The coloration of this item implies that it is BtA (Bind to Account). Currently, the only BtA items in existence are "Heirloom" items, but a few of the special non-combat pets might be changed to BtA if everything pans out during the beta.

BtA items scale with your level, and as the name suggests, can be traded freely between characters on the same account.

Copied this from a blue post on the wow forums. So yes they will be useful beyond 60, greens from outland wont replace them.

1) Heirloom items Bind to Account. This means you can mail them between other characters on your account of the same faction.

2) Heirloom items' stats scale to the level of the person wearing them.

3) Heirlooms' power is equivalent to a blue item of the characters level.

4) Heirloom armor pieces will transform based on the type of the gear the character is capable of wearing. That is to say Heirlooms that are Plate on a level 80 character will be mail when equipped by a level 1-39 character who can wear plate. Items that are Mail on a level 80 character, such as Herod's Shoulders, will be equippable by people who can wear Mail armor at level 40.

We wanted to add something to the game for people interested in trying new classes or who just generally love playing alts, and what's more fun than using an Arcanite Reaper on your level 1 Warrior ;)

We are intending to expand where we use the "Account Bound" flag over time but for now Heirlooms are the only items that work this way. We also intend to expand the types of ways that Heirlooms can be attained but for now they are only purchasable via Emblems of Heroism (the new BoJ) and Stone Keeper's Shards, which are attained by killing any dungeon boss in Northrend while your faction controls Wintergrasp.

As for enchanting these items, they can only be the recipient of anything that you could put on a level one item.

I just purchased this for my level 5 warrior and it cost the sum of 65 emblems of heroism.

This weapon is incredible at level 5 as it affords well over 2% extra crit chance and has a dps of 10. With a dps of 10 and weapon speed of 3.80 this means that you will two-shot any mob with white attacks, and one-shot anyone when critting.

In case you haven't figured it out, you currently can't add forged runes to this, as a Death Knight - the weapon is apparently too low, despite runeforging not saying it requires a minimum level for weapons.

As many have noted you cannot Runeforge nor apply any enchant that has a level requirement (ex. Mongoose) because this (and I assume all heirloom items) have an iLevel of 1. This iLevel does not scale up as you level sadly.

My suggestion would be to go with Crusader which still gives 200 AP (and a heal, but as a DK it's not that noticeable). Yes, there are diminishing returns past 70 but given that this is the only decent enchant applicable I say go for it either way :>.

Besides, it's the only enchant worthy of a DK that you can slap on this. It's also funny to see your DK get a buff of Holy Strength.

After obtaining this weapon two days ago, i've noticed that the stamina on this and other heirlooms will not get restored when you level up. When i was level 19, this had 10 stamina on it, and my heirloom shoulders had 7. So that gave me 170 health points. Normally when you level, you regain all your health, but now it gave me everything, except for the 170 i got from the heirlooms.

So apparently as the situation is now, health points gained from stats on heirloom items won't get restored upon leveling up.

when i level'd my shaman back in the days i used The Pacifier (link below) and i had some crazy crits on it. i wanted to see what the stats are on the bloodied arcanite reaper on 32 compared to the pacifier.

Rend and Deep Wounds are currently BUGGED with this axe. And so will any other power that runs on the "average damage of weapon" mechanic most likely be as well.

Imagine. Level One haste Twink. 10+ Haste on gloves + +20 haste counterweight gives it... 78% haste, meaning its... a .95~ attack speed weapon. Every 10 haste at levels 1-10 is 26% haste increase. This will dominate for anyone doing level 1 twink xD But for level 19s, still great. With 24-36 damage at level one, and .95 attack speed, you'll hit 28~ DPS!

Dual wielding these is like a dream.

If you're an orc, you should definately make use of the +5 expertise which is not only fantastic end game, its great for levelling as well. It's clearly a weapon that has been geared for pvp, so if you're levelling or don't pvp alot, don't bother with the sword.

I to love the fact that they are bringing back our old favorites. however in responds to people saying that this is not a good weapon from lvl to lvl. True this is usually not the best weapon available at all lvls. But for people leveling quickly and dont want to bother with instances and just want a weapon to fly through levels with this would be perfect. You would never have to bother with grinding to get weapons and slow down your leveling process. Until you hit 80 of course when all you have time to do is grind for weapons

Also, if you have a loot mod, such as Atlasloot, browsing heirlooms in it will always show you the effective stats for your current level. You can be certain by looking at where it says the level requirement. It will have your level in parentheses. For example, when views on my 72 DK:

"Requires level 1 to 80 (72)"

So if you come across the link in-game and it has your level in parentheses, then you're looking at the stats it would have if you were equipping it right then.

