NoSmoking is pretty right the raptors are good source of heavy leather and thick leather but in my opinion the dragonkin in the cave just near them is better as u get stack of x2 each heavy leather and thick leather altho u may want heavy leather itll also give u thick leather which u will need after heavy leather so u will b prepared wen ur leatherworking goes up

the BEST spot for Heavy leather is by far the jungle stalkers around the Gurubashi Arena , alot of mobs to kill fast spawn time, even as me killing em whit 1 shot as a lvl 80 hunter

The best thing is to skin everything skinnable once killed.
STV has the mastery q's, and they need you to kill loads of mobs,
something that gives you a good supplie of Heavy leather.
Most mobs in STV are skinnable, and has good spots with packs.
It's a gankers paradice, but if you go as high lvl, you should be good.
else it's some nice exp.
Also, don't take medium leather for granted,
it can be made into heavy leather of you are LW!

I'd say that desolace was great for farming this. There are 21 different mobs that drop this at ~40% - 80% drop rates. the kodo graveyard is a good place to start but almost everything you can skin here has a good chance of giving heavy leather. just ignore the birds if you can since you can't skin them...waste of time to kill them(unless you are low enough level that you have to, I was 60 wheni went thru with my druid).

I usually farm heavy leather in STV off of Elder Mistvale Gorillas. Most of the time there are several people already there killing them and not skinning so I get several stacks within a half hour or so.

Another good place is the Hinterlands off of the wolves just outside of the Alliance fp area.

Shadowmaw Panthers are great. You can get Heavy Leather, Large Fangs and Shadowcat Hides off them, all of which are worth good money.

i find it easiest to farm near the yeti's uner the alterac vally entrance in hillsbrad.

for a lvl 60 like me its better to farm heavy leather then rugged as you can get more in less time and on my srever the price is the same (prob. because you use it for thorium brotherhood)

I am getting a very good drop rate off the raptors up in the north west corner of Dustwallow Marsh, it is most likely that all of that zone would drop well, I don't know, I just started on the raptors and was getting an excellent drop rate so stuck to them.

Heavy Leather is massively overpriced because of Thorium Brotherhood rep, grind this to get cash for your mount.

Jungle Thunderers near 42,27 in STV nearly always drop this when skinned. Got 43 heavy leather 3 thick leather and a few hides out of 50 skins

Hinterlands are great. The place is crawling with wolves and you can skin Heavy leather and Thick leather off them (even Wolfhide i think, and various other rare kinds of hide). In about 3 hours I'd made about 13 golds worth of leather or more. Of course it did help, there was a rogue grinding the wolves as well, leaving all the lovely wolfie corpses for me to skin, god bless her.

Check your AH, and compete. Every sever is different. Mine (MugThol) goes about 3g/stack, as little as 1g on the low end, or 8g on holidays. Just watch the market, like everyone else with a money-minded brain. =)

I strongly sugest STV, i went to Hinterlands first and found that i got more thick leather then heavy leather. In STV i got heavy leather pretty much EVERY kill :) Happy farming!

Crystalvein Mine in STV is the best place to get heavy and thick leather! Power level here for sure. Slow basilisks (crocodiles). Trust me.

The easiest place is spirit den in STV 34.64 for those 39+ & also the silverbacks behind the den (there 42+). Hinterlands is good for 42+ & down the coast where turtles are 49+ they don't attack exept 1, just watch out for horde.

I've found that MPC's around 61,52 in desolace, which are lvl 36-38, have a very good farming rate for heavy leather. I got 1 and a half stacks in around five minutes with a lvl 57 feral druid.

I found that the best place to farm this is the basilisks right near the ramp to go to Gagdetzan. Lots of heavy leathers drop. Hope this helps

I've found the best place to get Heavy Leather is in Tanaris - Just southeast of Gadgetzan (52,34) area.. Both the Starving Blisterpaw's and the Blisterpaw Hyena's have a great skinning rate of getting Heavy Leather.. I've skinned 16 and got 14 Heavy Leather.. Hope this helps!

I'm farming a couple stacks an hour off the Raptors in the north western corner of Dustwallow marsh Cords (49,17) Get mostly heavy leather, occasionally medium, and thick leather and all kinds of hides. Also get a few Large Fangs which sell for a couple gold a piece on Andorhal atleast. Good luck farming

For farming I (Alliance Hunter) prefer the jungle stalker raptors (lvl 40-41) in the area north of Gurubashi Arena.
They are close enough so you dont have to run too far between each kill, some have even young jungle stalkers next to them (lvl 36-37) and you can run around in a circle to get the respawns soon enough.
It is possible to get a stack within 10 minutes.
I take into account also, that raptors drop more white/usable (raptor flesh, raptor hide, raptor egg) items then most other skinable beasts in this area. Basiliks for example drop grey items mostly and gorillas drop fangs and hair which are of no greater use. And I think crocs, tigers and panthers (except shadowmaws occasionaly) are no different.

