seams about right, I only needed one item. My mage destroyed about 100 elementals in the badlands without a drop of all types. I am a bit impatient so I moved her on to Slithis where destroyed about 75-100 again, dropped 12 Essence of Earth and just the one Core.

i'm a lvl 48 boomkin atm, which sucks tryign to farm core of earth for my gadgetzan teleporter , partly due to lvl of the things i would need to kill, and mostly because there immune to roots. If i could root em i could just stand back and kill em off with DOTs. Any sugestions on where to go to get these?

I needed 2 Core of Earth recently for the elemental leatherworking quest and found out how rare this item has become (on Frostmane EU at least). I bought one off the AH for 20 g and farmed the other off the elementals in the NW corner. They have a decent respawn rate and although I had to kill about 50 until a Core of Earth eventually dropped it wasn't as bad, since I got several Essence of Earth and Elemental Earth as well as Deeprock Salt and Solid Stone off them, so they're definitely worth the farming and are easily farmable :)

I've had the most success finding Core of Earth off the rock elementals in Mauradon. In once princess run I got 4, and was able to make The Shatterer. And on Malygos, they sell for a pretty penny.

Went to Searing Gorge to farm the Obsidian Elementals, and got 1 drop out of 2-3 passes through the area where they roam. Headed over to Silithus, and farmed the other 3 I needed in about 15 min in the North-East corner. Lots more earth Elementals there than in Searing Gorge.

As a 52 Hunter I tried the obsidian elementals in Burning Steppes with no luck. 35 kills and nothing. If they truly are at a 5% drop rate I should have gotten at least 1.

I decided to go to the Badlands and hunt the Greater Rock Elementals in the south west corner. They are listed here as a 1% drop rate, but I got 3 drops out of roughly 100-110 kills. Not a great rate to be sure, but I could clear the entire canyon in 6 minutes with no health loss. And the re-spawn rate is roughly 6 minutes, so I just kept on going in a loop for about 45 min.