Best Weapon to be Duel Wielding As Leveling Fury Warrior i got Two of them both with Crusader ( They should be allowed to level with you not just be able to use low level enchants) and i basically heal myself while questing and then when the strength buff comes on these are two unstoppable weapons in the hands of an unstoppable warrior so basically a one man army

In my opinion, a Arcanite Reaper should be one of the best weapons in game, and as at 80, this matchs a blue, I think it should go something like this: https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=12784#created-by was one of the best level 60 crafted Weapons to get you started raiding,, there was also https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=17104#. that dropped from Rag, well this isn't bad to get you started raiding, so how about in Ulduar or in The Frozen Throne (I am guessing thats what the name of The Lich King's Raid will be called as it is his dwelling place) there is dropped the Arcanite Reaver or Titansteel Reaper or well you get the picture, and it's one of the best weapons in the game untill next expac.

I just noticed some crazy thing! Currently I am leveling my DK and when i were at lvl 67 that axe had 84 DPS and now i just hit lvl 68 it gives 119.0 DPS O_O

I levelled up my paladin with the Arcanite Ripper and now I can level my warrior with this. Lovely!

On a side note, this is great for arms warriors who use axe spec because the best weapons at various levels aren't always axes. Though that is of dubious value levelling from 70 to 80 because the two good and easily attainable weapons - Axe of Frozen Death and De-Raged Waraxe - also happen to be axes.

My main is a mage, but can't seem to be able to buy these for a new plate wearer that I want to roll. Is that a bug or it's just unfair that plate wearers can buy heirloom cloth pieces but clothies can't buy heirlom plate pieces? I guess the same goes for the armor as well.

I really h8 doing all the low level quest again and again, but with this Axe my level 6 paladin was able to 2-shot the mobs i was fighting. If you're gonna level a pallly or warrior (or maby ench shammy) BUY IT! It is really worth the cost of emblems.

i would also like the recommend putting crusader on it. It is a monstor in low levels.
I would also recommend gettin a pair of the shoulders u can get from stone keeper shards.

Going from 67 to 68 is an insane level for this item, you gain about 40 DPS and a lot of stats! (From 84dps to 119DPS!)

Doing very solid dmg in battlegrounds at 68 w/ my Death Knight. Love this damn axe.

Only complaint being the lack of runeforge/tbc-enchants made available for it(which has already been pointed out many times), but hopefully Blizzard will change the requirements for weapon enchants, like they did with the shoulder one(Make the enchant require a player level, instead of item level)

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but this and its ilk (ie the other BtA items) are only usable up to level 80. Which means that heirloom items from the current expansion will no longer be valid once Cataclysm hits and any toon hits level 81. So consider very carefully this late in the piece whether it is worth saving up for this or any other such item.

As epic as this weapon looks there are a few "Pros & Cons".
Pros
1) It looks bad ass at any level.
2) The power of this weapon is unmatched even at level 1

Cons
1) It looks bad ass at any level... ( You will have noobs whispering you all the time... " OMG WHERE DID YOU GET THAT WEAPON" trust me it gets old)
2) It is very very slow... I am using this one my paladin and in BGs it is extremely powerful when i actually swing it... before level 50 when you get " Crusaders Strike" you get the full effect of the 3.80 speed of this weapon.

So in conclusion... I am very happy to be wielding this weapon along with the BoA shoulders and chest piece. Be ready to 1 hit mobs in the starting area... really makes you feel "OP"

I have 2 of these on my 63 Warrior and they are very nice indeed. However, I decided to make x2 Fel Iron Greatsword with Massacre.
That's 220 AP. And must say my dps at that level has increased compared to the Reavers.

Note: I have Crusader on the Reavers

Just curious why Blizzard will not allow high level enchants on this item AFTER a player reaches level 60. I understand they do not want you enchant this with Beserker and then send it to your level 1 warrior. Why can't they just make it to where it loses its enchant when you give it to another character.

just a quick, interesting note: this weapon has a speed of 3.80, making it the SLOWEST weapon in the game, other than the temporary axe in the fight with Kael'Thas. some items may have more dps, but this is great for classes with things like Crusader's Strike on paladins etc.