The raptors in Stv are indeed nice. I'm a 70 rogue and plowed trough the area vest of the gurubashi arena in no time. Even tho I oneshot the mobs, they respawn faster then I can kill em.

I got 114 heavy leather and 34 thick leather in a short time, so the rate is brilliant aswell.

Also got over 50 raptor flesh which is nice for leveling cooking.

Most of the drops stack in 10's. Raptor hides and raptor flesh.

Smooth raptor skin stacks in 5's. But is a grey drop so I just tossed it away.

I find, as a 53 hunter, that if you go to the Kodo Graveyard south of Nigel's Point, they drop heavy leather about 85% of the time with a few medium leathers thrown in there. They also rez really quick, and I even got 3 green items. They also drop a ton of Kodo meat for my pet, but I had so much after an hour I sold it. I'd say you can get 60-80 leathers in an hour...I'm thinking about a little over 1 Kodo a minute.

O.K., I did it again (lvl 53 hunter w/pet) & here's what I got from the Kodo Graveyard in an hour & 10 min....

89 heavy leather...(stacks of 20 are goin at auction for 3g 50s)

26 medium leather...stacks of this (20) are goin for 10g right now and Im not sure why...I'm underselling for 5 since the market's weird.

41 heavy Kodo Meat... (45s, 92c)

50 thick Kodo Hair... (28s, 70c each stack of 10)so...that would be 1G and 50 Silver? I can't add here. It's a nice chunk of change tho.

13 dirty Kodo scales... (21s 6c)

1 medium hide 1s, 25c
1 heavy hide 2S

Stonecutter Claymore of the Whale (green lvl 30 +9 spirit +8 stamina) gonna auction for 2G

Plans for Golden Scale Leggings (green lvl 29) gonna auction for 50S

I found a great place for farming heavy and thick leather. Crystalvein mine in STV from the Basilisks. They drop heavy leather a little more often, but if you're leveling leatherworking like me, you need both of them anyway. The respawn rate isn't bad either. It's just north of Gurubashi Arena.

after 10 min farm around gurubashi arena in stv killling raptors and such i got:
28 heavy leather
1 heavy hide
1 lockbox
1 green

good place for farming, sure it goes faster if you are higher lvl, i did it as a lvl 50 druid:)

ok i had a real easy time in shimmering flats in about 15 minutes i had 2 stacks of heavy leather and 1 stack of thick leather the turtles and scorpids there drop it fairly often however do not go near the border because the turtles there on ly drop medium leather but go there

Best place that I have found as of now is:

The "Jungle Thunderer's in STV"

Drop rate is around: 90% Heavy Leather, 5% Heavy Hide, 5% Thick.

Hope this helps everyone. It took me awhile before I found a sweet spot for heavy.

I've found that it's very farmable off the Mountain Yetis and Giant Yetis in the Alterac Mountains. Bonuses:

1. They drop money instead of trash items that you have to constantly chuck away.
2. Heavy Leather drop rate is high.
3. Thick concentration.
4. Drops medium leather if it does drop high (about 25% or 33% of the time), so you can combine it up.
5. Lower level mobs than the Badlands mobs to farm the same from.

Places of note for farming:

Bloodfen raptors, especially their little cave in Dustwallow: thick as can be, and if you're remotely slow about killing them you'll never run out as they respawn so nicely.

Badlands cats/dogs, although you have to actually walk from one to the next and they have a nasty habit of hitting you with a minor disease.

The yeti mentioned by Syrae are probably your best bet.

I found an awesome spot for farming heavy leather in Stranglethorn. Just midway between Grom'gol base camp and the Mosh'Ogg ogre mound, between the river and the road there are a ton of gorillas with a very decent respawn rate. They're all 37 or above so you won't get anything less than heavy leather. I spent a couple of hours there and came away with 6 stacks of heavy and 1 stack of thick, plus a few hides and a few gold's worth of greys. There's also a few lower level snapjaws around too if you run out of things to kill - they tend to drop medium more often, but you'll get a nice amount of tender crocolisk meat for cooking or selling.

Enjoy, assuming you can get me to give up my spot. Heavy leather is doing great on the auction house at the moment. ;)
